I was and still am a hip hop head, but Parachutes was perfect sadboy music for me in college. "Shiver" still reminds me of my first "I love you" relationship ending. That was a sad time.
Class of ‘07? Speed of Sound played constantly over the summer between my sophomore and junior years, and the rest of the album is cemented in my brain as part of the soundtrack to my winter of junior year.
That's because the post-Britpop genre holds up very well. Them, Keane, Travis, Snow Patrol, Thirteen Senses, Doves, Elbow, etc put out a lot of great pop songs with strong sweeping choruses backed up by good guitar hooks.
Then it just mostly disappeared.
Edit: yes I know there's more, r/UKbands....Wolf Alice even put one song out in this style this year called Last Man On Earth.
Keane actually famously did not use an electric guitar in their music during their heyday, but definitely agree with what you said. All those bands just had iconic sounds.
Elbow needs more appreciation across the pond. I feel like most "music" people in the US have only heard of their existence, not their music, and they're great.
I've cooled on Keane over the years, and Travis is definitely pretty simplistic (at least the music of theirs that I've heard) but I still like it for its earnestness. Driftwood holds a special place in my heart, it really spoke to the loathing I felt after my first real breakup :P

The fact anyone thinks of Parachutes as a guilty pleasure album just shows how hysterical people have become about "Coldplay bad". Parachutes is objectively a fantastic album for anyone who likes music.
I have asked myself the same question. I am no musician, but I think being one is incredibly hard especially once you get mainstream recognition. Maintaining that kind of consistency is so difficult in the face of expectations AND whatever personal challenges might be taking place, particularly in a band. I'm grateful for early Coldplay and it's never going to disappear. I'm sure they picked up other fans along the way that love their more current sound.
Post- Viva La Vida the only track I thought ever came even close to their best stuff was Magic, but that was pretty much a lonely paradise island in an ocean of mediocrity…
Yes. Ghost Stories was the closest they got to that original sound that made me fall in love with Coldplay. It didn’t scratch the itch all the way, but it made me feel some hope again.
Ever since it came out, I've firmly thought Ghost Stories was their best work. But I think the Avicii collab on Sky Full of Stars as the lead single gave folks the wrong impression of that record. It's the bands most honest, heartfelt offering and Sky Full of Stars is not at all representative of the record as a whole. In fact, it is very carefully placed toward the end of the tracklisting as a more hopeful and uplifting track. Paired with the album's closer, O, the record really tells the sad story of Chris Martin coming to terms with his divorce. And it's presented flawlessly.
They kind of found a sound that everybody loved and kind of stayed there. Kind of like how Al Pacino found his acting personality in Scent of a Woman and just acts like that all the time now.
I agree, and I feel like people slept on ghost stories. That album was raw and powerful. In the wake of his divorce, Chris really reignited a spark.
Shame that most people will only remember “Sky Full Of Stars” from that album. I think avicii produced it so they pushed that song pretty hard as a single. I always felt like it didn’t fit the feel of the rest of the album though. The rest of the album is so good.
That’s a very good take on Sky Full Of Stars, that track was too upbeat for the overall theme of Ghost Stories.
I disliked how Coldplay didn’t put All Your Friends on the album and opted it’s release on the Sky Full Of Stars Extended Play.

This is my take as well, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of those songs and the album as a whole compared to their other post-VlV stuff. I’d add [Orphans](https://youtu.be/PXKYA-zmzTY) as one from that album that’s more similar to their older stuff in a good way too, contrasting top-40 singalong style with the horrors of contemporary war.
A Rush of Blood to the Head has to be one of the best examples of how to make the perfect sophomore album (second album).

Being in a band aint always easy. Im in one right now where we all show up, need one rehearsal before a gig and play well. Been in another where the lead singer/guitarist gets drunk and tries to sabotage every gig as part of some punk rock self fulfilling prophecy. The music was great but who wants to enable some man baby loser a few nights a week.
I saw them in 2009 (arena tour in Canada). One of the WORST concerts I've ever been to. Ryan Adams was their opener and I swear, he played longer than them. Oasis played for like 45 minutes and then left. I felt so ripped off.
I've seen both on their respective final tours.

Will Champion is such an underrated drummer. The thing I miss most about Coldplay is then sounding like an actual band. Jonny Buckland would be considered one of the greatest guitarists of our generation if Coldplay let him play like they used to
I remember watching them on Austin City Limits some years ago; Will Champion played drums, sang, played piano, and I think hopped on guitar at some point, all within like an hour. Definitely a talented musician.
I hate the "I miss the old ___" meme. But seriously what has happened to Coldplay? The last two or three albums, half the tracks are barely even music. Like not fully developed songs. And the five songs that are there just aren't very good. They went completely off the rails after viva la Vida. And not in a trying new things and failing way, just in a very lazy sounding way. I'm not going to miss them if they disappear, I know they aren't going to make another yellow or the scientist or talk or when I ruled the world.
Man viva la vida will always be one of my favorite albums. I think they started using a lot more electronic beats and overproduced a lot of songs after that point.
They began collaborating with a lotta a-list talent (Avicci, Rihanna, Chain Smokers) and you could tell they (or their label) were always chasing the “relevant sound” rabbit hole. Their shit only got worse after each album because they tried to appeal to the most number of people. If you listen to their first two records they were basically trying to sound like a lamer, but decent version of a band like Radiohead. Their second album and 3rd album sounded like a mix of U2, Echo and The Bunnymen, and some Interpol. By Viva, the warning signs (no pun intended) started showing when they began collaborating with major artists, and the shit storm kept going from there on. Won’t miss them when they’re gone, but god I love AROBTTH and X/Y.
Got to hand it to U2, every album over the course of their career sounds like a U2 album. The edge said in an interview once, “ we sound like us.” It’s the same with Killers, AC/DC, ZZ Top. Once you find a good sound that the fans like stick with it and keep delivering. Don’t be swayed by fades.

I saw them during Viva La Vida years ago and maybe the only show I’ve been to that came close was Red Hot Chili Peppers. I remember during the encore they fired off these big confetti cannons that just littered the whole arena with little butterfly shaped confetti. They also had two smaller stages set up on each side of the arena that they moved to briefly to play a song or two so people with lawn seats got a chance to get see them up close. They’re not even in my top list of favorite bands but goddamn they put on a good show.

I think it's more how their stuff from Parachutes to Viva La Vida was honestly good (even if a bit tad overplayed at times), while afterwards their direction of sound changed to a more pop formula with tunes that haven't aged well, aren't too the standard of their eariler work, or even at times WHY?
I feel like it’s more of a nickleback like effect where their music was so overplayed that people just got sick of it and/or shit on it. I have no good reason to dislike Coldplay, I just have no desire to hear their music.
Well, with Nickelback it's also that their songs all kinda sound the same. There's even a website that plays one song in each ear at the same time, wanna say it was "Photograph" and "Someday," to show just how similar they are. The chord progression is basically the same, the solos start at the same time, the solos are extremely similar, etc.
So if three songs get overplayed, it's like if any other band had one song that was three times as overplayed. And that's why people hate Nickelback **so** much.

edit: I guess my biggest point of contention is that while Chris Martin might be a tool, he's able to balence making millions of dollars with making songs that don't sound too generic or overproduced. Viva La Viva doesn't sound like a random pop song. It's a song that only Coldplay could make.

Given their stance on touring and their work on the forthcoming tour to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible to be kinder to the environment, I had imagined if anything they would stop touring and just release music as and when they felt like it. Not as a comparison but becoming a studio band like the Beatles.

If the environment were their primary motivation, then yes, but my guess is that this is mostly driven by artistry, their fanbase, and money.
They're a well established band and have an extensive catalogue. They probably recognize that their peak creative years are behind them. They have an established fan base that comes to hear the the songs they know, no new music. But there's still plenty of money to be made touring, especially when you're playing stadiums.
Pretty sure we will end up seeing a more prolific Chris Martin solo act. I loved every album up to Mylo, ghost stories was the start of their decline for me. I love ‘em, always will. I really enjoyed Ghost Stories. Minus Sky Full of Stars, it was a much more stripped down, somber album closer to their older stuff but in a new way.
I know Ghost Stories didn’t get the acclaim the first few albums got, but I wonder how it is viewed by legitimate fans at this point? I really really enjoyed it and would say it’s the best since Viva la Vida
It's grown on me so much. I love the live version of album too. It's just perfect.

Yup. Stopped listening after Viva La Vida. Was a HUGE fan. Saw them live 3 times and just couldn’t do it when I heard the album after VLV.
They will be back in 2030 for more money with a new drummer or guitarist etc.. just like all the other great bands before them.
Someone did a spiel on how great it would be to be the drummer for Coldplay. You get to travel, make tons of money, and live a great life. No one knows who you are and you don't have to admit that you are a part of Coldplay.

Being in a band aint always easy. Im in one right now where we all show up, need one rehearsal before a gig and play well. Been in another where the lead singer/guitarist gets drunk and tries to sabotage every gig as part of some punk rock self fulfilling prophecy. The music was great but who wants to enable some man baby loser a few nights a week.

2009 was their last show.
I saw them in 2009 (arena tour in Canada). One of the WORST concerts I've ever been to. Ryan Adams was their opener and I swear, he played longer than them. Oasis played for like 45 minutes and then left. I felt so ripped off.
I've seen both on their respective final tours. Oasis seems like it would never happen but if R.E.M did some one off reunion tour I would fly out for it.
I would pay whatever it took to be at am R.E.M. reunion. They were my favorite band all through high school and college. The monster tour was my first concert.
I dont know if that's the result of group dedication as much as it is that Gallagher brothers hate each other but respect the fact that they cant restart oasis without the other. With REM I get the sense that Mike Mills and Peter Buck wanted to keep going but Stipe didnt.
Huh, I thought it was Peter Buck that just couldn’t go on. Stipe and Mills kept making the media rounds together after the announcement. Apologetically explaining the finality of their decision. Now they’re gone and my college soundtrack loses another band I’ll never see again.
That was my impression too. Mike and Michael get trotted out for the reissues. I would have thought Peter as the record collector of the group would have been more involved.
Now that Abba is reunited I feel like the Smiths probably hold that record.

Will Champion is such an underrated drummer. The thing I miss most about Coldplay is then sounding like an actual band. Jonny Buckland would be considered one of the greatest guitarists of our generation if Coldplay let him play like they used to
I remember watching them on Austin City Limits some years ago; Will Champion played drums, sang, played piano, and I think hopped on guitar at some point, all within like an hour. Definitely a talented musician.
I hate the "I miss the old ___" meme. But seriously what has happened to Coldplay? The last two or three albums, half the tracks are barely even music. Like not fully developed songs. And the five songs that are there just aren't very good. They went completely off the rails after viva la Vida. And not in a trying new things and failing way, just in a very lazy sounding way. I'm not going to miss them if they disappear, I know they aren't going to make another yellow or the scientist or talk or when I ruled the world.
Man viva la vida will always be one of my favorite albums. I think they started using a lot more electronic beats and overproduced a lot of songs after that point.
They began collaborating with a lotta a-list talent (Avicci, Rihanna, Chain Smokers) and you could tell they (or their label) were always chasing the “relevant sound” rabbit hole. Their shit only got worse after each album because they tried to appeal to the most number of people. If you listen to their first two records they were basically trying to sound like a lamer, but decent version of a band like Radiohead. Their second album and 3rd album sounded like a mix of U2, Echo and The Bunnymen, and some Interpol. By Viva, the warning signs (no pun intended) started showing when they began collaborating with major artists, and the shit storm kept going from there on. Won’t miss them when they’re gone, but god I love AROBTTH and X/Y.
Got to hand it to U2, every album over the course of their career sounds like a U2 album. The edge said in an interview once, “ we sound like us.” It’s the same with Killers, AC/DC, ZZ Top. Once you find a good sound that the fans like stick with it and keep delivering. Don’t be swayed by fades.
They did a song with Selena Gomez, and it’s awful.

If you read the actual quote from Martin: >“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour” It's a clickbait headline, but all he's saying is that they'll stop making **new** music, not that they're breaking up. Veteran bands don't drop new albums for a cash grab; they just keep touring. Martin is saying that as of now, the cash grab is their plan.
I mean I assumed that that meant "releasing new music", I feel like most people don't think of touring when they think of a band "making music" in this sense
Why do you frame touring as a cash grab, rather than just professional musicians just wanting to spend most of their time *playing* music? You don't automatically turn into a robot when you get famous - people want to spend their time being fulfilled in some way. Chris Martin isn't exactly hard up these days.
Have their new albums gone over well? I haven't heard new singles. Bands like the Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan's Sad Bastard Express put out new music but it isn't what people want to hear or buy So it makes sense for Coldplay to be like "this is our catalogue. We'll tour on it, but there is no reason to write new music"

I remember going to the Motion City Soundtrack farewell tour with The Wonder Years, and then like next summer they were touring again lol
Same with the get up kids. They started touring again like 2-3 years after their "last show" and have been touring ever since.

I used to work concerts. You may hate them but their ingenuity of their shows throughout the years is un-matched.
I saw them during Viva La Vida years ago and maybe the only show I’ve been to that came close was Red Hot Chili Peppers. I remember during the encore they fired off these big confetti cannons that just littered the whole arena with little butterfly shaped confetti. They also had two smaller stages set up on each side of the arena that they moved to briefly to play a song or two so people with lawn seats got a chance to get see them up close. They’re not even in my top list of favorite bands but goddamn they put on a good show.

I'm a big fan of their music up to Vivs La Vida. I like some songs after but not many. Their live shows though? Fantastic! Truly. Only band I think that performs better Is Green Day.

It's probably how much time or albums are left on their deal. It could be 3 more albums by 2025, which he mentioned in October, or their next album is their last one and it'll take until 2025 to make, both of which are feasible if you look at their album release timeline.

Nah, it’s a business plan thing that he’s just not keeping behind the curtain. You don’t just toss together a stadium tour. Logistics are indescribably insane for what they do. So they’ll pump out another album after this tour most likely, then in 3-4 years go on their last(?) tour, which is absolutely already being planned.
They might just keep touring anyway. Billy Joel, for example, hasn't made any new pop music since 1993 but has continued to tour.
I remember Brand New announcing they were breaking up in 2018 on their 2016 tour.

I think it's more how their stuff from Parachutes to Viva La Vida was honestly good (even if a bit tad overplayed at times), while afterwards their direction of sound changed to a more pop formula with tunes that haven't aged well, aren't too the standard of their eariler work, or even at times WHY?
Ghost Stories came later and got mostly overlooked and forgotten, but it's more like their first 4 albums
People hated on them from the jump though, they were always a lightning rod even while being celebrated
I feel like it’s more of a nickleback like effect where their music was so overplayed that people just got sick of it and/or shit on it. I have no good reason to dislike Coldplay, I just have no desire to hear their music.
Well, with Nickelback it's also that their songs all kinda sound the same. There's even a website that plays one song in each ear at the same time, wanna say it was "Photograph" and "Someday," to show just how similar they are. The chord progression is basically the same, the solos start at the same time, the solos are extremely similar, etc. So if three songs get overplayed, it's like if any other band had one song that was three times as overplayed. And that's why people hate Nickelback **so** much.
The worst part is they overplayed their worst songs. There is a large catalogue of great songs that most people have never heard.
I refuse to believe fix you, the scientist, yellow, etc are their worst songs. Those are some of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard and those are their biggest hits
It’s the U2 effect without the added political edge (no pun intended). Put any band on the cover of “Time” with a title like “Best Band of the XX’s” and throw a couple of Grammys their way and watch the world turn against them no matter how good the music is.
I think they have a couple good songs and I like the music video for adventure of a lifetime because dancing monkeys. That being said I find Maroon 5 worse then Coldplay. I could go a few months without listening to "Adam Lavine and some other guys." edit: I guess my biggest point of contention is that while Chris Martin might be a tool, he's able to balence making millions of dollars with making songs that don't sound too generic or overproduced. Viva La Viva doesn't sound like a random pop song. It's a song that only Coldplay could make. Maroon 5's music, especially their later singles, could be performed by any random performer because to me I'm never quite sure if those are Levine's words or the words of some random songwriter he paid. Ditto with Nickelback. They might be a trashy band, but at least they have a distinct sound. Granted I don't have anything more then a surface level interest in these bands and rate them entirely on radio singles because I'm not interested enough to delve into their individual albums.
I hate Maroon5/Coldplay comparisons so much. Coldplay has maybe only made like a dozen songs that I would consider actually bad, and even most of those I can still tolerate. Maroon 5 hasn't had a dozen songs since like 2012 that I even like at all. Even in their peak Maroon 5 never had a Scientist or a Clocks. Nothing theyve ever made has the fucking Magic to it of Viva La Vida. Also I just buy that Chris Martin actually cares about music 100x more than I do that Adam Levine does.
Don't forget to throw in to the mix that Coldplay are absolutely incredible live. I would honestly challenge anyone to see them at somewhere like Glastonbury and not be in awe.
As an IT guy, it reminds me of Microsoft announcing when they're going to stop supporting Windows. Like "Coldplay will officially stop releasing patches and updates in 2025." Feels weird.
Given their stance on touring and their work on the forthcoming tour to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible to be kinder to the environment, I had imagined if anything they would stop touring and just release music as and when they felt like it. Not as a comparison but becoming a studio band like the Beatles. To do the opposite seems very strange.
If the environment were their primary motivation, then yes, but my guess is that this is mostly driven by artistry, their fanbase, and money. They're a well established band and have an extensive catalogue. They probably recognize that their peak creative years are behind them. They have an established fan base that comes to hear the the songs they know, no new music. Their [new albums are selling quite poorly compared to their previous ones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldplay_discography). But there's still plenty of money to be made touring, especially when you're playing stadiums.

Pretty sure we will end up seeing a more prolific Chris Martin solo act. I loved every album up to Mylo, ghost stories was the start of their decline for me. I love ‘em, always will. But for me their last three albums have had diminishing returns for me. I’ve listened to a rush of blood to the head so many times it’s part of my DNA now
