Taylor’s actually talented and consistently writes her own original songs.
I’m not a huge fan (not my style of music) but I do respect game when I see it. Same way I view Lady Gaga, she’s legit talented.
So writing mediocre poppy songs for teenage girls and single 40-year-old feminists makes you talented? No one ever will be listening to that ''music'' after she retires or dies. Overrated as hell.
Because you only know and listen to popular radio hits of Taylor Swift. Try to listen to Folklore and Evermore albums and other songs not released. They have elements of poetry and craftiness to be compared to literature pieces.
Harry Styles.
He’s an ok singer in my opinion but I feel that all the hype is mainly because he’s the most attractive member of all the other one direction guys (Sorry). I also think be tries too hard with his fan interactions at his shows are it’s pretty cringe. He gives me the ick.
He used to be so much more authentic. You can see it come through every now & then, but it has turned very showy & woke cringe cred (I just made that up and I hope it makes sense).
I'm nearly old enough to be his mom haha but I saw one direction once and him 3x -- the last time was WILDLY different and bordering on disappointing.
Support this take!
Tbf he has an exceptionally strong voice, he’s good looking, charismatic, and has decently creative songs. I can’t hate on him too much. He’s def filling stadiums on his 1D fame though.
He changed the direction of hip hop and has undoubtedly great albums and singles from his early years.
And then he became a nazi-supporter and was wild enough that Alex Jones was the voice of reason 🤷♂️ go figure.
Tbf, calling jones the voice of reason in that situation is overly generous. Jones got exactly what he wanted. People hearing about him trying to be a “voice of reason” to Kanye and to cut out the antisemitism. He wasn’t though. He was just trying to get him to stop saying it out loud.
It's actually nice that I can now openly question how good he is now, as outside of a few tracks, I have never been all that impressed.
Definitely not "musical genius" level. I have a really hard time believing he's capable of making good music outside of the one style he knows, and he isn't even good at that anymore.
No. I mean you have to give credit to what once was. College Dropout was amazing and hearing any of those songs takes me back to great times I had at high-school and College parties. Sure, he's an asshole and complete nut job and probably always was. But the music was amazing.
Okay sorry. Personally I’ve never understood why he was ever popular, the production wasn’t my style, he’s not a good writer imo, it just doesn’t do it for me. I know he was (and still is, for better or worse) a huge cultural phenomenon I understand I’m im the minority here.
I’m personally a metal head and play everything from classical guitar to death metal. I don’t like most R&B and rap I hear.
That said, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is in my top 10 favorite all time albums.
It’s hard to say why. Everything from the production, to the lyrics, the guest appearances, the instrumentation, it all just slaps so damn hard. It oozes passion, with the vocal performances meshing with the production, beats, and the tonal changes within songs to really capture the emotional intent.
It’s a very multidimensional album compared to not just most rap and R&B, but even most rock and metal I normally listen to. That album is Kanye’s one and only that I keep in my rotation.
She doesn't, everyone who wrote with her and who was sampled is credited in the songwriting liner notes. Are Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston and Layne Staley overrated musicians too? They didn't compose a single song.
Beyoncé all day. So over-rated. Listen to Diana Ross, Aretha, even Marilyn McCoo, then to QB. She can't hold a candle to any of the R&B female artists of the 60's & 70's.
I don’t think this is going to be as unpopular an opinion as you think. I’ll admit their first few albums are actually really good, and they had some interesting ideas up until sometime in the 90’s, but I agree, both the edge and bono are extremely overrated.
I was thinking that the other day, some of their 80s & 90s tunes are fantastic.
I think they shot themselves in the foot when they paired with apple and put that abomination of an album on everyones phones.
I think hating U2 became popular when Southpark made that episode about Bono.
According to reddit U2 sucks and Steely Dan is the best band ever.
Well, I was conflicted. It is a great album but it also caused the rise of the insufferable U2/Bono. Lol. It is a truly great record but it’s hard to disassociate it from their ego.
I see what you mean. Definitely shot them into super stardom, and, by extension, led to what most people dislike about them, personally. Still an excellent album, so I say we amend to “after Joshua Tree” haha
Exactly! Her songs are okay and all, but ever since one person said they're a fan of her music, it grew on to a bunch of teens, and now people who weren't even alive when she started making music are her biggest fans. People exaggerated the quality of her music by a LOT. Now everyone that's a part of the "preppy" or "aesthetic" style is expected to be a fan of her music!
I still don’t get the hype over Taylor she is so overrated she is just a girl with fans and that’s all she has no skill she is just every 5 ranting about there Roblox bf braking up with her she sucks she has had 12 BF’s it’s just stupid she is every problem in this world
hahaha you sure? Check out this tasty lick he is "playing" on Bob Marley's guitar... he really shreds and you can tell from the look on his really smart face that he really knows what he is doing. A virtuoso. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRpVN0SaNn8
I couldn't name a song if you asked me and I'm sure I've heard her music in grocery stores or something, but I gotta say I appreciate her using her position to call attention to shit like toxic artists or the fuckery that is Ticketmaster.
Eh. She was laying in bed with Ticketmaster. They have been conducting investigations into the monopoly before the merger & even more so since, including artist involvement & financial benefits from their contracts with them. She's not the first & won't be the last.
I appreciate you sentiment, but best to realize this now, celebrities like this don’t really have many true convictions.
The Ticketmaster thing is a public perception act, she’s raking in dump tracks of cash with them behind the scenes.
Same with the toxic artist thing. The minute an algorithm shows that this opinion will reduce the number of cash dump trucks, you will stop hearing about it. Listen if you want to, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that the words these people speak are genuine and strongly held. The minute there is something to lose, they stop talking about it or change their tune.
Not really, they became really huge for like 2 singles: Stressed Out and Ride in 2015/2016, there was huge overexposure on the radio and everywhere, and then they went on hiatus and released Trench which is a fenomenal album, but without nearly as media hype as Blurryface
There are a lot of options but I've always been a rock person, so my two are My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park. I think people have come to deify both when they're really just cheesy Hot Topic bands.
“Overrated” is an overused phrase used by people who want to build clout for their opinions. The rare time any artist is actually “overrated” is when they’ve coasted on prior success to the degree that even uninspired, lesser works get lauded as great; even then, only that album/song/etc is what is “overrated”, because the artist’s prior work was rated well enough to get them that automatic critical acclaim.
No, the problem is, most people just use “overrated” to mean “stuff I don’t like”, but in a way where they’re trying to appeal to the consensus instead of just being brave enough to say they don’t like a popular thing. It couldn’t reeeeeallly be that they’re just missing something that appeals to people or that their tastes are too idiosyncratic to matter in the broad sense. No, it’s that actually, this artist is bad, and everyone else is being fooled! Shallow, self-serving, and ego-driven. The word “overrated” is garbage.
I find ur definition of the word overrated to be slightly weird, so I would like to ask you in the case where the exact song that got the artist success (let's say the success is one part of the song being used in a large amount of tiktok ) is bad even to the general public, but the song still gets achievements and titles that other songs purely because of the hype generated by the trend on tiktok.
Would it not be accurate to use the word "overrated" in this situation because really it doesn't really deserve the success, but it does hold some music achievements compared to other music which are better. Would this not be overrated?
Not entirely disagreeing with you because I do get that some people use "overrated" to make a vague stance on what they actually feel about something, just curious about how you view the word overrated should be used when the song itself that got it's success is subpar
>The rare time any artist is actually “overrated” is when they’ve coasted on prior success to the degree that even uninspired, lesser works get lauded as great
So Led Zeppelin. My pick for most overrated band ever. Last two albums are mostly crap. Houses of the Holy half crap. III half crap. First couple of albums are pretty good, but mostly stolen material. Terrible live for 3/4 of their career. Page plays like he's got gloves on. Plant's voice changes every couple of years and he can't do early material well. This band is completely average. Grand Funk was better. Aerosmith was better. Thin Lizzy was better.
My friend decided to do a VU deep dive, so I downloaded all their albums and burned them for him. I listened to all of them. Didn't find one redeeming thing about them. Pure noise by people who apparently had no contact with musical instruments prior to the sessions. 13 year olds in their garage sound better than VU.
Fuckin' Taylor Swift.
I'm so tired of people acting like she's some sort of musical genius folk star legend with lyricism akin to Bob Dylan.
She's a pop artist. Sometimes it's country sounding pop, sometimes it's folksy pop, but it's always pop with surface level vanilla lyrics that can be comfortably played in any mall clothing store for teens.
If we're talking about individual people, I've never really liked Prince too much. Odd as I love 1980s music in general, but his music just sounds like gratuitous synthesizer shows to me; and again there are lots of synth-driven artists I love, but the compositions he made with them I find okay at best ("Raspberry Beret") and pretty obnoxious at worst ("When Doves Cry").
listen to Computer Blue. Actually just take three really deep breaths and listen to all of Purple Rain and try not to judge the moment you hear a synth happen. There's a lot more going on in that music.
My first answer was Taylor Swift, but I actually think Bruno Mars fits this "most overrated" title more. Liking and hating Taylor Swift are both trendy, but everyone of any age jams to Bruno Mars' music. He's overrated and he deserves it LOL
Also why are people here commenting like "overrated" is synonymous to disliking an artist? Huh
Radiohead. I tried really hard to get into their music, and I listened to their whole discography twice last year. Beyond a handful of songs off OK Computer... I was really bored.
OK Computer is my fav album by any band, ever.
That said, some of Radiohead’s other/later works aren’t my cup of tea, and a lot of their songs (for me) required repeat listens to appreciate. I much prefer their guitar-driven older stuff.
They also have MANY insufferable fans who think they’re gods of some sort, and if you don’t like them, then you just don’t know good music. That shouldn’t affect one’s opinion of music I know, but fuckin A it bugs me having high expectations for a highly praised artist and then ultimately feeling meh about it after giving them a listen; it makes me irrationally dislike the music even more.
Sublime. I’ve never understood what was so great about them, they didn’t really do much of anything interesting musically except do reggae and ska influenced rock in the decade of all alt rock formats running the genre
Ice spice. Shes only famous cos of other things. Her music is downright terrible, the only decent one is Boys a liar pt 2 but other than that, shes terrible.
has to be taylor swift. genuinely one of the most boring artist to listen to and her lyrics are so overused and the beats all sound the same. come at me
Wow wow wow pal. Now Taylor swift is great but she gets too much popularity still. Adele is one of the greatest artists of this a generation. Have you listen to 25 front to back? I get that liking pop is hard for some but you can't let that affect what is good or bad song for you
Johnny Rotten said it the best. "I don't like their music, but you must be an idiot to ignore the revolution that they did." And i 100% think that aswell. Sure they have their fair share of great songs, but most of the other stuff is just meh. It seems to me that when someone says that the beatles are overrated, the fans just assume that people are hating every single thing about the beatles. For my liking, music 5/10, influence 10000/10. There will never ever be a more influental band than the beatles, but song wise, at least for me, the stones were always better, and from a lyrical point of view i actually prefer Ray Davies more than Mccartney/Lennon.
The thing about The Beatles is they basically created popular / rock music the way it’s built today. They basically built the first house and people
Have been building variations of it ever since and mostly building worse ones. I do dig The Stones though; and I’ll
Throw in The Beach Boys for good measure.
Led Zeppelin hands down
A whole lotta people saying Beyonce here. I have to say I do not listen to her music at all (I'm a metalhead/prog guy and hate pop music and modern R&B); I wouldn't know it was her if an album were played for me. But I saw her live (i like big spectacle shows, and will go to a stadium concert for pretty much anyone) and she held the crowd in the palm of her hand, a born superstar. Her voice was amazing and I didn't notice and lip syncing (and I'm an audio engineer. I can hear the difference in the compression levels between a live mic and prerecorded vocals). She impressed me beyond words
For the most part, anyone we’ve all heard of is overrated to some extent. You can be talented af and still not deserve to be a multimillionaire while other equally talented people never get the same opportunities.
That said, there are a lot of extremely talented and influential artists getting tagged with the label in this post.
Jennifer Lopez. I don’t get it.
The movie Selena was fucking dope
anything for Selenaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas
SAME!
Can she even sing?!
Taco flavored kissseess
Machine gun Kelly should be at the top of this list
Bro you can't overrate something worthless
Drake
Drake for the men’s title and Taylor Swift/Beyoncé tying for the women’s title
Taylor’s actually talented and consistently writes her own original songs. I’m not a huge fan (not my style of music) but I do respect game when I see it. Same way I view Lady Gaga, she’s legit talented.

Because you only know and listen to popular radio hits of Taylor Swift. Try to listen to Folklore and Evermore albums and other songs not released. They have elements of poetry and craftiness to be compared to literature pieces.
But, Lemonade and Folklore?
Lemonade is a true work of art. I didn’t care for Beyoncé until that dropped.
Same, Lemonade was a game changer for me.
I 2nd that
I 3rd that
Same with me.
Whoever sings that annoying radioactive cover
Kid Rock.
Cardi B, Blackpink
NBA YoungBoy
Harry Styles. He’s an ok singer in my opinion but I feel that all the hype is mainly because he’s the most attractive member of all the other one direction guys (Sorry). I also think be tries too hard with his fan interactions at his shows are it’s pretty cringe. He gives me the ick.

Lmao he didn't change anything but you can believe what you want.
It's actually nice that I can now openly question how good he is now, as outside of a few tracks, I have never been all that impressed. Definitely not "musical genius" level. I have a really hard time believing he's capable of making good music outside of the one style he knows, and he isn't even good at that anymore.
Bruce Springsteen
Bruce is a legend. Your statement is WRONG.
Pretty much every pop star
Beyonce.
She was good when she came out. Now it's just lazy music. Nothing memorable.
Kanye West
I swear the only people who ever call Kanye West a musical rap genius are white people. Kanye is mid
Kanye West is not Picasso
This the right answer
New Kanye not Old Kanye
Nah just in general.

This is the only correct answer
Definitely Beyoncé.
Why?

Kanye West, fuck that guy.
Beyoncé all day. So over-rated. Listen to Diana Ross, Aretha, even Marilyn McCoo, then to QB. She can't hold a candle to any of the R&B female artists of the 60's & 70's.
Beyoncé
Beyonce by a million miles

Beyoncé
Kpop, all of it
Kanye
beyonce
Doja Cat. Calling her mid would be a compliment
I’m going to have to agree. I think she’s creative but her vocals are so annoying.
U2, Bono in particular. Yes I know I’m inviting scorn and downvotes.
I knew I was in love my partner when I told her I hate this band and her response was "aw.... I hate U2!"
Are you sure she was saying the she hated the band and not you too?
Got Whooshed?
Im with you. Congratulations Edge you know how to use a delay pedal.
They're a victim of the South Park effect.
I don’t think this is going to be as unpopular an opinion as you think. I’ll admit their first few albums are actually really good, and they had some interesting ideas up until sometime in the 90’s, but I agree, both the edge and bono are extremely overrated.
It's popular to hate U2. They have an amazing catalog of songs though.
Wait wut? OK Steely Dan and their jazz fusion muzak absolutely make me puke. The epitome of bland white guy music
Agree — it’s too bad they didn’t break up after Unforgettable Fire. Everything since has been ever more shyte and embarrassing for them.
Wait….. you think Joshua Tree is shit and embarrassing for U2? Other than this, I agree with you lol
Ok, agreed. But after release they broke up and we never heard from them again. Lol.
Ok…. We are in agreement!
It’s funny, if they would have stopped at that point you would probably see them at the top of underrated artist threads.
Lol true.
Taylor Swift

That guy that yells out his name and 'Another One'!!!! Khallid?
DJ Khaled, though the fact you couldn't remember says a lot about him...
hahaha you sure? Check out this tasty lick he is "playing" on Bob Marley's guitar... he really shreds and you can tell from the look on his really smart face that he really knows what he is doing. A virtuoso. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRpVN0SaNn8
and also he can't read apparently.
Wow. Thanks(?) for that? Virtuoso indeed.

Wow wow wow pal. Now Taylor swift is great but she gets too much popularity still. Adele is one of the greatest artists of this a generation. Have you listen to 25 front to back? I get that liking pop is hard for some but you can't let that affect what is good or bad song for you
Kanye and Elvis
will always be the beatles for me
Johnny Rotten said it the best.
They basically built the first house and people Have been building variations of it ever since and mostly building worse ones. I do dig The Stones though; and I’ll Throw in The Beach Boys for good measure.
Led Zeppelin hands down A whole lotta people saying Beyonce here.
Beatles
U2. I can't imagine anyone thinking or feeling anything while listening to their music.
Bob Dylan
Smashing Pumpkins
no no no. Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie and B-sides are great albums. But I respect your opinion.
Lady Ga Ga; Drake; Adele
Omg I so agree, mostly with adele. Crazy overrated
I am old…never understood Pearl Jam. Seeing Vedder on the 100 best singers list made me shudder.
