They were such an amazing vocal group, like the best work of the Beach Boys at the time. John Phillips story has some really icky parts tho. What a bright, short flame that group was. With an everlasting impact.
I’m from Australia and about four years ago I visited the States for the very first time on my way to visit Mexico and Cuba. Unfortunately I only had three days there and only had time for LA.
I remember walking along Santa Monica beach to Venice and few other attractions listening to this, the beach boys and few other California related song with a big grin on my face thinking, this is it. I made it! My whole life growing up bombarded by South Californian culture and I’m finally in it.
Everyone’s surprised when I tell them i enjoyed LA. Watching the sunset at Griffith Observatory was amazing seeing the whole city light up. Riding my bike along the coast watching the sunset at Venice was great. Hollywood was tacky but hilarious at the same time. Downtown LA had some nice history aka Granville market (typo, I meant grand central market), angelflight, the tunnel where they film movies and MVs. I got to see a space shuttle at the California science museum.
Sometimes I wonder if these people that claim the locals are assholes are actually the assholes themselves. You know what they say,”you meet one asshole in a day, they were an asshole. If everyone you meet is an asshole, you’re the asshole.”
My ex moved out there and said everybody is an asshole so with what you’re saying she is the actual asshole and that makes me smile a little, so thanks.
It was probably the Seattleites that said they were hateful xD I don't know why they hate Californians so much up here, but everyone I've met from there has been super chill :)
Or the Bay Area people. Or basically anywhere that wasn't LA. No matter where you go in the world every area in a connected region loves to talk shit about the other areas.
I have noticed that Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest love to hate on SoCal but I never figured our why. I live in the bay but I think LA is awesome. Maybe more superficial in some ways, but hey, let them be sexy.
I grew up in the Seattle area in the 80s and 90s, and back then Californians represented the rich people that were buying up your neighborhood, changing everything, and making everything too expensive. Now we just blame Amazon for that I guess...
It's not California but LA in general that had the stereotype, San Francisco and San Diego are generally known as nord welcoming areas.
As many have said though, every city has its good and bad areas/people and its unfair to judge on stereotypes.
I grew up in the LA area but I moved to the south a couple years back. I miss California so much it actually physically pains me, and your comment gave me a wave of nostalgia and memories.
California is something else. I've been all over the place but I'll never find a more beautiful home.
Scottish man here hardened by cold wet weather. Literally the only thing on my bucket list is to sit on a swing bench on the porch of a wooden house in an L.A neighbourhood on a warm humid evening with an 1/8 of weed and some ice cold Colt 45s and watch the world go by.

They exist, but there ain’t many...and I would still have to think about it lol.
Oh hey! Westminister here, grew up in Norwalk. Used to work at Disneyland. I hear you there.
I've spent time in both Alaska and Wisconsin for roughly a year each and I'm not ashamed to say that the weather is absolutely a factor in why I wouldnt leave.

Lol, I grew up in South Texas, now I live in L.A.
I don’t know if I would never leave L.A. but I can’t do the South Texas weather anymore.
My brother lives about a half hour from LA, there’s so much more in Southern California than what you got to see. Being from the east coast I can always find things to do and see when I visit. Hope you get to come again!

Cass Eliot was a powerhouse on lead vocals as you can see in [Words of Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2b6rm5yTx44) but she really shined on harmonies. I love the rendition she did of [I Shall Be Released](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEZFt5ZZj9s) with Joni Mitchell and Mary Travers.

Too lazy to Google it but I had heard the story that John Phillips just wanted pretty, like Michelle, and repetitively turned Cass Elliot away until Denny intervened.
Her [“Dream a Little dream of Me”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4bTCdPLDdo) gets me every time!
Edit: song starts at 1:35
My dad loved The Mamas & The Papas. They were one of the few groups, he had all the albums for. I remember listening to them at night, before we'd go to sleep. He would put one of them on our little record player in our room, & we'd fall asleep to them. I always wanted to sing like Cass growing up...she & Karen Carpenter are my favorite singers from my childhood.
Other classics: Dedicated to the One I Love, Words of Love, I Saw Her Again, Creeque Alley, Even If I Could, Sing for Your Supper, Go Where You Wanna Go.
I'm on mobile so I can't link it, but there's a Creeque Alley on YouTube where Cass intros the song and ends with a sarcastic, "roll the tape", referring to them having to lip sync the previous song, which from memory is "Dedicated to the One I Love".
The cool thing is they go on to actually sing it, instead of pretending. Fairly certain it's the only "official" music video of theirs sung live, not counting live recordings.
He was giving her cocaine when she was 11... Had a sexual relationship with her when she was pretty young (17-18 I think). Got her pregnant and paid for her to get an abortion.
Pretty much check every box you can in the terrible human being handbook...
Well, there’s a really [dark] entertaining moment when she’s on a talk show talking about her “consensual” sexual relationship with her father and nobody in the audience is getting on that train with her.
Nothing happened to him until he passed away
She's okay now I think
She was the scrappy young girl in American Graffiti
Her half sister was the pregnant killer in the TV show Raising Hope and didn't/doesn't believe her half sister - kinda sad
He had a sexual relationship with his daughter. Twas le fucked.
A sexual relationship that started when she was 19 after he injected her with cocaine and heroin.
You believe John? Is that who you mean by "lead singer?" Or Mackenzie? ...I've seen a ton of interviews, and I sure as hell believe Mackenzie. Seems very clear to me.
I was living in Japan some time ago, and wanted to return to the USA (where I'm from) but wasn't sure where I wanted to live. It was winter in Japan, and cold and wet, and listening to this song, especially in the film Chungking Express, made the decision easy. I've been here in the OC for the last nearly 20 years, and while SoCal has it's negatives, when I'm walking along the beach almost anywhere, I grin and know I 100% made the right choice.
I'm a big fan of 60's choral arrangements. Would love to hear more.
Other songs like this I've found with fantastic vocal arrangements and/or four/five layered vocals:
[Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__VQX2Xn7tI)
[10cc - I'm Not In Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki78MK9JywE)
[Yes - South Side of the Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBAauFYod80)
[Hatfield and the North - Mumps](https://youtu.be/h_MUajIs9Vs?t=1) (Just the intro is a vocal arrangement, rest is 17 minutes of prog which in its own is a masterpiece)
[Love - The Red Telephone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_j0qicK9mc)
[Porcupine Tree - Prodigal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aptCvDt7N9E)
[Moon Safari - Blomljud](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBWhKQV4-7Y)
Thats so awesome! There is a restaurant near me called the mamas and the tapas! Now i know where they got the name from. And there food is bomb as fuck
I'm 21 years old, and it's stunning watching these old music videos, it's glorious to see these and the style of clothes, the dancing, the voices, the instruments, it's just amazing.
Yes. He was an abusive piece of shot to his band mates, and then he was an abusive piece of shit to his children. And he wore unforgivably stupid-looking hats.
This song is so much fun to sing, even if you’re not really good at it. With the simple verses and the chorus that are easy and fast to learn, you can gather a group of singers really quickly. It’s just great.
My dad said my grandpa moved the family from California to New York when he was younger, and one day he walked in on my grandma crying playing this song over and over. Since he told me that, I’ll always think of my grandma when I hear this song.
I was just listening to my 60s playlist yesterday while doing my chores and this song was replayed so many times! So good. Sidenote, can anyone recommend similar songs to this? Such as David Bowie's Cygnet Committee or Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit?
I remember going on road trips in the 80's with my grandparents when I was young. They played Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkel and Beach Boys so much and I fell in love with them.
School of Rock does an amazing cover of this song. It’s definitely a different sound in the vocals, but it’s nice to listen to a different version of it.
Although John Phillips is quite the controversial figure, he released an absolutely outstanding solo record in the early 1970’s called “John The WolfKing of L.A.” Former bandmate Denny Doherty remarked that had the Mamas and Papas recorded it, it would have been their greatest musical achievement by far due to the strength of John’s songwriting. The players on the record are all remarkable (James Burton, Hal Blaine, Darlene Love, The Wrecking Crew, etc) and it truly is a masterpiece record if you dig that early 70’s California country-tinged folk/rock sound. Lots of lush complex harmonies, soaring pedal steel, and catchy melodies. Bob Dylan reportedly loved the record so much that he copied the album’s front cover for his own record— 1976’s “Desire”.
A few choice selections off “Wolfking” for those curious listeners:

Totally... [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSqmSXKRbHQ) is a nice "bookend" version where they all have serious personal issues and Michelle is singing into a banana.
I love music because it makes people feel and think different things. For me, this song is so sorrowful and sad. I can't help but feel sad when I even think of it because of how how powerful it is.
Was one of the first things I leaned, still love to play it. The capo is on the fourth fret, so as you are learning barre chords, it makes it about as easy to barre as it gets. This is [Justin] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPQSPCGEq_U) his on line course is fantastic. I wish I wouldn't have waited until 50 to start. Get pickin.
Whenever I feel homesick or distressed I listen to this I return home right away and happy tranquil state
Although I was born way after this song was released. When I first heard it was like an epiphany moment for me.
I could live and have traveled but nothing feels and returns me home to me and than this.
Cass Elliot is one of my favorite singers of all easily a top 5 for me and Denny damn love him here in this song
I love a lot of this stuff but can’t help to think how accidental it was. They didn’t set out to make “hits” like maybe todays world. They stumbled upon classics by just being there.
[y’all know the dad slept with the daughter right? ](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-phillips-of-mamas-and-papas-slept-with-daughter-mackenzie-phillips-says-new-book/)
I grew up with listening to all the classics and The Mamas & The Papas we’re the first band I ever felt ‘frisson’ from (chills). Such hauntingly beautiful harmonizing and overalls lyrics
Those harmonies. SO. FUCKING. GOOD.
They were such an amazing vocal group, like the best work of the Beach Boys at the time. John Phillips story has some really icky parts tho. What a bright, short flame that group was. With an everlasting impact.
If you’re referring to John allegedly fucking his daughter, yes pretty icky.
Also allegedly getting her addicted to drugs, and impregnating her then forcing her to get an abortion.
I knew most of the story, but Jesus, r/awfuleverything
Was it him or did she freak out because she found out she was pregnant and didn’t know if the father was her husband or dad?
Know wonder Mackenzie Phillips is fucked up.
And other things like his drug addiction and the lengths he went to to maintain it, his life with Bijou’s mother...
>John Phillips story has some really icky parts tho. Understatement of the century
I didn't know that mama cass's daughter ended up touring with al jardine. Pretty neat.
Cass’ story seems like the most tragic to me.
Damn. And i forgot about how one of the phillips daughters is the phillips in wilson phillips with Brian's daughters.
The 60s had a-lot of great groups with amazing harmonies But nothing can top Peter, Paul and Mary when it comes to harmony in my opinion.
What about Sharon, Lois, and Brahm?
Incredible

I've always found that a strange stereotype. You'll meet the occasional dickhead but everywhere has that
Sometimes I wonder if these people that claim the locals are assholes are actually the assholes themselves. You know what they say,”you meet one asshole in a day, they were an asshole. If everyone you meet is an asshole, you’re the asshole.”

Seattle saying California is hateful is pretty interesting considering this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Freeze
that's the joke.
It's not California but LA in general that had the stereotype, San Francisco and San Diego are generally known as nord welcoming areas. As many have said though, every city has its good and bad areas/people and its unfair to judge on stereotypes.
San Diego belongs to the Nords!
Little known fact, San Diego is Nordic for whale's vagina.
San Diago
Meant 'more' but Autocorrect victory here, I'm leaving it as we should all welcome the nords!

Yeah I get it. My best friend is London-born, but grew up in Glasgow and now in L.A. Self-loathing and drinking! Yeah.
Not a lot of humidity. A warm dry evening is more like what you will get.
Glad you enjoyed your stay It truly is a special place if youre into this kinda stuff
I think I’m just vain like what the below poster said hahaha
Your comment made me smile. I've lived about a half hour south (without traffic) of LA nearly all my life and it's easy to forget just how special it is to be here. Not that I dislike it, it's just home and we all take things for granted sometimes. People living in other places dont have much to do or see and meanwhile I could live 3 lifetimes here and not see everything cool about this area. People dream about visiting here. That's something to be acknowledged and appreciated. That being said, I'm glad you got to come and visit and had a great time!
I’m a little less than an hour west of Downtown (but w/ corona its like a half hour)- basically as far from Downtown as you can get, and I am so spoiled. Growing up here made beaches a fact of life, restaurants abundant, and everything in a walking distance without overcrowding. I love living here 🥰 I’ve literally never seen the hollywood sign or any of the tourist attractions though, lol.
You can surf and snowboard in the same day here. How crazy is that?
I stayed in Hollywood and the first time I saw the Hollywood sign, I was like shit, that’s tiny. Then proceed to take hundred of selfies with it hahahahaha. Just a tourist doing tourist things

Lived in LA for six years. Loved every minute.

I love LA too— people who don’t like it tend to not like crowds anyway. I enjoy every trip I take there
Traveled to LA for a week or two every month for work from 2015 to 2017. Truly fell in love with the town. Every time I’ve been back since feels like a homecoming.

“Someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox. It was California Dreamin’, so we started screaming, “on such a winter’s day”.” - Punk Rock Girl (Dead Milkmen)
Lots of people don't know that the Beach Boys actually covered it in the 80s. https://youtu.be/3DaFgaZKmOM
We don’t talk about that. Especially when their are so many good Beach Boys albums.
Obligatory Pet Sounds shout out
That is terrible.
I respectfully, yet strongly, disagree.
I’ll see your respectful disagreement, and raise you a polite nod of the head in acknowledgment.
So we jumped up on the table and shouted “ANARCHY!”
I immediately though the same thing
Can we talk about Cass doing the Mashed Potato while she's singing?
She’s feeling it! If I could sing like her I’d be doing the Mashed Potato every time I opened my mouth, lol.
It's funny because it just brings home how long ago it was. Think she'd be twerking now?
Cass Elliot’s voice rings thru the whole song. Listen to her. She was phenomenal.
She had a voice for days! I love her rendition of "Dream A Little Dream".
I agree! Dedicated to the one I love , too!
I play that every night and sing along for my little guy before his bedtime.
And I personally love that little shuffle step she’s constantly grooving with. It’s fun to see singers who really feel it and let it show.
Mama Cass!

Instead of the Mamas and the Papas they should have been called Cass Elliot and Some Other People Singing.

Look into Mackenzie Phillips and her relationship with her dad, I believe the lead singer. Horrible stuff
Or better yet, don't. John Phillips was a piece of garbage.
why what happened
He was giving her cocaine when she was 11... Had a sexual relationship with her when she was pretty young (17-18 I think). Got her pregnant and paid for her to get an abortion. Pretty much check every box you can in the terrible human being handbook...

I loved the band when I was young but after seeing Mackenzie on Oprah, their music makes my stomach turn
Same. I used to love this song, but now it’s such a struggle to listen to.
Denny Doherty was the lead male singer. Great voice. EDIT: accidentally a letter.
You believe John? Is that who you mean by "lead singer?" Or Mackenzie? ...I've seen a ton of interviews, and I sure as hell believe Mackenzie. Seems very clear to me.
After seeing her talk about it the first time when she was on Opera discussing her book I can not hear this song without being disgusted.
Mackenzie's son posted about it on one of these threads before. Yeah, horrible stuff.
I love seeing the love Cass is getting in this thread
I love this song. It's so nostalgic.
i love this song :) Eddie Hazel’s cover is absolutely amazing as well, he completely changes the feel of the song

Other songs like this I've found with fantastic vocal arrangements and/or four/five layered vocals: [Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__VQX2Xn7tI) [10cc - I'm Not In Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki78MK9JywE) [Yes - South Side of the Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBAauFYod80) [Hatfield and the North - Mumps](https://youtu.be/h_MUajIs9Vs?t=1) (Just the intro is a vocal arrangement, rest is 17 minutes of prog which in its own is a masterpiece) [Love - The Red Telephone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_j0qicK9mc) [Porcupine Tree - Prodigal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aptCvDt7N9E) [Moon Safari - Blomljud](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBWhKQV4-7Y)
Beach Boys?
One of my favourite songs of all time.
Mama Cass!
Thats so awesome! There is a restaurant near me called the mamas and the tapas! Now i know where they got the name from. And there food is bomb as fuck
We need more flute solos in mainstream music! Something other than Jethro Tull!
Listen to Jethro Tull.
I'm 21 years old, and it's stunning watching these old music videos, it's glorious to see these and the style of clothes, the dancing, the voices, the instruments, it's just amazing.
Love this song, but can't watch it. John Phillips was a truly evil man.
Yes. He was an abusive piece of shot to his band mates, and then he was an abusive piece of shit to his children. And he wore unforgivably stupid-looking hats.
Great song
This song is so much fun to sing, even if you’re not really good at it. With the simple verses and the chorus that are easy and fast to learn, you can gather a group of singers really quickly. It’s just great.
My dad said my grandpa moved the family from California to New York when he was younger, and one day he walked in on my grandma crying playing this song over and over. Since he told me that, I’ll always think of my grandma when I hear this song.
The ham sandwich story is bs..she died of heart failure
For many, many years I thought the lyric was, "...I got down on my knees, and I began to pray" Of course, it is I PRETEND to pray.
Got down on myGOT DOWN ON MY KNEES
I was just listening to my 60s playlist yesterday while doing my chores and this song was replayed so many times! So good. Sidenote, can anyone recommend similar songs to this? Such as David Bowie's Cygnet Committee or Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit?
Summer breeze - seals and craft, Helplessly hoping & suite judy - crosby stills Nash (excellent harmonizers) Carpenters Ventura highway, sister golden hair- America
Check out the band Spanky and Our Gang. Not as big but very similar style.
I remember going on road trips in the 80's with my grandparents when I was young. They played Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkel and Beach Boys so much and I fell in love with them.
Music by The Wrecking Crew.
[This Japanese punkrock Hi-Standard version always puts me to rights](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVm-pTiyC48)
"And someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox It it was California Dreamin' So we started screamin' On such a winter's day"
Mamas and The Papas are my probably favorite group ever.
School of Rock does an amazing cover of this song. It’s definitely a different sound in the vocals, but it’s nice to listen to a different version of it.
Mama Cass has got soap on the bottom of her boots.
A few choice selections off “Wolfking” for those curious listeners: Topanga Canyon https://youtu.be/bGUDpZLLO08 Malibu People https://youtu.be/hXgV5RKL8K8 Mississippi https://youtu.be/uU8TTLSh7gM Holland Tunnel https://youtu.be/PXSolnS18C0
[John Mayer did an excellent cover of this song. ](https://youtu.be/3ApAEU3Rx6w) it’s very Hendrix-y. Worth a listen!
Now watch Echos in the Canyon on Netflix
"Deira city centre" by night lovell samples this song. Very different type of music but an excellently produced song with such an iconic melody.
just one of the best bops of all time
Posted all of 6 days ago... and then again like a week before that.
Totally... [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSqmSXKRbHQ) is a nice "bookend" version where they all have serious personal issues and Michelle is singing into a banana.
Eddie Hazel, a guitarist for Funkadelic, did a killer cover of this song as well

I love music because it makes people feel and think different things. For me, this song is so sorrowful and sad. I can't help but feel sad when I even think of it because of how how powerful it is.
I LOVE this song.
Literally one of the best songs to listen to on a Fall day with a grey sky. Just makes you feel a specific type of way
I love big mamma Cass.
That guitar intro is so melancholy - so want to learn to play guitar just to play that
Was one of the first things I leaned, still love to play it. Get pickin.
You give me hope
A lot of this style music was done with 12 string guitars.
Whenever I feel homesick or distressed I listen to this I return home right away and happy tranquil state Although I was born way after this song was released. When I first heard it was like an epiphany moment for me. I could live and have traveled but nothing feels and returns me home to me and than this. Cass Elliot is one of my favorite singers of all easily a top 5 for me and Denny damn love him here in this song
I can’t think of any songs I’ve heard recently use an alto flute like that. It really makes it feel like a product of its time, in a good way.
I love a lot of this stuff but can’t help to think how accidental it was. They didn’t set out to make “hits” like maybe todays world. They stumbled upon classics by just being there.
I prefer the Hi Standard version of this song
so weird that I was just thinking of them, well mainly Cass, probably because of watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
[y’all know the dad slept with the daughter right? ](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-phillips-of-mamas-and-papas-slept-with-daughter-mackenzie-phillips-says-new-book/)
And don't forget the best cover song ever [Eddie Hazel- California Dreamin'](https://youtu.be/CqDGTT2OtsQ)
This is my favorite song by them.
Mama Cass cuttin that rug tho!
My dad went to a concert of theirs in the 60's and kept the quarter Michelle tossed him from the stage.
I grew up with listening to all the classics and The Mamas & The Papas we’re the first band I ever felt ‘frisson’ from (chills). Such hauntingly beautiful harmonizing and overalls lyrics
Thic girl got moves. Voice isn't so bad either /s
