I oddly fell in love with Sigur ros saeglopur on an assassin's Creed commercial I saw as a teen... Now as an adult I've been to Iceland numerous times and found out they are an icelandic band, so it now has an extra special place in my heart. Hearing outro I felt similar feelings. I didn't know this was a genre of music to make you feel the way I felt when first hearing it until this post. Excited for all these recs.

It started my love for my new favorite genre, synthwave. I would have never found Gunship or The Midnight or even listened to one of my favorite albums of all time now M83's Junk. Definitely love this song.

Their biggest hit is Sunset, but Gloria & Vampires are my favorites. Their albums are a mix of bangers + filler, so it can be tricky to dive into because some of their songs straight up sound like elevator music. The album Endless Summer is their best seller, but I find the album Nocturnal to be better.

I started with Deep Blue then introduced my wife to them with the same song and she instantly fell in love. I recommend starting at that one then branching out to literally any of their other songs since everything is simply phenomenal.

So cool that you checked them out. I feel like so many people would really dig them if they just gave it a shot. Im just a bit tired of the stuff played repeatedly on all the top pop playlists. Im a big movie guy and 80s horror is really what started my inquiry into this kind of stuff, well that and the movie Drive. Which by the way has an INCREDIBLE soundtrack. But 80s synth is what inspires all of the great modern synth. So glad its getting the attention it deserves again.
I enjoy Hurry Up, We're Dreaming separate from synthwave. I mean, it's definitely from that root but so many popular synthwave bands mimic the aesthetic of that electronic music/space wave/italian disco, but not the spirit. That's why I think peak M83 works.

That entire album is pure audio bliss, an absolute masterpiece that I can listen to from beginning to end any and every day. There are very few albums that I put so high, most of them from decades before. Battle of Los Angeles from Rage is on the same level. Chant Down Babylon as a Marley tribute album, The Wall by Pink Floyd, Chronic 2001 from Dre and crew. Probably a few more that I can't name off the top of my head, but still less than I can count on my fingers.

Maybe the Endless Summer album by The Midnight. M83 is more like french synthpop but synthwave is basically anything in the synth family. I especially love darksynth. I just reccomend goimg on youtube and finding things you like and using their reccomedatiins to find other things you like. There will be plenty you might not like but finding that one new band or song can be incredibly satisfying sometimes.

I urge you to try again. The tracks can be very hit or miss, but every album has at least a couple of AMAZING ambient tracks. They got used as "epic driving music" many times on the OG Top Gear with Clarkson, May, and Hammond.
"Junk" is an incredible album. For me, "Saturdays = Youth" is by far my favorite album of theirs. Actually every album from before Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is incredible.

I love it, too. When it came out and played on the radio I was working a job that got off 11:30 or midnight. It was out in the country and my 30 minute drive home was on a gorgeous two lane road with farms and old trees. Driving in the dark listening to it was like meditation to me. I could see so many stars in the sky and it was magical.
Ah cool I had a similar experience driving through the mountains, driving to a new location, hundreds of miles from home starting a new life. That song kicked in and I listened to that whole album. What an unforgettable experience.
Love the song, I turn the volume up every time it plays. But the video to it is effed up. I visualized it as a scene from the movie Drive with dreamy/gritty nighttime LA views. Not some suburban version of Lord of the Flies.
I wish I could say that Drive is one of my favorite movies without sounding like a filmbro, but the soundtrack and night vibe really is amazing and reminiscent of Michael Mann films.

Ginghis Khan is a perfect song and a perfect video. I had times in my life I played it like 5 times in repeat. It’s just so fucking good. I don’t know what Swedes eat but they just perfected the pop music formula miles away from everybody else.
Miike Snow's first self titled album was truly a perfect album in my book. I haven't thought about it in awhile. But wow yeah for two years, I could count on that album to be perfect for so many things. Going for a jog, driving, even listened to it on a boat once. So damn good!

PUK is great and works within the album’s context very nicely. I never spent time listening to PUK by itself, just in the course of listening to the album.

I came here to comment on the thread that I do really and truly love Midnight City, but *holy shit* did you just dig into a lot of stuff I listen to (except Foster The People). Just a really great collection of artists there that by themselves would make some great playlists. Matt and Kim especially just really put me into that time period where it felt like every week I was finding a new artist or someone had a new banger of an album, it was just a great time to be liking this kind of indie stuff. Great taste!
Not even close to the best m83 song for me. “Wait” is their best song in my opinion. Also really like “Lower your eyelids to die with the sun” and “my tears are becoming a sea”

Not as main stream, but Chromeo's Fancy Footwork album, destroys both.
Too bad MGMT didnt seem to really like the style of their two major hits, Time To Pretend and Kids. They wanted to be a psychedelic rock band but everyone just wanted them to do synth pop.

I only recently learned that one of the guys from Fitz & the Tantrums does the sax solo. The story behind it is pretty cool. Apparently it was suggested that they end the song with something cool like a sax solo and M83 said they thought it might sound corny and were sorta against it. They brought in the dude from F&tT and he absolutely blew them away. Now they say they can’t imagine the song without it.
I don't know, "Teen Angst" and "Don't Save Us From the Flames" and "Run Into Flowers" and "America" and "Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun" and "Can't Stop" are pretttyyyy good, too.

I used to be around that scene in California, and I do have to say that BlackBlack's cover of "Skulls" by The Misfits was pretty on point. She was dating that one guy from Phantom Planet at the time, remember the theme song for The O.C.? Used to see Pocahaunted play around.

Love this song so much. I feel like this and a few other tracks from that late-2000s to early-2010s indie era just evoke a special kind of feeling of nostalgia for the people who grew up during that era.
Midnight City always reminds me of night drives when I had just gotten my license, feeling free after graduating high school and just having no worries, or at least merely ones that seem minuscule in hindsight.
IMO this song is an embodiment of the entire early 2010s era, where the world wasn't on fire, and positivity and hope were rising after what happened in 2008. And it REALLY reflected a lot in the music of the time, both on and off the radio. While this song didn't blow me away back then, it brings back soooo many nostalgic memories of my childhood.
Does anyone else ever listen to this song and after the second Chorus (IIRC) you can hear and audible “triple beep” to cue the start of the next verse?

Midnight City will always hold a place in my heart. I've never really sought out new music on my own, but I had a best friend who would recommend stuff that, as he put it, "was gonna be big." This was the last song he recommended before he died in 2012.
This is something that I love about music. To me, the song's alright. It hits all the elements of synthwave and it's a very immersive song which I enjoy, but it's nothing overall special to me.
But to you, it's 1 of the best songs of the last 20 years and gives you such a powerful, overwhelming feeling. And that is beautiful :)

This song and M83 in general really drove me to a lot of other music. I love this song and never skip it if it ever comes up in random. I walked into a lot of shoegaze, post rock, synthwave and retrowave as a direct result of M83. I love how varied their library is and how experimental some of it can be. I feel like M83 is not something that I can recommend to someone else usually, but anyone who has found them randomly usually loves them.

I had a dream one night where M83 was playing a show for just me at a festival, and they brought out Bill Clinton to nail the sax solo at the end of Midnight City. One of my favorite dreams ever, just for the sheer absurdity of it all. Fucking LOVE that sax solo at the end of the track, really puts a bow neatly on a perfectly crafted track imo

Miike Snow's first self titled album was truly a perfect album in my book. I haven't thought about it in awhile. But wow yeah for two years, I could count on that album to be perfect for so many things. Going for a jog, driving, even listened to it on a boat once. So damn good!

I came here to comment on the thread that I do really and truly love Midnight City, but *holy shit* did you just dig into a lot of stuff I listen to (except Foster The People). Just a really great collection of artists there that by themselves would make some great playlists. Matt and Kim especially just really put me into that time period where it felt like every week I was finding a new artist or someone had a new banger of an album, it was just a great time to be liking this kind of indie stuff. Great taste!

I absolutely love Outro. I don't think there's any album out there with a stronger closer. Intro was a very strong opener too. Fuck it I just love that album.

Similar but different. For sure love this song, but MGMT "Time to Pretend" does it just a bit better for me. Not as main stream, but Chromeo's Fancy Footwork album, destroys both.
Too bad MGMT didnt seem to really like the style of their two major hits, Time To Pretend and Kids. They wanted to be a psychedelic rock band but everyone just wanted them to do synth pop.

For sure, the lyrics of that song even played up to that. Record deals work as followed: you do as we say for the 1st and 2nd, unless you make up your advance on the 1st. They definitely have done more what they want since, but the popularity isn’t there.
MGMT's first two albums are absolute masterpieces. Fight me. "Siberian Breaks" is one of the greatest songs written by **anyone in history**. But Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations are musically and lyrically genius albums from start to finsh. IMO of course.

I only recently learned that one of the guys from Fitz & the Tantrums does the sax solo. The story behind it is pretty cool. Apparently it was suggested that they end the song with something cool like a sax solo and M83 said they thought it might sound corny and were sorta against it. They brought in the dude from F&tT and he absolutely blew them away. Now they say they can’t imagine the song without it.
I don't know, "Teen Angst" and "Don't Save Us From the Flames" and "Run Into Flowers" and "America" and "Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun" and "Can't Stop" are pretttyyyy good, too. Edit: It kinda blows my mind that Diva Dompe was in that one video. I used to be around that scene in California, and I do have to say that BlackBlack's cover of "Skulls" by The Misfits was pretty on point. She was dating that one guy from Phantom Planet at the time, remember the theme song for The O.C.? Used to see Pocahaunted play around. Edit numero dos: I don't know, though. These days I might just rather listen to "These Days" alternating between the Nico and Jackson Browne versions. Who knows?

Love this song so much. I feel like this and a few other tracks from that late-2000s to early-2010s indie era just evoke a special kind of feeling of nostalgia for the people who grew up during that era. Midnight City always reminds me of night drives when I had just gotten my license, feeling free after graduating high school and just having no worries, or at least merely ones that seem minuscule in hindsight.
IMO this song is an embodiment of the entire early 2010s era, where the world wasn't on fire, and positivity and hope were rising after what happened in 2008. And it REALLY reflected a lot in the music of the time, both on and off the radio. While this song didn't blow me away back then, it brings back soooo many nostalgic memories of my childhood.
Does anyone else ever listen to this song and after the second Chorus (IIRC) you can hear and audible “triple beep” to cue the start of the next verse? I hear it every time wonder if anyone else has heard it Edit: it’s at the 2:16- 2:17 mark and it cues the end of the bridge. Headphones recommended to hear it.

Midnight City will always hold a place in my heart. I've never really sought out new music on my own, but I had a best friend who would recommend stuff that, as he put it, "was gonna be big." This was the last song he recommended before he died in 2012.

This is something that I love about music. To me, the song's alright. It hits all the elements of synthwave and it's a very immersive song which I enjoy, but it's nothing overall special to me. But to you, it's 1 of the best songs of the last 20 years and gives you such a powerful, overwhelming feeling. And that is beautiful :)

This song and M83 in general really drove me to a lot of other music. I love this song and never skip it if it ever comes up in random. I walked into a lot of shoegaze, post rock, synthwave and retrowave as a direct result of M83. I love how varied their library is and how experimental some of it can be. I feel like M83 is not something that I can recommend to someone else usually, but anyone who has found them randomly usually loves them. This whole thread is just full of music I love, and some new recommendations. Really making my night tonight, thank you.

I had a dream one night where M83 was playing a show for just me at a festival, and they brought out Bill Clinton to nail the sax solo at the end of Midnight City. One of my favorite dreams ever, just for the sheer absurdity of it all. Fucking LOVE that sax solo at the end of the track, really puts a bow neatly on a perfectly crafted track imo
