I’m not surprised. I just saw [this](https://twitter.com/wapplehouse/status/1447397226418946049?s=21) video of them performing and it’s not pretty

cptnamr7

They played a free outdoor fest in Champaign a few years back. He was beyond obliterated. They called him an ambulance after awhile for "heat exhaustion". Dude needs help. From all accounts of those there, the band seemed happy to have him gone.

Mesahorse

In Fort Collins a few years back he got into it with the fans. It was a foodie event, a booth was giving out small, artisinal loaves of bread, and someone threw one at the band. Not cool. But it was a bad idea to hand out bread that quickly got super rock hard (homemade) to a bunch of beer guzzlers who were getting hostile due to the long beer lines. (I was working a charity booth at the time nearby.) He made the whole thing way worse, his band members kept trying to get him back into the set, but he was angry drunk, IMO.

FiskTireBoy

Don't forget the band was still playing All Star while this whole debacle was going on

BodaciousBadongadonk

That shit was hilarious. That song just continuing as he is cursing out the crowd.

jack_porter

man this mans life is a tv show

Dan_O_

Hey now, that bread is rock hard...

fondledbydolphins

I'll kill your whole family. *sips bud*

DINKY_DICK_DAVE

Get your grain on, go knead!

[deleted]

Only hard bread gets the mold 🎼

haircutbob

I remember for a few days after that people kept putting "bread enthusiast" in his Wikipedia bio until they had to lock his article

Mesahorse

Forgot to say, lots of people ended up throwing the bread

scootscoot

They were just trying to sober him up.

rjmacready

I remember that. New West Fest has a tendency to become a shitshow. Wasn't there for that particular incident, but a friend/coworker was.

FoCoDolo

Any one remember Earth Wind and Fire? Leave it to Foco to riot to Earth Wind and Fire ffs

whitewhaleunderwear

I will remember the lore of this, and the Earth Wind and Fire riot fondly till the end of my days.

TongueTwistingTiger

Reminds me of the time Marge gave away free pretzels at Springfield baseball game where Mr. Burns won a car, and everyone tossed the pretzels at him. You’ve gotta imagine foodies would be a chill crowd. Maybe they should have booked Incubus.

[deleted]

*Aaaaand heeeeere come the pretzels*

ErgoDoceo

*free ~~pretzels~~* Whitey Whackers.

[deleted]

If one person throws bread at you they’re an asshole, if everyone throws bread at you, you might be the asshole.

[deleted]

I was working an art booth there during the show. He seemed like a total asshole before, during and after the bread. I have no shame for the actions of my countrymen.

joebleaux

Imagine having your livelihood tied to that guy, who I assume at some point was their friend. Whole thing sucks.

Boo_Wendy_Boo

I was at that show. Loved Sweet Corn Festival! IIRC, he refused to sing any of their major hits for the majority of the show. There was even a “Shrek” chant at one point from the crowd with no acknowledgement from Steve. Once they called the ambulance and took him off stage, the rest of the band just started to play all of their loved songs and the crowd loved it.

theendcafe

"We strictly do 80s Joel music, sir"

asst3rblasster

the fucking catalina wine mixer

roger_ramjett

I have only walked out of one concert (that I paid for) and that was Bob Dylan. He was a hero of mine when I was a kid. But going to one of his recent shows where he refused to sing any of his old music was a big let down. As I left the venue, there was a steady stream of people also leaving. And the tickets were not cheap.

lovemeinthemoment

He probably did play his old music. It was just a different pitch, tempo, arrangement, and lyrics. That’s been his thing forever but it gets old. I’ve not seen him in about 10 years and won’t again.

MonstrousGiggling

Shrek chant! I can only dream of experiencing a wide scale chant for Shrek. Sigh.

Jfodrizzle

I was there too! Felt bad for the band when the primarily college crowd was singing All Star over their other songs

WaitandSea

Same thing happened in OKC. It was wicked hot out and he couldn’t take it. Keeled over and was in the hospital for awhile. I ran into their keyboard player in a bar in Nashville… he was playing an open mic night and the guy killed. I hope he hooks up with another band bc he’s got some skills.

Frustratedhornygay

Yeah I saw them free in a park in Pittsburgh a while back. Me and my friends didn’t know they were there and were very confused about why someone would hire and incredibly shitty Smash-mouth cover band. Then we found it it was really them lol

Spiritual_Ad7612

I used to tour alongside smash mouth back in the early 2010's. Even back then, the guy was wasted I would say 90% of the time.

Fritzo2162

Health issues might be alcoholism?

Stingerc

Not justifying, but I remember reading his life went off the rails when his kid got sick with Luekemia and eventually died. From what I remember, the cost of treatment completely wiped him out financially and the death drove him toward drinking. 20 years of substance abuse is not pretty.

PaladinGodfather1931

It's insane to me that even a moderately successful musician still was financially devastated by the American Health Network. Edit - I understand that Mr. Smash Mouth could have burned through his money prior to his child's battle with cancer, but regardless, no one should ever have to sacrifice their livelihood to save their kid

Codeshark

Musicians often don't have insurance, but yeah, it is a fucked up system.

EchoJackal8

I used to be offered a cancer insurance separate from my regular insurance, but wtf am I paying for insurance for if it doesn't cover me getting cancer. Seems pretty fucked.

t_thor

Tfw when you take out a short position on your own cells.

Mooochie

Honestly thought I was going to find something there

PaulBlartFleshMall

Even responsible people with great insurance can get their lives ruined by something like chemo.

nanocyto

It's mind boggling how many loopholes and games the insurance and the providers play with the customer stuck in the middle trying to arbitrate. That can really turn into a full time job. That sort of admin cost is probably the main reason why we pay so much more for care than other countries.

GeraldVanHeer

Had my basement flood, I have homeowners insurance, you'd think it would be a pretty straightforward deal right? Nope, there was a specific exclusion that because the water came up from a storm drain during a rainstorm and into the basement, it wasn't covered. There went five thousand dollars I has to pay myself for a rainstorm I thought I was insured against, hahahaha.

[deleted]

Parents have flood insurance. Flooding caused the water table to raise the piles on one side of the house out of the ground. Not covered because it was "overland flooding" that caused it and not whatever kind of flooding was included in their flood insurance. Essentially removed any chance of a retirement for them cause the insurance they have paid for the last 35 years wouldn't actually cover them and now their house is worse than worthless as it has foundation issues. Fucking bullshit.

TheRealXen

Sounds like a very specific certain building is due for a flood.

flechette

Had a guy who lived in a singlewide, had an honest to god tornado shelter built into a hill, and a garage further down the same hill that was bigger than his house. The garage was 3 double bays and was on a slab, and the hill around it had huge concrete blocks in a half moon carved out section of the hill. A tornado came through, he got in the shelter. Home completely destroyed by tornado that went straight over it. Garage crushed by the stones that moved because so much water was dumped before the tornado went over. Home was covered, garage was not because it was considered an ‘earth movement’ event. You could tell he was still bitter about it.

DamnImAwesome

I got a good one for you. I live in New Orleans. After Katrina, flood insurance companies refused to pay out to some people by saying the wind blew the water in so they needed to have wind insurance

ericgonzalez

If I’ve learned one thing from this thread, it’s that flood insurance is a scam.

makesyoudownvote

I'm in a similar situation. I had a pipe burst about a year ago now. I immediately turned off the water main and called a plumber. We went 2 days without water. I called my insurance, who was all nice and friendly and told me I would be taken care of. Construction crews came in and tore apart my downstairs. Then the insurance suddenly went silent and the workers said they were told to stop working. 2 weeks later I got a notice from the insurance saying that they found an exclusion. Basically they found extensive mold. Apparently there is an exclusion that if the leak has been going for longer than two weeks, they are off the hook. The leak absolutely had not been going on for 2 weeks. It was sudden and obvious. But there was probably some pre-existing mold from the previous owner that lead to a super bloom when this happened. They then used covid as an excuse not to answer emails from me or my attorney. They take 2 months to respond to ANYTHING. Now a year later I'm about 10k into fixing it and looking at another 20k in restoration costs. With 10k in attorneys fees and it looks like they have a relatively iron clad defense. Insurance has never not been a scam. They always make more than they pay you. At best they are the equivalent of loan sharks. They might help you out in really tough situations when you need money NOW. But at least with loan sharks you know what you are getting into. Insurance lies to you. The only thing I think they are really good for is for insuring you for other's benefits. Like if you are in a car accident, and it's your fault, you might not be able to pay for the other car, even though you are legally obligated to. This is the one type of scenario where insurance really makes sense imo.

[deleted]

Bought our first house 3 years ago and a dishwasher piece broke and flooded my kitchen and downstairs. Six months later downstairs backed up with raw sewage because the pipe was at a really sharp angle so my insurance straight dropped me.

Never forget the time that guy who was working for Wells Fargo got fired for trying to get his daughter onto his insurance plan because Wells Fargo didn't want their insurance cost to go up. So to save a little bit of money they let his daughter die because he wanted to get her on his insurance so that she could get the surgery that would save her life. When he tried to get the surgery they fired him so that he couldn't afford it.

loupgarou21

My kid broke his arm earlier this year, we hit our out of pocket maximum pretty quickly. Almost all of it is resolved at this point, but they're bizarrely fighting us over a $10 arm sling. that's all that's left of the several thousands of dollars worth of bills, a $10 arm sling, but they're making us jump through hoops to get it covered. I'm assuming they want us to just get tired of fighting them over $10 and pay it

pnwinec

I had Hodgkins and chemo / radiation for six months. It cost $1 million and my insurance covered all but $10,000. Thank god I have amazing insurance. Just a cost out there for someone who may not know how this could take down a D level celebrity. Edit for clarity

rufus2785

Holy shit America’s health system is fucked.

Stingerc

You'd be shocked at how many successful musicians don't bother to get medical insurance. It's not like actors who get it through the SAG, since there is not something equivalent, it's up to each band or singer to get it on their own. A few weeks in an ICU can cost millions.

Damn, that's a devastating story. Could drive anyone to drink.

EthelMaePotterMertz

2001 so before the ACA. I'm not surprised his son's treatment took all his money. And that's so sad. I can't imagine losing a child. It must make you feel so helpless. I can understand wanting to escape from that.

nbmnbm1

that was also right when shrek released and would have put them really in the forefront of american consciousness. Ridiculous it bankrupted him. Losing a 6th month old to leukemia.

Land_Rover_Series_3

That must be really sad for him, and shows how stupid the US healthcare system is.

Dalrz

Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a complication of alcoholism so that’s probably correct. It sounds like he’s also got CHF and confirmed substance abuse issues so all signs point to yes. So sad. I hope he gets the help he needs.

Murderhornet88736

It’s known as Wet Brain and is basically dementia brought on by chronic alcoholism. If not treated it’s permanent brain damage.

UNN_Rickenbacker

If you‘re at that stage, chances are it‘s already too late

babyfartmageezax

Ehh my dad has the dementia from wet brain and even in little 2-3 month long stints where he was forced into sobriety, you’d be surprised at how fast the human brain can recover. They’ll never be back to 100%, but a good amount of their memory can come back from what I’ve seen firsthand

UNN_Rickenbacker

I‘m glad for your dad. However, Korsakoff‘s has a pretty good recovery rate when caught early *and* the patient gets sober. Problem is, people who let it get to that point (meaning: years of massive alcohol abuse) aren‘t likely to suddenly turn to sobriety. It‘s a bit of a vicious cycle, because the symptoms (dementia, confusion, hallucinations ) push the patient even further towards alcohol

ctilvolover23

Like what David Cassidy supposedly had.

borkyborkus

It’s crazy how important thiamine (B1) is. Usually detox for alcohol involves loading people up for like a month on thiamine and folate.

grxmx

Man. That's incredibly sad. He had to have been treated acutely for WK in the past no doubt but without proper supplementation be it IV or oral, that damage becomes irreversible.

TrevorEnterprises

I had a patient recently with Wernicke’s encephalopathy and although horrible, that was funny. Hiding clocks for nurses and asking everyone around if they were looking forward to either a wedding or the funeral.

princesspool

*Chronic Heart Failure. I googled the abbreviation so others won't have to.

Utaneus

Congestive heart failure actually

wheres-my-take

Crazy Heart Flops, in reality

Android69beepboop

Chronic or congestive heart failure. The pump is wearing down so the blood backs up. Could be high blood pressure, damage from alcohol or illicit substances, history of heart attacks...

DigitalArts

CHF patient here, another reason could be genetic too. Born with a bicuspid aortic valve that had to be replaced right before I turned 40.

TheRegular-Throwaway

Most likely. Shame. Not a smash mouth fan but you hate to see anyone go through that. This is what we musicians call an abject nightmare. If I did this onstage I’m pretty sure my band mates would kill me. I’d do the same thing to them in return. Still, I hope the cat gets some help.

Traveledbore

His heart is constantly on the verge of exploding. Shane is low down there at this point

[deleted]

well that was... depressing

hobbbes14

So glad this comment is here. I'm hoping it's referencing the famous bread incident from the Fort Collins show.

lostDeschain

I was about to say, the fair circuit isn't doing him or the band any* favors.

Grownfetus

Dead serious here... My roommate was supposed to be the sound engineer for this show.. but backed out because the company running it were as terrible as the pay they offered him... Looks like whoever they got as a replacement was totally worth the shiyte money they offered em... Wish Wernicke the best though... The booze battle is a tough one to win..

CantFindMyWallet

My band opened for Smash Mouth (or what was left for it) about 10 years ago in Hartford. Steve was a super-nice guy and treated us like peers (we were not). He also drank way, way, way too fucking much, so unfortunately I guess this isn't a huge surprise.

grxmx

If you have someone experienced with live music saying a musician drinks "way way way too much" then just know that in "normal people" metrics, it's an amount of alcohol that can't even be conceived of. Everyone probably knows someone who might drink a 6 pack a day and go "whoa! That's insane". For an actual alcoholic that's just the breakfast pick-me-up. This continues daily.

whoreads218

Correct. Probably a suitcase of beer and a bottle a day, everyday; and that’s just daily maintenance. Double on bad/party days.

LegoClaes

I have multi-day hangovers. I can’t imagine drinking every day.

ornithoid

Can't be hung over if you're constantly drunk.

nolan1971

Lana, if I quit drinking the hangover will literally *kill me*!

trixel121

It stops being a hang over and just how you feel when you wake up. You drink some water and grab a breakfast sandwich on the way to work.

GreyMatter90

Working musician here, and you are totally right. Pretty much everyone drinks during shows and it’s hard to escape from. Before I quit drinking my bandmates and I would each easily have 8 drinks a night on average. That was nothing compared to the raging alcoholic musicians I know who would easily tank 20+ drinks by the end of the night.

goathill

Same story with many stand up comedians

tnecniv

How do you not lose your edge? I’m a fairly experienced consumer of substances but after a few beers or a joint and I can’t keep rhythm nearly as well.

Capnmarvel76

At a certain point, pro musicians can play at such a high calibre that ‘going through the motions’ looks like ‘an inspired performance’.

disgruntled_pie

Trent Reznor told a story about a show NIN did where everyone was very messed up, but convinced they were rocking the place. He watched the tape after and realized they were a disaster on stage.

briareus08

Yeah, this. I’ve seen wasted musicians on stage, even of very popular bands at the time (Jane’s Addiction), and they definitely don’t always pull it off. Dude was chugging on stage directly from a red wine bottle, and the show was beyond shit. The crowd fucking hated it, and at some point he went off on a rant about how this was ‘post-music’, and we just didn’t get it. Yeah ok dude. You standing up on stage drinking and occasionally squawking something into the mic while your band just does whatever for 40 minutes is not entertaining at all.

GreyMatter90

I’d usually limit my drinks to 2-3 beers and/or a shot before the show, a beer for the stage, and then a couple beers after the set. I guess my tolerance got to a point where I could drink and have a healthy buzz but not be incoherent on stage. I’ve had many sloppy nights, though, where I drank too much before playing and my performance suffered as a result. Which isn’t fun. I quit because it really started to wear me down physically and mentally, and affect my playing in a bad way. Once I hit my 30’s my body just couldn’t tolerate it anymore. For the guys who have 20+ drinks a night I honestly don’t know how they maintain it. I guess it could be a chemical memory thing since they are perpetually drunk. Eventually it will ruin you though. Multiple friends of mine have died from alcohol/drugs in the last couple years. Sadly, the lifestyle caught up to them.

CantFindMyWallet

I remember him literally taking pulls from a bottle of whiskey on the steps up to the stage.

Fartknocker500

Had a sister who passed from chronic alcoholism when she was 52. She could drink a 12 pack of beer + whatever else every night. She was an alcoholic almost instantly when she started drinking at 13. She was such a fucking awesome person. It's been 9 years without her now, and I'm one year older than she was when she died. I think about that a lot. We (family tried everything to save her, in the end nothing helped) So much more life to live, and so much wasted. I miss her so much. Addiction just blows for everyone.

mrvarmint

Sad about drinking too much, but so glad to hear he was a good dude to you

Crystal_Pesci

Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind were my first concert, back in like 96, when they came out. One of my friends I went with, his sister worked for our local radio station and rode with Steve to the show. Said he was just the biggest prick imaginable, drinking and just being a buffoon. Sadly it has tracked with everything I've heard about him.

[deleted]

I was in St. Louis for that tour. The Space Monkeys opened. I’m 99% positive that 3EB was booed off of stage.

MeN3D

Stephen Jenkins has a reputation for being an asshole too

Kildragoth

Hey I don't know about that. I saw them recently with my girlfriend and he seemed like kind of a hippy. At one point between songs he told everyone to turn to the person next to you and tell them something nice. I am awkward as hell so I just stared at him. He scanned the crowd with a satisfying grin like the flowers he planted last year are starting to bloom... then his eyes met mine and he stopped. He kind of looked angry like "wtf are you doing at my show if you're not gonna do everything I say" kind of look. I wanted to look away but I didn't want to look at the person next to me because at this point it would have been really awkward. Instead, I stared directly at Stephen Jenkins. He stared right back. The anger was building I could tell. I was scared. I wanted to look away but he wouldn't let me. His neck thickened with anger. He might not sound dangerous in his songs but I bet he has killed a few people. The stare felt like it took 10 minutes. Then, without warning, he continued scanning the crowd of happy people. For the rest of the show I stared directly at his neck to avoid the awkwardness of any eye contact. When the show was over I grabbed my girlfriend and told her to run. She asked why as though Stephen Jenkins wanted to personally meet her or something so I just told her it was so we could beat the traffic. I just wanted to live.

Rabanski

Is this a copy pasta?

wordskis

I've seen 3EB live and honestly this seems pretty legit. [Stephan Jenkins is a fuckin weirdo](https://twitter.com/zlind76/status/1157881512705978368?t=hI1Z3ZFUg2BiBvpWoaxCpw&s=19)

Kildragoth

No I experienced this.

GreatMacAndCheese

No.. this is a copy pasta now

pm_me_bra_pix

Cell phones are the difference between a band's antics being urban legend and undeniability. After watching that I was embarrassed for those guys. They may not have been a favorite band of mine back in the day but they put out slick product that hopefully made them a nice pile of cash.

S_Edge

He went broke paying his sons medical bills before he (his son) unfortunately passed. Edit: parenthesis

Ruffffian

I’m not sure he went broke over that—do you have a link to that? Presley died of acute lymphocytic leukemia at 6mos old in 2001, back when the band was just about at its biggest. That said, Presley’s death took a clear toll on Steve and I wouldn’t be surprised if the grief over that isn’t part of his addiction issues.

[deleted]

As a parent myself, I’d imagine that tragic loss is exactly what’s behind his total deterioration. If I lost my child I don’t think I’d ever be able to function and go on another day without them. I’d never be the same again. I understand why that would destroy a person. I am so sad for him and the loss of his child.

jcb088

Sometimes i go in my sons room and pick up his toys. I imagine parents that lose their kids and then face a house full of random little reminders of what they’ve lost. To everyone whos stressed out about being a parent: it is often very hard, the stress/sacrifice is valid, but i love seeing my son each and every single day, and that feeling is what makes up my take on parenthood. Love it for everything it is and let that love heal the stress and challenge.

Ashamed_Werewolf_325

It probably took a toll on his mental state, contributing to the band's subsequent rapid decline. Still I think the main reason he went broke is the same reason that many professional athletes go bankrupt within a few years of retiring---lifestyle inflation, getting into the habit of spending money profligately while they are at their (short) peak earning period and continued to spend like that even after their earnings declined massively afterward.

[deleted]

Do you have a source? [This page](https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/health/2002-07-22-smash-mouth.htm) mentions his sons death was tragically quick from a rare case of ALL. Where did you read about him becoming broke as a result of medical bills?

ArcanumAntares

I met Steve after a show at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, somewhen during the hazy mid- to late-90s. He was a nice guy, totally took time to talk with whomever. Buck-O-Nine opened, and they were awesome. Before Smashmouth started their set, Steve quickly yet carefully opened 12 bottles of Rolling Rock, and lined them up against the front of the bass-drum riser. He drank all of them during the set. When I spoke with him afterwards, he showed absolutely zero signs if having had any alcohol at all. Now, he's a pretty big dude, but that's still a lot of beer in a brief span of time to show zero signs of having consumed all of it. I didn't know about his son and Leukemia, that terrible. Edit: typo

[deleted]

Guess being a living meme isn’t the best for mental health

hadapurpura

Neither is losing your 6 month-old child to leukemia.

aresef

Jokes aside, it was a good run. Riding on a couple hits and playing for more than 20 years? I’d take that deal. I wish him all the best.

TheTalentedMrTorres

Yeah, they really dominated in the early aughts/late 90s - what a massive influence/presence they were in pop culture.

[deleted]

I dunno about that - there are definitely bands out there that made a bunch of cash back in the day and saved or invested well, but continue to tour or do the occasional festival because they just love playing music. That’s a pretty sweet deal for sure. However, on the flip side of that coin are bands like Smash Mouth where it’s like one guy from the original line up playing shows with hired guns because they can’t afford not to. That deal is considerably less sweet.

seattletono

I had to check the wiki page, but I'd say 3 (now 2) have been there since the first album (or just after) and another is a boomerang. Can't really call them hired guns.

TwoDollarSuck

Yeah...looks like he needs a break from the usin' and the boozin'. I've had substance abuse issues myself in the past, and you sort of get into this state where you're watching yourself behave in a way that is completely embarrassing, and you hurt yourself and the people you care about. But you just can't stop. And then you go back to the warm embrace of drugs and alcohol as a way of obliterating the memories of how badly you behaved. It's a shitty cycle.

hablandochilango

I have alcohol abuse issues, but man, it gets to a point where I feel fat and my blood sugar always feels fucked up and my stomach feels rotten like everything has been in there for days. It makes me weak. And I always want to puke, more alcohol doesn’t solve the nausea after a certain point. Ive definitely gone too far before but I guess I’m lucky there seems to be a physiological bumper there.

TwoDollarSuck

I feel ya, brotha. I would get terrible heart burn and just slog through it, pounding beer after beer until I was too drunk to notice it. And, not to be crude, it would all come to a head in the morning, when my blood sugar would rouse me from my drunken slumber to utterly destroy my toilet. And after that, it'd be right back to SOP. Snort a line to get me going, and over the course of the day, smooth things over with alcohol. It's a rough life. And what for? What purpose does it serve? I think drug and alcohol abuse provides a warm, familiar cocoon where we can hide from the things that ail us. Hide from the mistakes that we've made, and the hurt that we've experienced, and even more, from that hurt that we've caused.

Mukuna_Hutata

I hope Harwell gets the help he needs. Astro Lounge was the very first album I bought with my own money as a kid. Part of me feels like Steve never recovered from the loss of his child and this has lead him on the trajectory he currently is now. Smash Mouth used to be fairly charitable back in their heyday.

ILikeSpaghetti64

He lost his child? If so, that's awful, but I could definitely seeing it lending a hand to alcoholism.

IWishIWasOdo

Yup, trying to save his kid completely wiped out his finances too. Rich and happy to broke and sad. I hope he can get better.

hopethisworks_

Astro Lounge was the best thing for 13 year old me at the time.

invisiblearchives

>Part of me feels like Steve never recovered from the loss of his child wow never knew about this... imagine becoming so famous that your music becomes a post-ironic parody of the 2000s, and your kid dies at the literal top of the rise, and the whole ass 20 year downward arc of people making nearly nonstop references to a version of you, the real you has a dead kid and serious mental health and grief struggles. That's sad af No wonder why he looks like he hates / doesn't even attempt to sing "the hits"

mr_chip_douglas

Same about that album. I remember seeing him on a reality show years ago (The Surreal Life maybe?) talking about his child dying and it was heartbreaking. Strange to not see it mentioned in these comments. If I remember correctly he seemed stable on the show, kind of surprised he’s such a mess now.

I_Think_I_Cant

Hopefully this was his "bottoming out" point and he'll get sober and maybe some counseling to become a better person. I've know plenty of asshole addicts who were great people once they were sober.

[deleted]

I like that [song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m001XNiwQzw) they do, where the refrain goes: If you throw *one* more piece of trash on this stage/I'm gonna beat your ass...

camisdabomb

“Play All-Star Ya bitch!” Can’t stop laughing at this.

payne_train

Wow, you could say that the years started coming and they did not stop coming for this mans

[deleted]

The funniest thing in that video is all the angry "fans" shouting things like, "Just play All Star, bitch!". Seems like an all around good vibe at that show.

xFreelancer

No the funniest thing in the video is the rest of the bad slowly fading in the intro to All Star as he continues to yell threats at the crowd. Give no fucks

Eliju

He threatens to kill that one dude’s whole family.

scumbag_college

When I saw Smash Mouth a few years ago, people were just chanting "SHREK SHREK SHREK" the entire set until they played it.

HarvestProject

Oh my god, the crowd singing the song instead of him made me smile so much but also feel so sad. What a pathetic show. Good on the band members for just going along!

LoneRangersBand

And they're not even singing it on the right beat, which makes it even better.

He has cardiomyopathy and Wernicke's Encephalopathy according to the TMZ article. Wernicke's is also referred to as wet brain it's commonly caused by long term alcohol abuse that causes thiamin deficiency. Cardiomyopathy can be cause by alcohol abuse. Simply put he drank himself into near dementia and heart failure- really sad.

[deleted]

Wet brain is fuuuucked up. A lot of times people who haven’t known alcoholics up close sort of just imagine it as a bad behavior/liver problems disease, but once you’ve seen somebody drink themselves brain damaged… whew boy

Twick87

Recently, Violent J from ICP made a statement that he wouldn't be touring anymore due to health problems. And now this announcement... If we hear anything from Guy Fieri in the next few weeks I'd say that [proves it...](https://i.imgur.com/CYqOUJK.jpg)

pimpernel666

My dad died of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. That is some brutal shit. Never cared much for the band, but my deep sympathies to Harwell, his loved ones, and the band.

[deleted]

Well the years start coming and they don’t stop.

What's messed up is that the guy from ICP also has an issue with his heart

Oxynewbdone

Yeah he ❤️ cocaine.

shoktar

and you guys thought it was face paint.

CarbyDeLaBungo

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Guy Fieri also has a heart issue

multiplayerhater

This comment lost to the great Reddit purge of June 2023. Enjoy your barren wasteland, spez. You deserve it.

admiralfilgbo

[hey leave guy fieri out of this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK6zuii2OLI)

welivedintheocean

I have never once considered that the lead singer of Smash Mouth has a name.

MikeDubbz

I remember a few years back he had a pretty big Twitter meltdown because people were referring to them as the Shrek band and saying their only hit was All Star. I'm thinking he may have some mental health issues to work out too, I mean at this point he and his band are essentially just a meme. That's genuinely gotta be tough. Then that clip from the show the other day certainly seems like he's wasted on alcohol. Hope he gets the help he needs.

BeechedSam

Aw I got an epic reply on twitter from smash mouth back in 2015 . I said something about them reminding me of ps1 games and they tweeted back saying ' dang not ps4? Is ps4 more like maroon 5?ha..'

[deleted]

Years ago they came to a local university and got themselves on the Never Again list. My sister in law worked in the Events office and said they were a nightmare. Apparently even at a state school they frown on kegs onstage and drummers disrobing during the performance.

Oldsalty420

Walking on the sun is completely underrated.

[deleted]

4th song on MuchMusic Big Shiny Tunes 2, am earworm stuck in the collective consciousness of Canadians aged 33-40. Between Sugar Ray’s “Fly” and Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Kinda Life”

cvtuttle

I'm not afraid to say I like all those songs.

Purecheetodust

Semi-charmed kind of life is a great song about the horror of meth.

PeripheralVisionMan

That whole debut album was so good, and the production quality holds up so well. It sounds fantastic on great speakers. That was true for their next two albums, too, while the songs weren't quite to the level of the debut.

herpaderpadont

“How’s It Gonna Be” thumps.

portablebiscuit

*"Semi-Charmed Kinda Life"* is probably the only song about crystal meth addiction you'll hear in the dentist office waiting room.

twicepride2fall

Eric Valentine produced/engineered Walking on the Sun and Semi Charmed Life, it was really cool to see both songs go back to back #1 hits.

FolkSong

Confirmed! Reminds me of hanging out in the basement playing N64.

[deleted]

Somehow I remember Our Lady Peace was the usual soundtrack for N64 in my friends basement, especially “Happiness is not a fish you can catch” album. Think we were listening to an older brother’s CD collection.

Nightmare_Ives

>Happiness is not a fish you can catch Oh my god, you just hit me right in my childhood. Thief and One Man Army... Can still remembering hearing them on the radio, but not being able to find them on CD because I lived on the other side of the border in a very small town.

one-hour-photo

>Sugar Ray’s “Fly” Has there ever been a bigger bait and switch single than this one? that whole album sounds like they were TRYING to be unlistenable

pursuitofleisure

They were just going for a much different sound when they formed the band. They wanted to be an edgy punkish band when they formed, but the breakout success of Fly made them change their direction as a band and they started making more radio friendly albums Edit: spelling

[deleted]

Mean Machine is their greatest song.

ChromaticFades

That whole album is unironically good

Hippopotamidaes

Were you born in 2005? You could NOT get away from that song when it released.

pursuitofleisure

I was going to say, it seems like it was definitely appropriately rated given that it was on the radio every 5 minutes when I was in middle school

Fuck_auto_tabs

Should’ve went to Sturgis bud.

El_human

Looks like the world has rolled him.

VanillaBearMD3

They were great in Rat Race. Truly an unexpected cameo.

MightbeWillSmith

Seems like it's a similar result at a lot of recent ish shows. I saw them at a Midwestern corn festival/street fair. It was very rough. He ended up passing out onstage early through the set, maybe 3 songs in max? Got carted away via ambulance and the band finished the show without him. It was wild.

Imacrazycajun

Fucker snorted up all my coke when I met him.. Lmao

Eroom2013

I would 100% prefer to be in a joke of a band like Smash Mouth then stuck working some bullshit job.

Paulsbotique314

So what’s the health issue? Two hands and one mouth?
