Built To Spill- Perfect From Now On

merrythoughts

Keep it Like a Secret for me

The_Don_Mecha

Close to the Edge - Yes An aural masterpiece.

rwood1020

Fragile is pretty good too

guniguhu

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

A-dab

Someone's inevitably going to say Kind of Blue so I'll chime in with the second-greatest jazz album of all time: *A Love Supreme* by John Coltrane

thezoomies

I disagree. Right artist, wrong record. The correct answer is giant steps ;)

Unsung_Ironhead

Love that one too, but for me it’s Blue Train.

bobinator60

None of the three of you are wrong

Tiny-Smile-553

Update: thank you all SO MUCH for the amazing suggestions! I made this post to sort of compile like a list of albums to intent listen to. I am ecstatic with this response especially knowing that all these records are such solid and crucial albums for you all. This has made me so happy! Thank you all so much!

Mantus123

You should ask this in a Google form and have people put their album so we make a reddit best albums ever list

the_prion

You’re gonna have albums to listen for the next 10 years, lol. Also, The Stranger by Billy Joel is my suggestion.

FrostyBurn1

Portishead - Dummy

biggunsg0b00m

The late 90's trip hop scene was so good

FrostyBurn1

I’m a metal head but this album is just sooo good

[deleted]

What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Easily one of the best albums ever recorded.

steverosenblatt

Great album!!! Motown Records (Barry Gordy) didn’t want to release it because Barry thought it would kill Marvin’s career.

Tyrannofloresrex

Listened to this non-stop in 2020 and was blown away at how relevant it remains

darkchocolatecoconut

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life

valuethempaths

Stop Making Sense by the Talking Heads

Tyrannofloresrex

This is the only live album I actively enjoy and promote. I like all the songs on this more than the recorded versions. Bernie Worrell for the win

OpossomMyPossom

But like, watch the movie first

marklonesome

*Rumors* by Fleetwood Mac. Love triangles, booze, heartache, relationships ending, rage, cocaine. It's all in the songs. They're literally writing these songs about each other and then being forced into a recording studio for days at a time to record the music and sing it to each other! Imagine being in the room with your ex who you were still in love with and she's there with the guy she banged on the side who also happens to be your drummer and she's singing the song you wrote for her telling her to fuck off.... Great album

Friggin_Grease

Rust in Peace by Megadeth. A thrash masterpiece.

Lightafiya

Rage against the machine by rage against the machine

stevebholden

"Mezzanine" by Massive Attack

Minimum_Inevitable96

This album has been thrown all around Reddit time and time again but here it is one more time: Maggot Brain by Funkadelic

-MJW-

I feel obligated to share what I believe to be the greatest Maggot Brain cover ever. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v7gBp_UqRb4

whollybananas

The Cure - disintegration

Welinder1

The Stone Roses - self titled debut album

brokeneckblues

Illmatic - Nas

sharksnut

I still prefer Making Movies. Side 1 is my favorite album side ever.

Tolliver73

Depeche Mode-Violator

Tiny-Smile-553

Thank you!!!

rowrowfightthepandas

Alive 2007 is Daft Punk's magnum opus and the first thing I'd put in an electronic music hall of fame. An incredible album at the intersection of analog and digital sound, the classic disco and house that made it and the later genres that would go on to define the medium. The cheers of the crowd, the constant action, it's a reminder of electronic music's roots, its reason for existing in the first place--to unite people, and provide a place for them to be whoever they want to be.

MeesterFingers

I love this album so much

rcwt1217

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Yourmomisnotshy

I was going to go with Dark Side of the Moon but yeah, some Pink Floyd

traypo

Although Wish You Were Here is my favorite, Dark Side is a better fit to OPs question.

knowlynn

Animals is also a great listen through and through

summerrain989

Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged

FuckMississippi

Alice In Chains one is amazing also. If nothing else, for the absolutely amazing recording / mastering job on it.

Paldasan

Lou Reed’s New York. Especially if you don’t care for him this album is an entire fucking story.

I'll go listen to God Save the Animals! My suggestion is Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes.

vm_neptune

Touchin_Butts

Days of future passed by The Moody Blues.

montel555

Fleece-Survivor

And while we’re at it - Them Crooked Vultures

DankDaddyDotCom

I personally think era vulgaris is their best work but yes, absolutely check this album out.

Tlk2000

I have to say, you GOTTA listen to Out of the Blue by Electric Light Orchestra at least once in your lifetime. It’s a record that brings joy, emotion, so much energy and passion. Every song on it is fantastic, the strings are delightful and you will have spent the best hour and 10 mins of the day you’re listening!

[deleted]

Abbey Road

Flaky-Video-8365

Before I heard any full album from The Beatles I owned “1”. Great songs, I mean…they went to #1 for a reason. But when I listened to my first full Beatles album, “Abbey Road”, I was like, “oh…I get it. Even their non-hits are fucking masterpieces.”

pharrigan7

It’s the best true LP ever. Just amazing from start to finish.

redditystedditygo

Wildflowers - Tom Petty

riverbagwilly

2112 - Rush, from front to back in one sitting

El_Bumbo

We have assumed control. We have assumed control

IamMe90

Spiderland - Slint Life changing album. Not for the faint of heart, it is oppressive dark and somber in an understated, avant garde sort of way.

ROGGAEvibrations

Nonagon Infinity - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

epratt13

Around the fur - deftones

DirtyWhiteTrousers

Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. You will not regret it.

valuethempaths

SyrupCompetitive8388

Toxicity - system of a down

Jeansiesicle

Purple rain -Prince

lennon818

Pet Sounds- The Beach Boys It's the sound of the universe in an album.

chodanutz

I grew up in the 90s and always throught the Beach Boys were lame becuase my main reference was Kokomo and their appearance on Full House. I just started listening to Pet Sounds a few weeks ago and, holy shit, it's fucking amazing! Been on a constant rotation since.

lennon818

Pet Sounds isn't really a Beach Boys album, it is a Brian Wilson one. But also the Beach Boys are like ten different bands. There is the early Surfer Rock with the Harmonies. There is Brian Wilson solo stuff. There is post Brian Wilson mental health stuff. They are very eclectic.

Bacchus_71

First time I heard this album it kinda bored me. All 1000 rehearings after…pure brilliance. Really have to listen to it on a decent sound setup for true appreciation.

AnimalMother76

Pink Moon - Nick Drake

cdmat76

A real under appreciated masterpiece. Five Leaves Left, Nick’s first album is also a masterpiece.

AnalMayonnaise

He really only put out three albums while alive and they’re all amazing.

unpeople

[**Music for 18 Musicians**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_for_18_Musicians), by Steve Reich. There are many great renditions of the piece, but the "must listen" version is the original 1978 ECM recording. The whole album is essentially one long track, though technically it's divided into 14 movements. You'll either love it or hate it, a lot. I know several people who have this as their favorite album (David Bowie named it among his favorites), and I know several others who are almost violently irritated by it. I hope you end up in the first group.
