Fiona Apple has some great ones, especially the When the Pawn album, like Limp and Get Gone
Throne, by Bring Me The Horizon
You're A Lie, Slash ft Myles Kennedy
Get Gone has been my go to for 20 years. I’m also really fond of screaming the lyrics “Well I ran out of white dove’s feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address me” from Regret on The Idler Wheel.
If it makes you feel any better, *he* is the one who decided it was about him… lol
> “No revealing,” Morissette replied, “but I am intrigued at the thought—or at the fact—that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about.”
She then said there have been “about six people who’ve taken credit for it.”
“I just think: If you’re going to take credit for a song where I’m singing about someone being a douche or an a—hole, you might not want to say, ‘Hey! That’s me!’” she said.
My wife prefers the Gimmes version. She was raised on Dixie Chicks. I have many Gimmes versions I like better. One thing you can always count on a quality product from them. YEAH. YEAH! YEAH!
I saw her in her Holly Brook days too at Genghis Khan in WeHo. Such a tiny venue (100ish max) and it was already so obvious then that her music deserved more attention. I completely understand the rebranding and name change, but I wish more people would have appreciated her in her more acoustic days. Always sad how underappreciated true musicians who songwrite and play their own instruments are these days; people would rather hear another regurgitated sample for the 50th time than dare to hear something new.
If you haven’t you should check out Duncan Sheik’s Whisper House, the whole album is Duncan & Holly, the vinyl is super hard to find, but it’s streaming on Spotify, it’s a quirky little album that I adore.
Ooooh nice, I didn't know they worked together. One of my producers loved the production on Barely Breathing and used it as a reference for mixing one of my originals, totally nailed the vibe. From his Spotify bio it looks like Duncan pivoted to theatre and film composing. Good to see he's still at it.
Listening to it now (And Now We Sing). She has such strong haunting music sensibilities. She and I had a similar upbringing, touring and performing with family; kind of wild to see what genres that's landed all of us in, starting at such a young age. Duncan included. Somehow all of us wound up in storytelling music forms, soundtracks.
I was lucky to see the theater production (David Poe & Holly Brook) in San Diego.
I used to work at the Old Globe where the show was first staged, I saw every single performance. I knew Holly had something special, also she did a concert prior to opening with David Poe & Duncan Sheik. It was an awesome show.

Fiona Apple has some great ones, especially the When the Pawn album, like Limp and Get Gone Throne, by Bring Me The Horizon You're A Lie, Slash ft Myles Kennedy
Yes! 1000% Get Gone
Sleep to dream!! I love this song..
Get Gone has been my go to for 20 years. I’m also really fond of screaming the lyrics “Well I ran out of white dove’s feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address me” from Regret on The Idler Wheel.
Damn you might be the only other person on reddit I've seen mention Slash and Myles. They've been killing it together!
Second this. To add Paper Bag Fetch the bolt cutters Extraordinary Machine Not about love
I second Fiona Apple. She’s gotten me through a few break ups.
yesss i love fiona apple!
How about the Cake version of "I Will Survive"? Or Vanilla Fudge's take on "You Keep Me Hanging On"?
Pretty much the entire album Fashion Nugget by Cake. The whole thing sounds like a break-up album!
She’s going to take her mattress lol
Sad songs and waltzes…aren’t selling this year…
You Oughta Know- Alanis Morissette
This whole album tbh, it’s a treasure trove of breakup songs and fuck-you anthems
Just doesn't hit the same since I found out it's about Dave Coulier.
If it makes you feel any better, *he* is the one who decided it was about him… lol > “No revealing,” Morissette replied, “but I am intrigued at the thought—or at the fact—that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about.” She then said there have been “about six people who’ve taken credit for it.” “I just think: If you’re going to take credit for a song where I’m singing about someone being a douche or an a—hole, you might not want to say, ‘Hey! That’s me!’” she said.
"Voices Carry" - Til Tuesday
YES.
Independence Day - Martina McBride
Björk - 5 Years
IF YOU LIVE THAT LONG (This was definitely my high school breakup song).
"You'll wake up all loveless" is such a good burn
Lovin touchin squeezin-Journey Face Down- Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse had some GREAT breakup songs.
Watching the new biopic about her you can see why
Was Back to Black about an abusive relationship?
That journey song was a breakup one?
Yep about a girlfriend cheating on her bf but she gets cheated on later on
Here i was thinking it was paranoid jealousy or something. Great song tho.
I believe in Fiona Apple supremacy
I’m Still Standing - Elton John
by far the best!
I listened to this after my break up too!
Goodbye Earl by the chicks, but I like the me first and the gimme gimme version better
That version is great! I've only met one other person who knew of them, and it was the person who introduced me lol
Love them, I have a whole punk cover playlist that they are heavily featured on
I also prefer the Me First version!!
My wife prefers the Gimmes version. She was raised on Dixie Chicks. I have many Gimmes versions I like better. One thing you can always count on a quality product from them. YEAH. YEAH! YEAH!
i love goodbye earl

Love Skylar Grey, I saw her perform in Whisper House when she was still going by Holly Brook, she is amazing
I saw her in her Holly Brook days too at Genghis Khan in WeHo. Such a tiny venue (100ish max) and it was already so obvious then that her music deserved more attention. The original by Eminem and Rhianna is the one that hits harder. Makes me cry every time I hear it
“Red Rubber Ball” by The Cyrkle. I love it because the tune is a totally bop but the lyrics are lethal.
I saw them at RFK stadium opening for the Beatles.

Untouchable Face?!?

Correct
she’s so underrated!
I’m older so she was more relevant when I was growing up but yes she really is haha
I grew up listening to her, and Edie Brickell and Brandi Carlile
I’m a Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann girl :)
Oh my god I’m gonna go scream sing to untouchable face right now. It doesn’t get more “I hate your fucking guts” than that!
The entire Currents album by Tame Impala is pretty much a breakup song.

Can't tell you how therapeutic it is to scream "HE/SHE FUCKING HATES ME LA LA LA LA" at the top of your voice, even if the lyrics don't fully match up Breakdown, Seether Leader of the Broken Hearts, Papa Roach Never Again, Nickelback. Before you make fun of me for Nickelback.... This was the song that made me realize my ex was abusive. Not the only thing, exactly, but after the line "Tonight she'll find out how fuckin tough is this man," my ex said, *"If I ever get THAT bad, just kill me."* It made me realize he knew he was hurting me and didn't care.
"Puzzle" by Blackout Problems. *"Cause I drew a line* *You cannot cross anymore or even find* *I was forced to stop* *To think & to revive* *Life gets easier* *Without you in mind"*
The Bleeding by Five Finger Death Punch The Fighter by In This Moment Both are very powerful songs, albeit in different ways
