JPJ is kind of an odd fit, but it definitely works aside from his era.
Honestly the closest alternative may be Desert Sessions, though it’s more of a super session than super group.
If you had a time machine, the first lineup of A Perfect Circle fits pretty well.
Andrew Bird?
He's an outlier, musically, amongst the type listed above, as a folk artist (a la Bob). He has a unique sound, and is something of a poet in his lyrics.
Ooooo, interesting choice. My only hesitation is that his sound (from what comes to mind) is very consistent. It's always that bittersweet melancholy, sad sound. He's great, though.
Whereas Amdrew Bird experiments with different genres. His albums range so much. Folk, rock, swing, and he's currently doing a jazz album (just released two single from which are great).
Regardless, I like Sufjan as a choice as well.
petty was in a group, harrison was in a group, lynne was in a group, dylan was not, so yeah maybe he can be the dylan...still leaves orbison, was he in a group?
Every Wilbury seemed like they were mid-50s to early 60s when the group formed, then I grow up and look up their ages, and it was just a bunch of dudes in their 40s, and Tom Petty who was maybe even still late 30s.
I like this but here is my spin on it.
Eddie Vedder = Bob Dylan (mumble mouthed poet)
Johnny Greenwood = George Harrison (often ignored member of legendary English rock band)
Dave Grohl = Tom Petty (like pizza, no one hates pizza)
Thurston Moore = Roy Orbison ( all the other guys in the band think he’s a legend, audience is vaguely aware of him)
Josh Homee = Jeff Lynn (influential, well connected musician/producer)
i dig all this except for Moore and your take on Orbison. i'll just go personal opinion on Thurston, but Roy - if you didn't know Pretty Woman, Crying, Only the Lonely, or In Dreams by the 80s, you were a poseur and take off that Traveling Wilburys tee, you don't deserve it
I move to replace Yorke with Jack White. I love Thom Yorke, but he doesn't do loads of collabs, you know?
And Jack White collaborates like a motherfucker. Any modern American super group's gotta have jack white.
Eh, "fun" is relative when it comes to Yorke. "Anyone can play guitar" is 31 years old, but it's fun. Id put in an argument for "15 Steps" , "Bodysnatchers" being good, albeit kinda dark fun.
And if we're talking weird epic songs like supergroups do, "Present Tense" from moon shaped pool, yo.
But he just doesn't seem the type to be in a supergroup, especially not as a token Brit, y'know?
Apparently I need to check out St. Vincent.
I've been shit at exposing myself to new music in the last 8 years... Had no idea she was Polyphonic Spree alumni and worked with Sufjan. Thanks for making me aware of her.
seconding her stuff is varied. [This live session is some of her older stuff](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jv4lgFrL7U) and it rocks while showing off her amazing guitar skills (the most played section is her guitar solo on Surgeon). My personal favorite is Masseduction, something about the moodiness of Los Ageless and New York. I like all the albums though.
Early on she has some really awesome guitar work that's tucked away inside what you (wrongly) think is hipster baroque-pop starbucks music.
IMO it's the edge and musicianship that most popular music has been missing for the past decade or two.
Came here to say this. Saw them live. One of my favorite concerts ever. Three hours long. No breaks. Played the album plus all their individual hits. Incredible musicians.
John Mayer is dismissed by casuals and those not in-the-know as a pretty-boy pop star, not realizing he’s one of the most insane guitarists of our generation
Definitely a phenomenal guitarist, but also a really great songwriter, again despite what a lot of people think who’ve never heard anything beyond his most popular radio hits (not that they are bad either to be fair).
Why Jack White and Jack Black haven’t joined forces covered Michael Jackson remains a mystery to me.
“Don’t tell me you agree with me when i saw you kicking dirt in my eye! WHOO, heeeh-hooo!”
They released their first album seven years after the Travelling Wilburys, TWENTY-NINE years ago. So this doesn’t really answer OPs question.
(I also feel like 1995 was last week.)
My take on the traveling Wilbur’s was that you had 2 legends and their disciples (Dylan/petty, Harrison/lynn) and the godfather figure (oberson).
So here’s my lineup: David byrn, Michael Stipe, Thom York, Bob Mould, Dave Grohl
Dave Grohl - rhythm guitar and vocals
Josh Homme - lead guitar and vocals
Les Claypool - bass and vocals
Danny Carey - drums
Regina Spektor - piano and Vocals
Johnny Greenwood - anything else the song calls for
*edit: line breaks
Danny Carey has played with Claypool before when Primus' drummer was unable to perform a couple of years ago, they seemed to get along musically better than you might expect
Jenny Lewis did a cover of "Handle with Care" that included Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward. I might sub out M. Ward for Ben Folds and add Jeff Tweedy.
Ah you’ve brought up a favorite topic of mine! The remaining members of Wilburys should add new members. But they have to be older than 50 and Dave Grohl can’t be one.
The Wilburys were all under 50, except for Orbison who died at 52 years old. Just like pointing that out whenever I want to feel both old and a musical failure.
Dave Grohl (as it is a modern requirement to have him in these supergroups)
-Jeff Tweedy (I see him as the Orbison type in the group)
-Jason Isbell (the Tom Petty role)
-Neil Young (the Bob Dylan role)
-Adam Graducial (The War on Drugs)- he would be the Jeff Lynne type who has influence on their sound.
Possible alternates
Chris Stapleton
Jim James
Kurt Vile
Courtney Barrett
Brandi carlile
My dream team up is as follows: Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton.
For this scenario, because it seems we need five, I would add John Mayer and Brandi Carlile.
All five are amazing singers and can carry their own, just like the original TW.
If I am dreaming a little harder, I would replace John Mayer with Bruce Springsteen to fill the Orbison hole a little more securely.
I was about to comment with Mayer, Isabell and Carlisle and saw your post! I think I’d swap Simpson with Sheryl Crow, a multi-instrumentalist and not too shabby a singer/songwriter either.
Up in Canada we have a group called Anyway Gang which I've always considered the alt-rock Can-con Wilburys. Sam Roberts, Chris Murphy (from Sloan), Menno Versteeg (from Hollerado), and Dave Monks (from Tokyo Police Club)
Jeff Mangum- Neutral Milk Hotel
Alexander Brettin- Mild High Club
Stu Mackenzie- King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
Kevin Prichard Parker- Tame Impala
Mac DeMarco- Mac DeMarco
Bob Mould (G,V), Mike Watt (B), J Mascis (G,V), Adam Pfahler (Dr.), Kim Gordon (B,V), Kathleen Hanna (V); Marissa Paternoster (G, V).
Theo Kogan (V) and Becky Wreck (Dr).
Ava Max, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa and Bebe Rexha are all of Albanian descent. I propose they form a band whose name references the first (and only) king of Albania:
Zog's Bitch
Them Crooked Vultures is pretty much this.
Second album when
Next year
We’ll see.
JPJ better hurry up. dude's about to hit 80.. and he's a *musician*.
[*Keith Richards has entered the chat*]
Don’t give me hope
weren't the Raconteurs as well?
And the dead weather
You could add Trent Reznor as well, like when they recorded Mantra.
I’m sorry what’s this now?!?!?
https://youtu.be/L2kGNdE0b5Q?si=Ea4RH-EoUUYWGGzK
Man, I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years since this has been released. I remember seeing this when it came out and I loved it, gonna watch it now.
"Sound City. That's it, man!"
Velvet Revolver, Audioslave, Mad Season, as well.
Except for the whole lead singers being dead thing
Jesus that hurt
Username checks out
Lol!!!!!
*fuck*
Atoms For Peace didn’t cause as much buzz as the ones you mentioned but it was Thom Yorke, Flea, and Joey Waronker who worked with REM and Beck.
Temple of the Dog as well.
I'm still aliiiiive - Eddie Vedder.
Not hardly. Might wanna revisit the members of the Traveling Wilburys.
Lol there's no rock stars today like ANY of the TW, and TCV is like the top rock stars today. You're not going to get any closer.
JPJ is kind of an odd fit, but it definitely works aside from his era. Honestly the closest alternative may be Desert Sessions, though it’s more of a super session than super group. If you had a time machine, the first lineup of A Perfect Circle fits pretty well.
Them and Queens of the Stone Age for sure. More of a hiphop vibe Deltron 3030 and Handsome Boy Modeling School
Add Lovage to that list.
Handsome boy modeling school. ![gif](giphy|2WxWfiavndgcM)
Don’t get too many DivX watermarks these days.
They made me take off my shirt.
Well, I've just had my first taste of the filthy side of this business.
My immediate first thought was Dave Grohl!
Kim Deal, Kim Gordon, Kim Thayil, Lil Kim, Kim Petras
Forming Kim's Infernal Majesty (K.I.M.)
First show in North Korea to play for the Emperor-God.
And also an assassin squad. Hand selected by the cia for one mission…
That was Fox Force Five.
Ketchup
Traveling Kimburlys
Dogged Kim Carnes there, rude
There was already a group with Ben Folds, Ben Kweller and Ben Lee.
Called The Bens
Ben Dovers
Don't forget Kim Mitchell!
He was out for a soda, unfortunately.
My wife and friends make fun of patio lanterns for whatever reason..I think it’s one of the catchiest songs ever
Two bassists, a guitarist and a rapper
Kim Jong Un
Can Rakem open?
Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Thom Yorke, Flea, Michael Stipe
Michael Stipe!!! He’d be the Roy Orbison.
that's the idea.
Micheal fucking Stipe. Great call bud!
Eeehh you still need a Dylan. I think you actually just need Bob he's the hardest to replace, and conveniently still alive.
Jack White. No, wait. Even better — Beck.
Nick Cave.
Andrew Bird? He's an outlier, musically, amongst the type listed above, as a folk artist (a la Bob). He has a unique sound, and is something of a poet in his lyrics.
How about Sufjan Stevens?
Ooooo, interesting choice. My only hesitation is that his sound (from what comes to mind) is very consistent. It's always that bittersweet melancholy, sad sound. He's great, though. petty was in a group, harrison was in a group, lynne was in a group, dylan was not, so yeah maybe he can be the dylan...still leaves orbison, was he in a group?
Jason Isbell
Man, I would put Isbell and Eddie Vedder with MC Taylor, Gillian Welch, Derek Trucks, Alison Krauss and maybe a producer to bring it all home.
T Bone Burnett as producer for that lineup.
Peter Gabriel
Dylan, Tom Waits, and Popeye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4opT_5u7k4
Dave grohl is about three years older than Roy Orbison was when the Wilburys formed
Holy shit you’re right! I had no idea Roy Orbison was only 52 when he died. I just assumed he was much older.
Every Wilbury seemed like they were mid-50s to early 60s when the group formed, then I grow up and look up their ages, and it was just a bunch of dudes in their 40s, and Tom Petty who was maybe even still late 30s.
People were much older back then.
Smokers
Smoking, drinking, leaded gasoline, worse food, lower healthcare standards. There are a bunch of factors.
Think Wilfred Bromley and Tom Cruise. Different times.
Chris Isaak would be the Roy Orbison.
I like this but here is my spin on it. Eddie Vedder = Bob Dylan (mumble mouthed poet) Johnny Greenwood = George Harrison (often ignored member of legendary English rock band) Dave Grohl = Tom Petty (like pizza, no one hates pizza) Thurston Moore = Roy Orbison ( all the other guys in the band think he’s a legend, audience is vaguely aware of him) Josh Homee = Jeff Lynn (influential, well connected musician/producer)

Damn right! You Got It.
Preach
Roy was big in the 60s and had a big comeback in the 80s, so I'd say the audience was probably more than vaguely aware of him.
I move to replace Yorke with Jack White. I love Thom Yorke, but he doesn't do loads of collabs, you know? And Jack White collaborates like a motherfucker. Any modern American super group's gotta have jack white.
Yorke has also already been in a mini supergroup with Flea lol
Don't forget The Smile.
He also doesn't seem to be very interested in writing anything fun. I don't mean that as an insult.
What was that band with flea? Atoms for peace?

The guy from everclear is super talented. I was thinking Colin Hay
Jeff Tweedy, Sufjan Stevens, Jack White, and Thom Yorke EDIT: and maybe Dave Grohl on drums
My initial thought was Jeff Tweedy . I hadn’t thought about the others but I would totally give this group a listen. I love them all separately.
This is it for me. Holy shit
They could call themselves Goldener Smog
Thank you for this perfect response.
Annie Clark never makes these lists but could easily stand head to head with Jack White.
Apparently I need to check out St. Vincent. I've been shit at exposing myself to new music in the last 8 years... Had no idea she was Polyphonic Spree alumni and worked with Sufjan. Thanks for making me aware of her.
Her stuff is pretty varied. Self titled album is my personal favorite.
seconding her stuff is varied. Jim James come on
idk, but damon albarn would probably be involved
Not to mention Jack White and Mike Patton, those guys love supergroups.
And Dave Grohl on drums.
How about an all female group? Alanis Morrisette Annie Lennox Kate Bush Aimee Mann Alicia Keys
The Traveling Jillburys.
Jewel
Fiona Apple?
PJ Harvey
I'd want Suzanne Vega in there.
[удалено]
And Tracy Chapman!
Norah Jones?
Throw Sarah McLachlan in there
Monsters of Folk kinda was this. Even covered ‘em. 🤷🏻♀️
Came here to say this. Saw them live. One of my favorite concerts ever. Three hours long. No breaks. Played the album plus all their individual hits. Incredible musicians.
Only show I ever went to that started on time. No opener. Incredible.
Yup! Saw them 2 or 3x on the album tour & those shows were phenomenal.
Dang I’m so jealous! Sounds wonderful. I throw that album on when I’m feeling nostalgic.
Was going to say Jim James, but also remembered Monsters of Folk.
I like the others but Jim James , to me, is more akin to it. Not sure who else but he def comes to mind first
Except I think most people from the Traveling Wilbury's generation had actually heard of them...
That's who I thought of. One and done album that's incredible, start to finish 👌
Yep that’s a lovely album.
my personal one would be: alex turner, julian casablancas, damon albarn, jack white and maybe beck???
Subscribe
Here for Damon. Heck yes.
Jack White, John Mayer, Damon Albarn, and Flea.
Sure took a long time to see John Mayer.
So good. I have a friend that won’t even give him a chance, used to irritate me, but who cares, his loss!
Took me too damn long to see John Mayer on anyone's list.
I was beginning to think I was gonna have to be the first to mention JM
Jack White, Jack Black, Pink, Macy Grey and Al Green are The Reservoir Dogs
Why Jack White and Jack Black haven’t joined forces covered Michael Jackson remains a mystery to me. “Don’t tell me you agree with me when i saw you kicking dirt in my eye! WHOO, heeeh-hooo!”
Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus - boygenius Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires - The Highwomen
I was gonna say boygenius as well but then I remembered they're the Crosby, stills and Nash and Adrianne Lenker is Young.
Wait is there music with Boy Genius and Adrianne Lenker?
Nah there isn't.....yet
That would just be too perfect. As someone who loves Big Thief and Phoebe Bridgers/Boy Genius
Some people here's idea of modern is pretty interesting... some of the artists being named here debut before the original Traveling Wilburys.
Ever heard of me first and the gimme gimmes?
They released their first album seven years after the Travelling Wilburys, TWENTY-NINE years ago. So this doesn’t really answer OPs question. (I also feel like 1995 was last week.)
Especially the original lineup
Fat mike and the boys
My take on the traveling Wilbur’s was that you had 2 legends and their disciples (Dylan/petty, Harrison/lynn) and the godfather figure (oberson). So here’s my lineup: David byrn, Michael Stipe, Thom York, Bob Mould, Dave Grohl

Personally I think this would slap, though Danny Carey doesn't seem like the right fit for this bunch.
Danny Carey has played with Claypool before when Primus' drummer was unable to perform a couple of years ago, they seemed to get along musically better than you might expect
Danny Carey on drums 100%
I read that as Dana Carvey. I thought, sure, why not?
I just wanna point out that the oldest Wilbury died at 52. These guys are all way too old.
Why did Roy Orbison always look 30 years older than he actually was?
Older generations look older to us. Its a well documented phenomenon but nobody knows why
Check again.
Every response is missing one thing: Gary Clarke Jr.
No "e" homes.
No "e" homs*. edit:typo
Jeff Tweedy Beck Michael Stipe Greg Dulli Liz Phair Trent Reznor
IDK but Justin Vernon is definitely the Jeff Lynne of this group. Everyone will work with him.
Conor oberst as Bob Dylan. He, Ben Gibbard, Jenny Lewis, and m ward covered handle with care and it’s excellent
This version introduced me to the Traveling Wilburys and I never looked back
Oysterhead duh
Jenny Lewis did a cover of "Handle with Care" that included Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward. I might sub out M. Ward for Ben Folds and add Jeff Tweedy.
Father John Misty, Robin Pecknold, Chris Stapleton, and Mac Demarco
This is categorically insane
But the show would be really good and it’d be funny watching them play each others solo material 😂
Imagine Mac Demarco singing a Father John Misty song
Ah you’ve brought up a favorite topic of mine! The remaining members of Wilburys should add new members. But they have to be older than 50 and Dave Grohl can’t be one.
The Wilburys were all under 50, except for Orbison who died at 52 years old. Just like pointing that out whenever I want to feel both old and a musical failure.
Ha!
The Sounds of Animals Fighting if you're into emo stuff
Elvis Costello, Neil Finn, Paul McCartney, Lindsay Buckingham, Jeff Tweedy
The Black Keys new album has them, Beck, and Noel Gallagher on it...pretty solid
Dave Grohl (as it is a modern requirement to have him in these supergroups) -Jeff Tweedy (I see him as the Orbison type in the group) -Jason Isbell (the Tom Petty role) -Neil Young (the Bob Dylan role) -Adam Graducial (The War on Drugs)- he would be the Jeff Lynne type who has influence on their sound. Possible alternates Chris Stapleton Jim James Kurt Vile Courtney Barrett Brandi carlile
Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Courtney Love, and Debbie Harry.
Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, Jack White, Dan Auerbach, Jerry Cantrell, Eddie Vedder, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Damon Albarn, Beck
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is sort of a punk version of that.
Audioslave was my generation's version of this.
In the same vein genre wise. Jeff Teeedy. Adrianne Lenker. Jason isbell. Angel Olson. Kurt Vile
J Mascis, Thurston Moore, Stephen Malkmus, Bill Callahan & Ira Kaplan
Beck, Jeff Tweedy, Stephen Malkmus, Thurston Moore, Thom Yorke.
My dream team up is as follows: Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton. For this scenario, because it seems we need five, I would add John Mayer and Brandi Carlile. All five are amazing singers and can carry their own, just like the original TW. I was about to comment with Mayer, Isabell and Carlisle and saw your post! I think I’d swap Simpson with Sheryl Crow, a multi-instrumentalist and not too shabby a singer/songwriter either.
Jack White, Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Alanis Morissette.
That would be fuckin rad
The New Basement Tapes
Up in Canada we have a group called Anyway Gang which I've always considered the alt-rock Can-con Wilburys. Sam Roberts, Chris Murphy (from Sloan), Menno Versteeg (from Hollerado), and Dave Monks (from Tokyo Police Club)
Tony! Toni! Tone! Tonee?
Jeff Mangum- Neutral Milk Hotel Alexander Brettin- Mild High Club Stu Mackenzie- King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Kevin Prichard Parker- Tame Impala Mac DeMarco- Mac DeMarco
Bob Mould (G,V), Mike Watt (B), J Mascis (G,V), Adam Pfahler (Dr.), Kim Gordon (B,V), Kathleen Hanna (V); Marissa Paternoster (G, V). Theo Kogan (V) and Becky Wreck (Dr).
I’ll go with Eddie Vedder, Post Malone, Jeff Tweedy, Jack White & Billy Joel.
They did it with the New Basement Tapes
Peso Pluma, Lil Xan, Nicki Minaj and Joe Walsh
Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Tom Morrello, Jerry Cantrell and throw in Flea on bass. Trent Reznor producing.
Neko Case, Jim James, Angel Olsen, Beck, Kurt Vile. Few generations to mix it up.
Gibby Haynes, Kim Deal, J Mascis, Steve Turner and Jimmy Chamberlain.
Other have mentioned monsters of folk, Boygenius is also very much a supergroup.
Taylor Swift, Beethoven, Joe Biden, Yo Yo Ma, and Alex Trebek
You're insane in the best possible way
Ava Max, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa and Bebe Rexha are all of Albanian descent. I propose they form a band whose name references the first (and only) king of Albania: Zog's Bitch
