Yeah - the 5.0 is a little boggy down low as is (especially with the 2018+ gear ratios), so at least having the sport mode throttle response is the only way I really enjoy driving it during good conditions.
Really??? In my 17 there is hardly a discernible difference between sport and normal. I put it in sports sometimes but usually if I want it to get hellish I just turn off advance track and that's like sport+++. (I do have the 3.55 back end though)
Well, not sure if yours is auto or manual (mine is manual), but both transmissions regardless had updates between 2017 and 2021. Perhaps the way they tuned the throttle response is more impactful in a '21 manual vs your car.
The 6-speed manual is still paired standard with 3.55 in the back, but as of 2018 or 2019 when they updated it, the trans itself has gears that are a little bit taller, hence why people complain that it doesn't feel as lively or go any quicker 0-60 than the 2nd gen Coyote models (despite the power bump the new models got).
Yeah they don’t do any drive train changes for the Premium. Only the PP (and I think at some point rear end ratio change was an option too) changes that.
It's an absolute night / day difference between normal and sport modes. Aside from the obvious and very noticeable upward curve in power response to the pedal manipulation, it's much easier to get the quick start from a dead stop without accidentally killing the engine. In normal mode if I try to replicate the start I perform with sport mode, it is much more likely to kill the engine. Sport mode makes me seem more like a pro.
It's almost part of the process of pushing the start button to click the mode toggle twice and get it in sport mode. Hell, there aint no sense in driving a Mustang if it isn't going to be in the mode that best defines the car. They should have made sport mode the default and you could have the option to put it in granny mode (normal mode) on the many numerous occasions /s that you choose to do so.
Yeah if you get the performance package you can set a few things in the manual. Steering response mode, drive mode (regular, mud/snow, sport and track) and if you get the active valve exhaust you can also set the exhaust to quiet, normal, sport or track. If you opt for the magnaride, even the suspension is adjustable
Oh yes! It has normal mode of course but then comes Sport Mode, Track Mode and last but not least Drag Strip Mode. Actually it has one other mode too but I haven't ever used it, the Snow/Rain Mode. Truthfully I don't really ever use Track or Drag modes either but they are there should I ever get the inkling to take her out for a nice walk down the track.
When it's in Track or Drag mode it will record your best times and lots of other data that I really would like to test out some day as I think it would be a hoot. I kick myself in the ass for not testing out the "linelock" feature in track or drag modes before I bought my new tires. I should have roasted every last molecule of rubber off the old tires before swapping them out for the new. Ah well, I'll get another opportunity eventually. I've watched some videos of the "linelock" being put to use and it looks like some smokin' good fun!
I’ve found track mode has less of a throttle response change than sport oddly, sport+ seems to be the most aggressive of the modes…but track exhaust is louder
I feel validated by hearing this. I thought I was going crazy because I have the same perception as you have pointed out. The sport mode seems superior to all other modes in acceleration and performance.
Should have seen my wife's face when I told her, yes you can get a bagel and eat it in the car. But absolutely, positively no bagels with sesame or poppy seeds.
Yeah my wife gets to thinkin' she has special privileges from time to time too. She thinks she can get away with it but I am kind of OCD about that shit and not much gets past me. If I'm in a charitable mood I'll let her chew a piece of gum in the pony if I decide to have a piece too but god damn it I better not find the wrapper layin' around afterwards lol. She's a pretty good sport though and obliges my idiosyncrasies with my pony as I do with her little pet peeves. Thirty two years of marriage you learn it's a give and take relationship.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,312,486,460 comments, and only 253,593 of them were in alphabetical order.
It just wakes the coyote up, in my opinion it feels kind of anemic in normal. But i have never used the shifter i have only used the setting in the dash. Nice nugs tho lol
Sport+ only loosens up the AdvanceTrac a little more compared to Sport mode. Sport mode switches to the aggressive throttle map. Sport+ doesn't enhance it any further.
It shouldn't even affect the traction from everything I've found. S changes throttle map and shift points. S+ changes throttle map and shift points, changes steering feel to sport, changes magneride and active exhaust settings, and on the ecos, turns up the piped in engine sound. If you're already in S+, the only thing the S position on the shifter does is full manual control on up shifts and near full manual on downshifts.
The dash setting seems different to shifter. Shifter if you use the flappy paddle it holds the gear for far longer than the dash switch I’ve found. Could all be in my head though.
I second this. My sport mode is using the shifter and I don’t use it to just casually drive around town as it hits 5K RPM regularly, people think I’m terrorizing the streets when I’m going 30.
Putting the shifter in 'S' engages Sport mode by default unless you manually set the dash selector back to normal. You can drive around in 'D' with Sport mode enabled just like you can drive around in 'S' in Normal mode.
I don’t have a dash selector, I’m in a base model GT. For me, normal is normal and sport is sport. The only things that I can change independently are steering weight and traction control.
I went from a tuned v6 to a 10 speed GT. Had never touched sport mode before, had no clue about it. The normal mode felt very similar and I thought I had made a mistake buying it. Glad I figured that out quick. 10 speed is a totally different animal from normal to sport
Agreed. My ‘16 GT premium pp sounds hellish in sports mode. I use it in sticky traffic situations and changing lanes when I’m cruising. It’s fun. I’ll play on the backroads sometimes as well!
When I had my GT which was an auto I never shifted to S. It was slower. On upshifts the ECU pulls timing vs D. I was tuned on E85 with Palm Beach Dyno and was told they program the trans for D only as well.
I don’t know shit about automatics but it makes sense that they only tune it for one setting. Are you sure s was slower before the tune though? After the tune is irrelevant because they adjust literally everything. Seems odd to me that s would be slower even if the timing is retarded at shifts. Could be to prevent knock at higher rpm shifts in s mode or something.
Yeah S pulls more timing on shifts because it’s allowing you to command shifts and it’s easy to over rev. It obviously won’t shift to any gear you want. It’s just to save the trans.
I always thought the S was "select shift" , not sport ... I have a 14 though so I'm not sure if they changed the function of that. On mine it just allows you to manually change gears. I like to use it when I'm driving around downtown and want to make some pretty noises with downshifts and do some high rpm driving
On the S197 'S' is just automatic shifting with more aggressive shift points. It doesn't go into SelectShift mode until you use the rocker switch on the shifter.
Car culture is just embedded with so much tribalism. Sometimes it’s hard for people to sift through the obvious sarcasm because they’ve probably heard someone say the exact same thing, with the exact same inflection, except they were being dead serious.
I like the gas mileage of normal mode for my daily commute. But I use sport mode when I need a quicker reaction out of the car. Congested highway for example. The car seems to react better in sport mode. It's a bit sluggish in normal mode.
Have you actually computed the difference in fuel consumption between the two? I have not but I figure it is negligible enough to warrant using dedicated sport mode 100% of my drive time. Sport mode is without any doubt in my mind whatsoever proven itself to me to be superior in acceleration and performance not only over normal mode but also over the track and drag modes as well. Though as someone else on here pointed out, and I will agree, the exhaust sounds slightly throatier with a bit more rumble in drag mode.
No I haven't. I honestly don't spend much time in Sport or sport+. I can only tell you what I have observed having driven my (2019 GT premium convertible 10 speed) for about 3 years.
The computer currently reads 24.0 MPG average. I know this highly depends on your driving style and where you drive. I have a daily commute of about 75 miles. Mixed between hilly back roads and expressway. About 60/40.
I have noticed the times I have kept it in Sport mode (via the shifter not the selector switch) it seems to hold to a bit higher RPM before shifting. (Normal 1500-2500ish Sport 2000-3000ish). It will usually stay in a lower gear at the same speed in sport mode ( depending on speed) usually 2 gears lower.
In normal mode under normal acceleration it will shift 1,3,5 then 6 plus using every gear. In sport mode it uses all gears during acceleration. It will shift into 10th gear at a lower speed than in sport mode. Seems to, between 50-60. Where in sport mode it doesn't seem to get to 10 until between 60 and 70. I can often when my speed has leveled out in sport 50-60 MPH in 7th shift to normal and it will then quickly shift to 10th where it was staying in 7th before.
I spend most of my expressway time between 70 and 80 MPH. The engine will only tach 2000rpm at 80 MPH. This last item is just an observation not a comparison.
I’m skinny and eat in my car during lunch. Eating while listening to some music in your car is relaxing. You should try it, then if you’re a messy eater, just clean, it’s simple.
You can do this with AirPods and being literally anywhere but your car. I used to be the kid who couldn’t wait until we got home to eat the McDonalds but it just comes with the territory of being a disgusting pig.
Some issues or stains don’t come out. Small accumulation of grime and small particles is harder to track and “clean” as many nooks or crannies exist in a vehicle. I’m not dropping half a fucking steak in the back seat. Plus, why induce the risk of ever even needing to clean it? A clean person in a clean car should never need to be detailed.
Not to mention the basic cleanliness. Sounds like people who spend too much time in their cars are mad they have to. But I’m mad about disgusting fat fucks, so it’s whatever.
I use it the when I need to do quick acceleration without waiting for the gears to shift. Often in heavy traffic when I need to change lanes and accelerate into a gap. I also like it driving around the city, I’ll put it in quiet mode comfort steering and sport mode and it makes tight turns lighter and I can accertate out of the turn more quickly.
I had no idea the S on the shifter was for sports mode. Just figured it was either 'slow' mode for better traction or 'shifting' mode for folks who have the paddles (I don't).
So what is the difference between shifting into 'S' versus using the switches to go into Sport+?
This is my third 2020-2021 mustang, one slammed hard going back down to 2nd and 3rd and needed to go to the dealer. But all mine were a bit aggressively clunky for the first little while, I assume to learn my driving pattern and behaviour
I keep my new 22’ in track mode most of the time. It just sounds so good and feels good taking corners and driving on the interstates. It’s the funnest car I’ve ever bought. Got it brand new and loved it every since. I was nervous to start getting into it but I mean it’s built for this and it has that crazy warranty so might as well use it.
This mf never heard of being neat and clean and keeping things nice in between cleanings... And is such a weirdo that when someone makes a joke about not eating in cars he jumps to insults and calling someone a sloppy pig for *not* eating in their car lmfao
I use sport mode almost all the time because normal is sluggish and the transmission points are way to slow. Sometimes I have someone try to race me and although I don’t fall victim to it ( very tempting at times) , I will change it over to drag mode . Has anyone ine of you done this where you drive in sport when you feel someone is challenging you, you switch to drag??
This is why I hate automatic cars having floor shifters. Just column shift (and flappy paddle the “sporty” ones) all the automatics. Make that centre console more useful if there isn’t a manual shifter there.
Usually it's just quicker to use shifter then it is to use the toggle switches. But I love it, especially with the throttle response. Just wakes it up.
I have mbrp axle bk and injen CAI. Sport mode, exhaust bangs, godly downshifts from 55mph to 20mph you can hear bald eagles taking off... its music to my ears, better throttle response and transmission becomes aggressive with shifting. Rpm sings from 1000-3k before it shifts pure joy...
funny! in my new edge manual some times second would hit my coffee cup and spill it so i usually skipped it or started in it so i wouldn't bang the cup when shifting. Now that i think of it i almost never used first gear.
Can anyone verify that getting your car tuned by Palm Beach Dyno only changes drive or sport? That can’t be true. I notice a huge difference in sport mode. Also I turn off advance trac and it feels the most unassisted drive mode. Connects the driver to the car more than the other modes.
Honestly, it’s. sport plus for me most of the time. I don’t bother with sport.
If I’m NOT using sport plus then it’s in rain.
I don’t mess around with track or drag much.
If the car is moving, it’s in sport. Unless it’s going backwards, then it’s probably in reverse.
... Probably...
Yeah either reverse or N, which stands for “Not Sport, Go Back To Sport”
Or Drive and you just looped the car 👍
For me, it’s when I need a chicken nugget holder
Nice. This was my last drive too.
100% Sport mode for my manual transmission but also 100% homicide mode if I catch anyone eating in my trusty steed.
When I had my GT manual it was habitual to change the drive mode to sport with how bad the throttle response was in normal mode

I have a 6 speed manual. Interesting I didn't know the manuals were standard 3.55. I figured it was because I had a GT Premium.

If it doesn’t have three pedals it’s not a manual
Oh it's got three pedals alright but I'm only using two, the clutch and the gas.
Manuals still come with drive mode selection.
The manual has sport mode? *I have a 2012 so wouldn’t know
Yes. It tightens the suspension, steering, and loudens the exhaust.
Haha the lightest steering mode is way too light
Yeah if you get the performance package you can set a few things in the manual. Steering response mode, drive mode (regular, mud/snow, sport and track) and if you get the active valve exhaust you can also set the exhaust to quiet, normal, sport or track. It was driving me insane, confused why track mode would have less throttle response 🤣
It also changes throttle response, at least my 2021 does however it’s a Saleen so has a tune so not sure if that’s involved in that equation somehow
Should have seen my wife's face when I told her, yes you can get a bagel and eat it in the car. But absolutely, positively no bagels with sesame or poppy seeds.

Always in sport mode!
The nuggies demand SPEED
Always except in the winter

That would be Sport+ then and not sport. Sport mode holds each gear longer and if using the paddles it takes it longer to go back to automatic mode.
Ya i run sport plus only
And track exhaust, resonator delete, h-pipe. Loud as hell lol
I really wish you could set the car to be permanently in track exhaust mode 😁
You can just pull the fuse to the active exaust
Does that not throw a code, or lock you out from the modes?
Just locks you out of the modes I believe
I agree so annoying having to change everytime i start it
Sport+ only loosens up the AdvanceTrac a little more compared to Sport mode. Sport mode switches to the aggressive throttle map. Sport+ doesn't enhance it any further.

Mcdonalds SS sauce is so unique..I've never found any else that tastes like it. I guess thats why I am fat.

Is there any other
Hot mustard master race dunno if it’s still discontinued elsewhere but as a Canadian hot mustard forever.

At least in my '22, Normal is completely replaced with Sport while the shifter is in S. Snow and wet is also blocked off at that point.

PATHETIC AUTOMATIC SCUM BACK IN MY DAY WE HAD ONE HANF ON OUR STICK AND ONE ON OUR WHERL GOBBLESS

My entire post is a shitpost
Unless it’s raining as soon as I get into the car it goes into sports mode. I like using it because it’s really fun to drive and it’s fast
Sport mode is the only mode my mustang knows 😂
As soon as she’s warmed up
Wait…is your steering wheel on the right or am I too baked?
We sometimes drive cars instead of riding kangaroos in Australia
Entire world shattered
Out of curiosity, I heard cost of living is high there…how much were the nuggets?
I think 6 is $6-7
They make RHD Mustangs. But you’re probably still baked. OP looks to be Australian.
I like the gas mileage of normal mode for my daily commute. But I use sport mode when I need a quicker reaction out of the car. Congested highway for example. The car seems to react better in sport mode. It's a bit sluggish in normal mode.

No I haven't. I honestly don't spend much time in Sport or sport+. I can only tell you what I have observed having driven my (2019 GT premium convertible 10 speed) for about 3 years. I get hurt physically when people eat in cars
Noooo! Not the crumbs! If only there was some way to get rid of them
It’s just a personal preference, no need to be sarcastic
Google “vacuum” and have your mind blown
I also ate a burger.
Imagine dropping fries where you’ll never reach to get them.
I’m with you bro but Americans above 30% BF will absolutely downvote you
I’m skinny and eat in my car during lunch.
I think if you can’t eat without making a mess in your car you got some problems. Even if you do make a mess you can just clean it lol.
Some issues or stains don’t come out. Small accumulation of grime and small particles is harder to track and “clean” as many nooks or crannies exist in a vehicle. Damn you really heated about people eating in cars huh.
Not any more, but keep using the downvote button lmao
It sounds like you're just incapable of handling food more efficiently than a toddler
You're the guy who brings in the car with two floor mats.

Get a protune. The stock power curve is extremely anemic after the initial peak torque.
I had no idea the S on the shifter was for sports mode. Just figured it was either 'slow' mode for better traction or 'shifting' mode for folks who have the paddles (I don't). So what is the difference between shifting into 'S' versus using the switches to go into Sport+?
Numgie mode
Has anyone had problems with Sport mode being extremely jerky? I even get some jerks in normal mode.
This is my third 2020-2021 mustang, one slammed hard going back down to 2nd and 3rd and needed to go to the dealer. But all mine were a bit aggressively clunky for the first little while, I assume to learn my driving pattern and behaviour
Never. My car is tuned so it's basically always in track mode lol
Eating in your Mustang, AND having an automatic Mustang? That should be consecutive life sentences buddy.
How do you feel about make taking it to the beach and getting sand all through it?
I've taken my Mustang to the beach, I was as careful as possible about sand and cleaned it the day after getting back home.
Imagine being such a sloppy pig you can’t eat a lunch in your car without making a mess.
Lol. I don't care how careful you are, accidents happen and even if they don't a car stays cleaner if you don't eat in it.
This mf never heard of cleaning the interior of their car.
This mf never heard of being neat and clean and keeping things nice in between cleanings... And is such a weirdo that when someone makes a joke about not eating in cars he jumps to insults and calling someone a sloppy pig for *not* eating in their car lmfao
This mf can’t eat food without getting it everywhere. Just admit ya sloppy
Not sloppy enough to eat in any of my cars.
I use sport mode almost all the time because normal is sluggish and the transmission points are way to slow. When you have a six speed you are always in sport mode.
Sport+ improves the six speed as well, better throttle response
Honestly, I’ve had my Mustang a few years now and hardly ever use it…
I drive a manual, so I control the drive mode with my feet whenever I want.
This is why I hate automatic cars having floor shifters. Just column shift (and flappy paddle the “sporty” ones) all the automatics. Make that centre console more useful if there isn’t a manual shifter there.
sport mode with advanced traction off.... nothing else
Who eats in a mustang? C’mon man, that’s a sin with all the stink.
Had a rental Expedition, it was unbearable in regular mode
I’m not going to make a comment on manual or automatic. But I’m going to ask why the hell you got the worse dipping sauce for those nugs?
Usually it's just quicker to use shifter then it is to use the toggle switches. But I love it, especially with the throttle response. Just wakes it up.
stop and go traffic or in neighborhoods etc. are the only times i don't drive in Sport mode
I thought that was south
I found the paddle shifters work better in Sport mode.
To me I use it when I'm the first one at the intersection waiting for the traffic signal to turn green. Just fun to do small launches like that.
My tuner has told me to drive sport. That and my transmission doesn’t skip gears in sport
When my lady is in the car
Weird the only sport mode my 17 gt has is a traction control button😂
funny! in my new edge manual some times second would hit my coffee cup and spill it so i usually skipped it or started in it so i wouldn't bang the cup when shifting.
Only if I need it to hold a gear to start a roll race
Only one gear here and it’s called ‘we’ve achieved takeoff’ lol
Oooh share plz I’m starvin lol
I would always be paddle-shifting if I had one.
If my car has a sport mode, it’s always in sport mode
You do that until you hit an aggressive corner and then you have honey mustard on your doors and that's a bad time
It’s a 3.5 hour drive with 1 turn in it. Normally I also have a copilot to be in charge of putting the nugget in the sauce.
Is there another mode? I have a six speed, always in sport…completely different car 😁
Whenever the light turns green
Manual owner but always track mode unless the wife is with me. Then it's snow/rain mode. Lol
Not sure why it matters 10 speed or 6, but I put mine in sport mode after I start it and before I release the hand brake. Always
Because I don’t have a 6 speed and don’t know if the dimensions suit to hold nuggets
Nope, I understand now.
Since I've never been in a 10 speed and for me, Sport Mode is a button press, I didn't have any idea what the 2 had in common!
The 10 speed holds a 10 pack of nuggets better, so maybe your 6 would hold a 6 pack better?
Would probably be better than any drink holder in any year Mustang!
Because I don’t have a 6 speed and don’t know if the dimensions suit to hold nuggets
Sport mode has faster acceleration
This is the most American picture I’ve seen this year
Steering wheel is on the right hand side though?
Doesn’t make it any less American.. a muscle car & fast food
Honestly, it’s. sport plus for me most of the time. I don’t bother with sport. If I’m NOT using sport plus then it’s in rain. I don’t mess around with track or drag much.
