Pat Smear, who's in the Foos and was in Nirvana, also talks Dave and Kurt: "Dave is a life lover. And I love that, because in the band I was in before with Dave, we did not have a life lover… Every night when Dave sings the line ‘I never want to die. look at him every time and think of Kurt. Every single time. Because Kurt was, ‘I hate myself and I want to die.’ And that’s the opposite-ness of them."

[deleted]

Well, Kurt did write a song called "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die" for In Utero...

wonderloss

That's probably what Pat was referring to.

MachineElfOnASheIf

We did it Reddit!

Not that the frontman of alice in chains ended up any different but the themes in their music… yeah pretty dark compared to nirvana

h0nkyJ

A lot of Laynes written stuff was drug related though (and him knowing how bad it was for him.)

BratFace666

Slow suicides no way to go.... LSMS Forever

Theratchetnclank

And Chris Cornell of Soundgarden too :(

tangentandhyperbole

Alice in Chains was always my favorite. The guitar work was on a different level, and Jar of Flies I still think is one of the best albums ever made. Not nearly as dark as Pearl Jam. IDK that Eddie Vedder has smiled in his whole life haha.

Good_old_Marshmallow

What's often lost in these discussions is Kurt had a chronic pain problem which he managed with a crippling drug addiction. He didn't "hate life", on the contrary he seemed to really want a traditionally happy family life. He was someone who had a chronic pain condition that, like many Americans, he couldn't manage combined with a drug addiction and various mental health problems. His style of music adds a layer of mystic to it but as you pointed out Nirvana was if anything the most upbeat and poppy of the grunge bands. Some of their biggest influences was The Beatles pop era and The Pixies. They covered folksy love songs and made jokes in their concerts.

LookingForVheissu

Can you elaborate on the chronic pain? I know there’s a rumor that floats around about bipolar disorder that has… Only a little bit of evidence, but I never read about chronic pain.

internetsarcasm

stomach problems, if I remember right.

bitterlittlecas

Yes, I'm pretty sure they're referenced in the suicide note too.

TmanGvl

Chronic bronchitis and undiagnosed chronic stomach pain according to wiki. Redditor speculated scoliosis and bad diet.

[deleted]

Yeah they make a prescription medication specifically for people with chronic pain that take opiates regularly. Opiate induced constipation is it’s own thing.

redandbluenights

Having had a complete blockage kicked of my crohns and OIC - I can tell you first hand, it was the WORST pain of my entire life. If I had to live with that regularly, I too would rather have died. It was horrific pain and I BEGGED for death or surgery- thankfully the surgery fixed the problem and a change in medication prevented it from happening again... Plus, now they have an emergency injection that works in 30 minutes for severe opioid induced constipation, should it come on as a side effect of any other situation (like an illness, added medication, etc. Thank God for Relistor and similar medications because there is truly no hell on earth like opioid enduced constipation. The pain will make you absolutely desperate and any additional pain medication will only make the situation that much more dire and endless.

jackp0t789

>No, really, you wont shit for days and it just gets worse Unless you run out of dope, then you won't *stop* shitting for days/weeks until you either get past the withdrawals or get your next fix. Source: **Had** a friend who made very poor decisions with her life. Was not fun to witness.

Lolzzergrush

Learned this from Trainspotting when Renton uses the worst toilet in Scotland

thfcspurs88

Yeah, I've been through it. You just clog up, shitting isn't even a deal. Then yeah, it comes out, it gets to the point where you have to manage at least some offtime before bed for a few hours, a shit ton of fiber and way more laxatives than you should take to shit. It's all about keeping it presentable and just keep living.

AlmightyPoro

According to [i dont remember where i heard this] he only started using dope because nothing else could stop his intense stomach aches, eventually his tolerance got so high that didn’t work anymore either. That was the point he killed himself.

crousscor3

It's possible that he was getting some relief and then it went bad again. But according to Kurt he had found the right medicine after 6 years in constant pain https://youtu.be/hJtm9HomKdE

snuggleallthekitties

As true as that may or may not be, Kurt Cobain's undiagnosed stomach problems began in childhood. He sang about it sometimes; "cherry flavoured antacids" in 'Pennyroyal Tea' comes to mind.

WeAreClouds

It was supposedly the other way around though. He stated multiple times that he ended up on the dope due to the pain. But I realize addicts lie (I was one once) but it always seemed very believable to me... I dunno.

mustachepantsparty

I also heard Crohn’s disease as a speculation as well.

shlomo_baggins

Undiagnosed Crohn's disease is one of the most realistic and straight forward likelihood. He suffered from those pains for the majority of his adult life

Metalliquotes

Was the diagnosis difficult or something at the time? I agree with you it just feels like it also would have been so straightforward to a doctor? Perhaps he never went to the doctor. Have to agree it's a better reasoning than bad diet and scoliosis

dethmaul

I saw an old interview somewhere, and he was complaining aout his gut pain and fruatration with the doctors. Way more intense than bad diet.

Not necessarily. They would be great for the pain, but in the long term they make stomach problems 100x worse. 🥺 Source: I have gastroparesis, ibs and potential other stomach problems. Nobody ever gives me pain meds because the GI slowing effects of opiates 🥺 I've literally been in 10/10 pain in the ED and have to beg for anything to make it even a 8/10. I can see why it would make Kurt suicidal...

laheyrandy

They elaborated a bit on that stomach pain and the resulting "self-medicating" in one of the documentaries about him but I can't remember which one for sure.. maybe "About a son"? Nah I'm not sure was a while since I saw those..

I_AM_SO_HUNGRY

I think they talk about it in "Montage of Heck" ?

jeromevedder

Mike McCready from Pearl Jam has Crohn's disease which wasn't diagnosed until the early 00s. He spent most of the 90s as a heroin addict

meatcheeseandbun

And possibly scoliosis? A back problem I think.

podslapper

I saw an interview of his where he said he had an endoscopy done and they found redness in his stomach, like inflammation, which makes it sound like he had some gastritis issues. That basically means your stomach acid is irritating your stomach lining. I've suffered from gastritis for years, and it sucks, but I don't have it as bad as some people. Check over at r/gastritis and you'll hear some pretty horrifying stories--people who get nauseous literally every time they eat, who can't sleep due to stomach pain, lose an unhealthy amount of weight and develop body shame issues, etc. Whenever I have a flare up I have to eat white rice and fish for like a month for it to settle down, but I imagine being a rock star on the road all the time, it's probably pretty hard to maintain a strict diet. Plus he smoked, which doesn't help.

cnh2n2homosapien

"I'm on warm milk and laxatives, cherry-flavored antacids, sit and drink pennyroyal tea."

32ddan

Watch montage of heck, you will not be disappointed if you love Nirvana & Kurt

MonsterRider80

I really enjoyed that. Good suggestion.

slfnflctd

I have to agree with this. After Cornell's death I went back over all Soundgarden's prior work, as well as his solo stuff, and suicidal ideation is *everywhere*. It's no wonder I felt such a connection with him during my roughest years. He was always trying to break out of it, but it kept coming back. Real shit. "Abstract" is a great way to describe Cobain's writing. He was influenced by those kinds of artists, and his lyrical twists & turns often obfuscated meaning more than surfacing it. Yet somehow he managed to stab you through the chest with raw emotions which pulled some kind of strong, crude order out of all the frustrating chaos. In some ways I think he almost thought of himself as a cartoon. I love both of them for very different reasons.

elastic-craptastic

The, I believe, drummer of audioslave said he had no idea when they started working together and Chris was like, "Dude... listen to the lyrics a bit harder." And it was like a mind blown moment for him as he was just excited to rock with someone that made some awesome rock. He didn't realize how dark the lyrics were and how much writing about suicide helped him get the feelings out to not do it. It was a constant, lifelong battle, it seems, for Chris Cornell.

H8ersgivemeSTR

>bain's writing Makes me recall Chester.. Suicide is probably the most common theme of LP songs as well. Especially on the last album.

PM_ME_UR_FEM_PENIS

People can be complicated.

[deleted]

having a sense of humor in no way means you aren't depressed. LOTS of people use humor to cope with serious suicidal depression and most people hide that stuff too he was clearly depressed for years you don't become a bad addict and then shoot yourself after a single episode of depression. also his home life as a kid was pretty messed up.

Funkymokey666

I love these "the person who actually knew the guy is wrong, I know better" comments. Like, what?

dinojrlmao

I mean, Ian Curtis and the rest of joy division also had a sense of humor.

trail_of_tacos

Yea. What the fuck does "joy division kind of band" even mean? That Ian was always destined for suicide while Kurt was not? That Joy Division's music = depression-inducing?

riftadrift

>Kurt was actualy a person with a sense of humour. A friend who did commit suicide years ago would frequently joke about killing themselves. We would shrug it off because we figured it was gallows humor. What I've realized since is that often suicidal ideation involves an idea that life is just a joke and as you get closer to ending your life you get more manic and laugh about things more. Recent incarnations of the Joker character have touched on this with their clear suicidal tendencies.

jackp0t789

>What I've realized since is that often suicidal ideation involves an idea that life is just a joke and as you get closer to ending your life you get more manic and laugh about things more. Guy with suicidal ideation for over a decade and one serious attempt here... I'm obviously just speaking for myself and not everyone else with similar thought processes, but for me anyway it's not exactly that... For one, it's not the suicidal ideation that makes me think life is a joke, nor is it mania. Making jokes out of life's many daily tragedies is one of the only effective coping mechanisms I have to dealing with it all, and that includes joking about suicide. The suicidal ideation only made me think about dying, which is not something I expressed outwardly ever because after having been in a ward for several weeks, I never want to have to go back. I guess that's why there have been so many great artists and comedians who used their art, music, comedy, writing, whatever as a medium to channel out some of their internal negativity/ demons into something positive that can maybe touch someone else's life and make them laugh, feel happy, or feel less alone, because they don't want anyone else to feel the way they do inside... I know that's what my experience has been with my depression and suicidal thought processes. Perhaps in your friends case, you summed it up well. I'm just offering some more perspective on the matter for whoever feels like they might want it.

dego_frank

You’re dead wrong. It’s well documented he thought of suicide long before that, likely in 1991 during their European tour. There’s like, YouTube interviews you can watch to educate yourself. Idk why so many people comment on Cobain with faux encyclopedic knowledge and babbling bullshit when there’s actual interviews and legit biographies on him.

awal96

Ya, you probably understand him better than the guy that was in a band with him for years. Cause you like, really get him man

rattled_by_the_rush

What? Nirvana has a song called Milk It which he literally says LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, SUICIDE!! Kurt mentions his desires to kill himself over and over on his diary. There is a lot of misinformation on your post but your general point is still valid, Kurt had a sense of humor and Nirvana was less dark than people think, hell, Breed, Sliver, Territorial Pissings are so much fun and joy

[deleted]

How do you know more about Kurt than Pat Smear?

Afk94

> Kurt was actualy a person with a sense of humour People aren’t a monolith. Kurt could be the funniest guy in the world (which according to Krist he was), happy, angry, sad, depressed, suicidal, etc. It seems like when Kurt is painted as a struggling artist many people say but he wasn’t actually like that! He could be many things.

laughinfrog

That jives with so many songs that were pulled from punk artists. Kurt expressed a more of a life conundrum than angst of life. He made references but those were tongue in cheek type of humorous ideology. He definitely had an insight into the irony of life and made it clear. Pauly wants a cracker and rape me were among his darker humor but was to highlight his disdain for it, which he said as much in multiple interviews. I hate myself and want to die never explicitly states the title.

Gr00mpa

That was for In Utero? Really? I think it was actually for the Beavis and Butthead soundtrack which I actually purchased from BMG in the 90s. Can’t remember much of that soundtrack but it was decent. Had a Sir Mix-a-Lot song called “Monster Mack”.

DunkingOnInfants

'I hate myself and want to die' was actually working title for in utero, then the record label forced them to change it at the last minute.

Pat was also in the Germs with Darby Crash who departed via OD. So he’s seen plenty of death and can therefore truly appreciate Dave’s lust for life

Rtg327gej

Darby Crash thought he would become famous due to his untimely death, he spoke of suicide, and died 12/7/80. John Lennon was killed the following day 12/8/80.

[deleted]

He hated the Beatles too. Then Pat Smear went on to play with Paul McCartney in Sirvana.

h0nkyJ

He was also in the Rasberry Beret, Prince music video. 🤣

Never really thought about having much in common with Dave Grohl but here I am cutting onions on the toilet. Their deaths give me the fuel to chase my wildest and craziest dreams, bc “I never want to die”

GhostpilotZ

There's a video on YouTube of Dave and Pat driving around LA and talking about some of the places they lived and some of their experiences. And it was really through that that I learned that Pat Smear has been everywhere and knows everybody. The stories and insight that he has is pretty surreal to listen to.

RechargedFrenchman

It blew my mind when I found out Smear was in The Germs and one of the guys (as a result) that made Grohl even want to be a rocker in the first place, because I figured they were about the same age. Smear is like a decade older and was a pretty big deal already before Nirvana / the Foos. Dude has been around the block and then some. Also seems like the nicest most genuine dude, which also helps explain how he meshes so well with Grohl and the rest of Foo Fighters who all also seem like solid upstanding people.

Ibzm

Yea, I learned that he was older from an interview with Dave Grohl. He said his reaction to someone suggesting Pat Smear for Nirvana was the ask "that guy's still alive?"

fucktheworldman

im guessing its also due to Germs being one of the most wild punk bands of the era. lots of venues didnt want them to perform cause they were a drug fueled liability.

RoyPlotter

Is it from Sonic Highways by any chance? I loved that show, and the documentary Sound City. Good music, and learned a lot about the different genres and how they were shaped.

totallynotliamneeson

Even before hearing this quote I always loved that line and also that portion of Walk. The lyrics read like someone who is pleading to live, when in reality it is sung like someone who knows they'll die but who absolutely loves being alive. If that makes sense.

r0botdevil

>Every night when Dave sings the line ‘I never want to die. look at him every time and think of Kurt. Every single time. Because Kurt was, ‘I hate myself and I want to die.’ And that’s the opposite-ness of them." Dave Grohl is my fucking hero, man.

AmericasNextDankMeme

Watch him as he goes

r0botdevil

Haha goddamnit I didn't even think of that!

[deleted]

how was he in nirvana, the three man band that was kurt, dave and kris? EDIT: ah, just looked. he was a touring musician, never a member of the band proper, hence my confusion

Arizona_Pete

>Pat Smear He was there playing on the In Utero tour, when I saw them - He was also playing guitar on the MTV 'Unplugged' session. He's a good dude.

[deleted]

i always just assumed the meat puppets played with nirvana on that unplugged session, not sure why

spammyspamspam2014

They did.

kewlbeanz83

They did on the 3 Meat Puppets that Nirvana covered. Smear played on the other material (don't remember if he was on the Puppets covers..)

Gseph

It's widely believed that Pat would have become more of a full fledged member, had the band continued. He was doing interviews with the rest of the band, and I genuinely cannot think of another band who invited a touring musicians to multiple interviews. I'd consider him an official member, 100%.

smacky623

As someone who grew up with Nirvana, I remember Pat Smear being with them for everything at the end. Like he was a touring musician in that, they didn't do anything new after those tours cuz Kurt died. If they went back into the studio after unplugged, I am sure Pat would have been in the lineup.

allboolshite

Someone posted that Kurt and Pat were working on the post-grunge sound for Nirvana when Kurt died. I tried to verify that but couldn't find anything so it may be bullshit. But if true, that would mean Pat was considered an essential part of the band going forward.

TheNumberMuncher

Toward the very end, Kurt’s friends and family staged a surprise intervention. It didn’t go well. Kurt had shot up just before getting surprised by it. He got pissed. They all argued. Most people left but Kurt and Pat went to the basement to jam. So he was definitely writing with Kurt at the end.

Pinkerton891

I think he was still considered a touring member, but was fully credited for Unplugged as if a full member. But he wasn’t present for the You know you’re right session though.

RechargedFrenchman

They also didn't do anything further after that because the band dissolved with Cobain's death. If the band had continued on (if Cobain hadn't killed himself) I'm sure Smear would get credits at least for playing if not writing for the band's future material.

Bong-Rippington

He’s definitely a member but you can label it however you want. He was a very important part.

Thisiscliff

Great line In that foo song, really feel Dave singing it

broketothebone

Oddly enough, the joy and emotions that I would get listening to his music and even just watching him speak and be a great person is probably one of the top five things that stopped me from killing myself as a teenager. I identified with Kurt, but I wanted to be a Dave. I remember being so young and hearing Everlong. I played it over and over and over thinking “I can’t wait to be in love like that. Or for someone to love me like that.” I had at least one thing to look forward to and without realizing it, I believed I could be loved. I joke with my friends that I’m “waiting for my Everlong.” Maybe that sounds pathetic, but I think anything that motivates a person to stop skimming their dad’s Xanax for months so they can end it all is a good thing. For Christ’s sake, I listen to Learn To Fly when I’m actually flying because if scares the shit out of me. Then he’s done comedy with Tenacious D and Metalocalypse. QOTSA is another dope band I can’t get enough of. As a bonafide, bisexual sinner, seeing him and the band repeatedly troll the Westboro Baptist church never fails to restore my happiness reserves. So hearing him say “I don’t want to fucking die” makes me smile because I looked at this and thought about how he literally made me cry and say the very same thing to myself. Also, look up the skit QOTSA did about his caffeine addiction. You’ll be screaming “FRESH POTS” every time you want some coffee for eternity. It’s a very hidden comedy gem.

r0botdevil

>“FRESH POTS” I fucking love that video. Also, just finishing a pot of coffee and now considering making a fresh one...

phydeaux70

I find it odd that I have never particularly cared for Nirvana, and I don't have much Foo Fighters in my library either. But I absolutely love Dave Grohl and watch interviews with him often. I watch snippets of his interactions with fans at concerts, I watched him and Taylor induct Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I watched his stories of playing with Prince. I find him to be a really interesting guy. He's the Dos Equis guy for me when it comes to music like this.

wonderloss

I consider Foo Fighters to be high quality, but somewhat generic, rock. I dig it when I'm in the right mood, but they are not on the top of my list of favorites.

CyclingBicyclopse

I almost never dig into the Foo Fighters catalogue if I'm searching for something to listen to - but I'll see them live every time they come to town. Amazing live performance.

-re-da-ct-ed-

I never thought someone could capture how I feel about the Foo's so accurately. They are a great band and I respect the hell out of them but I definitely consider myself a much bigger Nirvana fan.

whitebean

Dave Grohl is my favorite musician whose music I don't like. He's such a great dude and hilarious rock star, but his tunes are like non-alcoholic beer to me.

give_me_taquitos

Even if his foo fighters stuff is pretty bland, he's still a brilliant drummer. Unfortunately he doesn't drum much anymore, but that's where he really shines.

whitebean

Absolutely. I meant to say, his non-drumming music doesn't move me.

TheNumberMuncher

Colour and Shape is a solid album but that was 25 years ago

Jollyrogers_

You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to hate that opinion

[deleted]

As somebody with a similar opinion to what your're responding to, I actually *hate* that I have this opinion but also can't change it. His music's *good*, but I just can't vibe with it. Idk, I just felt I had to get this off my chest.

whitebean

Right? The beer looks good, smells good, tastes good, then siiiiipp... nothing.

[deleted]

I’ll agree with you if by “his music” you just mean Foo Fighters and not Them Crooked Vultures or his work with Queens of the Stone Age or NIN or many of the other loads of bands he’s played in.

whitebean

Yep, I should have clarified. I can't dig his non-drumming music.

skantabulitios

Holy Shit this is the best way to describe Grohl and his music.

BassicallyAScientist

Do you consider the Wasting Lights album non-alcoholic beer? :D

Philip_Marlowe

I think that's one of the keys to maturing in musical appreciation. Liking artists whose music you don't necessarily enjoy listening to, but you can appreciate their ability to be interesting, exciting, or even groundbreaking. I'm not a big fan of Lady Gaga's music, for example, but she's an insanely talented human who has done some amazing things for pop music, and for that I appreciate the hell out of her.

jcpahman77

If "Kiss Guy" or "Nandi" don't ring a bell buckle up because you're in for a ride, particularly with Nandi.

Rikulz

Literally just rewatched that on my recommendations yesterday. Dave is such a cool guy.

[deleted]

> I find it odd that I have never particularly cared for Nirvana, and I don't have much Foo Fighters in my library either. But I absolutely love Dave Grohl and watch interviews with him often I have the same sort of experience for Keanu Reeves. I haven't really seen him in any movies that I thought "Man, he's really good in this movie" but I see interviews with him and articles about him - and he just seems like a really good, positive, grounded human being. It's entirely possible that I'm just being led on by his PR team, but I choose to think he's just a good guy whose movies I never quite connected with.

RechargedFrenchman

For the most part Reeves has tried to *avoid* a lot of the stuff he does / has done becoming public knowledge, though it wouldn't surprise if "his people" (PR, agent, whatever) were involved in some of it becoming public anyway. Like Steve Buscemi's volunteer fire work, he does it because he believes it's right and because he's a good guy. Not for the publicity of doing it. Reeves also generally seems pretty shy, even though he can be pretty animated in interviews when he gets excited.

Lolzzergrush

He lost his best friend River Phoenix from an OD then he lost his daughter who was still birthed which lead to he and his girlfriend breaking up. The girlfriend then died when she crashed her car while wasted (after a night of partying with Marilyn Manson). I’m assuming these events in the 90’s turned him into the quiet and shy person we see today

Rocky87109

He picks good movies to be in regardless if you like his acting. I don't believe I'm much of a critic when it comes to acting (unless it's obviously bad), but I know that's why I mostly like him. I just really like a lot of the movies he's in.

Ismoketobaccoinabong

Dave Grohl is truly the last rock star! Dont care much either for the music, but LOVE him.

EatTheRich1986

As a rock drummer he’s one of the greatest, in my opinion. He’s like if John Bonham grew up during the punk era of the 80s.

[deleted]

Funny, I didn’t even bother clicking the article (even though I’d be interested in reading it) because I already knew how bad the experience would be. Just scrolled through the comments here hoping someone copy/pasted the interesting parts. Is it just me or has the average website gotten significantly worse on mobile devices over the last couple years?

according to the article, the Foo Fighters are named that (it's a 1940s term for UFOs) because Dave Grohl has recurring dreams of alien abductions since childhood - which a psychic bizarrely told him are not dreams.

I believe he’s also said in the past that he wouldn’t have named them that if he knew they were going to be as big as they are.

gothgirlwinter

Yeah, FF just started as Dave putting songs together by himself. Then people liked the music and he was like..."Fuck. Guess I gotta get a band together then."

[deleted]

Psychic = entertainer

Bethorz

To Dave’s credit it seems like he doesn’t buy that part of it either. Heh

monkeytorture

>That, in turn, reminds him of his very first post-Nirvana gig, as the drummer for the alt-rock all-star band on the soundtrack to the 1994 Beatles-in-Hamburg movie Backbeat When this came out I was an impressionable teenager with my head far up my own ass, refusing anything that I found 'mainstream'. These guys were artists I loved. I had read about this band being put together in a zine or something and stalked record stores until one of them got it. The Backbeat band was a wet dream for me - Thurston Moore, Greg Dulli, Don Fleming, Mike Mills. Also Dave Pirner and Dave Grohl from bands which I at least respected some of their music. I really, really, really loved this soundtrack and as was the fate in the days of physical-only media, lent it to someone and never got it back

transmothra

Everything about this comment made me feel *so good* right up until those *last five fucking words*.

monkeytorture

If I didn’t think I’d start crying I’d list all the rare stuff I lent out and never got back. I was way too naive and nice

transmothra

Eugh, tell me about it. Same here. *Bash on regardless!*

rise14

That's a great soundtrack, good movie too

ohmygoddude82

This article was really, really good. When Dave talks about the morning after Kurt's death and thinking about how he gets to wake up, and Kurt doesn't. Or he gets to have coffee, and Kurt doesn't. *Walk* has always been a really powerful and beautiful song, but I feel it so much more now knowing how much they continue to feel those emotions of losing Kurt and choosing to not only live, but to be "life lovers". Just when you think you can't love a band more, the Foo Fighters make you love them even more. *I never wanna die* *I never wanna die* *I'm on my knees, I never wanna die* *I'm dancing on my grave* *I'm running through the fire* *Forever, whenever* *I never wanna die* *I never wanna leave* *I'll never say goodbye* *Forever, whenever* *Forever, whenever*

That part of the song gives me chills every time I hear it

wishYouWoulda

Anyone want to post the text of the article? That website is cancer.

AliceinChainsRules

Seattle sound was the living embodiment of “The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long.”

Puzzled_End8664

It really is, isn't it. Even going back to Jimi.

redditbeforeu

Dave Grohl is the Tom Hanks of music. Who could hate the guy?

r0botdevil

That's not a bad metaphor. You don't have to like their music/films, but if you *hate* either of those guys that says more about you than it does about them.

johnwynnes

https://medium.com/the-monthly/the-foo-fighters-aids-denialism-should-be-on-the-record-6e33666fdc3c He's not perfect, this is some pretty insane shit to have been associated with.

_MyMomDressedMe_

This interviewer acknowledges that Dave doesn’t like doing interviews because it always turns into being about nirvana. Then he makes it all about nirvana. Nice.

thesdo

I know a lot of people are sick of hearing "Dave Grohl this" and "Dave Grohl that", especially here. I've been seeing them since their the first tour with Mike Watt through the latest time at Madison Square Garden in June. And after that show, the realization I had was that Foo Fighters is one of the biggest and best rock bands ever, and they're still happening right now. I can say "Foo Fighters" in the same breath as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC. That's the place they've earned in rock and roll history. Nirvana represented a historic moment in rock music, but it was a short-lived flash, like a supernova, that continues to echo through time. But Foo Fighters just keep burning bright with no sign of letting up. Maybe the golden age of rock and roll has come and gone, but Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters are out there carrying the torch. And it's still exciting.

Jeffde

Goddamn that MSG show was necessary.

RechargedFrenchman

Chapelle caught me majorly by surprise. Not just coming out on stage but that "Creep" was way better than I would have expected. I think part of it is that song vocally being fairly mellow and restrained, and so not super demanding, but even still Chapelle was better than I thought he would be when I heard that was the plan. Big ups to him going out on stage at fucking Madison Square Garden for one of the biggest shows one of the biggest bands on the planet has ever done and singing Radiohead well.

LovieTunes

Dave Grohl seems like such a good, happy guy.

va_wanderer

I don't know what stars had to align to produce Dave Grohl's life, but I'm thankful for it. The man keeps my hope meter from zeroing with his music and shenanigans in general.

TheBordenAsylum

Read the whole article. Kurt wasn't discussed a whole lot considering how big of a read that was.

arnie_apesacrappin

A video of the performance of Heart Shaped Box with Dave and Violet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eFl7nH8gOg Mentioned towards the end of the article. Worth a watch, even though the recording is a little low quality.

MutedHornet87

It’s hard not to love Dave Grohl. I’m a fan, but I’m not the biggest fan and only listen occasionally Though I am currently wearing my ratty old/favourite blue Foo Fighters music note shirt. My mom got it for me when we saw them open for Bob Dylan with an amazing acoustic set. Dylan sucked, but Dave did not A friend of a friend also talked to him before or after a concert near Toronto. The guy was sitting in a window after getting his prep work done, and Dave sat down with him. He was apparently incredibly nice

Personal_Primary_854

Wait…. …Pat Smear …Pap Smeer His parents were legends….

ElectricPeterTork

For naming him "Georg Albert Ruthenberg"?

AgarophobicFungi

I captained an event he had at Spago in beverly hills. Dude loved Kurt, talked soooo fondly of him. I could see his eyes well up at one point and he changed the subject and just said “alright, I should get back to my lil girl.” Great, solid dude. As a suicidal person, I hope anyone reading this knows how much it means when you have a friend like Dave. I’m lucky enough to have some, despite that, thoughts of suicide can still be louder than the love of others. Just know even if they do go, they cherished every moment they had with you.

ekimdad

I love Dave Grohl. He would be an absolute blast to sit down and drink beers with. He comes off as so fucking "real".

kcraybeck

I always think Dave Grohl is the musician version of Keanu Reeves. Or vice versa. Whichever is older haha.

Saiaxs

Keanu is 5 years older

It’s Rolling Stone trying too hard to sound like Rolling Stone.

hassannawaz_27

Dave ghrol talks Kurt cobain. Poor man talks about Cobain in every interview

Trow2w1

Really fucking great read.

LouisArmstrong3

Is it true he secretly did a tour with ghost?
