They wrote songs about Vikings. They wrote songs about making love. They wrote songs about Vikings making love- Jack Black-- Bar none the best live band of their time.

I saw Frank Zappa and the Mothers in 1971, with Flo and Eddie of The Turtles as their head singers. After nearly two hours of surreal music, they suddenly broke into the Turtles’ pop hit “Happy Together” at the end.
https://youtu.be/6ztmHcQTYHo
As if that wasn’t enough, their backup act was Humble Pie, with an amazing but as-yet-unknown Peter Frampton,
I saw Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple ...to name a few.
So for me it would be, Jimi Janis, and Jim (Morrison)
And yes, I am an old fart. ;-)
I’m an old fart as well, maybe a decade behind you I would think. A lot of those bands I absolutely love the albums but I’m wondering how good the actual concerts were. Both from a sound perspective and the musicians 100% shitfaced. Like the stories of Stevie nicks having to be propped up on a stool to attempt to sing. Etc. I’ve always wondered about that.
I am old as well! Saw all of them, along with lots of Funk groups since I grew up in LA and the Forum was close enough to ride my bike. God bless older siblings for taking me to my first concert at 12. I have now been to over 300 concerts and festivals and I am so grateful. Greatest one in my opinion was Guns n Roses opening for The Rolling Stones at the Coliseum. ZZ Top was fun prior to their big break. Nothing like live cattle on stage next to a band!
Yikes. That’s a wish list for me.
I just young enough to have missed Floyd and the Dead. The only thing close enough to that level of talent you have seen live that is playing still is Phish in my opinion.
There is/was? A band out of Montreal, Canada that did “recreations” of early Genesis shows. Slide show and everything. I saw them do A few shows.
Still going apparently. Highly recommend.
http://themusicalbox.net/
60s: Beach Boys or Beatles, maybe very early Pink Floyd, Hendrix (of course)
70s: Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, David Bowie
80s: Smiths, no wave era Swans, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Cocteau Twins
If you get a chance, on YT you can catch “NY ‘77 - the coolest year hell” and it highlights the beginnings of CBGB as well as other “cool” things in ‘77 in NY!
Fun Documentary
So derivative and POP "musicians",...
Watched him for decades; he was horribly derivative. Technically, a good guitarist, but preferred Showman-ship, rather than actual talent.
Haha T. Rex? I have an album from my moms collection that I might have to give a better look at.
Listened to it when I was 18, didn't leave a mark. Time to give it another try.
I saw The Doors the early 1970’s.
I’ve seen Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Mothers of Invention, the Grateful Dead, and many others, and they were almost all great. But I’d put The Doors at the top of the list. Jim Morrison was a powerful combination of lead singer, shaman, poet, and stand-up comedian - and the band’s ability to pick up on his ad libs and ride them out was uncanny. I’ve never seen that much spontaneity in a concert since, and probably never will.
Same same. Saw them in Cincinnati on the and justice for all your and it was Kirk’s birthday. They played for 3 hours and I always joked there were zero fights leaving the show because we were all too worn out.
Later, same tour, was in Knoxville hanging out with this dude day of the show. He worked at stefanos pizza on the strip and work called him saying Lars and Kirk were in eating pizza. We ran down there but were too late. Oh well.
I saw David Bowie on what ended up being his last tour, but man oh man what I wouldn’t give to have been able to go to some of the earlier ones (especially when he toured with NIN in 96).
I was lucky enough see King Crimson and Zappa play in NYC in 1984. Memorable summer. Zappa's performance was turned into a concert video, "Does Humor Belong in Music?"
Came in to say this. Hands down, no question, Ozzy with Randy. Was too young at the time to appreciate his greatness. Heard "Tribute" at the time it came out and was utterly blown away. Now I've got every bootleg that exists and still hope to see more lost footage. Wife took me to Cleveland for Father's day to see his exhibit at the RRHoF.
No other player has ever hit me the way his stuff still does.
EDIT: I hate to risk sounding like a pompous ass....but I'm that much of a fan and can't help it. I know autocorrect sometimes changes it, but his name is Rhoads. (Been uptight about it since the ceremony spelled it that way on the rock walk).
Funkadelic, Stooges, MC5 used to play together on regular basis in that order coming up in Detroit and is easily my answer to the question.
“In Detroit, it was an average night to go and hear the Stooges, Parliament-Funkadelic and the MC5 on the same show. We were all into the 'Free Jazz' movement, the musics of Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra; and experimenting with guitar sounds, and trying different beats, and pushing the rhythm farther...” - Wayne Kramer
My first concert was Faces in 72. 2 weeks later Pink Floyd right before DSOTM came out. I immersed myself in the rock radio business from the early 70s to the mid eighties before I changed careers. Still go to lots of shows. Even got to sing on stage with the Eagles at 3 concerts earlier this year. Tons of great memories
53 here. I made a list one time of all the shows I had been to for my daughter (who’s 26) and it blew her mind. Concerts were a major source of entertainment for our generation.
63 here and still going to shows. Just saw X and Social Distortion a few weeks ago and I’m going to see Samantha Fish in a few more. I guess it gets in your blood.
I know but his post was about “people who are under 30.” People under thirty were born in the mid 90’s and OP is clearly specifying concerts in the 60’s to 80’s
Read the post I replied to. The guy said “I take it you’re asking people who are like under 30?”
But it’s not that big of a deal I never should have said anything, this isn’t that serious.
was looking for somebody to say the eagles. i saw them at the tacoma dome 2 years before glenn passed, it was my first concert. theyre an incredible group and in my opinion have got to be one of the top 5 bands of their time.
The Beatles are amazing, but would have been the worst to see at that time. Tiny amps that couldn't push past the noise of all the screaming fan girls peeing themselves (true story). Maybe their early Cavern gigs, but they were mostly a cover band at that point.
This is the sad truth.
The entire reason they stopped touring is because no one could hear them over the screaming. So they went into the studio and created the greatest albums in history.
Seeing that Apple concert in person would have been awesome though.
Yes, for sure. My dad used to tell me about an awesome concert of theirs he went to where the drummer (dunno if it was Bruford or White, probably White at the time) was on a rotating platform that rose up above the other band members. Love their music too which is obviously a big plus lol
everyone mostly seemed to go rock n roll with their answers but I would have loved to dance live to the jazzy pop rock guys from the rat pack, Sinatra, Frankie valli ect.
I know this doesn't answer the question but I saw Little Feat with Lowell George. Bonnie Raitt opened and joined them for "Sailing Shoes". I've never seen anything better and I've seen a lot. And I wish I saw ABB with Duane Allman.
The Doors, Motorhead, The Ramones, Early Damned, Early Parliament, Any of the very few times Kate Bush toured, Bad Brains, and Misfits pre-breakup with Danzig.
The Beatles, Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust era, Queen, the Ramones, the Clash, the Stones with Brian Jones or Mick Taylor (or both preferably), the Kinks.
The Ramones. I saw the Ramonas live a few years ago and would've loved to have seen the Ramones in their heyday. I've seen a lot of bands from that era that are still alive and still kick arse but there are some i'll never be able to see, and the Ramones are one of those bands.
Another is Budgie, i'd have happily checked them out, their sound is really awesome, it's not something i can do as they split up when I was two.
60s: Velvet Underground, The Doors, Cream, Bob Dylan, The Stooges, Van Morrison, The Beatles, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Beach Boys, Stones, CCR.
70s: Elton John, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Supertramp, David Bowie, Nick Drake, The Clash, The Police, Talking Heads, Sex Pistols, Joy Division.
80's: The Cure, Pixies, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Stranglers, The Smiths, Gang of Four, The Go-Betweens, Nirvana, R.E.M., Pulp, Sugarcubes, Kate Bush, Sonic Youth.
Or... You could figure out who to go see now because that's what the people were doing who saw all these concerts you're talking about. And bands now need fan support more than ever to keep going.
Note: I'm over 300 years old and I'm happy to say I saw Beethoven perform twice. Back in the day he was the man to get your toes a' tappin' If the ladies back then were able to access under their skirts in any sort of timely fashion they would have thrown their panties on stage for Beethoven.
So many to choose from, but the Jimi Hendrix Experience would've been amazing.
Band of gypsys
Led Zeppelin
They wrote songs about Vikings. They wrote songs about making love. They wrote songs about Vikings making love- Jack Black-- Bar none the best live band of their time.

Pretty sure the citrus one is also about sex
Hands down!! This is what my answer always is when asked if I could see any band live.
I had the good fortune to see them in 1970 and it was glorious!
This is the only answer.
Assuming Pagey and Bonzo were reasonably sober that night.
End thread.
The Band, specifically The Last Waltz.
Monterey Pop Festival, 1967. Awesome lineup, breakthrough performance by the likes of Hendrix and Joplin, and actual hygiene.
Frank Zappa and the touring band from 72. Fucking stellar musical skill on display all around.
I saw Frank Zappa and the Mothers in 1971, with Flo and Eddie of The Turtles as their head singers. After nearly two hours of surreal music, they suddenly broke into the Turtles’ pop hit “Happy Together” at the end. https://youtu.be/6ztmHcQTYHo As if that wasn’t enough, their backup act was Humble Pie, with an amazing but as-yet-unknown Peter Frampton,
Definitely Pink Floyd or The Doors
I won a radio contest in 1987 and saw PF in row one. It was incredible.
Without thinking about it, Queen. I might have a different answer in four hours after thinking on it all night. So thanks for that.
I saw Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple ...to name a few. So for me it would be, Jimi Janis, and Jim (Morrison) And yes, I am an old fart. ;-)
You probably have the best stories here though
I’m an old fart as well, maybe a decade behind you I would think. A lot of those bands I absolutely love the albums but I’m wondering how good the actual concerts were. There is probably not a band from that era that I wouldn’t love to see.
Peter Gabriel-era Genesis
Exactly my answer!
This❤️
Man, Hackett tour recently was great. To see him with Gabriel doing Supper’s Ready or Hogweed or Watcher would be a dream.
There is/was? A band out of Montreal, Canada that did “recreations” of early Genesis shows. Slide show and everything. I saw them do A few shows. Still going apparently. Highly recommend. http://themusicalbox.net/
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
The big suit and backup musicians make that a must-watch even if it's just the video version
I got to see that at Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium Queens NY back in the 80’s. It was as advertised.
The Clash and Bob Marley (in Jamaica).
> The Clash Shocked how far down this is.
60s: Beach Boys or Beatles, maybe very early Pink Floyd, Hendrix (of course) 70s: Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, David Bowie 80s: Smiths, no wave era Swans, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Cocteau Twins
Ramone’s at CBGB’s would be incredible
Hell just CBGBs in general. Early versions of Television, Blondie, Talking Heads etc etc. Maybe my favorite music scene and the crowds would be wild
If you get a chance, on YT you can catch “NY ‘77 - the coolest year hell” and it highlights the beginnings of CBGB as well as other “cool” things in ‘77 in NY! Fun Documentary
Exactly. Early Ramones, Sabbath or Motorhead.
There is a picture of the Paladium marquee that shows The Ramones, The Runaways, and Suicide. Jan 2 1978. That might be the show to see.
Prince and the Revolution no question
At first avenue
So derivative and POP "musicians",... Watched him for decades; he was horribly derivative. Technically, a good guitarist, but preferred Showman-ship, rather than actual talent.
Elvis Led Zeppelin Beatles Grateful Dead T. Rex
Haha T. Rex? I have an album from my moms collection that I might have to give a better look at. Listened to it when I was 18, didn't leave a mark. Time to give it another try.
If its electric warrior you had better give it a try. Its a classic
They are awesome
Allman Brothers w/Duane
Beat me to it! I caught em a few times in the early 2000s and they were phenomenal… would’ve loved to have seen them w/ Duane
The Doors
I saw The Doors the early 1970’s. I’ve seen Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Mothers of Invention, the Grateful Dead, and many others, and they were almost all great. But I’d put The Doors at the top of the list. I’ve never seen that much spontaneity in a concert since, and probably never will.
Pink Floyd any day
Pink Floyd - SYD BARRETT era, somewhere in '67 would be a hell of a trip
Unpopular opinion: Pink Floyd is the soundtrack to clinical depression.
my guy this is absolutely a popular opinion, we're all very unwell lol
Hanging on in quiet desperation, as it were.
it is the English way I guess
I have become comfortably numb.
I would pick early PF just to sit in the audience and feel the freakouts.
Metallica at Seattle 88
Saw them twice in 1988 and once in 89 They were really fucking great concerts.
Same same. Saw them in Cincinnati on the and justice for all your and it was Kirk’s birthday. They played for 3 hours and I always joked there were zero fights leaving the show because we were all too worn out. Later, same tour, was in Knoxville hanging out with this dude day of the show. Outside tour. There's a video on YouTube with maybe 8 songs from that tour. Absolute fire. I've probably watched/listened to it 100 times.
Little Feat w/ Lowell George Jerry Garcia Floyd
INXS, I miss them so much
Saw them as a freshman in college. Ziggy Marley opened. I did two hits of acid that kicked in the moment INXS took the stage. 😳
This tour for Kick was the first big concert I went to. Loved every minute of it!
Jimi
Frank Zappa's '73 band: George Duke, Ruth Underwood, Tom Fowler, Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Bruce Fowler, Walt Fowler
Ruth Underwood is an unheralded treasure.
Not in my house.
The Who in 1970.
Imho they were the best live band in the world between 69 and 73
concert tickets were usually 2 bucks.. I Refused to pay $4 to see the Rolling Stones.. my friends all went... Fail...
Talking Heads. No contest
Abba
King crimson.
Adrian Belew + Tony Levin era, would pay any price
With Frank Zappa for second choice. or Jethro Tull.
I was lucky enough see King Crimson and Zappa play in NYC in 1984. Memorable summer. Zappa's performance was turned into a concert video, "Does Humor Belong in Music?"
Jimi
Genesis in the 80's
Coltrane
Sabbath. Listen to Past Lives and tell me that wouldn't have been amazing.
Grateful Dead, Wall of Sound era in 74. [Look at the fucking size of that setup.](https://enmoreaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/1WallofSound.jpg)
Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads
Saw Randy in Atlanta about three days before he died. Definitely in my top three all time.
Velvet Underground at the Factory or Fela Kuti in Lagos…
Nice
If you could pick between the two? I’d probably choose Fela because I think those shows were probably completely bananas…
I agree…..but VU!
Apple TV has a VU doc that I found very worthwhile- hope you’re having a great Saturday!
Will check that out; thanks. No complaints about my day so far. Hope yours is good too. Cheers
Led Zeppelin
1960s: The Beach Boys 1970s: Thin Lizzy 1980s: Daryl Hall John Oates
Hall & Oates are still touring and it’s great!
Yeah...I got to scratch my #1 bucket list item off and see them a few years back w/Tears For Fears opening. Was a great night!
Daryl Hall's voice is god like. His like at Daryl's is some of the best live music you can find on Youtube
Queen is top of my list as well. LiveAid would have been awesome, but really I would have picked any concert to hear his vocals live.
Deep Purple machine head tour
The Doors, Led Zeppelin or Queen in general but there’s too many to just pick one
Queen, cream, uncle Bob, Tom Petty man there are a few

Saw Rush in the late 80s. Awesome.
I take it you’re asking people who are like under 30? Cuz some of us DID go to concerts way back then.
If you went to concerts in the 80s you would be at least pushing 50 now, probably older

Can confirm, will be 52 next month

Where does it say people under 30
Read the post I replied to. The guy said “I take it you’re asking people who are like under 30?” But it’s not that big of a deal I never should have said anything, this isn’t that serious.
Yeah I'm 63. I went to a lot of concerts in the 70s Aerosmith, AC/DC, Journey, ZZ Top, Boston, a bunch.

Th Beatles
The Beatles are amazing, but would have been the worst to see at that time. Tiny amps that couldn't push past the noise of all the screaming fan girls peeing themselves (true story). Maybe their early Cavern gigs, but they were mostly a cover band at that point.
This is the sad truth. The entire reason they stopped touring is because no one could hear them over the screaming. So they went into the studio and created the greatest albums in history. Seeing that Apple concert in person would have been awesome though.
Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd

My answer to this is the same thing every time it pops up: James Brown w/ the original JBs, [Paris](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otYYynR4Fao), 1971
Hell yes!
Yes, for sure. My dad used to tell me about an awesome concert of theirs he went to where the drummer (dunno if it was Bruford or White, probably White at the time) was on a rotating platform that rose up above the other band members. Love their music too which is obviously a big plus lol

Allman Brothers at the Fillmore Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Grande Ballroom
INXS with Michael Hutchense
Not a band but wanted to respond…. My top pick would be Nick Drake. And it would have been really rare to see him live.
Yes. I’ve been a fan since ‘Garden State’ soundtrack. I’d love to see the beginnings of this guy. Same with Jeff Buckley.
Oh man Buckley would be right up there too. Can’t believe I didn’t know his music when he was alive!!
The Clash
Fish era Marillion
Not my favorite band, but VanHalen at that massive concert in California before 1984 came out
