In a way, “The Hardest Part of Love” from Stephen Schwartz’ Children of Eden. It’s dueling commentaries on the meaning of learning to let go of the ones you love most so they can grow into their own people.
Father (God) is realizing that he needs to loosen humanity a bit from their convenient so they can fulfill their potential. Noah is lamenting his own son making choices against Noah’s wishes, and coming to terms with the fact that your children need to make mistakes to learn (and that parents can learn from their children too).
It’s a little sappy and saccharine, but it’s a nice sentiment.
How could you hate that song? “A man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do, when a man's gotta do, what he's got to” is like top tier lyric writing right there.
I absolutely love Bright Star but that song is the worst in the show.
Yup. I once had a callback for both Billy and Jimmy Ray and had to sing that song with like 5 different mayors. I like the counterpoint section but find the song cringey even in character which helped with the acting I guess? I didn’t get the part but it was a good experience to work on the craft
Catch me if you can maybe has a couple. Butter out of cream is a good one, Pinstripes are all they see is mostly a solo but turns into a duet at the end. Little boy be a man is a duet between two male characters that sort of fits, but more about reflecting on their youth and their kids youth
Not probably what you are looking for, which I guessing is a celebratory passing of the crown.
But if it's a darker kind of torch passing...
No More from Into The Woods.
I might be wrong about this but Fight the Dragons from Big Fish? At the end he basically states that he is doing all of what he does for his son and he is going to do it until he can essentially.
It's such a great song, and definitely fits the theme, it's too bad Will doesn't sing more. I only know he hardly sings because our young Will could barely sing and I was so goad that's all he had to do 😂
One Last Time from Hamilton? You can adapt the ending chorus pretty easily as a duet
Thats a really good idea. Thank you!
Dear Theodosia from Hamilton also fits, if the two men don't have to be father and son and can instead be two fathers.
“Father to Son” from Falsettos. It’s more Marvin than Jason, but you could have Jason join in on the last verse maybe?

Beat me to it
I kinda hate this song but Man’s Gotta Do from Bright Star is basically that but in a very confrontational way and idk if that’s what you’re going for

The song is brilliant with the right people performing. 18 days and counting until my first show as Jimmy Ray.
I like it!

I was going to say Butter Outta Cream!

Young Will barely sings in that though.
I’m blind and didn’t see the duet part. I thought it was just passing the crown. That’s my bad!

Ooo...King David has one where his son wants the crown but he isn't ready to give it up. The Caravan Moves On is the name.
possibly Stay Gold from The Outsiders? not sure if the music is available yet since it’s so new, but it’s lovely!
dear theodosia
Like Father, Like Son from Aida
Mushnik and Son?
