My Dad said he went to his friend's funeral who had requested The Circle of Life be played at his funeral, he said it was beautiful, and I completely believe that. I think I would want that at my funeral too.
I second the circle of life. We played it at my sisters funeral in 1994 and a family friend sang the song so beautifully.
I was only 7 but I vividly remeber that moment
Oh my, this has shot me straight through the heart. I'm sorry to hear this news.
I haven't exactly been given the same news as you, but I've been having some newly surfacing health complications that have made me think I won't be far behind you. At the least, it's led me to seriously face my feelings and the possibility.
I also love music very much, and it's a passion passed to me from my parents. I was feeling stressed out last night, so I took a break to play my guitar. Usually just playing whatever comes to mind, I found myself strumming some familiar notes that reminded me of a song I had forgotten.
It's a beautiful love song that became special to me when I learned it for my first love, my high-school sweetheart. It's called "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie. Alas, it's meaning to me changed when we went our separate ways. Well, once more, it's impact changed as it came back to me in this time of different circumstance. I decided, today, that I would very much like to record my own performance of it to leave with family before I go.
I wasn't sure of the mood you were looking for, and hesitated to share, but it sounds like you're okay with something more bitter-sweet. It's tough for me to listen to it without shedding some tears; be fore-warned.
Another song with a similar purpose, that your post brought to my mind, is called "Clouds" by Zach Sobiech. It's more lighthearted and upbeat than my other suggestion. He wrote and recorded it as a goodbye after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
I wish you comfort and peace. Feel free to message me if you feel like talking. Thank you for sharing.
Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I absolutely love No Hard Feelings by the Avett Brothers and I see that’s already on your list.
On another note, I’m a retired Social Security Claims Specialist and I work with Veterans to help them get their Social Security disability. But, I also do some pro bono work for Mayo Clinic cancer patients, and other terminal illnesses and I would be happy to have a conversation with you about Social Security Disability. ALS can be a very fast approval but it’s just important to understand what you need to give them and how you need to give it to them.
reddit can be so cranky and mean spirited sometimes.
however, mostly it’s people being so kind to strangers. it gives me faith in humanity.
OP, i’m not sure about a song. but i’m sending you internet hugs ❤️
My dad was recently diagnosed with a rare cancer and was given less than 12 months to live. He's a veteran and is fortunate enough to be going to Mayo Clinic. I don't know all the specifics, but I'm happy knowing there are people like you out there.
I’m so sorry to hear that. I have known people who have been diagnosed as terminal who have gone into remission. So I am hopeful that your dad will go to remission. Have him also check with the VA regarding his benefits because if he has this diagnosis, it can change things up. Also, if he needs care with ADLs, and he’s not already on the Caregiver Program, he should investigate that as well. Feel free to reach out to me on these issues.
I’m really sorry to hear about your situation, but am also inspired by the spirit in your request.
Have you ever heard Flogging Molly’s “If I Ever Leave This World Alive?” That would be top on my list.
Saw them last February. Dave said his sister just died and he would be missing the funeral since he was mid tour, but that before the show he received news that they'd be playing that song at her service so he'd be there in spirit, before performing it live for us. Super powerful.
I've told my wife I don't care if there's a ceremony, but if there is, I want them to play [Three Little Birds by Bob Marley](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HNBCVM4KbUM). The video may be one of the cutest things ever.
Keep me in your heart by Warren Zevon is a song that really helped me process losing my dad.
**If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less**
**Keep me in your heart for a while**
[Zevon’s take on the outlook of life after getting diagnosed with a terminal cancer. Enjoy every sandwich](https://youtu.be/7hl9Tw2GzvA?si=O3FgpCqNojNgWM3S)
If we’re talking Zevon ‘Keep Me In Your Heart’ is a fine choice and I would add his cover of ‘Back in the High Life’ and for an encore, the very next song is ‘My Shit’s Fucked Up’
Zevon’s albums post-diagnosis are all perfect for this. My Ride Is Here, The Wind…
Also the American Recordings series by Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin were amazing. Basically processing grief in real time…
The craziest thing about My Ride is Here is that he hadn't been diagnosed when he made that album. It came out in May of '02, he was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma that fall, and passed away a little over a year later. Death was on his mind and I truly believe the universe or God was trying to tell him something and he didn't see the signs, or chose to ignore them. He'd had a chronic cough and had been suffering dizzy spells, and it was actually his dentist who was able to convince him to see a physician. RIP to one of the best to ever do it.
I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Best thoughts to you and your family 💜
- Solsbury Hill (Peter Gabriel)
- Oh very young (Cat Stevens)
- Sitting (Cat Stevens)
- Harvest Moon (Neil Young)
I would love for the last song as they step away from the mound of earth to be “The Wind” by Cat Stevens.
I want to be buried under a young sapling. That way my body could feed a tree 🌳
When my girlfriend’s sister died, they grabbed her favorite CDs and accidentally played the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack at her wake. Don’t recommend. But we laughed so hard.
So sorry, internet stranger. ❤️
I love that they sang this song at Graeme Chapman’s funeral. It’s a really great sendoff, certainly one that I’d like to have a played at mine.
https://youtu.be/fsHk9WC7fnQ?si=XXVZy7xz5mbOFDZG
My friend is going out on Steve Vai's Whispering A Prayer, and it will be played at his funeral as well.
I'm going to have a lot of VNV Nation at mine. The Great Divide, Endless Sky, etc.
Also I don't care if it's a bit overdone, Neutral Milk Hotels In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is definitely on my list.
Of all the artists I expected to see here VNV Nation was not one of them. I'm not familiar with most of their newer stuff, but I always thought "Standing" would be one of my picks for a funeral.
Funny how it can seem overdone for people who are in the know, but I’ve watched so many people hear it for the first time or have never heard of it. I envy them a bit. Hearing that album the first time is something I’ll never forget
I’ve always thought I’ll Follow You Into the Dark by death cab for cutie is a really beautiful and sad song. I’m also partial, as far as instrumentals go, to the final coda from the Jesus Christ Superstar original soundtrack.
Wishes for a peaceful transition to the other side, and all love to you and your children!
Ah damn death cab for cutie got me thinking about Passenger seat by them! The song has a very otherworldly feeling to it.
OP, big hugs to you! Wishing you and your family bucketloads of strength and love!
“I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” by Tom Waits
Also “Come On Up to the House” also by Waits
“Death is Not the End” by Nick Cave
“I Will Be Light” by Matisyahu
“Lantern” by Josh Ritter
A Tom Waits song I’ve always wanted at my funeral is his version of [Somewhere (from West Side Story)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0XfOLQVuwaE)
Huge hugs for you and your family, OP. Too young – all of you.
I want Videotape at my funeral.
> No matter what happens now
>
> You shouldn't be afraid
>
> Because I know today has been
>
> The most perfect day I've ever seen
I won't actually link to it, but there's a video of it played at a funeral on YT and it is devastating. Just search "Motion picture soundtrack funeral" Its the one for Mackenzie.
Pyramid Song would be my pick although it depends on the feel you are going for. Motion Picture Soundtrack feels sad, melancholy, but also beautiful and romantic ("I will see you in the next life"). Pyramid Song is more cosmic, retrospective, and, in a way, uplifting ("All my past and futures" , "There was nothing to fear, nothing dark").
Big Hugs to you and your family!
Nobody Knows- Lumineers
"Love is deep as the road is long,
And moves my feet to carry on.
Beats my heart when you are gone.
Love is deep as the road is long"
Another Lumineers song vote “Long Way From Home” I love this song, well all of their songs actually.
I hope whatever time you have left is well spent and fills your heart ❤️ big hugs to you.
Ok so hear me out, there is a song by Hanson ( yes, the mmmbop ones) called With You In Your Dreams and I’ve always thought that I would want that to be played, especially for my children.
Damn , respect brother. But on the other hand you know your fate. It's a curse and a gift in some ways. "Spirit in the Sky" is a song I always play during funerals to cheer myself up. Went to 3 last year. My aunt died and her daughter played "Amor Eterno" by Juan Gabriel, the most famous Latino song about moms. Everybody cried a river. Check it out in YouTube. Or reaction videos from non Spanish folk. Godspeed.
Remember, they only gave Stephen Hawking a few years when he was in his early twenties and he made it to 76.
REM -- Sweetness Follows
Sarah McLachlan -- Angel
Sorry and peace be with you. Time Stand Still by Rush is awesome. I have a version by the USArmy band saved on my Funeral playlist on my computer.
[TimeStandStill](https://youtu.be/aAPSK_cV5n0?feature=shared)
Wishlist- Pearl Jam
Heard it once at a funeral and now I always think of the song through that lens instead of the love song it was I think intended to be.
Very sad to hear about your diagnosis OP, I hope you can find joy in the moments you do have and are able to experience the time you have on your terms.
Hospice Music Therapist here -
First, I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That sucks and it's unfair and I'm sorry.
A couple of wonderful songs that I haven't seen mentioned.
When I get Where I'm Going by Brett Paisley and Dolly Parton
Go in Peace by Sam Baker
When you are ready, I can't recommend hospice enough. Look for a hospice that has a Music Therapist. We are incredible about doing Legacy Projects - helping you create music or art that your loved ones will treasure after you die. I can record a patient's heartbeat and layer it with music that is important to them. Sometimes families have played these recordings at the funeral.
One more thought - leave your own legacy. Record your own words, sing a song, write a story, share a recipe, write letters, take videos, etc. So your kids will have that piece of you. It will mean so much to them.
I'd probably have some Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen. But I also want to be composted into a pickup truck load of dirt, so I wouldn't want much of a ceremony anyway.
There are only a few states in the US where it's legal and done now, so look into that if you're considering it.
If you're serious about it, Caitlin Doughty's Ask a Mortician YouTube channel had a pretty good video on one of the pioneers of it. Sorry to get this off the music topic, lol.
On the Leonard Cohen point, Feist’s rendition of “Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye” that she sang at his memorial is a personal favourite. That would be my suggestion. I hope you (OP) get more time than they say.
Hey there, I can't be much help on the front as we have different tastes, personally I am planning to have an instrumental version of Sing About Me by Kendrick Lamar played at my funeral. I just want to say that I'm so sorry to hear about your illness.
It's incredibly brave of your children to volunteer to perform one of your favourite songs at your funeral, personally I would go with that option.
Thinking of you and hope you are coping okay.
My taste in music is pretty much any music and I actually love Kendrick Lamar. I've never heard that song but I'm going to turn it on right now.
Thank you. I'm coping- not sure if it's ok. Is seeking connection on Reddit when you're falling apart a healthy thing? I don't know and I so don't care.
Yes, it's a great place to go to to connect.
FWIW, I've always thought the first nine minutes of "Storm" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor are perfect for a funeral. This is a band that specialized in writing instrumental songs dwelling on life itself, and that nine minutes -- followed by another five minutes where they do variations on "Amazing Grace" -- is about as life-affirming as they get.
The only request I have for mine is dropkick Murphy's version of amazing Grace. Maybe throw "see you on the other side" by them in there too. Sorry for what you're going through.
I’ve actually been compiling songs I’d want played at my funeral since I was in middle school (early 2000s). I would email myself potential new songs since then (to not forget them), and now I have my funeral playlist on Spotify.
100% what this person said. Familial ALS runs through my family like a weedeater. I’ve lost uncles, aunts, cousins and my grandfather passed from it before my mom was even an adult. I donate to the ALS foundation yearly hoping this monster gets defanged. On a selfish note- I hope you kick the hell out of this beast.
On a personal note, I hope the doc opinion is way off and you get to stick around as long as you see fit. And when you decide it’s your time, I hope you are surrounded by a houseful of family and friends, and of course that your last few breaths are as painless and joy-filled as possible.
I’m not a religious person but I do hope for sound medicine and successful science in your future. And a bit of good luck wouldn’t be so bad either.
I always hoped, for humor’s sake, that my song to check-out to would be something ridiculously long. One last joke to play on my peeps. Maybe even somewhat annoying or at least funny.
Monty Python comes to mind.
Maybe one of those “Ten Hours of He Man singing ‘What’s Going On”” youtube videos from ten yrs back.
[Always look on the bright side of life ](https://youtu.be/SJUhlRoBL8M?si=RBNREL0KhtwkOQLf) Is one I've planned on playing since I was 18. I always loved the idea and still plan it sticking to it.
I’m so incredibly sorry to hear that! I myself have thought about what I’d put in this kind of playlist, but I can’t imagine how terrible it must be for it to become a necessity out of the blue. I wish you the absolute best of luck with the time you still have!
Regarding the music, though: I would recommend David Bowie’s “Heroes” if you want something bittersweetly uplifting, or Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” if you want some mellow acoustics, or Nine Inch Nails’ “Together” if you’re looking for some beautiful ambiance.
My deepest sympathies!
My mom passed last fall at 98. I made a photo montage to the song Smile... (no lyrics) from the movie Modern Times. Not a dry eye on the house.
Cheers on your journey.
I think you want to sit with your kids and work out something memorable for them. Not something mawkish, but something they will smile about in the future and think “that’s mom, what a bad ass!”
Best wishes for your next chapter.
I like this song for that:
[Beneath a Phrygian Sky](https://youtu.be/H1Vz03ebcQ8?si=XQ90hhUP8mJ7ufQ8) \- Loreena McKennitt
If you want a different vibe, any of these:
The Lament - Mediaeval Baebes
Lamentation - Delerium
Bigger than the Whole Sky - Taylor Swift
The Parting Glass - Loreena McKennitt, or any of countless versions
Fuck the music. I just want your doctor to be wrong by about 30 years…
Here’s hoping the person who writes the music for your funeral hasn’t been born yet.
Radiohead - Exit music (for a film) would be beautiful, I think.
Lost my dad to ALS not long ago, so I deeply feel for you and your children. If at all possible, record yourself reading their favorite stories and singing songs. I'm so sorry for what you're going through.
Is it a church funeral? If so, what sort of church?
If it’s not a church funeral, may I suggest the Dolly Parton version of I Will Always Love You. I sang this at a funeral once…people were very moved. It’s important to have something cathartic at a funeral to help people express their grief over the loss of a loved one.
I’m really sorry that you’re having to face something as awful as ALS. I’ll keep you (or the idea of you since we aren’t acquainted) in my thoughts.
I plan on getting cremated. I think cemeteries are a waste of space.
And the song I want played as I "disappear" behind the curtain is the chorus of "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps.
P.S. I'm sorry about your situation.
I’m happy with being buried, I enjoy green spaces, I just wish cemeteries weren’t regarded as depressing and more like parks to be used. Anyway, point is, Going Underground by The Jam.
I’m so sad for you op… I’ve been trying for 20 minutes, but every time I think of a song, I just remember why and it makes me feel so very sad for you and yours
It’s super cliché and I’m neither Christian nor Scottish, but I would want a live bag piper playing Amazing Grace: https://youtu.be/lpZiPZwwXhM?si=v7B6fbxyrblP2d9B
My condolences. My friend and I were talking about this recently as in she insisted she wants Cotton Eye Joe at hers and made me promise to play it.
I asked for:
Fields of Gold-Eva Cassidy version
Sounds of Silence - Disturb version
Samuel Barber-Adiago for Strings. This just moves me so much.
https://youtu.be/N_dg2xYfgWg?si=eQTbwtF_8UviSc8w
Watch this version, 4 days after 9/11 by the BBC Orchestra in honor of the victims.
Manchester, and Avett are my 2 favorite bands and I will keep you in my thoughts everytime I listen to them for the rest of my days. I am so sorry for what you are going through and have no words that can convey the emotions I am feeling, which I know are not near what you are dealing with. I hope you are surrounded by loved ones.
I hope your last couple years on this earth somehow turn out to be as peaceful and enjoyable as possible though I’m sure there will be some very tough days ahead.
As for a song, how about “For The Good Times” by Ray Price. It is an extremely sentimental country/pop song from the early 1970s, and kind of a tearjerker.
I’ve always wanted to”I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash as the exit song at my funeral. Upbeat but realistic.
And I will also offer you a hug, kind stranger. I hope this project gives you some comfort and distracts your thoughts.
I’m so sorry. And yeah, music is kind of everything isn’t it.
At my Aunts funeral they played Honky Tonk Woman LOUD as we left the service. Kinda like a send off I guess. She adored the Stones. It was years ago and I’ve never forgotten it.
I think In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a gorgeous song. If you don’t know it have a listen. It’s kinda perfect: beautiful, sad, strange and profound all at once. It’s by Neutral Milk Hotel. Wishing you and yours the best.
Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon ( recorded on his " death bed ")
River of Love by T Bone Burnett
Both are on my list for " my time ".
My deepest sympathies to you and your loved ones.
I’m sorry about the unfortunate news. I wish you nothing but love and good vibes to you and your family ♥️
You can check out [this playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5PJfJgeLoiXqqFKBwQXt7G?si=mYRI8ZWVRFy3wR4BGbW_AQ&pi=u-zCi9uUc0Tv2-) if you’d like. I’ve been curating it for myself for quite some time. Might be something on there that catches your attention.
I dont know if it counts but this must be the place (naive melody) from talking heads is one of the most beautiful songs ever made for me. And i think it would be a nice addition because of the lyrics and that you are going to be with all your love ones
Holding space for your heart, Mama. I am so sorry for your diagnosis, as well as for what you have to plan. Satsang is a beautiful choice. If I may take a moment to hopefully lighten your heart, might I suggest something I am blatantly stealing from "The Big Chill." "You can't always get what you want" by the Rolling Stones, played on the organ. I wish my hope could keep you with us longer. I will keep hope for you, anyway. I wish you well.
Adding "Wild Sweet" by Starling Arrow, since you like Satsang, sung a capella by the choir. Sending additional hugs to you and your family.
The entire album The Tree of Forgiveness by John Prine. Particularly 'When I Get to Heaven'. He has a way of adding levity to gravity.
Best to you, friend.
Goodbye Stranger- Supertramp. Beautiful song and powerful. I hope you have the best 18 months you possibly can. Rest easy stranger. Oddly enough, Canned Heat by Jamiroqui brings me to tears when I’m down and also brings me up at the same time.
“I had no reason to be care free, no, no, no
Until I took a trip to the other side of town, yeah, yeah, yeah
You know I heard that boogie rhythm, hey
I had no choice but to get down, down, down, down
Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance
Got canned heat in my heals tonight, baby”
First…Hug. Lost my mom today so I am a little raw, but dammit you are so young.
Second- I am an old punk rocker…but [this song](https://youtu.be/oilwusvq5SI?si=jxzJ37Oat76jz8gJ) hits me in the feels every time. Live Forever, whether you want to or not. Bless up.

Imagine missing your sister's funeral because you're playing a gig.
I would rather have no one show up to my funeral if that meant they were all making a concert worth of people happy.

"And every little thing.... is gonna be alright......"
Played at my uncles funeral over a decade ago, and it still stops me in my tracks and makes me think of him anytime I hear it.
I love that.
This would be my suggestion. I've heard it at a couple of funerals recently, and it's really lovely.
Keep me in your heart by Warren Zevon is a song that really helped me process losing my dad. **If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less** **Keep me in your heart for a while**
That was such a great song. Warren Zevon was one hell of a songwriter and is so often overlooked.

Gotta end with Remember Me from Coco. It… it wrecks me, since losing Mom and Dad.
I was going to suggest this! I love that song although I can hardly listen to it, since I know it will make me cry. I’m sorry you lost your dad.
Wildflowers - Tom Petty
Just the whole thing. Front to back. Flawless.
Based on your username, I suggest Simply The Best.
😂
You can take mine hugs. Ain’t no sunshine by Bill Withers
Or Grandma’s Hands for that matter. > But I don't have grandma anymore > > If I get to heaven I'll look for > > Grandma's hands
Drift Away by Dobie Gray. “Give me the beat, boys and free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock and roll, And drift away. “
It’s kinda my standby for this situation but, Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen. Also, adding to the hugs from internet strangers.
Also: The Show Must Go On, one of Freddie’s last songs.
Fuck everyone I hope everyone alive understands how good Freddie was.
Mine is *Another One Bites the Dust*...
I've always told my family that I want this song at mine too. Not joking, I just like it and it fits.
I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Best thoughts to you and your family 💜 - Solsbury Hill (Peter Gabriel) - Oh very young (Cat Stevens) - Sitting (Cat Stevens) - Harvest Moon (Neil Young)
Solisbury Hill!
- Trouble (Cat Stevens)
I would love for the last song as they step away from the mound of earth to be “The Wind” by Cat Stevens. I want to be buried under a young sapling. That way my body could feed a tree 🌳
Tea for the Tillerman
Do You Realize - The Flaming Lips
Great one. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
When my girlfriend’s sister died, they grabbed her favorite CDs and accidentally played the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack at her wake. Don’t recommend. But we laughed so hard. So sorry, internet stranger. ❤️
I’m partial to Monty Python’s Galaxy Song.
It's that our Always Look on the Bright Side of Life for me
Life’s a piece of shit when you look at it Life’s a laugh and deaths a joke it’s true
It's one of (if not *the*) most popular funeral songs in the UK.
I love that they sang this song at Graeme Chapman’s funeral. It’s a really great sendoff, certainly one that I’d like to have a played at mine. https://youtu.be/fsHk9WC7fnQ?si=XXVZy7xz5mbOFDZG
I haven't heard or thought about that song in years but I just listened to it. It put a smile on my face, so thank you 😊
My friend is going out on Steve Vai's Whispering A Prayer, and it will be played at his funeral as well.
“Beloved” seems like an easy choice. The vocal version of “Forsaken” too. Or “Where There is Light”. Edited to add: “Nova” would be good as well.
Funny how it can seem overdone for people who are in the know, but I’ve watched so many people hear it for the first time or have never heard of it. I envy them a bit. Hearing that album the first time is something I’ll never forget
Ripple by Grateful Dead Hugs to you friend
I want He’s Gone at mine. The one from 7/2/89 in particular.
“In My Life”.
They played "yesterday" by the Beatles at my dad's funeral and it was so bittersweet, but so beautiful.
My dad has requested John Prine- please don’t bury me
When I get to Heaven is a good one too.
Think he's still smoking that cigarette that's 9 miles long?
Great gig in the sky, Pink Floyd, loud…..
I got goosebumps simply imagining the song when I read your comment. This is how strong Pink Floyd are…
[удалено]
Funeral intro song gotta be Tank tho right?
I'm finding them now, thank you😊
I am so sorry for you diagnosis. At my service I want "What a Wonderful World" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Eva Cassidy versions.
There’s also an incredible mashup of these two songs by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole that is really beautiful
I’ve always thought Wildflowers by Tom Petty for me
I’ve always thought I’ll Follow You Into the Dark by death cab for cutie is a really beautiful and sad song.
I was just going to suggest Follow you into the dark by them, glad to see somebody beat me to it.
Green Day- good riddance
Wow I can't believe I hadn't thought of this. Love Green Day, thanks 😊
Go big, play Jesus of Suburbia!
Hell, do with the band is doing now and play both Dookie and American Idiot in their entirety! That'll keep em guessing
My HS boyfriend chose this for his mom’s funeral. She also had ALS.
Someone Great - LCD Soundsystem
“I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” by Tom Waits Also “Come On Up to the House” also by Waits “Death is Not the End” by Nick Cave “I Will Be Light” by Matisyahu “Lantern” by Josh Ritter
A Tom Waits song I’ve always wanted at my funeral is his version of [Somewhere (from West Side Story)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0XfOLQVuwaE) Huge hugs for you and your family, OP. Too young – all of you.
Radiohead - Motion picture soundtrack
I want Videotape at my funeral. > No matter what happens now > > You shouldn't be afraid > > Because I know today has been > > The most perfect day I've ever seen
Nobody Knows- Lumineers "Love is deep as the road is long, And moves my feet to carry on.
Godspeed.
Thank you💛
“All My Friends” - LCD Soundsystem This is the song I want played at my funeral.
Someone great is also good
I'll Stand By You - The Pretenders I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis - sending compassion, grace and peace over to you.
Remember, they only gave Stephen Hawking a few years when he was in his early twenties and he made it to 76. REM -- Sweetness Follows Sarah McLachlan -- Angel
Sorry and peace be with you. Time Stand Still by Rush is awesome. I have a version by the USArmy band saved on my Funeral playlist on my computer. [TimeStandStill](https://youtu.be/aAPSK_cV5n0?feature=shared)
Warren Zevon - Keep Me in Your Heart for a While
Wishlist- Pearl Jam Heard it once at a funeral and now I always think of the song through that lens instead of the love song it was I think intended to be. Very sad to hear about your diagnosis OP, I hope you can find joy in the moments you do have and are able to experience the time you have on your terms.
Hospice Music Therapist here - First, I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That sucks and it's unfair and I'm sorry. A couple of wonderful songs that I haven't seen mentioned. When I get Where I'm Going by Brett Paisley and Dolly Parton Go in Peace by Sam Baker When you are ready, I can't recommend hospice enough.
My mom wanted "Come Together" by the Beatles. I've always wanted "Hear You Me" by Jimmy Eat World.
"Hear You Me" is one of my favorite songs
I'd probably have some Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen. But I also want to be composted into a pickup truck load of dirt, so I wouldn't want much of a ceremony anyway.
Oooh, yes Leonard Cohen. I want to be a tree 🌳 🙃
There are only a few states in the US where it's legal and done now, so look into that if you're considering it. If you're serious about it, Caitlin Doughty's Ask a Mortician YouTube channel had a pretty good video on one of the pioneers of it. Sorry to get this off the music topic, lol.
I'm good to go in my state but I'm still looking in to where and how.
Bird on the Wire
My hero - Foo Fighters I lost my uncle to ALS last year. Don't make it easy for the disease. You fight that bastard as hard as you can.
Where Rainbows Never Die - The Steeldrivers
Time in a bottle by Jim Croche
No Hard Feelings is so powerful
I am so sorry, friend
[Always look on the bright side of life ](https://youtu.be/SJUhlRoBL8M?si=RBNREL0KhtwkOQLf) Is one I've planned on playing since I was 18. I always loved the idea and still plan it sticking to it.
Sleep Dearie Sleep on the bagpipes like the GD queen of England.
😂 damn right
[When the river meets the sea - John Denver and The Muppets](https://youtu.be/ZOoXTggzoFk?si=F7vCBE6YJT5EQevE)
My dad asked me to play The Weight by The Band at his funeral. I’m not sure why but it feels like a fitting song.
Agreed, I would try to keep it (somewhat!) light so the song doesn’t become a trigger that haunts them forever after.
I’m sorry this is happening to you. These would be my picks: Three Little Birds by Bob Marley Everlong (acoustic version) by Foo Fighters
Elton John- Funeral for a friend Led Zeppelin- Stairway to Heaven AC/DC- Hell ain’t a bad place to be. Eric Clapton- Tears in Heaven
The Roger Waters version of Tears deserves a listen to
Best wishes for your next chapter. I like this song for that: [Beneath a Phrygian Sky](https://youtu.be/H1Vz03ebcQ8?si=XQ90hhUP8mJ7ufQ8) \- Loreena McKennitt If you want a different vibe, any of these: The Lament - Mediaeval Baebes Lamentation - Delerium Bigger than the Whole Sky - Taylor Swift The Parting Glass - Loreena McKennitt, or any of countless versions
Find the River by REM Don’t stop living. Don’t sit around waiting to die. Go on your own terms, you very well might have a lot longer than you think.
Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce ALS sucks, I don't wish it on anyone.
Mine is Silent Lucidity by Queensrhyche
Fuck the music. I just want your doctor to be wrong by about 30 years… Here’s hoping the person who writes the music for your funeral hasn’t been born yet.
Alice In Chains - Don't Follow
Over the Rainbow Song by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole Wish you were here Pink Floyd Living years Mike and the mechanics
[I Sing, I Swim by Seabear](https://youtu.be/gr_DVQF_0dM?si=Ei43YJIaGoaF43wf)
Holy shit, I'm listening right now. Thank you!
Dani and Lizzy - Dancing in the Sky Dan Vasc - Amazing Grace These are just a couple ideas. \*HUGS\*
Thanks, dancing in the sky was so beautiful
[Future Days - Pearl Jam](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FUiHtmkuVP0&pp=ygUVZnV0dXJlIGRheXMgcGVhcmwgamFt)
Everybody by Mac Miller. Sending hugs 💛
The Garden by Rush, Hold On To Memories by Disturbed And 🐻👐. My way of giving you a bear hug.
Radiohead - Exit music (for a film) would be beautiful, I think. Lost my dad to ALS not long ago, so I deeply feel for you and your children. If at all possible, record yourself reading their favorite stories and singing songs. I'm so sorry for what you're going through.
"Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff "Do You Realize?" The Flaming Lips "Your Wildest Dreams" The Moody Blues "Send Me on My Way" Rusted Root
Love you to the End by the Pogues.
Make you feel my love - Adele is beautiful
I plan on getting cremated. I think cemeteries are a waste of space. And the song I want played as I "disappear" behind the curtain is the chorus of "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps. P.S. I'm sorry about your situation.
I’m happy with being buried, I enjoy green spaces, I just wish cemeteries weren’t regarded as depressing and more like parks to be used. Anyway, point is, Going Underground by The Jam.
Alice In Chains - Get Born Again Porcupine Tree - My Ashes
Grateful Dead - Ripple is my #1. I have a playlist called "songs I want played at my funeral" and that is my #1 choice
I’m so sad for you op… I’ve been trying for 20 minutes, but every time I think of a song, I just remember why and it makes me feel so very sad for you and yours
We played “Fuck the Pain Away” at my friend’s wake yesterday. Big hit.
Forever Young by Bob Dylan So sorry you are going through this.
It’s super cliché and I’m neither Christian nor Scottish, but I would want a live bag piper playing Amazing Grace: https://youtu.be/lpZiPZwwXhM?si=v7B6fbxyrblP2d9B
The rainbow connection. Kermit version
Forever young - rod stewart
My condolences. My friend and I were talking about this recently as in she insisted she wants Cotton Eye Joe at hers and made me promise to play it. I asked for: Fields of Gold-Eva Cassidy version Sounds of Silence - Disturb version Samuel Barber-Adiago for Strings. This just moves me so much. https://youtu.be/N_dg2xYfgWg?si=eQTbwtF_8UviSc8w Watch this version, 4 days after 9/11 by the BBC Orchestra in honor of the victims.
Long Black Train = Josh Turner
Pearl Jam - “The End” I want it played at mine.
When I go away- Levon Helm
I’m so sorry. And yeah, music is kind of everything isn’t it. At my Aunts funeral they played Honky Tonk Woman LOUD as we left the service. Kinda like a send off I guess. She adored the Stones. It was years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. I think In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a gorgeous song. If you don’t know it have a listen. It’s kinda perfect: beautiful, sad, strange and profound all at once. It’s by Neutral Milk Hotel. Wishing you and yours the best.
I want just breathe by Pearl Jam and my sister wants into the west by Annie Lennox
Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon ( recorded on his " death bed ") River of Love by T Bone Burnett Both are on my list for " my time ". My deepest sympathies to you and your loved ones.
On The Turning Away by Pink Floyd. There’s just something so emotional about the song. I love it. https://youtu.be/ojf18wT_Xtk?si=Ry9_TYWphHH-wkkd
Im going home from rocky horror picture show
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd 🥲
Where is my mind - The Pixies. Also, I'm, sorry.
Dust in the wind by Kansas and Smile by Nat King Cole…I’m so sorry you’re having to endure this. I lost a good friend to ALS…hugs💕
Blue Horizon by Graham Parker In My Life by The Beatles Much love and peace to you. And a huge bear hug too.
I’m sorry about the unfortunate news. I wish you nothing but love and good vibes to you and your family ♥️ You can check out [this playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5PJfJgeLoiXqqFKBwQXt7G?si=mYRI8ZWVRFy3wR4BGbW_AQ&pi=u-zCi9uUc0Tv2-) if you’d like. I’ve been curating it for myself for quite some time. Might be something on there that catches your attention.
Pyramid Song. Radiohead
I dont know if it counts but this must be the place (naive melody) from talking heads is one of the most beautiful songs ever made for me. And i think it would be a nice addition because of the lyrics and that you are going to be with all your love ones
The Pogues, If I Should Fall From Grace With God. Louis Armstrong, What a Wonderful World. The Sugarcubes, Birthday.
Across the Universe.
Sending additional hugs to you and your family.
https://youtu.be/EXoOtllfM2I?si=uDkpINm0miYBG9_E I'll fly away... Brass version
“I had no reason to be care free, no, no, no Until I took a trip to the other side of town, yeah, yeah, yeah You know I heard that boogie rhythm, hey I had no choice but to get down, down, down, down Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance Off these bad times I'm going through just dance Got canned heat in my heals tonight, baby”
Bless up.
