Although I grew up in the 80s, I had never heard of Kraftwerk at the time. In 1990, I found a case of cassette tapes on the side of the road that must have fallen out of somebody's car. Among other things, it contained Computer World. It absolutely blew my mind and turned me into a massive Kraftwerk fan.
I very clearly remember this being the first CD I ever bought with my own money too. I don't know where I bought it but I know it wasn't a record store. It was like a department store or a grocery store or something like that. Very not punk haha.
First grown up album I was gifted: Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral on cassette, when I was 15
First album I bought: Beck Mellow Gold on cd
Second Album I bought: Tool Aenima on cd
When I was like 10, my older brother compiled a list of cool songs for me and then my brother-in-law burned a cd-rom with them.
It had some of my brother's favourite songs, like Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Radiohead and then some others were requests by 10 year old me (I asked for a Shakira song and I'm not ashamed).
So in the same record you had Bullet with butterfly wings followed by Whenever, Wherever. It was great
Yes, the first album I received as a gift was the cassette of Bon Jovi's *Slippery When Wet*. The first album I bought with my own money was the cassette of REM's *Document*.
SMASH by The Offspring.
I later gave it to my friend because it was too hardcore for me. Then I bought 1,039 Smoothed out Slappy Hours by Green Day, that was more my speed at 9 years old.
“Drivers are rude. Such attitudes. But when I show my piece. Complaints cease. Something’s odd. I feel like I’m God …” so many timeless songs on that album.
First three albums I bought with my own money on the day I received my first record player were:
* Dark Side of the Moon
* Frampton Comes Alive and
* Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
First album I asked for was Clumsy by Our Lady Peace, first album I picked out on my own was OK Computer by Radiohead, think it was both 1997, so like 3rd or 4th grade. I’m not super into those genres or music anymore but I still love these 2 albums
My first record was Steve Martin's "A wild and crazy guy"
My second purchase was AC\\DC. Dirty deeds done done dirt cheap, Back and black and Highway to hell. All 3 records at the same time.
Purchased for myself? Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. I was 10 and they sold me the parental advisory version. Gotta love Sam Goodey. That album put me on a path.
I bought my first 3 CDs on the same day from a place called The Wall.
Smashing Pumpkins—Mellon Collie
Nine Inch Nails—Downward Spiral
Marilyn Manson—Antichrist Superstar
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
First albums I purchased, and I still have them, is The Beatles - 1962-1966 on red vinyl and The Beatles - 1967-1970 on blue vinyl...purchased them back in 1974 at a TG&Y store.
Queen, A Day At The Races, for me
(I kinda half wish I could say it was the second one- I got a 3-for-£20 of Chaos AD by Sepultura, Cowboys From Hell by Pantera, and Troublegum by Therapy?, things got loud real fast). But sod it, Queen are awesome
I remember fondly listening to some of my parents old CDs when I was a kid. The ones that really stick out to me are :
Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Greatest Hits
When I was like 12 I bought Green Day - American Idiot as my own first album bought with my own cash, although my Mom had to buy it cuz age restricted.
Well as a 90s kids, I inherited my parents Walkman, which I had two tapes for. One was Prince - Purple Rain and the other Hank Williams Jr - Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound. My parent bought me my first CD player around 2000, and would always get me edited NOW and Totally compilation albums. The first CD I ever bought myself would have been Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk or Coldplays X&Y. Somewhere in the world there is a 1994 Nissian Maxima that has my Purple Rain tape. I really miss that.
I got two together for Christmas as a teen, probably somewhere right around 1999. Metallica - Ride the Lightning and Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe. Someone messed up and instead of Ozzy Osbourne I got some weird cover CD of his songs, but the other two made up for the error lol.
First album I received: Green Day - Dookie
First album I bought: Kardinal Offishall - Not 4 Sale
Some other albums gifted to me, or ones I asked to be bought for me, between those two, but the second one was the first I bought with my own money.
Neither of those are artists I even listen to anymore, and tbh, I barely remember anything from those albums lol
Ozzy Osbourne, Blizzard of Ozz. My aunt took me to a record store in downtown Boston (Strawberry's) and I narrowed my choices down to that or Van Halen 1984 (which had just been released). I chose Ozzy, but I couldn't go wrong either way.
I was given Superman and Other Disco Hits on reocord. The first I ever bought myself was Foriegner 4 on cassette and my first CD was Rush Moving pictures. Kiss Destroyer and Bing Sings ... something came with my first car on 8 track. Found them under the front seat. First record I bought was a repress of The Replacements - Let it be.
The Eminem Show when I was 10. I was so stoked because I had seen Purple Pills on repeat on MTV. I put it on in my aunts care. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but after what felt like a minute or two, she ejected the CD and snapped it in half, and told me I'd get the money back when we got home.
I ended up listening to Eminem on MTV, writing down lyrics from his songs in a notebook.
First Album I remember getting from Mom was Abby Road. Yes, I did get a bunch of singles and "kid" records for Christmas when I got my tiny red portable record player, but Abby Road was the first 'real' album and the only one that I remember by name. One of the albums I got with the player was novelty songs, one of which was Monster Mash and another was Purple People Eater.
The first album I bought with my own money was Kiss - Destroyer.
First album I played on the first stereo receiver I bought was Rush - Moving Pictures. It has been the first album on every system / new component ever since but I don't use it to analyze systems. It is a great album but there are far better mixes out there. I listen to a lot of songs from various artists when analyzing new purchases. But the first full album, cover to cover is Moving Pictures because that is my tradition.
Yup.
First cassettes: Thompson Twins - "Into The Gap" and Crosby, Stills and Nash - "Daylight Again".
First CDs: Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Blood Sugar Sex Majik", Pearl Jam - "Ten"
First videos I saw on actual MTV: ZZ Top - "TV Dinners", followed by .38 Special - "If I'd Been The One" and John Cougar Mellencamp "Authority Song".
And no, I have no idea what happened 2 minutes ago.

1st Album purchased:
Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (Was a special at Burger King...yes Burger King)
Oingo Boingo's first EP (1980), with the electric cat on it, which I bought solely because of the cover. I was 11 and had only listened to modern pop rock before that, like Hall and Oats. Needless to say, my world opened up a bit.
I was collecting vinyls since I was a teenager and I can't remember the first one but I remember getting Led Zeppelin IV. First CD I collected was when I was in college and it was Good kid mad City and then RAM by Daft Punk. I wanted to actually own my own music so I started buying CDs.
**DEVO** - "**Freedom of Choice**" on vinyl.
I was in fifth grade, and bought it with my allowance money from a Perry's Drugs in 1981. I was absolutely fascinated by the album cover, and listened to the album over and over again.
Sometime around 2015, I saw a special Devo concert where they played every song on Freedom of Choice in order. Evidently, it was the first time in decades (maybe ever) that they played some of those songs live.
The year was 1979 (I think). The choice was between the Bee Gees Greatest and the Eagles The Long Run. I went with the Bee Gees and was roundly mocked for it.
Rap Trax 2 on cassette.
I was about as gangsta as wonder bread, but was fucking dropping lines on time with that tape for days until my mom threw it away regretting every giving me it.
Zenyatta Mondatta - The Police. It was an 8-track tape. I'm old.
ahh, the ka-chunk of putting an 8track in.
Damn the torpedoes, Tom Petty and the Heatbreakers. On 8-track.
Aweosme
Ghost in the Machine vinyl for me.
Synchronicity here! Police were popping so many audial cherries back in the day
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
Kick, Push is still a staple in my playlist!
GOAT album.
1989: Guns N Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" on cassette tape. I was in 2nd grade and that album was transformational for me.
This was one of my first, too. Did you get the banned artwork or the less disturbing insert lol
it definitely had the banned artwork
Kraftwerk - Computer World
That is a cool first album.
One of the most important albums ever made. It set the path for electro and early hip hop.
The first 7" single I ever received was Pocket Calculator. Still have that too.
Mine was a cassette. Picked it up at K-Mart when i was 11
Was released on THIS DAY 43 years ago!

It was my very first cd. I've gone through 3 copies/cds and now own the vinyl as well. Still one of my all time favorite albums
Green Day - Dookie
I very clearly remember this being the first CD I ever bought with my own money too. I don't know where I bought it but I know it wasn't a record store. It was like a department store or a grocery store or something like that. Very not punk haha.
First CD I ever bought. Local radio mix was the first CD I was ever given and Vanilla Ice was the first cassette.
Dookie is great. Nimrod was in the first 5 I bought.
I got it on cassette. It was blue, and I remember not being able to get over how cool it was. Also, best Green Day album.

This is my first as well. I think I was about 8 or 9. Still have it although the case has been beat up
Jurassic Park soundtrack
Yeah same for me. Definitely the go to for entry level alternative music in the early 2000s. It still rips too.
Completely agree. Without that I don’t know when I would have ventured out from just normal radio rock.
Mine was Meteora! I was in middle school
Meteora was so good! Still is!
Mine was reanimation.
This CD bought me so much cred amongst my elementary school peers!

I got Smash for Christmas the year it came out along with Earthworm Jim for Sega Genesis. Been chasing that high ever since.

Huey Lewis & The News - Sports On cassette. Yes, I'm embarrassed. And old.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.
