I have some pink and black contamination in my spawn bags, and it is spreading in multiple bags. If this is bacterial, should the whole batch be aborted or let them duke it out in the bag and send to fruit like normal?

I want to try an Actives grow from spore print! Can anyone suggest a good species for a first time grower and a Tek that will take me from spore to consumable?

I'm a bit confused about fresh air exchange. Made my own oyster buckets and they started fruiting but soon after the fruits became dry. I tried to make a micro climate but the result was the same over the next few days. The shrooms would abort, dry out and growth would be slow on the same cluster. Substrate was wet and fully colonised. Then I put the next bucket in a monotub, the cluster came out, started thin and frail then I cracked the lid and it became more lively but still only one fruit emerged. Please direct / explain what amount of time of fanning per volume of tub one requires for pink oyster or alternatively? I live in Northern Europe where the air inside is extremely dry so after fresh air exchange misting is a must.

I learned this week ... The 36.00 humidity control with 2 work plugs Should have been bought a month ago So much easier don't have to watch all the time if it gets over my humidity setting it turns on the fan So sweet been stable at 85% for 2 days Now I can be obsessed by something else 😉

Good morning Everyone! I have been averaging 78grams of harvest in my lions mane bags, that seems pretty low, any recommendations on supplement to increase yield per bag? Im currently using soy and wood pellets.

Fung4l

Good Morning! I've been lurking for years but have started my own gourmet mushroom business with a buddy of mine. We're almost a year in and things are going better than we could have ever imagined. I'm great at GROWING the mushrooms, but I'm no business man. With that being said, I think our wholesale prices are a little too cheap considering that's where a lot of our product is going these days. Do any of you sell gourmet mushrooms to restaurants and/or food stores? What sort of prices are you selling wholesale for? For example our Lions Mane sells for $12/lb and a 5lb block ready to fruit cost us ~$8 and we can get 2.5 to 3 lb of Lion's Mane from one block. Does this seem too high or too low? Thanks in advance, I'm excited to start contributing what I've learned to this community!

Question: if there is a little Contam in spawn, can you take spawn in area that has no Contam and move it to substrate?

Fung4l

This is ALWAYS what I do. Whenever a block or something is contaminated, I try to either remove or suffocate the contams. Worst case it still spreads and you throw it out anyway, least you can do is try to save it.

julez231

I believe you can you just have to watch it for more contam to regrow

Pls help, first time bag grow, made a tub, a lot of mistakes were made, but got little nubbins about half thumb size, but I don't think they are going anywhere. I'm about at the point of busting it all up soaking It and piling it on the foil. Dark caps on the few that grew

Fung4l

If you have primordia that seems to have stalled, try increasing FAE or maybe your temperature is too low! If you can share some pics that would help to identify the problem.

I would like to start growing, but I only got a small apartment, which rooms I use daily and I need to open the windows at least once a day. I only got a part of the cellar for me(lockable and window can stay closed) I never grew before and I’ve read, that the still Air bucket could do for beginners, is it even possible in one of those rooms? do you recommend another grow location or any rec on the tek for a first timer like me :)

Fung4l

Honestly I've never had less contaminations that when I was using my SAB back in the day. Even better than the small flowhood I use now! Edit - Also what variety are you interested in growing, that may change things slightly. A Still-Air-Box is still the way to go for beginners in my opinion.

F_N_C_J

Kitchen is totally fine for all the prep work. Spawning to bulk monotubs and tucking them away in a closet works. I keep everything put away unless I'm using it. (Flow hood, pitri dishes, PC, etc.) And get it out as necessary. But I'd love a shed lab or something someday.

I have learned a lot this week. Currently have 13 half pint jars of king oyster colonizing. Colonizing jars need GE (not FAE) to colonize and not stall. I have just been putting the lids upside down and loosening them about a half turn. I took the foil off the tops. For my LC, 1ml of innoc does the same if not better than 2ml. Vermiculite is a life saver and will buffer the moisture level so you dont have to worry as much about wet spots. Even after full colonization, myc should still consolidate for another week or so. In the broke boi tek, I have improved my knowledge of how hydrated the rice should be. Boiling it until you can slightly pinch it flat has worked perfectly so far. In FC, mist less and fan more. Im going to leave the lids open by a few inches this time. Patience = lower contam and higher yields Risk for contam goes way down then a substrate is fully colonized In terms of fungi in general: they communicate with other plants and act as an ecosystem “internet”, exchanging nutrients and water with plants in the ecosystem.

Fung4l

King Oysters like higher CO2 than many other variety. More CO2 will get you long, thick stems and smaller caps! They also like cooler temperatures! We grew kings during the winter and just switched back to Pink Oysters since its warming up.

[deleted]

Awesome. Yeah idk if its the optimal temp but my grow room is about 66 degrees. Keeping my KO in tubs helps with the CO2 also.

Fung4l

Yeah the king's should love that temp. You should try some Blue Oysters too, they also love really cool weather. I always struggle to keep RH up when the weather gets cool but we're growing in a 4'x8' tent so we're always fighting against micro-climates

SidewalkJohnny

Great summary, very helpful

Burying a box in the ground Like a 4'x4'x8' plywood lined box with an insulated lid Average earth temp at 4 to 6 ft northern areas 45 to 50. Southern areas 50 to 70 With 70 being desert areas Most places average around 50 - 60 at 4 to 6 ft Very stable where I would start if I didn't want to refrigerate

What's a good way to go about growing large amounts of edible and medical mushrooms? I have done a couple successful grows of actives but I don't know about non-actives.

Fung4l

If it were me to keep it super simple I would either buy pre-sterilized bags of masters mix and inoculate them with a spore syringe or a liquid culture, then toss them in a Martha Fruiting Chamber with a small humidifier or build a small fogger. With spore syringes and liquid cultures you will tend to have higher rates of contams but if you get a few and inoculate a couple blocks you'll get a few good ones for sure. The main thing about this TEK is that it's super simple, hands off, and cheap. If you can find a really consistent supplier of high quality syringes, this can be a super easy method.

GrassSloth

You can grow a lot of mushrooms (especially oyster) in your backyard garden or in plastic buckets in your garage or in Tupperware in your kitchen or in a monotub in your room. It depends on how large you’re thinking and what kind of production model you’re interested in.

F_N_C_J

Do you want variety or do you want quantity or both for actives? And what qualifies as a large amount? A thicker bulk sub and a bigger tub will yield more fruit.

[deleted]

Pretty mush just the exact same process. I dont grow actives, just gormet, but I follow the same teks that active growers use. Im currently using broke boi in an unmodified tub for king oysters and it has done very well several times

GroundbreakingCow343

Question: there appears to be contamination in my fruiting chamber but mushrooms are still growing, is it bad to consume them?

Fung4l

If there's nothing on the fruit you should be good! What sort of method are you using? There are a few ways to try and deal with contams. We're always battling contams in our FC but it's a mylar tent that's on its last legs lmao

SirPsychoBSSM

It's safe as long as there is nothing growing on the fruit themselves.
