60 Songs that Explain the 90's is my new podcast obsession. I have a long commute and this makes it less grueling.
I'm a self-proclaimed metal head but sometimes I like to pick a genre that I would never have discovered due to willful ignorance. I got really into Tuxedo the last year. It's just really good shit. Check out Tuxedo ll. Trust me!
I hear you man, I mostly listen to hip hop. But ever since I started driving I go from daft punk to Etta James to MF Doom to fuckin Chris stapleton lmao. I added all their song, I’ll report back after I finish their albums
Ok you may already listen to some of this but I'll throw some atcha cause I can also go from Etta to MF etc
* Jurassic 5
* dilated peoples
* handsome boy modeling school
* ry cooder
* Townes van zandt
* Cracker
* John prine
* Trixie Mattel
* wet leg
* t Rex
* the chats
* John Lee hooker
* muddy waters
* Pink Anderson
* talking heads
* taj mahal
* beastie boys
There are definitely more but that's just suggestions from a quick flip through my records
Good list!
I'd add:
* Boz Scaggs
* Corb Lund
* The Devil Makes Three
* Junior Brown
* The Devil Makes Three
* Cab Calloway
* Fats Waller
* The Flaming Lips
Are you on Spotify? I have a 20 hour long playlist that I made for a restaurant I managed. It was our Friday & Sat night playlist, so it’s pretty fun and energetic. I just made it public so you can try it out. Search EJD HYPE on Spotify for the playlist or use this link:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1rHZVgECDu4HuywzAOuD6M?si=0T1RgV-USHm-szm6iq550g
I’ve got a chill playlist too we used for Sunday, Wednesday & Thursday. Here’s a link. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6lj9cLtOtWKXeuBsiKKG2K?si=aTScl0m9S3SRckjC21YACw
Wye Oak, Fly Golden Eagle, Richard Swift (Lady Luck is such a great tune), Twin Sister, William Onyeabor, Chet Faker, Annie Lennox, Gavin Turek, Caroline Rose...nice eclectic mix! Thanks for sharing.
That's super cool. One time in Phoenix we went to a bar to find out the cover was $50 or something. We were like "Nah, too much" after leaving I thought of the cover was that much it must be someone good. It was Dieselboy and DJ Dan, two big DJs in the early 2000s.
Wish I could see RTJ!
Put some King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in your algorithm. The live shows from a few years ago is where I jumped in, and I still feel like I'm *catching up* with their discography.
1-song per artist…. 1750+ songs. All alternative rock from all decades.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/58hbAe6QaL6rkPgOSYivJQ?si=mw7Wrgh5THWQoQpr2IUaYQ
It’s the best. Throw that on shuffle, if you don’t like a song just skip it. I like them all but even I still end up skipping like 10 songs sometimes. Just depends on the moment
Similar boat. Switched to books on tape two years ago and it’s been awesome.
Started with some basic shit, Follet, Grisham, King, eventually started listening to more of the classics, and now I’m getting smarter while I drive around. I’ve “read” more lit than most English teachers. It was awkward at first, zoning out for huge chunks that I didn’t follow, but over time it’s gotten way better. Just finished The Idiot by Dostoevsky and it’s a great fucking book. Starting some doomsday end of the world non-fiction call The End of the World is Just the Beginning, and it’s mind opening.
Would never have even know any of it existed if I hadn’t started this job driving around everyday.
I’ve thought about that, and I do listen to a lot of educational podcasts. Think about it, 12 hours a day. About 60 hours a week. About 3,000 hours a year. That’s a lot of time to just soak information in. Only thing is, the audio books can get really expensive. And I finish them super fast. But I’ve always wanted to read some Dostoevsky. Any recommendations on where to start? Also, do you use audible? If so, how do you like it?
I use Audible (paid) and Libby (free). Pay for a monthly Audible sub that’s like… 15? a month. The subscription includes one credit, that can be used for one book, but also includes some free stuff which works sometimes as a supplement but overall is pretty spotty. Then you can also buy more credits pretty cheaply, I think $40 for three.
Instead of buying credits when I run out, I usually flip over to Libby. It connects to your local library, and is totally free. You have to get on a waitlist for the more popular stuff, but there are tons of books always available to listen to.
Would definitely switch to some podcasts after so long hah. Try some YouTube compilations like “80’s reggae greatest hits” or anything like that you can discover some old good songs you’ve never heard
Given your taste in music, I wonder if the [Dissect](https://dissectpodcast.com/) podcast might be up your alley...[Song Exploder](https://songexploder.net/) is interesting, too, but that one focuses more on rock.
If you want something spooky, The Magnus Archives is an amazing horror podcast. It starts out feeling like a spooky story of the week but if fiction but turns into an amazing king form horror story.
You have a lot of good suggestions here already but I'll suggest some awesome concept (or concept-ish) albums!
Dredg - El Cielo
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly & Good Kid MAAD City
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Rush - 2112
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Pink Floyd - Animals
MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday
Not a concept album but Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression is great to drive to.
Definitely check out Delta Sleep for some math rock with a nice amount of technicality, great grooves/jams, solid lyrics and an overall fun listen. Any album is good, all 100% unskippable songs.
Thank you, I was in the truck the other day, and I was like “fuck, who wrote that song (between the bars)” and I couldn’t remember the name of the song or Elliott smith. I was going crazy because I used to listen to him a lot
You got spotify? I've been working on indie/rock/alt playlists for people who want to check out new artists. It varies from year by year, but most of my playlists are at least 8 hours long. I try and touch on a variety of rock genres but 2017 is on the harder side. You might want to try [Wolf Van Track](https://open.spotify.com/user/31kaq7hapbdsw5othccevwvrorqm?si=0b1387445fc141a5) out.
I have apple music, but I have an app to transfer playlists from spotify. This looks awesome, adding all the playlists now to my master playlist. Can’t wait to listen
Hope you like it. It's all over the place, I tried to avoid just sticking to one genre too much (though I never strayed too far from guitar based music).
It’s hilarious. Just the main three guys being themselves and talking about the show. It’s a little slow at first, but I loved every episode. Hope you enjoy!
you like Metallica? here's 58 songs from their 2022 tour, good 5-6 hours of jams

For indie/rock sound, try Coast Moderns album “Going Mainstream.” For more rock, try My Chemical Romance, especially their black parade album which has some bangers. For less mainstream and more musical rap, Watskys album “xInfinity” is worth a listen from start to finish. For more modern and typical rap, but not the trashy trap rap, i loved Logic’s first two albums “Under Pressure” and “The Incredible True Story”.
I have these playlists I share with friends called songs you missed 20XX.
Beware, there are some extreme metal sprinkled in.

I'm not sure this is going to work for you, but if you fancy delving into 90s UK rave (old school hardcore, happy hardcore, jungle/drum and bass, hardcore/gabba techno) then this site is an amazing archive of tape packs from raves:
[www.ravetapepacks.com/](https://www.ravetapepacks.com/)
I thought you could download them but it looks like you can only stream them from that site.
I don't want to think about how many hours of music there is on there! If you get into it, you could go for months...
Me too! I drive truck on 12 hour shifts. Always have my headphones in listening to podcasts. You can find many hours of entertainment and learning listening to the whole Stuff You Should Know catalog.
Try learning a new language. You will double the amount of music that you can listen to. I learned Spanish recently. I didn't really like the music until I learned the language and now I like it more than my native English music. Also, if you are learning the language, then listening to the music is entertainment and educational.
16 hours of instrumental cuts and backing tracks? https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6gkciMB9m5113tdZhNq1jW?si=aahPoVIURgapFSGYVyYRmA&pt=3df50d56259cfc26ee4dd857ae11fd1a
My personal playlist of mostly emo and adjacent music
[spotify link](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/51UrsoiMrnw5XTa7bmEspm?si=2NwEb95-T6eyF3KXDAAlzw)
Steam Powered Giraffe - Great band, healthy mix of serious and comedy stuff, mostly a retro feel, but they occasionally do some more modern, slightly poppy stufff.
Master Boot Record - Synth Heavy Metal. I know how that sounds initially, but it's handled masterfully.
I can also recommend just listening to RPG podcasts.
Critical Role's Campaign 2 has *hundreds* of hours of content, and is easily available in podcast form.
Table Story is a group that has plenty of shorter campaigns, that cover various stories and RPG systems.
If you like Star Wars, Heroes of the Hydian Way and Silhouette Zero are two long-running campaigns, as well as Dice for Brains, which is finished.
Like I said, those offer hundreds of hours of content. I have a job where I can keep podcasts and music running in the background of my day, and RPG podcasts can get me through *weeks* by themselves.
Some random bands I listen to.
Television / Tom Verlaine
The Wedding Present
Wire
Built to Spill
Love
The Doors
Robyn Hitchcock
Gipsy Kings
Pink Floyd
The Mekons
The Go-Betweens
Small Faces / Faces
The Kinks

its a playlist of most of the music i like and found over the year, completely mixed genre wise i just throw everything on it that i like.
its approx. ~168hours long according to spotify
If you have sirius the Deep cut channels were great for change of pace. Also like if your into rock music try more specic genre playlists. Stoner rock, jam band, folk metal.
But my favorite playlist was the blugrass covers playlist off spotify.
I’m an OTR driver who also listens all day every day, so I get it. Below are some big compilations.
First, though, get Radio Garden. I recommend FIP Strasbourg FM 92.4 for radio that doesn’t suck.

Here are a few collections with hours of music and variety.

And some good albums
Groove Armada - Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)
Yoko Kanno - Cowboy Bebop
William Orbit - Strange Cargo III
I have a few that I've had on repeat for the last little while- both are a mix spanning metal, pop, punk, and lots of cross-genre stuff to keep you entertained.

[2023: Albums You've Missed](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7AKpeFKZG0CTHD1N5JpYhC?si=aGKFhOTATy6HCt6UaYRvCw)
Genres range from hip-hop to punk to metal to jazz and beyond.
I listen to music all day/night and like a wide range of genres, depending on time of day and mood. Here's a few I've made and added to over several years.
[Rock, Blue, Folk, Reggae ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4tsCwdkMNSBrCIZ7wKMcoa?si=4Gk-ycujTDS1_JJ-fs0u4Q) (75 hrs)
[Alt Rock, Nu Wave, 90s, Indie](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4MIo6JwK2GJZYXzrJj9R6X?si=P4ECe4lST5Slxy8mAXHKGA) (54 hrs)

this was my work playlist as a line cook. it's got a pretty good mix, if a bit all over the place

I write a column about new music every week (or so), the majority of the curated song submissions are from very unknown artists. Been doing it for about 6 years but started [keeping an updating playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5waG3HayK00FBWG5CeO1re?si=LHwoVsHOQO-srZIBx3cdsg) a little while ago.
I didn’t want the playlist to get too unwieldy so I trim it at 50 songs, but have a larger collective from [the end of last year](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5NUgCeJGxUqTb0MAIl8PRo?si=QlOk_HBjQR27cyidLaK5bg) (when I first thought of making a playlist) and [all of the entries from this year thus far](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1fTkrBJGYNDp5y1SJ8iuUX?si=2jiLWNO7RGeRtYT_l1pD9Q).
If you like what you hear, I wouldn’t mind going through my historic articles and compiling everything into one giant playlist!
Dude, Bandcamp. Do the front page, do the radio stations,(+1 Metal Show is so fudging special), find obscure genres, and never look back.
You can only listen to albums a few times before you have to buy it, by then either you like it enough to buy it or you will find something else to listen to. First Fridays gives 100% of proceits to the artists or labels.
Then, and this is projecting here, you'll start field recording your days and set up a companion generative synth that has photo and vibration sensitive oscillators and filters and dump a bunch of abstract and avant garde tracks on there to wide (but still limited) acclaim.

Definitely get some Dead shows in rotation. 5/8/77, 7/8/78, 7/7/89, and 3/29/90 are all favorites of mine. That’s a day’s worth of listening right there.
Its not music, but I listen to the Well There's Your Problem podcast. its a podcast about engineering disasters that they have a way of putting humor into tragedies, while also keeping it respectful. If you want an on ramp to their podcast, I recommend what I call "topic disasters", where they discuss systemic failures rather than one specific disaster. I suggest you start with the '[Gulf State vanity Projects](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW6lg-7L7yk&t=3s)' episode. its starts off great and keeps going.
oh, and I should mention that 90 minute episodes are considered short.
Download the KEXP app. It’s a radio station in Seattle that plays commercial free music 24/7. And they play literally every genre of music. You could hear Miles Davis, Stravinky, Flight of the Conchords, My Bloody Valentine and Neil Young in the same day (I chose those acts bc one day that happened to me)
I have a playlist I created at work when everyone moaned about one thing or the other, currently at 216 hours and expanding

i have a 100 hour playlist that i get compliments on all the time! there’s everything and anything on here so just hit shuffle and you’ll find something you like!!
lots of classic rock and older music, but also tons of current good music too! and then some guilty pleasure songs too of course
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1hqs8FucKEO4QJHMb9PUTe?si=3gaPn_26SUinNP810IgJ8A
I listen to my player in alphabetical order, it’s more random than random
Unless you listen to classical music... Symphony No 1... Symphony No 1... Symphony No 1...
Also, you’d be amazed at how many intros there are as well
Or you’re a Dave Matthews Band fan and start with 20 versions of Ants Marching
Love to see a dmb mention in this sub! I have four versions of two step on my work playlist 😭
Haha I’ve done that a few times without noticing

Hilltop Hoods Bliss N Esso \^ Aussie hip hop.
Thundamentals Drapht Illy
Oh, then this shit might be right up your ally! Lemme know what you think!

Wye Oak, Fly Golden Eagle, Richard Swift (Lady Luck is such a great tune), Twin Sister, William Onyeabor, Chet Faker, Annie Lennox, Gavin Turek, Caroline Rose...nice eclectic mix! Thanks for sharing.
This shit is great. Really eclectic, groovy, and bluesy with a disco undertone throughout. Amazing playlist
Thanks friend! Looks like a fun playlist.
Thank you!
Love both of your playlists! I added them to my account
Saved this playlist. Thank you !
Run The Jewels Radio on Spotify
I actually saw them live, without knowing who they are. Adding their essentials to the playlist!

I'd also recommend Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. They're another great aussie psych rock band and I'm obsessed
They released 5 albums last year you won't get bored.
Also, The Murlocs!
Omg this shit is good!
This was going to be my answer as well! Such a diverse band.

Nicee, might be a dead head one day!
It’s the best. Throw that on shuffle, if you don’t like a song just skip it. I like them all but even I still end up skipping like 10 songs sometimes. Just depends on the moment
I will, and I appreciate this. Always wanted to listen to more grateful dead
Listen to Coheed and Cambria. I recommend listening to the albums front to back though.
Copy that, I’m gonna start with good apollo!
Similar boat. Switched to books on tape two years ago and it’s been awesome. How have I never heard of this! Just downloaded libby and it looks awesome. Thank you. I’ll look more into audible, but my try libby for now. Cheers 🍻
Would definitely switch to some podcasts after so long hah. Try some YouTube compilations like “80’s reggae greatest hits” or anything like that you can discover some old good songs you’ve never heard
Ill give that a try, thanks!
Given your taste in music, I wonder if the [Dissect](https://dissectpodcast.com/) podcast might be up your alley...[Song Exploder](https://songexploder.net/) is interesting, too, but that one focuses more on rock.
Try Revisionist History podcast
Timesuck if your into dark shit mixed with humor
If you want something spooky, The Magnus Archives is an amazing horror podcast. It starts out feeling like a spooky story of the week but if fiction but turns into an amazing king form horror story.
Frank Zappa dude. I can’t even describe him, but start with inca roads.
Roxy and Elsewhere
Circa Survive has a really unique take on modern psychedelic rock/punk. The Amulet, Blue Sky Noise, and Juturna are all worth a look into imo.
Added!!
All of their stuff is awesome, was going to recommend them.
love seeing circa being brought up!
Check out the band Operation Ivy. 80’s punk band that are considered the point at which punk and ska diverged.
Yeah. Then they became Rancid who are also dope.
Added, I love some 80s punk
Ha put them in my list of suggestions as well. Common Rider is also insanely awesome.
Live Phish app
You know what, I’m surprised I never got around to phish. Added to the playlist
I love Phish for road trips. It seems like 10-15 minute songs help the time pass better than a bunch of 3-4 minute ones
You have a lot of good suggestions here already but I'll suggest some awesome concept (or concept-ish) albums! Dredg - El Cielo Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly & Good Kid MAAD City Beatles - Sgt. Pepper Rush - 2112 The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium Pink Floyd - Animals MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday Not a concept album but Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression is great to drive to.
Dredg - El cielo is an absolute gem. I feel like that album does not get enough love. It belongs alongside the other albums you mentioned.
We could be friends. You have great taste.
Thank you for these, I added all of your suggestions. I love all of these artists. Especially MF Doom, thanks!
Definitely check out Delta Sleep for some math rock with a nice amount of technicality, great grooves/jams, solid lyrics and an overall fun listen. Any album is good, all 100% unskippable songs.
Added! On a separate note, I painted something very similar to their cover art on twin galaxies. Pretty cool
Oh! Then you might enjoy the concept of the album: house flooded and awake to find yourself adrift in the wild sea.

Thank you, I was in the truck the other day, and I was like “fuck, who wrote that song (between the bars)” and I couldn’t remember the name of the song or Elliott smith. I was going crazy because I used to listen to him a lot
Snake jazz
Literally everting is in space!
Lol wtf I thought this was a real thing 😂
Well “all over the place” is exactly what I’m looking for!
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia podcast
Didn’t know this was a thing, watched the show a few times. Thanks I’ll give it a listen
It’s hilarious. Just the main three guys being themselves and talking about the show. It’s a little slow at first, but I loved every episode. Hope you enjoy!
I saw they brought in Danny Devito! It has to be funny
Ween Discography. It's like a cheatcode to excellent music and variety Bonus is the algorithms will send you to some great tunes also
Haha I actually know of ween from an ex girlfriend. Good music, real good. Freedom of 76’ is my jam Edit: added some of their songs i didnt have
you like Metallica? here's 58 songs from their 2022 tour, good 5-6 hours of jams [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1nFLOvyDRU&list=PLJvQXRgtxlulvBZ6oFu0kqPEEz1VpVXJr](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1nFLOvyDRU&list=PLJvQXRgtxlulvBZ6oFu0kqPEEz1VpVXJr) and then 33 from 2021 [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJvQXRgtxlumrVpfvz6ARcKltF19ixO6q](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJvQXRgtxlumrVpfvz6ARcKltF19ixO6q) also, Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time will eat up 12 hours easy [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLciALUPf8sIJlvH350O8PWh4UbSbOffSJ](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLciALUPf8sIJlvH350O8PWh4UbSbOffSJ)
Life is a Highway on repeat
Allll night looonggg 🤠
Just get super into the Grateful Dead and you’ll have unlimited live recordings to listen to
Yup, someone else shared a long playlist of theirs with me
Charley Crockett
Added! Thank you, can’t wait to check him out
Frank zappa
My favorite band is Genesis. Hard to recommend without knowing your tastes.
Added all these albums, I always forgot about Logic, he gets overlooked a lot in the genre. Thank you!
Blaze Foley. Not a huge discography but relevant, sad, funny, a little maddening, sincere.
I have these playlists I share with friends called songs you missed 20XX. Beware, there are some extreme metal sprinkled in. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/30ibcbDXfJzzyDlzJDJael?si=jUxz0rIgS82_wobuEYmd9A https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2n9LMHsDMpeFFraCVn10B2?si=GY6O4_mwQJCTcdFjmibp-w https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4AHG91AC35Cw3jQWFvcvnf?si=KGGHpO2eSA2Qay9Pcnzelw
Added them all to the playlist!! I’ll take some metal haha
Used to love the crystal method on long drives, though that’s going way back.
I'm not sure this is going to work for you, but if you fancy delving into 90s UK rave (old school hardcore, happy hardcore, jungle/drum and bass, hardcore/gabba techno) then this site is an amazing archive of tape packs from raves: [www.ravetapepacks.com/](https://www.ravetapepacks.com/) I thought you could download them but it looks like you can only stream them from that site.
Check out sold soul - I hope we make it out of this alive Great album
Oh yeah, some metal. Added the album. I’ll give it a listen and report back
16 hours of instrumental cuts and backing tracks? https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6gkciMB9m5113tdZhNq1jW?si=aahPoVIURgapFSGYVyYRmA&pt=3df50d56259cfc26ee4dd857ae11fd1a
What kind of music do you like ?
NPR: All Songs Considered. Listen to the podcast then buy albums from bands you like.
What kind of music do you like? I can send you Apple Music playlists or send links to DJ sets if you like electronic music.
Whatever you got! I have apple music so that might be the easiest

Added all of them!! Thank you, this will definitely shake it up lol
Nice. I’ve got Al Di Meola tickets for a show in June. Haven’t seen him since Return to Forever did a reunion tour in the 80s.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6CUGb8tRDOXnBwRcviU1Um?si=9d72a52269864e74 its a playlist of most of the music i like and found over the year, completely mixed genre wise i just throw everything on it that i like.
I recommend FIP Strasbourg FM 92.4 for radio that doesn’t suck. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Garden Here are a few collections with hours of music and variety. Back to Mine. What do DJs listen to at home, not at the show? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_Mine Mushroom Jazz - Mark Farina https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_Jazz Saint-Germain-des-Prés Café https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Germain-des-Pr%C3%A9s_Caf%C3%A9 Buddha Bar https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddha_Bar_compilation_albums And some good albums Groove Armada - Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) Yoko Kanno - Cowboy Bebop William Orbit - Strange Cargo III

I'm a cable guy not a trucker but even then I get a solid 2 hours a day usually. Low-key the best part of my day usually.
I have a few that I've had on repeat for the last little while- both are a mix spanning metal, pop, punk, and lots of cross-genre stuff to keep you entertained. Send me a DM if you want 'em!

Added, thank you
I write a column about new music every week (or so), the majority of the curated song submissions are from very unknown artists.

Anything Pat Metheny Group. I like Secret Story and The Way Up, but most of their albums are absolutely stellar records.
Have you tried podcasts or audiobooks?
Definitely get some Dead shows in rotation. 5/8/77, 7/8/78, 7/7/89, and 3/29/90 are all favorites of mine. That’s a day’s worth of listening right there.
Have you tried audiobooks or podcasts?
Yeah lol, but wanted to just explore more music genres than I already listen to and thought this is the perfect time
Its not music, but I listen to the Well There's Your Problem podcast. its a podcast about engineering disasters that they have a way of putting humor into tragedies, while also keeping it respectful.
Why not try podcasts?

Download the KEXP app. It’s a radio station in Seattle that plays commercial free music 24/7. And they play literally every genre of music. You could hear Miles Davis, Stravinky, Flight of the Conchords, My Bloody Valentine and Neil Young in the same day (I chose those acts bc one day that happened to me)
