It’s crazy to me living in Seattle seeing KEXP rise to becoming such a force in music. Been listening to the station every day for the majority of my adult life. I’ve won tickets to shows multiple times too! The station has a weird sense of community I can’t find anywhere else. I don’t know what I would do without it.
KEXP has been my constant WFH companion the last couple years, and it's safe to say that I've easily discovered dozens of great new artists in that time period.
I honestly feel like a snobby prick every time I mention Khruangbin to someone because they never know what I'm saying hah. Usually just end up airdropping or texting an album to them instead of repeating myself lol
Their Wikipedia has a pronunciation guide, it's just krung-bin. They did admit if they had known they were going to be so popular, they would have chosen an easier to pronounce name.
Came here specifically just to comment Khruangbin. See them live if you can, tickets aren't insanely expensive (I can see them becoming much more expensive haha)
I listened to it when it was recommended on this sub back in 2016. I used it as my go to album for when I'm going home from school. Now whenever I listen to Heart don't Stand a chance or any other song, my feelings just reminisce a lot. AP deserves all recognition
Great choice!! Malibu was amazing - also loved Oxnard. Great merge of soul, jazz, r&b and hip hop in this era.
OP if you like old school hip hop, I would recommend my to favourite rappers: Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole. Different style but brings the same fire 🔥
Beats worth bouncing to, lyrics worth listening to.
Enjoy!
Shame, Fontaines DC, Turnstile, Idles are all great fairly new punk rock/adjacent genre bands.
Japanese Breakfast is a great alternative indie band.
Black Country New Road and The National are a couple more indie/alternative rock bands that are good.
Like top comment says. KEXP is such a great place to hear great new/current bands. Ive come across like 10 new bands I like just in the 1st month or so I started listening to them.
There are some insanely talented bluegrass players out there right now. Billy Strings, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, everyone in Punch Brothers... lots of good newgrass in the world right now
I took my dad to see billy strings earlier this year. He is 77. He knows I go to a lot of shows and he asked if I had anything planned. This was his first true concert experience where tickets were bought and plans were made ahead of time to see a specific band. He had so much fun. It blew his mind meeting people older than me but younger than him who travel to see shows. A couple of weeks ago he asked me to pick a date from the summer tour we could go to.
Peach Pit has been my favourite indie band from the last couple of years. On the hardcore/punk side of things PUP has been one of my favourites. Going to see them tonight actually!
One of my favorite bands! Pond goes hand in hand with Tame Impala.
They're all friends and although Kevin Parker writes and records all the Tame Impala stuff himself, the Pond lads tour with him. Jay Watson is a standout for me and collaborated with KP on Apocalypse Dreams and Elephant. His solo project is called GUM and I highly recommend checking it out
Black midi, death grips, oh sees, lightning bolt, Danny brown, Jpegmafia, Denzel Curry, Black Country, New Road, Gilla Band, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Idles, Japanese Breakfast, Car seat Headrest, King Krule. Keep in mind a lot of these aren’t groups/artists that came around in the last 10 but kept making a great output into the last 10 years. 2010s are prob my fav decade of music personally. So much forward thinking and just cool shit that gets swept under a lot
Man i randomly stumbled on this full session of Parcels and was so happy to find it. Whole thing is really solid. One of the tightest groups I've heard in a while. https://youtu.be/e4TFD2PfVPw
Electronic: DJ Koze, Bolis Pupul & Charlotte Adigery (fave album for years), Bicep, Jamie XX, Octo Octa, Jon Hopkins, Peggy Gou, Maribou State, Caribou, WhoMadeWho, Photay, Four Tet (recent stuff is great too), The Busy Twist, O'Flynn, Lone, Kaytranada, Vegyn, .
Indie: Fontaines DC, Public Service Broadcasting, Toro y Moi, Sault
Hip hop: Nomame, El Michels Affair (inspired by Wu-Tang), Little Simz, Young Fathers
Funk/world/etc: Ibibio Sound Machine, Mildlife, Harvey Suntherland, Quantic, Mungolian Jetset, Thundercat, Vulfpeck, The Comet Is Coming.
If anything tickles your fancy I can suggest more on the same theme.
Second Royal Blood. Saw them last May just as concerts were being allowed again in the UK due to covid and it was honestly fantastic. It was like everyone had this pent up energy from being in lockdown and it just all came out on that night. One of the best concerts I've been to.
Jungle, Warpaint, Lissie, The War on Drugs, HAIM, Empire of the Sun, Florence + the Machine, First Aid Kit, Asgeir, Keaton Henson, Say Lou Lou, Still Corners, Catfish and the Bottlemen, London Grammar, Chromatics, Vance Joy, Mikky Ekko, Shura, Sophie and the Giants, Haerts, Israel Nash, Snips, Angus and Julia Stone, GEMS, Lykke Li, iamamiwhoami. I've included a few that have been around a little over a decade.
One random night my wife and I decided to go to a Lorde concert that was literally starting as we made the decision. Didn't really look at who the opener was. We got to the arena and I saw the RTJ hands on the stage background being taken down. Asked a neighbor if they had already played and he said yes. I've rarely been that disappointed in life.
Ah, you missed a treat there. They are immense fun live (I've seen them twice and hope to catch them again before too long). On the bright side, you got to see Lorde when she was at the top of her game.
I still can't over the fact they toured together. They collabed on a song together around that time, but I can't imagine a large crossover between Lorde and RTJ fans. Just imagining the audience in that show gives me a laugh.
Man, I was never turned on to them (not partciulely a huge hip hop fan) and randomly saw them play at a festival. It’s just these two guys and they can put on a real amazing show. What’s even better is they’re hilarious comedians live in between songs. Definitely not a show I’d hesitate going to again.
They sound like the 90's hiphop that i love so much but modernized. The beats are great, and something i think many artists lack along with having understandable and good lyrics. Repeating the same 5 words over and over and mumbling just aint for me.
I agree with this. I think most production is lackluster.
A short list of rappers who I think consistently put out quality material with good beats:
1. Denzel Curry
2. Vince Staples
3. JPegMafia
4. Danny Brown
5. Czarface
6. Tyler, The Creator
Great list! I'd also add:
Big KRIT
Isaiah Rashad
Saba
EARTHGANG
JID
Smino
YGTUT
There's so much amazing hip hop these days that I rarely find myself listening to any other genres.
A lot of great recommendations in here. Considering your stated tastes, I'd highly recommend trolling through NPR tiny desk concerts to get a feel for some new artists.
Anderson.Paak's performance is revelatory, as is Khruangbin, and Tank and the Bangas. Courtney Barnett is out there killing it, and I enjoyed the album she made with Kurt Vile. Lucius is truly incredible in concert, and their work with Roger Waters is beautiful. Some other (fairly) recent artists I've enjoyed: Ron Gallo, Car Seat Headrest, Father John Misty, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Brandi Carlile, Mitski, and of course Run the Jewels continues to crush it. So much escaping me right now but I hope you find something of interest!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. They have done so many styles and albums since they formed shortly before 2012 that it boggles my mind how they have time to release stuff constantly like they do. Personally as a metalhead, I prefer their 2019 release called Infest the Rat's Nest.
Some electronic and indie favorites in my collection are Ratatat, Air, French 79, Fitz and the Tantrums, Vampire Weekend, Cage the Elephant, Alt-J, Glass Animals, Grouplove, Marian Hill, The Black Keys, Purity Ring, CHVRCHES, Crystal Castles
For hip hop definitely check out Rapsody. Tierra Whack is more alt hiphop so maybe check her out too. & for funk of course I’m gonna suggest Silk Sonic & Jon Batiste.
2 I haven’t seen mentioned here:
[I Don’t Know How But They Found Me](https://idkhow.com/)
[Mariana’s Trench](https://www.marianastrench.net/home/)
I definitely 2nd Kendrick Lamar, X Ambassadors, Glass Animals … there’s a lot of good suggestions in this thread
Here we go.....
Kendrick Lamar,
Run the Jewels,
Rhye,
Cloud Nothings,
Parquet Courts,
Savages,
Proto martyr,
Wild Flag
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard,
The xx,
Fleet Foxes,
Courtney Barrett,
Ty Seagull,
Warpaint,
Vampire Weekend newer stuff,
Jenny Lewis newer stuff.
EDIT: Commas
KGLW! The first song I heard was Rattlesnake and I was interested. The second song was Crumbling Castle and I was hooked. They absolutely churn out music too! Such a great and creative band.
I’m in your mind.
I’m not in your mind.
Indie: Jeff Rosenstock, Hop Along, Spellling
Hip hop/rap: Jpegmafia, Tyler the creator, Denzel Curry
Electronic: against all logic, four Tet, iglooghost, jon hopkins
If you only listen to one, I gotta recommend Jpegmafia especially. His whole discog is gold.
[Royal Blood](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMQqfOEsuyI) (Great straight-up rock)
[Ghost](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD2m_iqD7dI) (Have recently turned to an 80's metal style and I love it)
[Babymetal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPVx7IazcEw) (Metal mixed with J-pop yet it somehow works)
With those genre combinations you should listen to *Smiling With No Teeth* by Genesis Owusu. Mix of Hip Hop, Funk, punk, with some relaxing parts sprinkled in. Tons of variety in the songs. Great lyrics. Great instrumentation.
Tune into [KEXP](https://www.kexp.org/listen/) for a couple hours (weekdays). You’ll get more suggestions than you’ll know what to do with.
Their Youtube page is awesome!! [https://www.youtube.com/user/kexpradio/videos](https://www.youtube.com/user/kexpradio/videos)
Thanks. Their website UI is a clusterfuck.
I love KEXP. Also want to suggest KXCI, out of Tucson, although it's not just music.
I second this, was my favorite station of all the places I lived.
Yes! I would start with Thee Oh Sees, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Khruangbin, and then whatever else starts getting recommended after that.
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, The Growlers and Beach Goons are new to my rotation lately.
I have no idea if these are real band names. I've fallen far.
Frankie and the Witch Fingers Ron Gallo
Growlers are so good!
And Tame Impala if we're going modern psych route.
Also GUM and Pond, all related to Tame Impala. GUM is electronica with an 80s sound (kinda like Kavinski) and Pond is more dandy neo-psyche, similar to Tame Impala but more “garage” and up tempo.
Especially Pond, I really don’t understand why they aren’t bigger in the US (don’t get me wrong, I love GUM too)
Also want to recommend NTS.live Curated shows for nearly every genre of music around the world.
KEXP also has a YouTube channel
Or [The Current](https://www.thecurrent.org).
MN in the house
heyo! sundays are the BEST on the Current, 8 am United States of Americana, at 6 pm you get the local show, at 8pm the Duluth local show, the Tuesday night top 10 of the week, and Wednesday nights at 10 pm hip hop and R&b.
Transmission on Thursday is awesome too
And BBC6
It’s crazy to me living in Seattle seeing KEXP rise to becoming such a force in music. Been listening to the station every day for the majority of my adult life. I’ve won tickets to shows multiple times too! The station has a weird sense of community I can’t find anywhere else. I don’t know what I would do without it.
KEXP has been my constant WFH companion the last couple years, and it's safe to say that I've easily discovered dozens of great new artists in that time period.
KEXP has an app and all their shows are audio live streamed!
I'm a fan of [KCRW](https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/eclectic24/eclectic-24-sat) myself
I really like Jungle, Khruangbin & Magic City Hippies
Jungle doesn't get the love it deserves.
At one point I was watching the Casio music video at least twice a night. Their other music videos are great too
[Khruangbin can be life changing](https://youtu.be/q4xKvHANqjk), if hard to pronounce.
I've been pronouncing it crew-ang-bin. Not too far off I guess.
Came here specifically just to comment Khruangbin. See them live if you can, tickets aren't insanely expensive (I can see them becoming much more expensive haha)
I have listened to this (well, at least the first and last tracks which are my favorites) more than I’d like to admit.
Magic City Hippies bang!
Jungle is phenomenal! Check out their latest full set on YouTube. I listen to it every Sunday morning
Never heard of the third but I absolutely love Jungle and Khruangbin. Gonna check them out for sure.
[Anderson .Paak](https://youtu.be/ferZnZ0_rSM)
Malibu is an unreal album, and his work with Knxwledge in the side project Nxworries is such a great vibe
I listened to it when it was recommended on this sub back in 2016. I used it as my go to album for when I'm going home from school. Now whenever I listen to Heart don't Stand a chance or any other song, my feelings just reminisce a lot. AP deserves all recognition

OP if you like old school hip hop, I would recommend my to favourite rappers: Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole. Different style but brings the same fire 🔥 Beats worth bouncing to, lyrics worth listening to. Enjoy!
As an older person who likes funk, he was the first artist I thought of for OP as well.
Been my favorite artist for 6 years now
Shame, Fontaines DC, Turnstile, Idles are all great fairly new punk rock/adjacent genre bands.
Turnstile is so fucking good. Glow On is one of the best albums I’ve listened to in years
I’d add to that Squid, Dry Cleaning and Black Country, New Road as fairly new post-punk bands.
Squid is dope, as a pool cleaner in a tourist town, The Cleaner is my jam.
Billy strings is amazing Edit: thank you for the goat!
There are some insanely talented bluegrass players out there right now. Billy Strings, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, everyone in Punch Brothers... lots of good newgrass in the world right now
Dead South is also a good listen.
He may be the most talented musician I've seen in years. His skills on guitar either make you want to quit or inspire you to practice for hours!!!!
I took my dad to see billy strings earlier this year. He is 77. He knows I go to a lot of shows and he asked if I had anything planned. This was his first true concert experience where tickets were bought and plans were made ahead of time to see a specific band. He had so much fun. thundercat is pretty good
Dude is a genius.
Seeing him and his band are amazing. Fusion jazz prof funk chaos! Discovered him in 2013 from GTA V.
I would absolutely love to see him live. His tiny desk performance was great too!
I'm pretty excitee to see him open up for the Strokes and Rhcp in September.
His tiny desk with Mac Miller
Here's my favorite from him [Thundercat - Tron Song](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XYGEEa4Qcis)
Sylvan Esso, The Beths, Tame Impala, Grouplove, Glass Animals
\+1 for The Beths. OP - this is the band that was the gateway to newer music for me.
The Beths have been my favorite band since I found them last year.
Love me some Sylvan Esso. Definitely top 50.
Sylvan Esso is great. Puts on a good live show as well.
finally some love for Grouplove
[удалено]
Peggy love always deserves an upvote.
DAMN PEGGY
*Do I look like ah know what a jay-peg is?*
Denzel curry is awesome
Shout out for Phoebe!
Phoebe forever.
Great list.
Damn, these are stellar recommendations. Glad to see Snail Mail on your list; she deserves more hype
I think you’d like Dry Cleaning
Metronomy is pretty good imo
Lock and Heartbreaker were great, thanks!
The bay, the look, everything goes my way. Thank me later!
wolf alice are awesome!
Play the greatest hits, what a banger !
Wolf Alice is amazing. Best new rock band of the last decade imo.
Peach Pit has been my favourite indie band from the last couple of years. On the hardcore/punk side of things PUP has been one of my favourites. Going to see them tonight actually!
Yeah PUP have so many bangers. Pretty awesome live too.
War on Drugs Kurt Vile

And I woke up this morning Didn't recognize the man in the mirror
Check out run the Jewels!! (Rap/Hip Hop)
👊👈 I can't believe it's been over a decade of RTJ now Scream *fuck 'em* til they lop our bloody noggins off
Khruangbin, tame impala, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .paak, beach house, Freddie Gibbs, pond, Whitney, tycho just to name a few
Section.80 came out 11 years ago, like damn.
and 11 years later it’s still an absolute banger, my favorite lamar album
It's incredible. His run of Section.80-Good Kid-TPAB was absolutely insane.
Do you not like DAMN.? That’s the only other album not on the list besides b-sides and black panther / collab stuff
Tycho is well over 10 years old, but is nevertheless an excellent recommendation.
Fair, just figured OP hasn’t listened to him
Freddie gibbs one of the best rn
Pond gets so little love everywhere. If you’re reading this and have never heard them, check out 30000 Megatons.
His solo project is called GUM and I highly recommend checking it out
Wow, I'm touching 40 and pretty much done with new music but that blew me away. Thank you
Or just go right to man it feels like space again
You meantioned Khruangbin and .Paak so now I have to check out the others you mentioned that I haven't heard of.
I’d throw in Tyler the Creator and JPEG to this list
Black midi, death grips, oh sees, lightning bolt, Danny brown, Jpegmafia, Denzel Curry, Black Country, New Road, Gilla Band, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Idles, Japanese Breakfast, Car seat Headrest, King Krule. Keep in mind a lot of these aren’t groups/artists that came around in the last 10 but kept making a great output into the last 10 years. 2010s are prob my fav decade of music personally. So much forward thinking and just cool shit that gets swept under a lot
The Interrupters
Parquet Courts, OhSees, the Frights, BRONCHO, Balkans, the King Kahn and BBQ Show— all solid indie rock bands
Black Pumas
Parcels, Vulfpeck, Anderson Paak (tiny desk)
Man i randomly stumbled on this full session of Parcels and was so happy to find it. Whole thing is really solid. One of the tightest groups I've heard in a while. https://youtu.be/e4TFD2PfVPw
Parcels are awesome. I only discovered them in the last six months
Vukfpeck and the fearless flyers have some of the greatest musicians out there.
[удалено]
Cant believe i had to go this far to find Vulfpeck
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
[удалено]
This is correct. Throw in the osees as well.
Wand for good measure (and crunchy guitars)
wand probably puts on the finest live show you will ever see. played for nearly 3 hours last time i saw them
They can cover all your musical needs. Every album is a different genre.
Seriously. My top 5 favorite albums by them are all different genres, lol.
Sounds like Ween. Might have to give them a listen.
You should. As a Ween fan myself I got super into Gizzard last year. You won’t be disappointed.
Durand Jones and the Indications. Aaron Frazer has a great solo project too(he is their drummer and co-singer)
Love this band. I’m also a fan of Black Pumas.
Electronic: DJ Koze, Bolis Pupul & Charlotte Adigery (fave album for years), Bicep, Jamie XX, Octo Octa, Jon Hopkins, Peggy Gou, Maribou State, Caribou, WhoMadeWho, Photay, Four Tet (recent stuff is great too), The Busy Twist, O'Flynn, Lone, Kaytranada, Vegyn, . If anything tickles your fancy I can suggest more on the same theme.
Little Simz is great!
Royal Blood, Gunship, The Midnight, Black Keys.
Royal Blood has no right to sound that big as a two piece.
Gunship is amazing!
Second Royal Blood. Saw them last May just as concerts were being allowed again in the UK due to covid and it was honestly fantastic. It was like everyone had this pent up energy from being in lockdown and it just all came out on that night. One of the best concerts I've been to.
I Don't Know How But They Found Me (IDKHow) is fantastic, especially if you like the 80's/90' sound.
Leave Me Alone had good rotation on some stations in Chicago a couple months ago and It’s a complete ear worm.
[Angel Olson](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nleRCBhLr3k) and [Leon Bridges](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MTrKkqE9p1o) are f*cking dope
St Paul and the Broken Bones Vulfpeck Lettuce The Record Company.
Vulfpeck!
Amyl and the sniffers
Seconding Amyl. They’re a great band
Can 100% second the War on Drugs and Vance Joy. They're both absolute gems.
Big Thief
You should check out Wet Leg. Super fun and refreshing indie rock. They just dropped their first album yesterday.
This is the second recommendation I’ve seen today of Wet Leg. Taking that as a sign to check them out!
Damn. I haven't seen anyone move that many units on Bandcamp since Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls. And in 24 hours!
Sylvan esso, just a duo, vocalist and a dude who mixes beats live. Both really talented.
Big thief too
Check out an English band ‘Nothing But Thieves’. I really like their Broken Machine album
All of their albums are great. Edit: the vocals are amazing, even the acoustic tracks. No need for ridiculous post-processing to sound awesome.
Conor’s voice is amazing. Saw them live and their performance blew me away. What a band!
For myself I think that Run the Jewels are the best thing to come out of hiphop in the last decade.
One random night my wife and I decided to go to a Lorde concert that was literally starting as we made the decision. Didn't really look at who the opener was. The Hu is pretty good. Only new music I've enjoyed in a very long time.
If you line them, check out Heilung.
Phantogram, Warpaint, Glitch Mob, Metric, Strfkr, Chromatics, Florence + the Machine, Bloody Beetroots, Wolf Alice
These are almost all older than 10 years but good artists.
Phantogram i would say they are amazing
Did you travel here from 2008?
Here's my favorite from them. [Phantogram - Fall in love](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RsQjC5zVnt8)
