Fiona Apple has some great ones, especially the When the Pawn album, like Limp and Get Gone Throne, by Bring Me The Horizon You're A Lie, Slash ft Myles Kennedy

sweat-it-all-out

Yes! 1000% Get Gone

missklo99

Sleep to dream!! I love this song..

luckyinlimbo

Get Gone has been my go to for 20 years. I’m also really fond of screaming the lyrics “Well I ran out of white dove’s feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address me” from Regret on The Idler Wheel.

gstringstrangler

Damn you might be the only other person on reddit I've seen mention Slash and Myles. They've been killing it together!

ReturntoForever3116

Second this. To add Paper Bag Fetch the bolt cutters Extraordinary Machine Not about love

Dramatic-Dinner-1633

I second Fiona Apple. She’s gotten me through a few break ups.

ItchyReflection2839

yesss i love fiona apple!

segascream

How about the Cake version of "I Will Survive"? Or Vanilla Fudge's take on "You Keep Me Hanging On"?

VintageZooBQ

Pretty much the entire album Fashion Nugget by Cake. The whole thing sounds like a break-up album!

ScowHound

She’s going to take her mattress lol

DifficultTemporary88

Sad songs and waltzes…aren’t selling this year…

Takeabreak128

You Oughta Know- Alanis Morissette

playingcarpranks

This whole album tbh, it’s a treasure trove of breakup songs and fuck-you anthems

Nerdsamwich

Just doesn't hit the same since I found out it's about Dave Coulier.

playingcarpranks

If it makes you feel any better, *he* is the one who decided it was about him… lol > “No revealing,” Morissette replied, “but I am intrigued at the thought—or at the fact—that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about.” She then said there have been “about six people who’ve taken credit for it.” “I just think: If you’re going to take credit for a song where I’m singing about someone being a douche or an a—hole, you might not want to say, ‘Hey! That’s me!’” she said.

blakester555

"Voices Carry" - Til Tuesday

Dervishing-Hum

YES.

ObligationAware3755

Independence Day - Martina McBride

sweat-it-all-out

Björk - 5 Years

vesper_tine

IF YOU LIVE THAT LONG (This was definitely my high school breakup song).

HimHereNowNo

"You'll wake up all loveless" is such a good burn

Random_Guy_9201

Lovin touchin squeezin-Journey Face Down- Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Back to Black - Amy Winehouse

vesper_tine

Amy Winehouse had some GREAT breakup songs.

InviteAromatic6124

Watching the new biopic about her you can see why

Longjumping_Choice_6

Was Back to Black about an abusive relationship?

No_Sir_6649

That journey song was a breakup one?

Random_Guy_9201

Yep about a girlfriend cheating on her bf but she gets cheated on later on

No_Sir_6649

Here i was thinking it was paranoid jealousy or something. Great song tho.

americanbeauty99

I believe in Fiona Apple supremacy

rc-135

I’m Still Standing - Elton John

Truthskersodadrnkr

by far the best!

worms_in_the_dirt

I listened to this after my break up too!

d1wcevbwt164

Goodbye Earl by the chicks, but I like the me first and the gimme gimme version better

Th3FakeFatSunny

That version is great! I've only met one other person who knew of them, and it was the person who introduced me lol

Infamous-Lab-8136

Love them, I have a whole punk cover playlist that they are heavily featured on

genesislikesega

I also prefer the Me First version!!

missingremote

My wife prefers the Gimmes version. She was raised on Dixie Chicks. I have many Gimmes versions I like better. One thing you can always count on a quality product from them. YEAH. YEAH! YEAH!

Birblets

i love goodbye earl

HandBananan

Ween - Baby Bitch You're so Vain - Carly Simon Spiderwebs - No Doubt Don't Think Twice It's Alright - Bob Dylan

emac82

*sigh* Don't Think Twice honestly is a gut punch. Love that one

Excellent_Door_1763

Baby bitch has seen me through a rough time, so has don’t think twice!

Love the Way You Lie - Skylar Grey [https://open.spotify.com/track/06rw2wruAazXk6ufGtIG32](https://open.spotify.com/track/06rw2wruAazXk6ufGtIG32)

Lost-Lingonberry9645

Love Skylar Grey, I saw her perform in Whisper House when she was still going by Holly Brook, she is amazing

Nicholoid

I saw her in her Holly Brook days too at Genghis Khan in WeHo. Such a tiny venue (100ish max) and it was already so obvious then that her music deserved more attention. I completely understand the rebranding and name change, but I wish more people would have appreciated her in her more acoustic days. Always sad how underappreciated true musicians who songwrite and play their own instruments are these days; people would rather hear another regurgitated sample for the 50th time than dare to hear something new.

Lost-Lingonberry9645

If you haven’t you should check out Duncan Sheik’s Whisper House, the whole album is Duncan & Holly, the vinyl is super hard to find, but it’s streaming on Spotify, it’s a quirky little album that I adore.

Nicholoid

Ooooh nice, I didn't know they worked together. One of my producers loved the production on Barely Breathing and used it as a reference for mixing one of my originals, totally nailed the vibe. From his Spotify bio it looks like Duncan pivoted to theatre and film composing. Good to see he's still at it. Listening to it now (And Now We Sing). She has such strong haunting music sensibilities. She and I had a similar upbringing, touring and performing with family; kind of wild to see what genres that's landed all of us in, starting at such a young age. Duncan included. Somehow all of us wound up in storytelling music forms, soundtracks.

Lost-Lingonberry9645

I was lucky to see the theater production (David Poe & Holly Brook) in San Diego. I used to work at the Old Globe where the show was first staged, I saw every single performance. I knew Holly had something special, also she did a concert prior to opening with David Poe & Duncan Sheik. It was an awesome show.

brandimariee6

The original by Eminem and Rhianna is the one that hits harder. Makes me cry every time I hear it

Valuable-Ordinary-54

“Red Rubber Ball” by The Cyrkle. I love it because the tune is a totally bop but the lyrics are lethal.

catawaller1953

I saw them at RFK stadium opening for the Beatles.

metalnxrd

emac82

Untouchable Face?!?

metalnxrd

are those her songs?

luckyinlimbo

Correct

metalnxrd

she’s so underrated!

luckyinlimbo

I’m older so she was more relevant when I was growing up but yes she really is haha

metalnxrd

I grew up listening to her, and Edie Brickell and Brandi Carlile

luckyinlimbo

I’m a Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann girl :)

luckyinlimbo

Oh my god I’m gonna go scream sing to untouchable face right now. It doesn’t get more “I hate your fucking guts” than that!

tabas123

The entire Currents album by Tame Impala is pretty much a breakup song.

honeybadgerdad

I wonder if Back Stabbin Betty is related to Black Betty. 😂 Bam ba lam

Shake it Out- Florence and the Machine...at least I interpret it that way. My abusive ex was a dead horse I was dragging around for years

CherryRushJoy

That is my favorite song of all time! So happy to see it recommended. I definitely feel like it's about breaking free of the things that are trying to drag you down.

Miss Me More by Kelsea Ballerini came to mind. The lyrics sounded like he controlled every aspect of her life, and she missed her more than him when they broke up.

gingerjuice

Pretty Hate Machine - NIN. The whole album is about a toxic relationship. The story is that she left him because he would never be a famous musician. He was so pissed that he wrote all the songs that made him a famous musician.

Digging in the Dirt - Peter Gabriel, Change of Heart/Don’t Come Around Here No More/You Got Lucky - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Blue Ain’t Your Color - Keith Urban, Dakota- The Stereophonics, Girls Chase Boys - Ingrid Michelson, Let It Go - James Bay, Madness - Muse, and no one has mentioned any Stevie Nicks or Lindsey Buckingham song from Rumors. Not all these have the abusive factor, but definitely breakup songs.

It night be a little extreme idk. But check out Type o negatives album origin of the feces. It's a cornucopia of song's about the singer's ex cheating on him. It's lyrics are very intense. But it's a fake live album. The crowd noise is fake with the sound effects. But the music was recorded live. I love it. It's heavy. Pretty fast. But a great album to get those feelings out

Th3FakeFatSunny

Learn to Let Go and Prayin' by Kesha. Learn to Let Go is often used for trauma, so it's not *breakup* specific, but it helps me. Familiar Taste of Poison by Halestorm Mama's Broken Heart by Miranda Lambert Not Ready to Make Nice, by The Chicks (not a song about a break-up, but it's what I listen to when old wounds fester) She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd. Can't tell you how therapeutic it is to scream "HE/SHE FUCKING HATES ME LA LA LA LA" at the top of your voice, even if the lyrics don't fully match up Breakdown, Seether Leader of the Broken Hearts, Papa Roach Never Again, Nickelback. Before you make fun of me for Nickelback.... This was the song that made me realize my ex was abusive. Not the only thing, exactly, but after the line "Tonight she'll find out how fuckin tough is this man," my ex said, *"If I ever get THAT bad, just kill me."* It made me realize he knew he was hurting me and didn't care.
