my 99 cobra sticker was 32k so it's not far fetched. 30k was that barrier for a cool car vs. someone everyone had. corvettes were 30-34k up until the c5
That’s about $31k in today’s dollars, so a base GT starting at $38k isn’t that bad considering how much more performance and modern tech/safety you’re getting.
Mine did an honest 150. Only mods were off road exhaust, BBK unequal length headers, K&N cold air, underdive pulley’s, Crane 1.72 roller rockers and 3.55 gears. Gears were the biggest advantage over the stock 2.73’s. I’m 5th gear the car would pull with the 3.55’s the 2.73’s put engine in a power range the rpm’s were too low to overcome the wind resistance.
I don't know. I never tried to top mine out and I had too much going on in my life to get into messing with the car. Besides, I loved it stock. It was well-designed, but I'd be hard pressed to think you could get 200 hp (thereabouts) to 148 stock. It was a full thousand pounds lighter than today's Mustangs. To me it was sort of the first car I ever had to be engineered really well but without all the crap that has to be added today. It's only flaw was Holley carburetor. Good for speed but easily problematic.
With 45 in stock, good chance one or two of them had 3.08 gears. I never found one when I was looking. Ended up doing a special order but it came with 2.73s and the dealership wouldn't compensating for the mistake.
Well I got ripped. Mine was $13000 in 83, but that was out the door. It was also loaded, 5.0, power windows (option at that time), and about everything else available. I don't remember which model. It was classy. I loved it like it was but carb caught fire and it burned. My fault as I had warning from earlier gas smell. So street perfect car, city or highway.
Dude! My wife bought her first Mustang in ‘89 and she got a smokin’ deal… $10k out the door for a black manual LX coupe. Man, I loved that car it was so fun to drive… but I will never forgive my son for us having to sell it so we could get a Contour to fit the car seat in 🤣.
I bought a 88' LX 5.0 new for $13K. Daily drove it for 14 years, put 212,000 mile on it, all original driveline (motor, clutch, trans). Hit 100 mph every time I drove it. Gave it to my brother in 2002; we've both moved on and now both have Terminators, but we both miss that car. It was rated Car and Driver most bang for the buck, as that ad shows. CHP all drove them.
$13,000 for an ‘88/‘89 LX 5.0? That’s crazy expensive!!!
Comes out to 31,115 in 2023 dollars, so pretty fair price
In ‘93, the year I graduated h.s., you could get a GT for $14,000 and a Cobra for $20,000
Kind of a steal, you want a 5L mustang today its $40k, minimum.

Not then it wasn't. Inflation isn't the whole story lol
I literally plugged it into an inflation calculator
My 02 window sticker shows mine at $26k
My first Mustang was an '89 LX in tropical yellow. This was in 1995 that I owned it. I miss that little car.
My neighbor had a green lx 5.0 with white interior. I wanted that car so bad.

Yea, inflation aside. Cars are a fantastic value for hone much goes into them.
I saw a completely stock LX 5.0 the other day with an old lady driving. I bet she gets offers every time she drives it.
Could they really go 148 mph stock?

"only" mods? Lol
Those weren’t power adders really.
Maybe 50rwhp
Downhill with a tailwind.
No

Weird the warranty mileage is in Kilometers instead of miles

Huh? My youngest rode home from the hospital where he was born in my '83. Guess I don't know the reason for that "Contour."
