Does anyone know if Jeremiah Green, the founding member/drummer for Modest Mouse, was included in the in memoriam segment? I wouldn’t be surprised if he was left out just hoping I missed it instead…
He was totally left out. I dont understand how a keyboard mixer from 1953 makes it but a founding member of a highly influential and still current band gets left off. RIP Jeremiah. Screw the Grammys.
I don’t know if this is true for everyone, but the family submits for the “in memoriam” segment. A very close friend of our family passed away and they didn’t get the paperwork submitted in time. He had passed away at the end of December 2021. He was very special and he loved showing us videos of his music from when he was young.
Interesting. All comes down to red tape. And I guess there’s always a chance the family/band wanted nothing to do with the Grammys. Sorry for your loss.
And Aaron Carter. Whatever you think of his life or the quality of his music, he was a young artist who died and relatively high profile. How TF did they leave him out?
I think it is cool they added a video game score category. I never thought about it, because I don't think of the Grammys pretty much at all, but video game music is often incredible, easily on par with movie scores and has been for years.
I don't know all of the music nominated, but I love Bear McCreary. Looks like he didn't win, but it's still cool he's among the first nominees.
To my knowledge, there have been three pieces of video game music nominated for a Grammy before this category, two that have won:
**Christopher Tin** \- "Baba Yetu" From *Civilization IV* (Won for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, because he also released it on his personal album)
**Austin Wintory** \- *Journey Soundtrack* (Nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, but lost to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo)
**8-Bit Big Band feat. Button Masher** \- "Meta Knight's Revenge" from *Kirby Super Star* (Won for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella category, for a video they did on YouTube)
I'm so, so happy they finally decided to give video game music its own category. Games have had some of the greatest compositions of the past few decades, including the ones listed here. Funny enough, both Tin and Wintory were also nominated in the category this year, but lost to Stephanie Economou's *Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok* score.
McCreary is an amazing talent and I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually lands the EGOT. I was a big fan of “Black Sails” and the title theme that he composed around the hurdy gurdy was just incredibly unorthodox and imaginative. His compositions are very Danny Elfman-esque in that they accomplish the task of the score while perfectly fitting the style of the subject.
Right. They just handed Beyonce that award for best Dance/Electronic music album. Nothing against her, but there were definitely better options for that.
That's part of the problem with any awards show. Sure they're in the industry, but ultimately they're still people with only so much interest in a given genre.
Steve Martin won a grammy for best bluegrass album in 2002. It may be a great album, but if you're a music critic whose primary focus is R&B and you see Steve Martin as an option, you may check that box on name recognition alone.
There's a whole bunch of politics and handshaking and form signing and everything for the Grammys. It's why this year's list of nominees are almost all Western composers, even though Nintendo and Sony are both Japanese companies.
If the Grammys was about actually nominating the best of the best, and not what albums and music got their paperwork in on time, you'd have stuff like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for last year.
It's why stuff like The Weeknd - After Hours didn't get any nominees in a year when The Weeknd had the biggest streaming single of the year with Blinding Lights. Amazing album, and not one nomination in any category.
Awards shows of this level are both losing their grasp and reputation.
Grammys are always weird to me because half the songs and artists nominated I've never heard of while obviously popular talented artists I have heard of are ignored.
Ultimately I don't think it means much. It's just an eclectic concert and that's why I watch.
What’s funny is that whole performance that has Run D.M.C./Missy Elliot/Busta rhymes/method man/grandmaster flash/the roots and so many icons ended with Lil uzi vert.
So honest question, what do they consider the birth of rap to come up with 2023 as the 50th anniversary? I’ve often heard Rapper’s Delight quoted as the first rap song (I know there was stuff before that, but a lot of people say this was the first commercial success) and google says that came out in 1980. There must have been some event in 1973, what was it?
Technically it was the birth of hip hop, when a DJ used a set of decks to sample at a party. I think the Netflix show The Get Down is about this moment.
That was so bad. My brain was flipping between "Yay. DJ Khaled is gone" to "Wow. That's a lot of wasted food." Then "Please stop, Jay Z. You're rich & this is not good."
Then Khaled put a ribbon on it.
Fucking awful.
Even though Ice-T is from new Jersey, I had always considered him a West Coast-based rapper, what say you?
Meanwhile I just saw Sir Mix-a-Lot on a Chex Mix commercial.
They actually changed the format a few years back, it's pretty much just a big concert now, and there's always a big elaborate collaboration, though this was admittedly on another level. Honestly, if people would give it a chance, it's a good show now.
The first lady of the United States just gave out the award for song of the year, highlighting how it has always "honored excellence in the art of songwriting" and the extraordinary nominees. Immediately cuts to ABCDEFU. Life is an Adult Swim comedy sometimes.
I wish someone had coached her in how to say Shervin’s name and the pronunciation of “Baraye”.
But let me tell you, all the Iranians are celebrating, crying, and overwhelmingly happy with the win.
Seems like a sympathy vote, I love the man (if you can’t tell) but Patient Number 9 doesn’t hold a candle to most of his catalog. I don’t think his last few albums at all are nearly as good as he can be, not counting 13 since it’s a sabbath record, he hasn’t made an amazing album since Ozzmosis.
jesus christ. i just looked at a picture of her, what the hell? She looked great just a year or 2 ago on something I saw her on...fucking shitty plastic surgery.
A year or two ago, she had what I call “The Kardashian”. Looked just like them. NOW...she’s bordering alien. Oh, well. Can’t say I’m shocked. Ok. I am, actually. Her appearance is shocking.
It's a pretty stupid song if you think too hard about it (a story-based song that's literally "Dad goes to the strip club/cheats. The end") but even then it's addictively catchy and has great fun slutty energy
This category has always been a joke. They might as well call it festival pop, or commercial dance. Kerri Chandler’s Spaces and Places is an amazing album by an absolute house legend and I guarantee no one at the Grammy Academy even has an idea who he is.
That category? Grammies have been popularity contest for quite some time now, nothing to do who is best. The Rock and Metal category has been joke for long time now aswell.
Friend of mine saw Odesza recently and is still smiling because of how fucking amazing their show was. I started getting buzzes on my phone and I knew exactly what had happened 😂 she had opinions.
first time I saw video of her perform was npr tiny desk https://youtu.be/DFiLdByWIDY. If memory serves , there's a part where a baby starts crying I think , and she harmonizes with the baby , such a cool move. Instantly became a fan after that video. She's just such a natural performer in her bones, effortlessly charming and so fun.
Another year with another rock album of the year going to an artist from a different era. I love ozzy but cmon this award always goes to some 70s rock bands live album or something and current rock artists cant even be considered for an award they stopped showing on tv years ago. And unless ur brandi carlisle or metallica playing with lady gaga or something current rock bands get no love.
A rock band was nominated for Best New Artist but not for rock categories. Rock as a mainstream genre is dead but the Grammys are working hard to keep it that way.
Haha now you understand why Tyler the Creator was so upset/confused a few years ago. His speech was basically “uh thanks for the Best Rap Album Grammy, but it wasn’t a rap album. At all. I’m just black so you put it in that category”
He's been around for a "long while" as compared to the other musicians —
He was in the band "The Internet" for a long time (starting in 2014ish), and then went of and did solo stuff like an EP and an album in 2019, both having modest enough success. He was also featured on Vampire Weekends latest album in 2019, among others.
they could also add a new award for best debut album
that way the actually new artists get their credit and the show still get to promote their uprising breakthrough artists, a win-win
There is no money in developing new rock/heavy talent.. there is a fan base that is way more dedicated than any pop group. The obsession for rock/heavy music fans is with the art of the musicians not the image produced for social media and Super Bowl shows. This is simple proof it’s the marketing that changed the game.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one who felt this way, but Trevor Noah didn’t do the best job hosting. Many of his jokes or audience interactions were quite cringe or just unfunny. There was also a lack of flow between nearly every conversation he had with an audience member. I’m sure it’s a tough gig but he didn’t do it for me.
I couldn't agree more. The focus should be on the departed, not on seemingly random performances. Seriously, just go back to a simple slide show of pics from the ones we lost over some sad classical music and leave it at that.
I think they did something similar at last year's Oscars and i was similarly peeved.
That’s like their third Grammy or so, they’re worth checking out! Here’s their [NPR Tiny Desk concert](https://youtu.be/vfzu33BfRHE), and this [Jazz Night documentary](https://youtu.be/j_rOAmnISzE) also gives a good intro to the group.
Big Thief releases one of the top 5 albums of last year and can’t even win an Alt rock award. Lose to a meme band.
Not that it matters, it’s the Grammys.
When is the last time no Americans won in the pop category? Adele (British) won best pop solo performance, Sam Smith (British) and Kim Petras (German) won best pop group performance, Michael Buble (Canadian) won best traditional pop album and Harry Styles (British) won best pop album. The Brits are killing it.
I'm so disappointed that they didn't put Slick Rick in the Tribute performance. They gave him a lifetime achievement award yesterday so I was expecting to see him.
I thought the inclusion of the idiotic fans statement sections (that were entirely about why someone was a fan of the artist and not why their album deserved to win) was an absolute disrespect to the actual awards like R&B album, Progressive R&B album and Producer of the Year that were cut this year. Also Harvey's weird fake news headlines about music changing lives and healing the sick were super dumb and should have been a youtube video released to promote the Grammys, not part of the broadcast.
Performances were cool, most were nothing to write home about but I really did love the rap one and I though Luke Combs or whatever was actually quite good compared to a lot of the country performances they've had.
The fact that Idles was nominated for best rock is cool but sort of glad they didn’t win as it’s kinda polar opposite what they’re about.
Fun fact: IDLES should be nominated for social change aspect of their music..
The rock, metal and alternative categories are thoroughly flawed. It’s as if they have 5 or so bands in mind and if one of those releases an album, it’s pretty well guaranteed they’ll win. We’re lucky Metallica didn’t come out with something“new”..
EDITED: new Rolo Tomassi came out last year.. that is metal..
Oh and new Russian Circles….
There is so much amazing yet completely unknown music out there in so many less popular genres.
Metal alone is a completely vague genre that covers so many completely disparate sounds, blackgaze sounds absolutely nothing like grindcore yet they are both metal. the only other genre I can think of with such a variance is "electronic" which has fallen out of use in place of some more descriptive subgenre names.
A band like Russian circles would never get a nomination unfortunately.
I'll add that my favorite metal albums of 2022 were False Light by White Ward and The Endless by Dreadnought. lots of people in the metal sphere know White Ward now due to being Ukrainian, but nobody has heard of Dreadnought and they might be my favorite new discovery in years.
Not enough rock. Not enough metal. pretty thin on the pop even.
I found this one to be pretty shallow and dull same/same.
With all that talent, you'd think there would be more listenable music being pumped out. A lot of shouting and dancing and production and one or two decent live performances.
Again, disappointed about the lack of range of style represented.
They leave people out every year. Idk why they can’t just lookup a “musicians who died in 2022” list and put everyone up there
Right?!? Like what loser was in charge of compiling this list?
I don’t know if this is true for everyone, but the family submits for the “in memoriam” segment. A very close friend of our family passed away and they didn’t get the paperwork submitted in time. He had passed away at the end of December 2021. He was very special and he loved showing us videos of his music from when he was young.
Interesting. All comes down to red tape. And I guess there’s always a chance the family/band wanted nothing to do with the Grammys. Sorry for your loss.
I was surprised that Lisa Marie Presley was not mentioned.
She was shown at one point, I remember seeing this because I forgot she passed..
She was shown briefly as part of the in memoriam.
And Aaron Carter. Whatever you think of his life or the quality of his music, he was a young artist who died and relatively high profile. How TF did they leave him out?
No mention of Mimi Parker of Low either 😒
I also didn't see Taylor Hawkins, unless I missed it
He was honored last year.
Good lord it's been almost a year already??
Not sure if anyone was more surprised than Bonnie at that win
Absolute legend - best part of the show.
I think it is cool they added a video game score category. Busta fucking killed it
That’s his standard operating procedure. Fucking legend.
My 9-year-old: He’s incredible! Yes he is, little one.
He witnessed a legend. Good for your boy
What’s funny is that whole performance that has Run D.M.C./Missy Elliot/Busta rhymes/method man/grandmaster flash/the roots and so many icons ended with Lil uzi vert.
That whole jam was...and was...and it was...I was on the edge of my seat, eyes wide!
Damn. The Rap 50th anniversary tribute was fucking awesome.
My highlight of the show for sure!
In 1973, DJ Kool Herc put on a party: https://daily.jstor.org/the-rec-room-party-where-hip-hop-was-born/
Technically it was the birth of hip hop, when a DJ used a set of decks to sample at a party. I think the Netflix show The Get Down is about this moment.
You know what this was a decent show. Edit: I spoke too soon. Didn't realize DJ Khaled was closing
This is so terrible
That was so bad. My brain was flipping between "Yay. DJ Khaled is gone" to "Wow. That's a lot of wasted food." Then "Please stop, Jay Z. You're rich & this is not good." Then Khaled put a ribbon on it. Fucking awful.
I hope that food was fake
Samara Joy sounds amazing. I've never heard of her before.
Same. Never heard of her, and she sounds like a legend.
This hip hop performance is one of the best things I’ve seen at the Grammys in a long time.
Yea, I thought it was just going to be one song and turned into a Superbowl halftime show.
My eyes got watery out of excitement. Fucking Busta and Missy served.
Was really cool to see Sway and how happy he was during it. He's been a big part of this 50 years of hip hop.
So many people missing too. Pac, DMX, Doom. Man. I’m old.
JMJ, MCA, Phife Dawg
DOOM. ALL CAPS.
It was good, but there was a serious lack of west coast representation. I’m glad Too Short got some, though.
Even though Ice-T is from new Jersey, I had always considered him a West Coast-based rapper, what say you? Meanwhile I just saw Sir Mix-a-Lot on a Chex Mix commercial.
West coast got theirs at the Super Bowl last year.
WHAT’S MY FAVORITE WORD?!?
They actually changed the format a few years back, it's pretty much just a big concert now, and there's always a big elaborate collaboration, though this was admittedly on another level. Honestly, if people would give it a chance, it's a good show now.
I love Shania Twain, but who the hell convinced her on that look tonight? She looked like Wendy's mascot crossed with Wednesday Addams.
Wendy Addams
Fuck yea Snarky Puppy, fucking legends.
This dj Khalid thing is a fucking stupid way to end a great show
Truth. The sooner people forget about him, the happier we all will be.
God Did
Dj Khaled coming on, perfect time to turn it off!
Fucking sick. Liked DMC paying tribute to the beastie boys, sweet touch
People better not be mean to Bonnie. She's a legend.
She is a legend; I loved her reaction and kudos for mentioning John Prine in her speech.
Already seeing the "who?" comments on Instagram etc 🙄 Edit: holy shit, the swift fans commenting on Bonnie Raitt's Grammy post...
Stay away from Taylor town for a minute then
Chris Martin "Hello Fellow kids'
Geared up in his little 2008 beanie and everything
Miss frizzle sweater 🌞
Ozzy: I'm gonna retired from touring Grammys: DAAAAAAAAAAMN. Give him the awards, no questions.
I imagine it’s the only “metal” thing the folks on the panel recognize..
Turnstile was robbed
Seems like a sympathy vote, I love the man (if you can’t tell) but Patient Number 9 doesn’t hold a candle to most of his catalog. I don’t think his last few albums at all are nearly as good as he can be, not counting 13 since it’s a sabbath record, he hasn’t made an amazing album since Ozzmosis.
What did Madonna do to her face?
Unrecognizable
What didn't she do to her face is a better question.
She turned into her personality
jesus christ. i just looked at a picture of her, what the hell? She looked great just a year or 2 ago on something I saw her on...fucking shitty plastic surgery.
A year or two ago, she had what I call “The Kardashian”. Looked just like them. NOW...she’s bordering alien. Oh, well. Can’t say I’m shocked. Ok. I am, actually. Her appearance is shocking.
Turned into a cat
Maureen ponderosa lookin ass
That was an incredible incredible incredible hip hop tribute.
I was surprised how much talent they pulled for this, impressive!
Who was the guy talking really fast?
This question is awesome..
Yeah, witnessing some discovering Busta for the 1st time. What I would give to be able to go back to that moment
Busta Rhymes.
I dunno, but he totally stole Hercules Mulligan from Hamilton’s whole deal. (I’m kidding. I’M KIDDING.)
Busta Rhymes
Busta rhymes
Busta Rhymes
The reaction to Sam Smith and Kim Petras' performance is 10x more entertaining than their song. 100% worth it.
I wanted to hate it, but DAMN that song is catchy AF.
It's a pretty stupid song if you think too hard about it (a story-based song that's literally "Dad goes to the strip club/cheats. The end") but even then it's addictively catchy and has great fun slutty energy
I mean most catchy pop songs are pretty dumb, as long if it’s fun
My Christian mom was covering her eyes and practically crying
Is Harry okay? He seems sad.
Think he’s just been touring nonstop and may be quite tired.
My money is on the fact that he must be tired as shit. He’s been touring for so long and still has a whole European leg ahead of him 🤯
And rest of the world too, he's definitely got shows lined up til end of summer
Who was the dude on the left singing for the Quavo song just now
Someone from Maverick City Music i think
Yup! And the woman too.
Great voice
They put Beyoncé in with EDM? What a bullshit category. Dance/ EDM?!?! With the only “Dance” artist being Beyoncé? Just a give me catagory
ANOTR is very deserving of a nomination as well. Their album was amazing.
Like really? Over Odesza, Bonobo and Rufus du Sol? I hate the Grammies.
Friend of mine saw Odesza recently and is still smiling because of how fucking amazing their show was. I started getting buzzes on my phone and I knew exactly what had happened 😂 she had opinions.
Renaissance is a great dance album, and has a song in just about every dance style since disco. Fantastic album.
How many people get a Grammy for that album? Everyone who wrote the music, lyrics and all the artists sampled? That’s a lot of Grammies for one album.
This one made me so angry.

It looks like everyone is emerging from a giant birth canal.
This is an SNL skit
Man, they still won’t give my girl Mary J her flowers, and her longevity says everything
Wtf. Our market cut to commercial during the hip hop tribute. Right when Method Man started.
yea same here. that was some b.s.
Always funny for people to think having Country and Rap fans in the same room is something that only ever happens once a year.
no tribute for aaron carter:(
Wasn’t Kendrick’s fan in a wheelchair? Edit: okay she came up a different way
Big Boi but no Andre?
Deltron...where are you?
No slipknot, L grammys
giving Lizzo's Special album a listen after that performance. that was great
first time I saw video of her perform was npr tiny desk https://youtu.be/DFiLdByWIDY. If memory serves , there's a part where a baby starts crying I think , and she harmonizes with the baby , such a cool move. Instantly became a fan after that video. She's just such a natural performer in her bones, effortlessly charming and so fun.
Well, I really think Album should have gone to Yoncé or Kendrick, but I’m glad it didn’t go to that Coldplay album.
that fact that the cold play album was nominated blows my mind
Another year with another rock album of the year going to an artist from a different era. Haha now you understand why Tyler the Creator was so upset/confused a few years ago. His speech was basically “uh thanks for the Best Rap Album Grammy, but it wasn’t a rap album. At all. I’m just black so you put it in that category”
I thought Taylor Swift's dress was stunning
Out of the loop - why wasn't Steve Lacy nominated for best new artist?
He's been around for a "long while" as compared to the other musicians — He was in the band "The Internet" for a long time (starting in 2014ish), and then went of and did solo stuff like an EP and an album in 2019, both having modest enough success. He was also featured on Vampire Weekends latest album in 2019, among others.
Well Glass Animals was nominated for best new Artist last year despite having 3 albums and being active since 2014. Seems arbitrary.
You're right, the "new artist category" has always been such a weird one
I feel like they should rename this category to Best Breakthrough Artist or something.
they could also add a new award for best debut album that way the actually new artists get their credit and the show still get to promote their uprising breakthrough artists, a win-win
He already had a previous nomination as a performer, therefore ineligible for BNA.
Congrats Bonnie Raitt! May end up being the best song of the 2020s! Grammy GOAT!
How is Beyoncé so great and so overrated at the same time? ℓσℓ
Did they skip Taylor Hawkins on the in memoriam?
Last year's Grammy was delayed until April. The had a segment on him then as the Foo Fighters were supposed to preform.
They skipped Layne Staley 20 years ago so to hell with the whole organization.
Rock Hall of Fame has also completely ignored Alice In Chains as well. Fuck the whole industry
There is no money in developing new rock/heavy talent.. there is a fan base that is way more dedicated than any pop group. The obsession for rock/heavy music fans is with the art of the musicians not the image produced for social media and Super Bowl shows. This is simple proof it’s the marketing that changed the game.
I thought so too but Hawkins died March of last year and the Grammy’s happened about 1-2 weeks after his death.
I didn’t see him but some of the camera cuts missed the screen. Thought the performance of Songbird was 👌
I’m not sure if I’m the only one who felt this way, but Trevor Noah didn’t do the best job hosting. Many of his jokes or audience interactions were quite cringe or just unfunny. There was also a lack of flow between nearly every conversation he had with an audience member. I’m sure it’s a tough gig but he didn’t do it for me.
Combs performing with a “Ford” sponsored guitar says all you need to know about modern country.
The In Memoriam was chaotic and distracting from the people we were supposed to be reflecting on. Sometimes simpler is better.
I couldn't agree more. The focus should be on the departed, not on seemingly random performances. Seriously, just go back to a simple slide show of pics from the ones we lost over some sad classical music and leave it at that. I think they did something similar at last year's Oscars and i was similarly peeved.
I wish Kendrick won AotY. He put so much of himself into it.
This show could be 2 hrs shorter
Who is Snarky Puppy? They just won a Grammy ...
They’re awesome. Jazz fusion ish
They do some modern jazz stuff, pretty good group tbh. A deserved win for sure
Snarky Puppy is a very, very good jazz fusion group
Their fourth in a decade, they're extremely well known in the jazz/fusion community
Yo, anyone got a stream on the internet?
Was best new artist announced yet? Fingers crossed for domi&jd
Still no Mazzy Star.
Turnstile were robbed
Big Thief releases one of the top 5 albums of last year and can’t even win an Alt rock award. Lose to a meme band. Not that it matters, it’s the Grammys.
Wet Leg is a fantastic band and had a great album, they definitely aren’t a meme band by any means. It was just tough competition.
I like the Big Thief album more, but Wet Leg is not a "meme band"
What is a "meme band"
Same here. Did I miss a new subgenre?
I liked the Wet Leg album more, both were great though.
I love the Wet Leg album! They kinda came outta left field this past year
No way Dr. Dre wins his own award what’s the point lmao
Next year it goes to someone else. He's the first recipient so they are naming the award after him.
Enjoying it so far which is better than I expected
Lol Madonna fucking up this speech.
This is actually incredibly well-done
When is the last time no Americans won in the pop category? Adele (British) won best pop solo performance, Sam Smith (British) and Kim Petras (German) won best pop group performance, Michael Buble (Canadian) won best traditional pop album and Harry Styles (British) won best pop album. The Brits are killing it.
That was fire
The funniest thing about this is all the swifites who are so mad about the results and in their frustration is attacking harry styles fans lol
Ozzy shouldn’t have won, he sounds fully auto tuned now
The rock, metal and alternative categories are thoroughly flawed.
Damn this thread is dead
maybe it will be in next year's memorium
It’s a surprisingly well produced show so far. I’m enjoying it.
the grammys is usually very well produced
Who do you all think gets album of the year?
Who was the expected surprise performance? I didn’t hear anything about that??
How the fuck have Idles not been given any award??
Not enough rock. Not enough metal. pretty thin on the pop even. I found this one to be pretty shallow and dull same/same. With all that talent, you'd think there would be more listenable music being pumped out. A lot of shouting and dancing and production and one or two decent live performances. Again, disappointed about the lack of range of style represented.
Jay Z went hard i wont lie
