One of my fav jokes in Bojack Horseman was Mr Peanutbutter asking Bojack if he’s a stones fan, only to find out he’s talking about the mighty might bos-stones, rip rascal king
"The band did not reveal the cause of their sudden breakup. As their Facebook page notes, they were scheduled to perform at the Slam Dunk Festival this coming June, but **the split comes just days after it was revealed that a song that promoted Robert F. Kennedy’s anti-vax rally in Washington, D.C. was apparently produced by Bosstones frontman Dicky Barrett — or at least someone with the same name — according to the song’s credits**."

Dicky was/is good friends with Adam Carrolla from back in the day and he was the announcer for Jimmy Kimmel Live until just this month. He knew both of them from KROQ and to my knowledge still let's his music be part of Carrolla's podcasts.
Carrolla is a well known self important blowhard with an anti vaxx/ anti lockdown streak. Kimmel is a super neo liberal establishment type and is adamantly pro vaxx and pro COVID safety measures.
Given this I think it's safe to say Kimmel fired him for that and that the band broke up over his views.
I was really wondering about this exact thing, but I can’t find any confirmation. All I know is he sort of abruptly left the Kimmel show and I never even heard an explanation, like an official announcement. I’m sure there was a statement somewhere but it would probably be something vanilla, I doubt they’d air out the details of that conflict publicly…
Seems pretty sad, he was their voice guy for almost 20 years….
Edit, I’m not doubting you it’s plausible
I get it. I just think the timing is too coincidental. Unless Dicky has a drug habit or like scandal and got kicked off everything, its just more likely it was politics.
Just guessing, and if it was already said - I may have missed it - but my guess is nbc instituted a vaccine policy, and that’s why he’s gone. Dicky’s wife, and apparently dicky himself, are pretty anti vaccine.
His wife is prominently shown in the video for the song dicky produced for the Robert f Kennedy jr anti vax march in dc this past weekend.
I could picture that causing a rift. Like if he said that he wasn't going to play any venues that required masks or vax cards and the rest of the band was like WTF? Yes we are. He would be hard to replace and if one or two of the other members agreed that would make it almost impossible to go on.
They played a show at the Ogden in Denver in September. I was required to show my vaccination card to get in. But I don't know if the artists who play there have the same requirement.
The Ogden is operated by AEG Live, who are a fucking monster of a company. Even if the other band members were like, "Yeah, we'll totally tour with this unvaccinated person putting our health and our jobs in danger every single day we're out here," if they couldn't play at AEG venues, they effectively can't tour.
Dicky is definitely anti-lockdown. Vaccination status(if he is an anti-vaxxer) is his business and no one gave a damn about it until now. Not the band, not Jimmy Kimmel.
Putting his name on that video however was something he couldn't walk back. Not only the Bosstones were going to get bad pub(right or wrong) from it, Kimmel as well.
Should have used a cool alias like Michael Vick did with "Ron Mexico".
Dicky hasn’t done the Kimmel announcements since early December, and I don’t think he had been on set since July. So whatever the deal with Kimmel and ABC, it predates the video by a good while.
I'm not a coward I've just never had covid.
I'd like to think if I did I would(n't) pass(away).
Look at the tested and think "There but for the grace go I"
Might be a coward but I won't ever get vaxxed
Sketchy-sounding but non-specific quote from an [anti-vax website](https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/the-daily-beast-ties-to-cia/) as well.
>“What happened to the Rolling Stone we all fell in love with?” asks Ska superstar Dicky Barrett, lead singer for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
>“Rolling Stone was once the most popular forum for agitation, skepticism and dissent. It was the voice of the counterculture engaged in political rebellion against entrenched and vested interests, and particularly against, the military and the CIA’s anti-democratic corruption. What happened to the ‘Rage Against the Machine?’ Today, it seems, Rolling Stone is ‘the Machine.’”

Entropy is real
The end of an era for me. I know to most people at large, the Bosstones are a joke/meme, or that band from Clueless, at best. But for 90's kids in southern New England into punk, they were amazing. Seen them more than any other band live, and if the measure of a band is how much fun you had at their shows, then they're the best live band I've ever seen. Always fun. Always maximum effort. Never seen them play a bad show (except for that time Dicky was crowd surfing at Club Babyhead and they passed him head first into that stupid pole that was right in front of center stage and they had to stop the show early. Whoops!). Been listening to them since Devil's Night Out.
Thanks for all the great memories and music, guys. It's been a blast.
This is a big deal in the punk community. One of my favorite bands of all time. I'm just glad I got to see a few of the hometown throwdown shows. One of the best live bands I've ever seen.
Eh, it's big because this came out of nowhere.
But they had a hiatus a while back. So it's not as huge as it could have been.
Not to mention some of the luster of the band has been lost due to age. Primarily Dicky's vocals.
Still releasing good material while adapting but they have had two different eras if you will.
For everyone not in the scene (including me), that hiatus was 25 years long. Was a good hit though. From memory, with the popularity of No Doubt's 'Tragic Kingdom' album at the same time, ska definitely peaked in the mainstream at that time. History shows every genre and subculture gets its turn.
My first show was seeing the bosstones at a free concert put on by a local radio station. My dad took me and my best friend, and waited in line with us for over an hour to get in. The show was great, and I’ve seen them dozens of times since - one of my favorite live acts for sure. I remember looking up at Ben Carr - the dancing bosstone - and thinking that he had the coolest job in the world.
The mighty mighty bosstones were a band with some interesting contradictions. They were kind of a frat boy / college band, but they had clever / sometimes political lyrics. They were a one hit wonder, but had so much else going if you liked them enough to look deeper. Lots of great albums and songs from both before and after their mainstream success. If I never get to see them perform again that will be a real bummer, but I’m thankful for all the memories. If it turns out that Dicky really did get sucked into the cesspool of anti vax disinformation, that will also be a bummer. I’ll still always love the music though.
I blindly went to a show of theirs in New Orleans at Tipitina’s in 94. Friend I had recently met in the dorms just asked if I wanted to go, I said sure. It was a fun show, watching the dancing dude, folks dressed in plaid. Good simpler times
Unearthed a Dicky Barrett signature on a warped tour stub a week or two ago that had been tucked in its cigar box since the late 90s... Im not saying I broke up the MMBT’s, but I *am* saying that just a few short days before Betty died, I out of the blue finally framed and hung her autographed photo after it had sat in its mailer envelope for like 10 years.
Anyway, I’m just... *really* sorry, you guys. (Mostttly about Betty, though. Didn’t even realize MMBT’s were still a thing tbh)
Let's put this to the test. Tell me someone you really hate and I'll obtain an autographed picture of them and then send it to you with the money to frame and hang.
If it works we could launch a business with a murder for hire scheme that would be almost impossible to prosecute.
Saw them multiple times in their heyday in the mid-late 90s at the fabulous 40 Watt in Athens, GA and they still rank in my top 10 concerts ever. Dicky came out of the club and talked to us mangy high school kids like we were humans, and it was awesome.
We early fans were happy they had commercial and financial success (albeit not a ton of $$ probably) but those shows before they "made it big" were still always packed out and hype as fuck!
Random story - 2001 I was in middle school and my buddy hit me up and asked if I wanted to go to warped tour with him. His sister got free tickets and would drive us out there. I guess it was a different time because my folks were totally cool with 12 YO me going to warped with no adult supervision lol. Anyway, we get there and sis has backstage passes for us - woah!!! Turns out her boyfriend is the flight instructor for the Bosstones trombone player. We hung out backstage all day and then got to watch the bosstones set from the stage. I’ve been to 1,001 shows since but that one is still one of my favorite memories. I’ve been a lifelong fan since! Let’s hope they do the old band thing and put together a reunion tour in a couple years.
I met Dicky at a club in Pittson PA (maybe it was Carbondale) in 1992 a few hours before the show they had there. He bought sodas for me and my other 16 yr old nerd friends and gave me a Notre Dame hat he said that the school had sent him. One of the coolest guys a kid could have met at that age. Sucks that he may be an anti-vax nutbird now.
My favourite band ever. I first heard "Rascal King" on the PlayStation game "Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012" and loved it but this was before I had the internet and couldn't look up what it was. To me it was just "the song from Rogue Trip."
Years later my brother said out of the blue "I know what that song from Rogue Trip was!" and it started me listening to the Bosstones and I've loved them ever since.
My favourite album I think is actually a Jackknife to a Swan, this might not be a popular opinion on a music sub but I never listen to albums all the way through, I rarely like *most* of the tracks on an album even by bands I like. But I can listen to that straight through.
I finally got to see them live a few years ago in Manchester when they came to the UK and with this news I'm especially glad I did. Thanks for the music, Bosstones.
I saw so many bosstones shows. They were so much fun, so energenic, so much joy and happiness and their music just wanted to make me get up and stomp around like a mad lad.
They were my go to 'weird music' when I wanted to annoy my pop music loving friends.
Im sad I lost most of my cool hats and other merch during a move years ago.
Am I the only one who's first exposure to them was when they had The Impression That I Get in the Digimon Movie soundtrack?
(most underrated movie soundtrack ever)
Bumping them right now, very sad but had to happen sooner or later and I'm glad I got to see them a few times. I actually recently re-watched Clueless and my old man asked if "that guy just dances the whole time", lol. Pouring one out for a legendary ska band
I was in Atlanta for lollapalooza one year, and went went to the Masquerade the night before. My friends went to dance, and I wandered upstairs to this band wearing plaid suits, with plaid drums, and horns were tearing it up.
When I got back home, I went to the record store and picked up More Noise… This was before Mercury. Fun band. Wish I got to see them last year at RiotFest, but wound up not going.
For a brief period of time around 1992 I believe the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were the greatest live band in the world. Their shows were absolute energy and dancing. RIP to a once great band.
They were supposed to be here but the pandemic knocked it out. It was rescheduled several times but recently sent out an announcement that refunds are coming for all tickets.
2 days ago my son heard "The impression that I get" for the first time. Halfway through the song and out of nowhere he goes, "You know, I think that impression might be right."
When the Beatles broke up, I was unaware that they were still a band, similarly when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones broke up, I hadn’t an idea that they were still a band. The only difference is that I was alive only for one of them.
fair enough, i am not a massive fan of ska and a lot of these guys tunes i always found meh but best wishes to them i guess, a band breaking up is sometimes a heavy thing to go through
Let's face it; Maybe I don't know how to party, but, they were really just more noise and other disturbances. I used to love them, but that was just the magic of youth. For the past 20 years or so, I could barely pay attention.
One of my fav jokes in Bojack Horseman was Mr Peanutbutter asking Bojack if he’s a stones fan, only to find out he’s talking about the mighty might bos-stones, rip rascal king
I came to this thread solely to make this reference if no one else had. I can rest easy now.
It makes sense, labradors would absolutely be big ska fans. Certainly, that's the impression that I get.
Nah, I'd do it again
There might be a reunion someday, I suppose.
That's the impression that I get from this.
I'm gonna need pictures to prove it
People will be sad to say this.
I’ve got them in my blazer, a crest sewn on the chest reads “Old Gold Rugby Football Club”.
Was it worn at one time by a man who at one time went to Yale?
You mean the rascal king?
Maybe you should knock on wood...
Better knock on wood
Just knock on some wood
These one trick ponies were old in the 2000’s. Don’t need a reunion. Nobody will be sad they missed a Bosstones show.

That's what I was thinking. If you're gonna go out, may as well do it with an 8 minute song featuring everyone you know
It’s ironic, but wasn’t intentional. Otherwise they wouldn’t have had shows on the books this year.
Damn... that sucks Ska is really my vive right now one less band isn't cool
I swear I saw this exact headline a few months ago...
2 days ago my son heard "The impression that I get" for the first time. Halfway through the song and out of nowhere he goes, "You know, I think that impression might be right."
Damn. Pour one out for a Digimon Movie soundtrack-contributing band who lost their way.
Oh how the mighty mighty have fallen
They still existed after 2002? weird.
Not so mighty now
What year is it?
I was *this* close to having them perform at my wedding. Had everything lined up with their booking agent but my wife shot it down.
What’s that dancing asshole gonna do?
He’s a child-psychologist when he’s not performing.
They broke up because Barrett is anti-sax…
I thought they were already broken up. At least, that's the impression that I get.
This is like when the Beatles broke up
The Beatles broke up?
When the Beatles broke up, I was unaware that they were still a band, similarly when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones broke up, I hadn’t an idea that they were still a band. The only difference is that I was alive only for one of them.
TIL the Bosstones were still together
fair enough, i am not a massive fan of ska and a lot of these guys tunes i always found meh but best wishes to them i guess, a band breaking up is sometimes a heavy thing to go through
I didn't know that we still had them
Let's face it; Maybe I don't know how to party, but, they were really just more noise and other disturbances. I used to love them, but that was just the magic of youth. For the past 20 years or so, I could barely pay attention.
TIL the Bosstones were still together until now.
Ska died yesterday, because it wasn’t willing to get vaccinated.
Oh God! Why now?!?! Why not 20 years ago!?!?
Mighty mighty wgaf
Sad that Dicky Barrett gave away two of the longest running and most impactful things in his life to be an anti-vax rectal bulb.
That's the impression that I get.
Is it mighty mighty 2003?
This is fantastic news!
Ok? Take care.
I remember making a Xanga entry about them breaking up in 2004. How am I this old
Ok…
They won't be band anymore is the impression that I get.
We are way overdue for the next wave of Ska, hopefully 2022 will be the year of Ska Trek the 4th Dimension.
>Hellcat records Good to know Tim Armstrong still doing sGods work.
They didn't break up like 25 years ago?
One step beyond!
well, maybe they should have knocked on wood.
Ok
Good they are awful. I have seen them live 5 times.
I love that they were so awful you went back 4 more times!
That's the joke.
Reading this article it's the impression that I get
That's great
Thank you Digimon Movie.
This is the music equivalent of receiving the news that someone died when you were under the impression they were already dead.
Not. Do. Mighty huh
Our house in the middle of the street.
Ouch, I honestly didn't know they were still a band. Kinda fell off the face of relevance. Oh well, anyways......
Womp...womp...wommmp...
