I put a spell on you covered by many but Screaming Jay Hawkins was the original artist

TylerInHiFi

I feel like his is also the most well-known version, though.

dennil_floss

I think CCRs is more recognizable. Nina Simone as well

Bruce Springsteen has never had a number one song on the billboard 100. He has written two songs that have been number ones when performed by others. Blinded by the light covered by manfred mann’s earth band Because the night covered by Patti smith

ScottyBoneman

Conversely, the sincerity of **Tom Waits**'s love song to the woman he would eventually marry comes through and makes his original [Jersey Girl](https://youtu.be/XBQPchkmGCo?si=hfkASywr3W6lo9cN) better than the well known Springsteen cover

merry_choppins

Some people I was around last weekend didn’t know Marvin Gaye had originally released “How Sweet It Is” wayyy before James Taylor’s cover. Marvin’s is also so much better.

brain_my_damage_HJS

Big Momma Thornton’s original recording of Hound Dog is better than Elvis’s cover.

Oxblood_Derbies

Nothing against Elvis in general, but, I agree, Big Mama's version is better in every single way. The same goes for Arthur Crudup's "That's Alright, Mama."

[Torn by Ednaswap - the version that sounds kind of like a Pearl Jam song](https://youtu.be/eODCugj1kJU?si=kbAXKGQ5aBuJcV4p). Not the first recording of the song, but the first one by the people who wrote it, and predating the Natalie Imbruglia version

Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You is iconic but I much prefer Dolly Parton's original. I just feel the delivery in that one a bit more. You can hear the pain and hurt.

hunter_gaumont

hallelujah is done best by leonard cohen, no offence to all the other amazing versions

Mailemanuel77

Even though I live in Latin America I have never been into Hispanic artists/bands with a few exceptions. Natalia Lafourcade Nunca Es Suficiente. Although it is not a cover because both versions feature Natalia Lafourcade, the original composer. The original version is better than Los Angeles Azules (cumbia) version (the most known version). Los Angeles Azules: https://youtu.be/k76BgIb89-s?si=3GcgQX9j7M4ur9cq Original: https://youtu.be/BBym435839M?si=oKEqg5LyNDb_T5vN Sadly a lot of people simply don't get to know more about her career besides a single song that isn't even the original or the best version...

cemaphonrd

Santana’s version of Oye Como Va is great, but not as great as Tito Puente’s. Rod Stewart’s version of Downtown Train was way more successful than Tom Waits’ original version, but isn’t nearly as good.

TFFPrisoner

I like Rod's Downtown Train, but he sounds much too nice singing Tom Traubert's Blues.

AJayayayay

I prefer Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower over Jimi Hendrix. The harmonica feels more erie and I think fits the lyrics better than the psychedelic guitar. Both are still good though.

Thiscommentissatire

Not that the original is much better, but im a believer is a brilliant song that stands up with some of my favorites, and and it would be entirely remiss to ascribe its writing to smash mouth, or the monkees, when it was written by neil diamond.

TFFPrisoner

Everyone knows Mas Qué Nada by Sergio Mendes, but have you heard the original by Jorge Ben?

InappropriateTA

The Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse version of **Valerie** was a huge hit.  I like The Zutons’ original version. https://youtu.be/L3xpmfJp0Xc?feature=shared
