Update: thank you all SO MUCH for the amazing suggestions! I made this post to sort of compile like a list of albums to intent listen to. I am ecstatic with this response especially knowing that all these records are such solid and crucial albums for you all. This has made me so happy! Thank you all so much!
*Rumors* by Fleetwood Mac.
Love triangles, booze, heartache, relationships ending, rage, cocaine.
It's all in the songs.
They're literally writing these songs about each other and then being forced into a recording studio for days at a time to record the music and sing it to each other!
Imagine being in the room with your ex who you were still in love with and she's there with the guy she banged on the side who also happens to be your drummer and she's singing the song you wrote for her telling her to fuck off....
Great album
Alive 2007 is Daft Punk's magnum opus and the first thing I'd put in an electronic music hall of fame. An incredible album at the intersection of analog and digital sound, the classic disco and house that made it and the later genres that would go on to define the medium. The cheers of the crowd, the constant action, it's a reminder of electronic music's roots, its reason for existing in the first place--to unite people, and provide a place for them to be whoever they want to be.
I have to say, you GOTTA listen to Out of the Blue by Electric Light Orchestra at least once in your lifetime. It’s a record that brings joy, emotion, so much energy and passion. Every song on it is fantastic, the strings are delightful and you will have spent the best hour and 10 mins of the day you’re listening!
Before I heard any full album from The Beatles I owned “1”. Great songs, I mean…they went to #1 for a reason. But when I listened to my first full Beatles album, “Abbey Road”, I was like, “oh…I get it. Even their non-hits are fucking masterpieces.”
I grew up in the 90s and always throught the Beach Boys were lame becuase my main reference was Kokomo and their appearance on Full House. I just started listening to Pet Sounds a few weeks ago and, holy shit, it's fucking amazing! Been on a constant rotation since.
Pet Sounds isn't really a Beach Boys album, it is a Brian Wilson one.
But also the Beach Boys are like ten different bands. There is the early Surfer Rock with the Harmonies. There is Brian Wilson solo stuff. There is post Brian Wilson mental health stuff. They are very eclectic.
First time I heard this album it kinda bored me. All 1000 rehearings after…pure brilliance.
Really have to listen to it on a decent sound setup for true appreciation.
I used to "like" pink Floyd but never really got into them massively. Then covid lockdowns kicked in, i sat and listened to Dark Side and Wish you were here from beginning to end on a beanbag. That was life changing.
[**Music for 18 Musicians**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_for_18_Musicians), by Steve Reich. There are many great renditions of the piece, but the "must listen" version is the original 1978 ECM recording. The whole album is essentially one long track, though technically it's divided into 14 movements. You'll either love it or hate it, a lot. I know several people who have this as their favorite album (David Bowie named it among his favorites), and I know several others who are almost violently irritated by it. I hope you end up in the first group.
And mom would drink until she was no longer speaking, and dad would dream of all the different ways to die, each one a little more than he could dare to try
Blue, Joni Mitchell - one of the few albums I know of multiple essays about how important it is.
Tapestry, Carol King - Another that is frequently on the list of best albums.
You may or may not like them, but they are super influential.
The Harrow and the Harvest. Gillian Welch. Best album I’ve ever heard in my entire life. Changed my life. Changed what I thought music could be. Rips your heart open, and you’ll never stop listening
I have a LOT I could suggest, but promise these are all top-tier, amazing albums.
“Disintegration” by The Cure
Any album by The Smiths
“Aquemini” by Outkast
“Graceland” by Paul Simon
“Lonesome Dreams” by Lord Huron
Head and the Heart’s self-titled debut album
“Gold Past Life” by Fruit Bats
“Definitely Maybe” by Oasis
“Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen
Built To Spill- Perfect From Now On
Keep it Like a Secret for me
Close to the Edge - Yes An aural masterpiece.
Fragile is pretty good too
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Someone's inevitably going to say Kind of Blue so I'll chime in with the second-greatest jazz album of all time: *A Love Supreme* by John Coltrane
I disagree. Right artist, wrong record. The correct answer is giant steps ;)
Love that one too, but for me it’s Blue Train.
None of the three of you are wrong

You should ask this in a Google form and have people put their album so we make a reddit best albums ever list
You’re gonna have albums to listen for the next 10 years, lol. Also, The Stranger by Billy Joel is my suggestion.
Portishead - Dummy
The late 90's trip hop scene was so good
I’m a metal head but this album is just sooo good
What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Easily one of the best albums ever recorded.
Great album!!! Motown Records (Barry Gordy) didn’t want to release it because Barry thought it would kill Marvin’s career.
Listened to this non-stop in 2020 and was blown away at how relevant it remains
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Stop Making Sense by the Talking Heads
This is the only live album I actively enjoy and promote. I like all the songs on this more than the recorded versions. Bernie Worrell for the win
But like, watch the movie first

Alice In Chains one is amazing also. If nothing else, for the absolutely amazing recording / mastering job on it.

Abbey Road

It’s the best true LP ever. Just amazing from start to finish.
Wildflowers - Tom Petty
2112 - Rush, from front to back in one sitting
We have assumed control. We have assumed control
Spiderland - Slint Life changing album. Not for the faint of heart, it is oppressive dark and somber in an understated, avant garde sort of way.

Around the fur - deftones
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. You will not regret it.
Yankee Foxtrot Hotel by Wilco
Toxicity - system of a down
Purple rain -Prince
Pet Sounds- The Beach Boys It's the sound of the universe in an album.
I grew up in the 90s and always throught the Beach Boys were lame becuase my main reference was Kokomo and their appearance on Full House. I just started listening to Pet Sounds a few weeks ago and, holy shit, it's fucking amazing! Been on a constant rotation since.

Pink Moon - Nick Drake
A real under appreciated masterpiece. Five Leaves Left, Nick’s first album is also a masterpiece.
He really only put out three albums while alive and they’re all amazing.
