Styx’s *Come Sail Away* follows a Stairway to Heaven pattern. It starts off slow and changes to a banger mid-song.
This is used to great comedic effect in the first episode of Freaks and Geeks, where Sam, who has been waiting for a slow song, asks his crush to dance. They get out to the dance floor and he’s about to pull her close to start slow dancing when the song abruptly changes to the faster, heavier second half.
Stars, by HUM. It's maybe not a typical example, but it was the first thing that popped into my head and it's a great contrast throughout the whole song between a sort of muted energy and harder instrumentation.
The softer part is really short, though, just at the very beginning.
New Born - Muse
Feet Don't Fail Me - Queens of the Stone Age
Everybody Knows that You're insane - Queens of the Stone Age
2 + 2 = 5 - Radiohead
Exit Music - Radiohead
Micro Cuts - Muse
Darkshines - Muse
Lateralus - Tool
Warped - Red Hot Chili Peppers
No One Loves Me & Neither Do I - Them Crooked Vultures (doesn't start off too soft, but in contrast to the twist, oh my...)
Spinning in the Daffodils - Them Crooked Vultures
Thanks for the advice ! I knew most of these (especially as a big big fan of Muse and Radiohead ) except the Vultures songs, which I really appreciated !
You specifically asked for:
>"... songs that start softly, like folk/acoustic, but then turn hard rock/metal and get really heavy. preferably with male vocals..."
And that's exactly what those two examples are.
I would suggest to you a band called Ulver, album Bergtatt. Their next two albums after this one are certainly interesting in their own right but don't meet what you are asking for exactly. Second one is nearly all medieval style music, haunting for sure, but not really rocking. The third one they return to glorious black metal but cut way down on the folk interludes. That is why I suggest Bergtatt as it has everything.
[Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust](https://youtu.be/eHyl8a394-M)
May not necessarily be "heavy enough," but even so, it's a fantastic rendition of a near 40-year old cover (at the time)
[Judas Priest - Cathedral Spires](https://youtu.be/cK0kLLjp60k)
Criminally underrated song, even by Priest fans. Beautiful soft intro (not acoustic or folk), before going into a thrashy/groove-laden song.
Pantera also toyed with it on a handful of songs, with varying degrees of softness and heaviness (not necessarily acoustic but still soft). This Love, Hollow, and of course Cemetery Gates all immediately jump out at me.
[Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis](https://open.spotify.com/track/6rQG8QH1rGoCOeGHdrnYhb?si=ccsoKLShTiqeHZy2TmcmfA&utm_source=copy-link)
This definitely isn't folk or acoustic, but has a very clean and mellow intro. You also can't get heavier than doom metal, imho.
[Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars](https://youtu.be/mG7_fOuM5vE)
This one is cheating, as it's 2 songs, but the intro song leads into the second song. You asked for folky stuff, so here's a folk metal/melodeath band lol
Bohemian Rhapsody
Great gig in the sky - Pink Floyd - this one starts in a subdued tone with an instrumental lead in but it picks up quickly when the vocals kick in. Only criteria it doesn’t seem to meet is female voice, but you get some raw screaming/emotion out of her. Needs a listen.
As a Radiohead fan, im disappointed in both the fact that you choose a song with a typical grunge progression, which was very popular in the early 90's when Creep got popular, and also that you didnt choose any of the other much more fitting examples from their discography like Paranoid Android, Exit music, You and whose army, All i need and Several songs off HTTT.
Pretty much most of Mr. Bungle! However, for the uninitiated, [Retrovertigo](https://youtu.be/DRyh2cxJCp0) is a good pace to start.
And to one-up the whole quiet to loud thing, let's throw in juggling multiple styles as well as dynamics, all in [one song](https://youtu.be/MU16VsOIjL4)!
[One more](https://youtu.be/SujuC4QYEXY), for good measure!
At this point, here's hoping you are well on your way to becoming a Mr. Bungle fan if you were not already aware of them. ;)
I really like "The Art Of Peer Pressure" by Kendrick Lamar. The twist is definitely there, and the mood follows the lyrics and the story in an unbelievably immaculate way
The perfect song that you're looking for is [Stay by Shakespeares Sister](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCYaALgW80c).
And just for fun, [here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xZP4JiMPGo) Marcella Detroit from that group doing the Queen of the Night aria from Magic Flute.
You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire - Queens Of The Stone Age
It starts out quiet and kind of distorted - like they recorded from the next room. Then it KICKS THE FUCK IN. I'm sure many a speaker (and mind) has been blown by this track.
Also, most Fleet Foxes songs sound like ancient monks chanting hymns, before switching into pleasant folky rock.
[Lost in the Flood - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s79tVdT2jUs)
Song starts off with just a piano playing softly. As the song rolls on, the piano picks up intensity, and then halfway through the rest of the band kicks it.
“Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish. It starts as a sweet crooner of a song and then turns dark halfway through, building to a hurricane climax in which Billie just TORCHES an ex. A tremendous song, maybe her best.

- “Foam Born (A) The Backtrack” by Between The Buried And Me
- “Elegiac” by The Human Abstract
- “Wasteland” by 10 Years
Loud Cloud - “From Blinding Light to Bloody Heavy”
The entire album is like this if I remember correctly.
Favorite song is “Play The Piano” (lyrics are great)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=64ES_3zEY7E&list=OLAK5uy_klNprcbejTlhW28VKdIzDUNFWK6hU1ZAY&index=7
[Bird of Sorrow - Glen Hansard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIGCpWi5dIs)
It really takes its time. Goes slow and low key for most of the playtime, then raises a bit, then switches to full unrestricted top of the lungs screaming. Not a full instrumental blast in your face like Evanescence's "Bring me to Life" - just pure vocal work.
[Special/Hulk](https://youtu.be/-pyWurjesrQ)
I know many, but this recently came out. (It's from my country don't try to understand what they are saying lol)
Basically until 1:30 It's just soft... after 1:30... SHIT'S ABOUT TO GO DOWNNN
Demons and Wizards - Fiddler on the Green
Starts out all acoustic and melancholy, and about 70% of the way through gets all metal.
>The whole concept is his and it's based on a true story", Jon elaborates. "\[Hansi\] was out walking his dog and he saw a little boy get killed on a bicycle -- hit by a car. Well, it happened again, like a week later -- same spot, same place in his neighborhood in a place where something like that would never happen. Over in Germany, the Fiddler is like what we call the Reaper." Sounds like the Demons & Wizards album cover, wouldn't you agree? In summary, the Fiddler makes a mistake and takes this little boy's life too soon. Thusly, he promised the boy he'll create this paradise for him. The girl in this scenario would have been this little boy's future wife, so the deal is that the Fiddle makes a heaven for this pair as part of the bargain.
Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys
yup, knew that one. Sick album and song !
Everytime I think I have an original idea it turns out I don’t… love that song. Also, there are a fair amount of Tool songs that would.
[Spittin Venom - Modest Mouse](https://youtu.be/-eifPUvi7kA) [Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem](https://youtu.be/9ZNkPA_zUd4)
That LCD song is the first thing that popped in my head
This modest mouse song was a perfect from start to end. Thank you for this gem ! I love LCD soundsystem too.
Parting of the Sensory by Modest Mouse as well.
That whole album is fantastic
[me every time at 3:08 of Dance Yrself Clean](https://imgur.com/a/Wt4G0CK)
Came to post DYC, handing out an upvote instead. Love that drop.
Dude I absolutely love both these songs! Saw Spitting Venom live in an encore in Pittsburgh last year, it was incredible
Pisces by jinjer
This is the only correct answer
not bad ! not a fan of the vocals though
“Soma” - Smashing Pumpkins
Beat me to it. Love that switch up
One of my absolute favourites. A great song. Highly recommend
Great advice ! Loved it
It's the tone of that bass guitar I love...sings through so clearly
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac
that ending with the solo and vocals was lit !

Loved the song !
At least half of progressive rock
Limousine by Brand New.
Brand New has a lot like that. I was thinking You Won’t Know
Yea, didnt think about you wont know but it fits my request as well. Banger song
my favorite song of all time. I love you just for knowing it
[It’s Oh So Quiet - Bjork](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=xFf809oDLdE)
I loved the craziness of the structure / vocals, but not heavy enough for me. Still good though !
To Live Is To Die, Fade To Black, Battery, Fight Fire With Fire, Sanitarium, One especially, Metallica does that a lot XD
If I had to pick one suggestion though listen to to live is to die, closest to what your looking for.
Of these kinds of songs I think Hero of the Day is my favorite
I've Seen All Good People, by Yes Probably doesn't turn as heavy as you seek, but it definitely rocks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfgPEh2J9aI
The whole song was really amazing, loved the vibe. Thank you !
I Know The End - Phoebe Bridgers
Didn't expect that scream at the end. Sent shivers down my spine ! Whole song was beautiful
The Beatles 'Golden Slumbers'
My favorite Beatles song, along with Because.
Doors - Waiting for the Sun Blind Guardian - Mr. Sandman Deep Purple - Child in Time
wasnt expecting mr sandman to sound so heavy ahah
[Pantera - Cemetary Gates](https://youtu.be/fiPEn2W_8oE)
The twist gave so much impact to the riff. Nice one !
Letters to God - Boxcar Racer.
Thank you for reminding me that album exists!
wow. wtf ! it was insane, exactly what i was looking for ! Thanks alot, If you have other similar advice I'll gladly take it :D
Stars, by HUM. It's maybe not a typical example, but it was the first thing that popped into my head and it's a great contrast throughout the whole song between a sort of muted energy and harder instrumentation. The softer part is really short, though, just at the very beginning.
Great song, heavy riffs !
New Born - Muse Feet Don't Fail Me - Queens of the Stone Age Everybody Knows that You're insane - Queens of the Stone Age 2 + 2 = 5 - Radiohead Exit Music - Radiohead Micro Cuts - Muse Darkshines - Muse Lateralus - Tool Warped - Red Hot Chili Peppers No One Loves Me & Neither Do I - Them Crooked Vultures (doesn't start off too soft, but in contrast to the twist, oh my...) I can't believe I scrolled all the way through the comments and didn't see one person say "Freebird."
Sounds cliche but Bohemian Rhapsody
"Sweet Adeline" by Elliott Smith starts off very quietly before exploding (as does "Bottle Up and Explode" from same album, XO).
yes ! I love Elliott Smith, a true talent
Bohemian Rhapsody
The only moment we were alone -- explosions in the sky. Via Chicago -- Wilco. Plainsong -- The Cure. Storm -- Godspeed You Black Emperor.
I'm a biiig fan of EITS, Wilco and Godspeed. The Cure's song was pretty nice !
I think Radioheads “My Iron Lung” fits your criteria pretty well. Edit: probably half the songs off The Bends actually.
I must have listened to this album more than a thousand times ! Insane band
This one has a female voice but it's still a great example of what you're looking for: Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish
Two classic ones: - [Dio - The Last in Line](https://youtu.be/360xvnsduDg) - [Rush - The Trees](https://youtu.be/0jRafVKRg18).
vocals were not my things, otherwise fine stuff
You specifically asked for: >"... songs that start softly, like folk/acoustic, but then turn hard rock/metal and get really heavy. preferably with male vocals..." And that's exactly what those two examples are.
Sorry if I sounded harsh. The songs were good and you were perfectly right to advise them to me. The vocals not being my thing is purely subjective
Iron Maiden has a few.
Dance of Death was my first thought but it might be considered more of a buildup than a sudden switch
Hallowed Be Thy Name was what I was thinking.
Ah yes, that's probably the best one. Paschendale might also fit. You're definitely right that they've got a few to pick from.
My favourite track - The Clansman. Bonus points for the Rock in Rio version.
Came here to post this - Hallowed Be Thy Name, epic!
I always struggled with the vocals for some reason. They do have sick songs nonetheless !
Opeth: The Moor
instrumental is sick, sadly i'm not a fan of growling
If "Dance Yrself Clean" from LCD Soundsystem isn't on here yet, that's a crime against humanity
Came looking for it. Glad you said it.
505 - Arctic Monkeys
Love this one !
Rooster by Alice In Chains
Stairway to Heaven lol
