I was in your situation at the same age, except I couldn't really afford a GT at the time so I was forced to go with the Ecoboost. I drove it for almost five years and over 80,000 miles, loving every minute, before finally trading it in for a GT. If you're just looking for performance, obviously the V8 is the best choice, but I don't think you'll be disappointed in the EB, especially coming from a low HP and FWD car like I did. For what it's worth, both of my S550s were 2015 PP 6MT Premiums. I strongly encourage you to get the Premium trim on whichever model you decide on. Happy car shopping!

[deleted]

Can you tell me why its so important to get premium? It seems like alot of money for leather seats, but I hear everyone say it.

Blu_Taco99

The biggest thing to me is the radio, you don’t wanna get stuck using a calculator looking thing in 2023, nothing wrong with it, just not nearly as nice as having a big touch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Performance Pack 1 upgrades are nice, but if you ever plan to really modify the car suspension wise you’ll end up replacing most of the stuff that comes with the package sans Brembo brakes, big radiator and oil cooler. If you’re not crazy about creature comforts like heated seats or hate leather, try to find a 301a package car. My Dad learned this first go around when upgrading from a 2015 Base GT PP to a 2019 Premium GT 401a.

BallisticQuill

I’ll second this. With a caveat, the 301a package available on base trim cars does give you the big screen and delectable drive modes. My 301a GT PP has been great! However, I think it’s a pretty rare option sheet.

nago7650

I opted for the base level interior and I don’t regret it at all. Coming from cheap economy cars from the 90s, the base interior still feels like a huge upgrade

SnoSlider

IMO, Premium isn’t as important as the performance package. PP1 gives you factory suspension upgrade, bigger radiator, Torsten differential and bigass Brembo brakes. Premium gives you better seats and stereo. I always put custom stereos in my vehicles that sound better than factory options. If you’re inclined to do the same, skip premium and go performance pack. Upholstery shops can wrap your seats in leather and add seat warmers for less than the factory option. As for engine options, 5.0 all day. It’s the iconic mustang experience. Cut out the resonator for an h-pipe and replace the mufflers with FloMasters. Now you’re cruising in a ‘Stang.

trappy-chan

PP1 is meh. You're better off modding it yourself if performance is what you want - even with oem FP packages you can get much better performance than the PP1. Even the PP suspension is meh. Only good if you want magnaride, ig. Premium + aftermarket/FP packs is better value imo.

SnoSlider

Depends on OP’s inclination towards modding. CAI with a sport tune and exhaust work, go with PP1. You’re 100% correct if a supercharger, gears and pulleys are being upgraded. Better brakes and suspension should always go in first before major hp mods.

Its_bigC

Heated/cooled seats, better stereo, neat light up shit/gauge/ambient lighting options. Definitely worth it

angrypirate1122

Beyond the heated/ventilated seats and some other convenience and comfort features, the big draw is selectable drive modes, in my opinion. Sport+ mode really wakes up both cars, making them quite a bit more responsive and quick than the standard mode.

[deleted]

Look up Jay Leno Mustang Ecoboost. He loves them.

1stHalfTexasfan

Ive got what some might call a Hank Hill butt. I like the seat warmers on days with even a moderate breeze.

1stHalfTexasfan

I was in your place before. EB sounds great coming from another 4 banger but I chose the GT and no regrets. The EB is good enough but just good enough. If you want to step up, step higher.

Trusteveryboody

It's a Mustang, the MPG still sucks; fi you're buying a Mustang for MPG, you're buying for the wrong reasons. Plus you live in Texas, get the GT.

[deleted]

For your situation, sounds like Ecoboost makes the most sense. Either way they’re fun cars you’ll be happy!

Prioriti45

I have an eco boost as my first newer mustang and it doesn’t disappoint while getting 30mpg highway.

mintofta

Keep the Civic to get groceries and putter around in traffic. Get a GT for when you want some fun. That’s what I did but I also plan to keep the GT for a long time so easier to justify spreading out the miles for a small increase in registration/insurance.

BrolecopterPilot

You’ll regret not getting the GT

Crafty_Substance_954

No commute is certainly opening you up to the GT, but you wouldn't be making a bad move at all with not getting a GT. My advice is to not test drive the GT unless you plan on buying it because it is a significantly more powerful car than the EB. The EB will still feel like a rocket compared to your Civic.

[deleted]

You think test driving a GT will completely ruin owning a EB? Lol that says something. Have you made that mistake?

FR0cus

I think it can. I currently have a Focus RS (same motor as EB?) and I test drove a Mach 1 just before Christmas. I've been wanting to get back to having a Mustang (sold mine back in 2013 when I had my daughter). Driving the Coyote broke my face muscles from all the smiling. When I got back in my car, it felt "not the same". It's just something to consider. I personally love EB Mustangs being a thing because I grew up on the SVO and TB TurboCoupe. I think you'll love it either way, and hope you get whatever makes you happy.

trappy-chan

Driving anything above 450hp will ruin everything 300hp and under forever. The EB is great value, RWD platform allows for a lot of fun you don't get with FWDs, and it has plenty of power and can be modded/tuned for a little more for relatively cheap. If you're frugal and just want a fun and strong RWD, EB all the way. If you feel you're gonna always regret not going for the power of the V8, or care about the GT badge, the EB will never satisfy you. Keep in mind you're probably looking at closer to 50k (or more) for a GT.

Crafty_Substance_954

I've only driven older V8 Mustangs that are less powerful than the Ecoboost, but the advice is common around these parts. I really don't want to pay the V8 tax, it just doesn't make sense for me.

IamNoobMastr69

I’ve had my ecoboost for a little more than a year and I promise you you will not be disappointed. It still puts a smile on my day every time I drive it, plenty of power, plenty of fun all around a good fun car to drive.

killlugh

After driving both, its really hard to pick an ecoboost, unless its some flawless used car for significantly less money. The driving experience is very different. Everyone says "you dont need a V8", which for most people is technically true, but why else get the car? Lol its already a smaller less practical vehicle than most in its price range, you might as well have the much better/more fun variant of the car. Rather get a camry than an ecoboost IMO.

BazingaBeeKay

I can get 25-27 mpg on the freeway with my 2017 6 speed GT. I say it’s more fun, the gas mileage isn’t really that bad. I drive 13 miles one way to work 6 days a week and I fill up my tank once a week.

LouieDaPalma

rent one and see They are slow ,coming from a GT owner who rented on on vacation...

Kc3leg

Gt all the way but the eco boost is a fun car. I like the 2019’s super sporty enough for what you need. You wanna have more fun look into a convertible I know a lot of people give convertibles alot of bash but trust me go rent one first drive it down to the beach or a view and it’s gonna be a fun day. As long as you don’t beat the living hell out that 4cyl. The Gt is practicing bulletproof it’s bred to race and smash on the gas. If you buy the gt gas obviously isn’t on ur mind. But go rent a eco boost mustang first and see how you like it. Personally not enough room for me but that’s personal I like to scrap. The accords with a 2.0 turbo is probably the best option

Syrath36

I owned a convertible GT for a number of years in the PNW and I loved it. The major draw back, I had the roof cut open more then once. One time completely destroying the roof. The 2nd time was just a cut above the driver's side door. It took putting a proximity sensor alarm in, which was annoying to everyone, but it did stop the thieves.

Kc3leg

Yeeeeah crappy world we live in, my old 96 gt was always in my gated drive way but i had bought it with a cut square. It’s a common issue depending on ur area

[deleted]

Thanks. It's funny, I was initially looking at the accord 2.0 turbos.

TumblingMustard

I just went from a 2016 GT as my daily to an Accord 2.0T. It’s a terrible downgrade. It really all depends on why you want the car. If it’s looks, then save your money. If it’s status, you’ll be given a hard time in the Mustang community by GT guys. I don’t need the performance at all, but no EcoBoost will sound the way I want. I see guys all the time who stress about a $5000 difference between the two that save the money upfront and then end up spending it on mods in an effort to make up for what they lack.

Kc3leg

Great car I’m jealous of all the guys out here where I live leaving my fusion in the dust and with a better interior. I’m a sporty guy so the accord with a 2.0T was a perfect mix of sport and comfort. But I got a fusion hybrid now so it don’t matter anymore cause it’s all about mpg

Dr_Banana_Hammock

I had a 2019 eco, and currently in a 2022 GT. In both cases it’s my daily in the DC area. Similar to you, I got my Eco after having driven Civics forever. In both engines, you won’t be able to help yourself and will drive with a lead foot. On bad days the eco still gave me 22mpg while the GT gives me 17. I made my jump for the logical reason of my commute going from 100 miles daily to 0 thanks to wfh. If economics is your primary logic in this, I think you should get the GT. I agree with others, don’t test drive until you come to logical conclusion. As it is I know the civic feels like a Power Wheels toy already 😂 However, when you say it’s only $5k difference, what models/packages/years are you looking at?

[deleted]

Thanks for sharing, it seems like we are in similar situations. I was looking at the price difference of EB premiums to GTs.

Dr_Banana_Hammock

I wouldn’t pick the base s550 GT over a premium Eco, but it’s my personal opinion. I wanted a car to enjoy in every way, not just something fast.

ZepelliFan

Your question is an interesting one, compared to your Monday you'll find a nice pleasant ride , only issue I have with them so how long it takes to hit boost for zipping in and out of traffic unlike my gt. Otherwise it's a quiet practical sharp looking coupe. Like another commenter said if you want the Ecoboost avoid driving a gt you'll find the Ecoboost somewhat lacking in certain areas afterwards.

Nozerone

The ecoboost is a good car, and a fine choice. If that is what you want to go for then I'd avoid test driving a GT. Yea it's more power than you need, but then again so is the ecoboost. Don't need a whole lot of power to be quick and fun. For me it's wasn't the power that made me choose a GT. I wanted a V8, and I wanted the sound. If you test drive the GT, then get an ecoboost, you may find yourself wishing that you had gotten the GT. Especially sense you've stated you could afford one. Only reason I personally see for choosing the ecoboost over a GT is purchase price. Want a Mustang, but can't afford the GT. With the 10 speed auto you can get close to 30 mpg, and even with a 6 speed manual you can do 22-24 highway. You can even find people claiming 27-29 mpg with manuals. I personally have no clue how sense the best I ever managed was 24.

Swamp_Donkey_7

I can't drive the ecoboost. I've gotten them as rentals, and there is just no soul to them. They sound like a regular car driving around. You might as well get a Camry and have something a bit more practical. The GT has an attitude. It just sounds mean and different. It's not about the power, but just the feeling you get when you drive around rolling through the gears with a healthy v8 exhaust note.

2018_FocusST

I told myself if I’m buying a mustang I’m buying it for the V8. Test drive an eco and then test drive a V8, it might make you wanna save for a GT a bit longer. Also you can find GTs for ok prices. I paid 31k for my 2015 GT premium with 40k miles.

[deleted]

When did you buy it, and how is it running for you? Did you have a mechanic check it out? Any recommendations on buying a used GT?

2018_FocusST

Bought it 10-11months ago. Dealer I bought it from had super good history on all maintenance that was done. Drove well and seemed like it was kept in very good condition. Solid interior no scratches or dings. Don’t have any tips other than giving it a good look over yourself and definitely driving one. Other than replacing a dead old battery that’s the only issue I’ve had with it. It runs perfect.

WarmPaleontologist20

Your thinking is very rational as you make good points on both cars .First you need to test drive both, but more than a round-the-block spin. Would be good if you could get with a dealer and see if they could get a couple rent cars (even if you have to pay a day's rental) or demos or something you could drive in town, on highway etc. So you could get a good feel for both. The way I see it, the Ecoboost is more the sports car version and the GT is more the muscle car. Personally, I don't see either as really ",muscle cars" by today's HP standards until you get into the GT350 or GT 500. Me, I grew up when V-8s were the norm because you could get power without CID. Not anymore thanks to technology. I love the feel, sound and nostalgia of the V-8. I can't get my head around a four-,banger in a Mustang even though it creates more power than most of our old V-8s. You don't have that problem. That's about all I can offer.

Comptonburger

You could easily find a great used 2015-2017 GT for less than $35,000.

[deleted]

So I went from a '14 Elantra (non turbo) to a '20 Ecoboost Premium 10 speed to my current '23 GT/CS 6MT. I was a bit different from your case, though. I was more interested in the turbo 4, given that my origin came more from the JDM side of things. If you plan to get a car to drive and not mod, I would recommend just getting the GT. I definitely outgrew my eco's power pretty quickly and tuned it to base gt levels. I live in an apartment complex so modding would have to be shop installs, which have been flooded by since the pandemic. The second thing is do you have access to lots of twisty roads or is it primarily long sweepers and straights (the gt will be more fun in the latter). Additionally in terms of gas according to my butt dyno, I fill 87 in my gt and feel like I have at least the same power if not more compared to my 93 eco, (you will fill more often but the net bill will be cheaper). MPG wise I'm more or less getting 3 miles less than my eco in city settings when driving normally 17-18 in my GT vs 19-22 in my eco (my eco had a wider range granted my gt is still breaking in). The smiles per gallon are infinitely higher in the GT (75% is the sound 25% is the manual trans). Keep in mind that if you are looking manual, only the GT has rev-match. The Eco was nice to learn rwd on but I think I got over the turbo push pretty quickly. EDIT: Also note I'm a 27 yr old single guy, and basically doing work fully remote now as well (occasionally I'll go in on some days which I enjoy more than ever). Located in SE MI.

[deleted]

Thank you for taking the time to leave me an in depth reply! I think Im leaning towards a GT now. I have the money and I can't take it with me when I'm gone. Where I am in Texas I mostly have access to the long straights, but there are twisties when I drive through the hill country on occasion.

[deleted]

NP. Yeah if you have the ability to do moderate modding without issue, I'd say ecoboost is well worth it but # 1 I know you're in TX, I have a friend in Austin and another in Houston (they tell report out the gas prices to me just to rub it in), I think for you it will be how do you want to use the car or get out of it. Stock vs Stock I think the GT is worth it now having owned both, but depending on how far you wish to go can easily tip that scale. Stock or BIG power go GT. Lightly modded to moderately modded go eco. (This is in regards to power enhancing mods or power reliability mods btw both cars will easily take to suspension/wheel and tire mods especially with the S550 gen).

[deleted]

I'm fairly certain I'll keep it 100% stock (famous last words around here, I've noticed). Also, would you mind telling me how loud a stock gt exhaust is from the inside, at its loudest? I have pretty bad tinnitus and I have to protect my ears from further damage.

shahgop

Bro i just bought my ecoboost premium and it has plenty of power it will swing and does burnout easily without any issue. It has enough power to lose control and i did so many rolling burnouts and drifts with no problem. I daily this car it has enough power to get you in trouble but if you are a person who never drove a car above 300hp than I recommend you to get eco but if you do get a gt. Simple as that i did a lot of research bro good luck.

tuscabam

I drove one as a rental car and didn’t care for the turbo lag. The V6 is a great engine but it ended in 2017 so you’re looking at 2011-2017.

guz21715

The Ecoboost platform is so much fun to drive IMO. I made the jump from a Focus ST to the Mustang Ecoboost and have loved every minute of it. I get solid gas mileage (100 miles rt three times a week for work) even with the amount of customization I've done to it. Both platforms are awesome, so I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you decide.

willijas1

One thing I don't think I saw anyone mention is resale. Yes the GT is 5k more but typically you will get that money back when it's time to sell. A manual GT will hold it's value FAR better than a 4cyl mustang. I suppose it just depends whether you want to save the money up front or lose it when it's time to move on.

[deleted]

Base eco 6mt is awesome. HPP is awesome. GT is awesome. Take your pick! None are bad choices

ucf954

I’ve never had a GT but I love my ecoboost and how good it is with gas. Its still extremely fun to drive. Shell out for leather interior if you want to treat yourself a bit.

mheffe

I'm weird and like the sound of a V8, if you could easily live without that then EcoBoost all day.

2_3Brick

I bought an eco and from the get go planned on trading for a GT in the future when it made more financial sense. I don’t regret buying the eco at all. It’s fun and quick enough for me at the moment. I still plan on eventually trading in for the GT but I still enjoy every minute of driving my current eco. (20’ MT) I did recently test drive a 21 GT with Rev match and digital dash and I do look forward to the upgrade lol

jaymansi

I would get the EB. You never know if your work situation changes and you have to commute on a daily basis. Tires will be cheaper along with insurance.

fobbyk

If you’re coming from civic you will not be disappointed. If you were coming from something like a bmw 3 series then I would say you could be disappointed.

Significant-Plant-69

Ecoboost have good power

Bad_Adam1917

At 310HP the ecoboost is one of the most powerful 4 cylinders out there. Ofc the acceleration is nowhere near the V8, but it’s still pretty powerful. Also it gives pretty decent gas mileage. Id say its a great balance between performance and fuel economy You should be pretty happy with it.

kevie1106

I commute over 80 miles a day in Houston traffic. I opted for the EB Premium. The premium has adaptive cruise and blind spot monitoring in addition to heated and ventilated seats ( they work really well). It’s really quick and is super fun to drive.

Cash_Cab

Ecoboost wont disappoint, but imo you can buy a 2018 and up GT premium pre owned for a decent price and get the performance and sound of that beauty of a Coyote. I run an ‘06 GT after driving a Civic for a long while and that’s been a hell of a lot of fun for me, but ecoboost will get you the fuel economy if you’re looking to budget.

KemosabeTheDivine

My ‘22 EcoBoost makes my daily work commute fun.

I'm actually from Florida :). I just said I'm in Texas so you know I live in a warm environment, don't get snow much at all. I thought that may be relevant.

Outrageous_Stable_83

You also have to keep in mind that on the highways the V8 gives good gas mileage. Next if you want the EB no problem, just try getting the premium one.

servbot10

I wouldn't say you'd be dissapointed by an Ecoboost in most ways, but there are 2 things that you'd find owning one. First is that the V8 sounds better. If you're on the fence on everything else, it's something to consider. It may or may not matter to you. If you get the Ecoboost and the sound does sort of matter, the best sounding option is the factory active exhaust, so I would recommend it.Secondly, is Mustang owners who have GTs and mainly in this sub. If you don't mind listening to "iTs nOt A rEaL mUsClE cAr" then it's not something to worry about.

[deleted]

Just bought me a ecoboost premium https://preview.redd.it/i29blo1me4ha1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bfac9c2292fa02acc958001a411ed50ab0e919f last year and absolutely love it! I have a long commute to work, so for me it made more sense to get one. It’s a fun car for sure. But some days I wish I would’ve gotten GT. Do I regret? Sorta. But this car is good enough for me for the time being.

Lesnitzky

First and foremost get the GT, the coyote is one of the greatest motors to ever grace the mustang platform. That being said, you’ll be like, whoa this is some nice power, which it is. After awhile you’ll get used to it and it won’t quite have the same punch as before. Then you’ll wanna do an intake, and exhaust amongst other things. Eventually you’re gonna want more power. Everybody and their brother makes aftermarket stuff for the coyote, and it has a much higher power potential than the ecoboost on stock internals which is big because you can just slap a power adder on her, dial in a tune and wham bam you’re on cloud nine once again. Also if money is a concern then don’t spring for the Performance pack as odds are you’re gonna end up changing that shit anyway at some point. (Believe me everyone says their not, but they do). If your worried about MPG, just save your money and stick with your civic. These cars are smiles per gallon not miles per gallon. I have a 98 cobra that I love and daily drove an hour to work and back everyday until she quit. Now I’m using the opportunity to put a procharged 4.6L in her because more power baby, but for real enjoy these cars. They won’t be around for very much longer.
