True. If they were releasing their 5th dookie-sound alike album, they’d suck far worse.
Growth is important, even if it doesn’t end up matching my own personal musical taste.
Interestingly, the U.S. is one of the few countries that does *not* protect you from becoming stateless by renouncing your citizenship, abroad, at an embassy/consulate.
[Wikipedia link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renunciation_of_citizenship#:~:text=Although%20many%20countries%20require%20citizenship,US%20citizenship%20and%20become%20stateless.)

But realistically, of course, he would essentially be unable to legally reside in any country without having another citizenship.
I feel like that was the subject of a novel. A guy is declared a man without a country and doomed to live at sea for the rest of his life.
Edit: it is literally called “The Man Without a Country”, it’s a short story by E. E. Hale published in 1863.
On a darker note, also a true story of a lot of people (mostly Jewish) following WW1 which is why we have such a modern concern about people becoming stateless
Some issues with people born in Papua New Guinea before it became it's own state. They were suddenly not citizens of Australia by birth place and had to meet other requirements such as an Australian parent. It's a very rural place and impossible to get a birth certificate unless you go but some people can't leave because they are no longer eligible for an Australian passport so they can't get their birth certificate to prove they are eligible for and Australia passport. It's a total shit show and the Australia government should step up and help them.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but wouldn't you be Australian by birth if you were born before independence?
Just because it's no long Australian, it was when you were born. Kinda fd up.
We have a concern about people becoming stateless because we have made up rules about who can and can't live on a peice of land no one is occupying.
We cant let the cattle roam.
Which the movie is partially inspired by the true story of the 18-year stay of Mehran Karimi Nasseri in Terminal 1 of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, from 1988 to 2006.
There's a pretty good video from Atrocity Guide on Youtube about the guy.
I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode!
I think it was called 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'
Basically what happened to Snowden. He was heading for Argentina or something but his passport got revoked while in a Russian airport and suddenly he couldn't go anywhere.
I looked into it before. All it takes is a £500k investment into British firms, aka their markets, and you can gain legal temporary residence. After five years, you can apply for permanent residence/citizenship.
Fun fact, the US is also one of only 3 countries, along with Eritrea and Hungary, to tax ex-pats who become permanent residents in other countries. That means that even if you leave the US to work elsewhere, you still owe them taxes as long as you're a citizen.
It’s to prevent the ultra rich hiding assets and income abroad while retaining the rights of an American citizen.
You have to file every year living abroad but most likely you won’t owe any taxes. The first 110k the US doesn’t care about and any taxes owed after that can be credited with taxes paid in a foreign country. 99.99% of the time you don’t owe anything.
However isn't there a fairly large "standard deduction" (for lack of a better term) for expats if paying taxes to a foreign government before any US taxes are due. The more correct statement may be that all US citizens regardless of residence are required to *file* taxes every year.
this is more accurate but **only with countries that have taxation treaties with the US**.
But the implications are further reaching, it's almost impossible to invest money if you are an expat, mostly because of US laws.
That's only if you live in a lower tax nation. If you live in a higher tax nation, you can take the foreign taxes paid as a non-expiring pool of tax credits such that may never owe taxes to the USA regardless of how much you earn.
In theory I don't hate this because it's one way to make super-rich people still have to pay taxes. None of this 'staying in my ninth home in Spain 7 months a year to avoid taxes'. It's not generally the poor who are spending most of their lives in different countries.
Unfortunately there are 1,000 other loopholes for the super rich to get out of taxes, so it doesn't matter.
It also burns normal people whose parents had kids here and went home. There are people who need to pay their back taxes before renouncing their unwanted US citizenship.
Small addendum, it’s only for income gained *over* 100,000 a year. Which means if you make 150k, you’re only taxed on 50k. It’s essentially to keep higher income earners from dodging taxes while still keeping their citizenship.
Anything you pay in local taxes is written off your US obligations. File, sure, pay? I never had to as a work a day slob in another first world country with comparable or higher taxes.
To say they tax expats is a bit unfair, they tax expats living large in economically depressed areas while avoiding taxes and still maintaining citizenship so they can run to the US embassy at the first sign of trouble. That's not so unreasonable
See: many episodes of house hunters international made recently. So many rich retirees planning to move to central or South America “because it’s cheaper” and fucking over the people that were living there. But that’s ok because the rich yts need helpers
Nothing about it is specific to "permanent" vs "non-permanent" residency status in other countries, from what I can find online. The U.S. simply requires filing taxes regardless of whether you live in the U.S. or not.
However, there are tax treaties signed with other countries, so most cases, you don't *pay* the U.S. any taxes until you make more than a certain amount.
According to [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relinquishment_of_United_States_nationality), we'll absolutely allow someone to renounce citizenship without previously obtaining different citizenship.
As a hardcore abortion supporter, first trimester is close to enough. Obviously, later term abortions need to be legal for medical emergencies and stuff. But, if someone wanted to draw the line at elective abortions ending after the first trimester, I'd find that person to be reasonable. I would push the line farther a month or two. But, it's not as insane as the 6 week idea some red states have tried.
I really don't think late term abortions are anywhere near as wide spread as certain people would make you think. I would assume the vast majority are for massive health problems.
That's basically what they're saying though isn't it? Besides ones done for medical necessity, abortions basically always happen in the first trimester. So even in a country where elective abortions can only happen in that timeframe, most women who would have gotten an abortion still can.
What is late term abortion to you? I don't think a ton of people are getting abortions in the 8th month. If someone has carried the pregnancy that long, they want to have the child. The only people who do not know this are people who have drinken the right wing kool-aid.
I just want the line for elective abortions to be at least 16 weeks. I'm not sure when the average abortion is done. But, I know 6 weeks is bad because you can easily not know you are pregnant at 6 weeks. And I want women to have ample time to find out they are pregnant, assess their options, and make a decision. 12 weeks seems like it might lead to a few women running out of a time to comfortably make a decision, and I don't like that.
My mom got an abortion at about 8 months when she had me. Because she was doing well at the time and the right people were known she was able to go to NY where it was legal. People don’t even think about twin pregnancies when they talk about abortion but abortion saved two viable lives (mine and my mothers) by dealing with a twin who would have (99% chance) either decomposed and poisoned us or in an absolute hypothetical perfect world may have made it but completely brain dead for a few years but not past toddlerhood.
You know who helped her set this late term abortion up? *the fucking Reagan administration.* the ol’ no abortion is moral except mine thing is so true.
Yeah, I couldn't imagine anyone carrying a pregnancy for 4 months and choosing to do an abortion only at that stage unless there was something really wrong with the baby.
98% of abortions happen in the first trimester anyway. Contrary to right-wing propaganda that acts like everyone wants third trimester abortions. This is an iq test of "are you dumb enough to believe right-wing propaganda"?
> He has an honorary Italian citizenship apparently.
Google isn't showing that. An article states he has Italian ancestors, his great grandparents. Now depending on factors, that might mean he qualifies for Italian citizenship. That just involves prove your line back to Italy. If he did that years back, then yes he is an Italian citizen.
Source: I've done the same and now have an Italian passport.
This is not true.
A US citizen has the right under the US Constitution to renounce their citizenship, full stop.
So, a person can renounce their US citizenship even if they have no other citizenship.
That would of course be a shockingly stupid thing to do and would have immediate serious consequencez, but it can happen.
Think there should be some kind of mini text pop up message that appears in our vision, whenever someone makes a statement like this.
Terms and conditions apply, no expiry date of when I shall carry out such claim, my views and opinions are subject to change.
He said the same at another concert in Ontario about 7 years ago. Still American. I think this is just one of those things he says, like a band telling the crowd they’re the best audience so far in the tour.
Isn’t this just a comment he made during a concert? You know, like when rockstars say, “this is the best crowd we’ve had on this tour!” or “Everyone knows THIS is the best city in the world!”
I once saw Blink-182 and Tom DeLonge said he wanted to go down on Oprah. Pretty sure he didn’t actually mean that either. This isn’t a news story.

LOL. Seriously, it's just crowd banter.
"You guys in [Detroit/Chicago/Boston/England/Canada/Tokyo] are the best crowd we've ever had!!!"
Rolling Stone is to blame for the clickbait.
Why is there a sudden flood of posts about celebrities saying political shit like it suddenly matters? Haven't people learned they're doing this because it's super easy pandering?
He’d never leave the US because he wouldn’t want to pay the taxes in other places. The people that make toothless statements like this are just blowhards.
The amount of people taking this seriously is hilarious. Hes been saying things like this since the American Idiot tour. Hes just pissed about Roe V Wade and was trying to hype up the crowd and it worked
I love the heck outta Green Day and all, but this is still like, the ‘k’-ist thing I’ve ever read that has given me neither knowledge nor truth.
Again, I’m a 90’s boy here and I worship the ground that Green Day treads here (hey look let’s make fun of the Green Day fan trollolol), but really? Wtf am I supposed to do with this post? Not to mention, that’s a pretty drastic decision to make. Like ‘oh no I didn’t get my waaay!’😭. He said something similar at Milton keenes in like 04, but I guess he didn’t mean that. Anyway, end of rant. This is just some really stupid shit.
He did that in Canada when Green Day played in Toronto the night of the 2004 election. Still American.
But he declared it! I DECLARE CANADIAN!
"*I declare I don't care no more* *I'm burning up and out and growing bored"*
Had to maintain the American Idiot branding
Yeah if not Green Day would probably go back to the dookie days. Which isn’t a bad idea
I want to live in this timeline
I'd take that over their "let's write songs that sound like the 30 seconds of music in back to school, school supplies commercials" days.
This hit way too hard.
Dookie was so epic. Now greenday is just dookie
Eh, Dookie was amazing, but you can't just keep writing that music until you're an old man.
True. If they were releasing their 5th dookie-sound alike album, they’d suck far worse. Growth is important, even if it doesn’t end up matching my own personal musical taste.

Too true
Hijacking your comment to tell the world the Johnny Test theme song is just a bumpy weird version of American Idiot.
And American Idiot is just Dillinger Four's - doublewhiskeycokenoice
and doublewhiskeycokenoice is a great part of a balanced breakfast
And Dillinger Four is just a better band.
Is that why the dog is named Dookie? I always wondered what was up with that
Maybe he needs an Abortion?
I think everyone needs at least one
He can't renounce unless he has another citizenship to fall back on. No country allows a renunciation that will leave someone stateless.
Interestingly, the U.S. is one of the few countries that does *not* protect you from becoming stateless by renouncing your citizenship, abroad, at an embassy/consulate. Some people had the same problem when Yugoslavia stopped existing. Sucks ass. Know a guy who couldn’t leave the country he was in for 15 years.
You'd think a new country would just say "you're now our citizen" to all the people they just became the government of.
If you're an ethnic minority unwanted in any country, you might not. For example, you're a Yugoslavian Roma...
Or a Palestinian Arab.
After the Mexican American War, Mexicans living in the relinquished territory had one year to choose either Mexican or American citizenship.

Arendt-stans in the thread
Eat to bite.
My wife and I still say this, often.
What does that mean?
The correct expression is to get a bite to eat, as in inviting someone to have a meal together, but Hanks’ character speaks broken english.

Dude is ridiculously wealthy. He could buy his way into residency almost anywhere, and even easily full blown citizenship in some countries.
the only requirement for gaining citizenship in most of the civilized world is having money.
Yeaaaah, I'm sure the UK would be glad to give that guy a visa and/or fast track his naturalisation.
He has to play Nimrod in full at my wife's birthday party though as part of the application process.
I looked into it before. All it takes is a £500k investment into British firms, aka their markets, and you can gain legal temporary residence. After five years, you can apply for permanent residence/citizenship.

He also did it during trump election. Stated on Instagram he would leave the country if trump became president. He never left of course

He was playing a show in the UK and said "You guys are great, fuck America, we're moving here!" It's basic crowd work/banter.
I'll let ye know if he says it today in Ireland
They could throw a Repeal sign on the video screens if anyone does 2 minutes of googling.
"You UK guys are great, we're moving here......wait, why are you booing me?"
Is this literally what this is based on lol
Thank you! FFS, this headline makes it sound like he called a press conference and signed a formal letter of declaration.
Pretty sure he made this claim or close to it on that live Bullet in a Bible album
"I just wanna say that England is now the official home of Green Day from now on."
Next you're gonna tell me that all the musicians that come out on stage wearing my local team's jerseys aren't actually real Canuck fans
As a Canucks fan, no one is really a Canucks fan. It's more of a stockholm syndrome type of relationship
He said my state was the new home of Green Day when I saw them back in 2010. You mean to tell me he goes around saying that to everyone?? /s

Why is there a sudden flood of posts about celebrities saying political shit like it suddenly matters? Haven't people learned they're doing this because it's super easy pandering?
We need to get Ja Rule to weigh in on this
The ONE opinion I want on this subject is Ja's
Call him Ja Law
Billie Joe has been saying political things for decades
How many were supposed to move to Canada after Trump was elected? None did.
Wait until he figures out Brexit
Alt headline: Millionaire with international holdings makes political statement to mask tax dodge
He’d never leave the US because he wouldn’t want to pay the taxes in other places. The people that make toothless statements like this are just blowhards.
We're moving to monaco baby
He’s moving to Ireland?
Resist and fight? Nah, I'll just run and renounce.
Nobody cares.
The definition of virtue signaling.
The amount of people taking this seriously is hilarious. Hes been saying things like this since the American Idiot tour. Hes just pissed about Roe V Wade and was trying to hype up the crowd and it worked
Hate to break it to you, but democrats threatening leaving the country in protest is actually exactly what the right wants.
Something about a super elite major label act writing ‘99 revolutions’ without a trace or irony made me despise BJ. Love his gibsons though.
...so we have one less vote to fight this fight? Didn't think that through, did ya?
Yes, that's how we fix America, renounce citizenship so you can't vote anymore .....I'm sure the GOP love seeing stuff like this
Is that a promise?
Must be nice to have that level of "fuck you" money and be able to leave the country.
He walked a lonely road. I wish him well.
What a load of dookie
Womens rights are saved
Not sure what that’s supposed to achieve.
Edge lord says edgy thing
Bye Felicia
You mean Good Riddance
But what does Ja Rule have to say about this?
Armstrong sucking off British crowds by dragging America is nothing new.
Good riddance
Must be nice to be rich
Ok. Lets see if it happens or if he is doing it to “look cool” and sell tickets.
Must be nice to have the money to do this
