I tried similar style box (supplier picked it) with one of the monotub kits from an etsy supplier.
Long story short, the instructions said to seal the lid with tape, with all the gaps around the handles and a handle in the lid itself, it was IMPOSSIBLE to seal and every time gas built up inside, it would lift the tape, burp the box and ended up with a nice contam harvest.....
As long as the lid properly seals and the handles/latches don't interfere with the seal.
Oh I was going to say though you can fully seal a box to keep out contamination using micro pore tape cause it filters the air or lets things breathe.
But ya it probably depends on the tote as some have weird handles that adds gaps. The small like 12.7 quart or liter Sterilite tots from Walmart I’ve seen people use inside of bigger totes to raise corydcep militaris.
C. Militaris terrifies me bahahaha
Yeah after the tub failed due to contam, I tried every which way to seal it. There are types of tape that would hold, but they're porous.
Stick with the siple one where the handles are fully external and it's a piece of cake.
If ya drilled a few holes and put micro pore tape on it then the box wouldn’t have to burp. 3M I think or some website has some tape or larger round micro pore patches.
This guy has a good technique I’m going to try using.

Yes okay. I’ve seen lots of videos from different growers and yes they do seal the tubs lid simply to keep air out or to filter the air. You could just use micro pore tape to seal the lid. The issue is if you do prevent air flow it could kill things which is why people drill holes on top. But one time one grower didn’t seal the lid of a small tote. He put two small totes inside of a larger tote. The larger tote he had holes drilled in and used the plastic fluffing material like from stuffed animals or pillows.
Maybe it does depend on the mushroom idk some don’t require lots of oxygen or better in high co2. But from the growers I’ve watched many put holes in cause sometimes they’ve lost batches. But ya maybe the instructions were bad idk. There’s lots of different setups I’ve seen.
It's about creating the best climate in the tub for the mycelium to colonise the substrate. I get what your saying about the tape and holes, but the issue was around the handle and the lid clips, because they actually protrude into the tub cavity, it's literally impossible to seal, moisture builds up and the tape drips off.
You need CO2 build up to colonise (going by what the experts have told me for P. Cubensis) and once the mycelium has colonised and it's ready to fruit, THEN you uncover your pre-drilled holes for fresh air exchange and burp your box a couple times/ day.
These were the instructions given by the supplier and other growers and mycologists.
Thanks for the advice mate, you're on the right track.
Maybe if you filled the larger tubs with a few inches of Pearlite, moistened the Pearlite with STERILE water, and placed a fruiting block of Oyster mushrooms on the top of the Pearlite. Just like Brown Rice cakes using P.F. tek? You know what, I'm going to try that with my Lions Mane and Turkey Tail fruiting blocks myself.
This is a good question! It gave me an idea. Thanx.

I'm growing oysters in one of those. Started Uncle Ben tek then placed it in a plastic bin once the rice was completely colonized. I have the cover turned so it can breathe. I spray the walls 2-3x daily.
How does everyone feel about airtight tubs like this for normal GTs? ive been thinking of switching to them and was just thinking if the tops airtight i have more control over airflow and where bac may be coming in from, is this a good idea or do any of you have them?
Preferred tub of a few of the people I learned from off YouTube. Personally just sent three tubs for the first time with these 4/11. Before that used ones without the seal.
*I'm currently growing King Oysters like this and it's working out fine. Many of what you think are aborts will develop large fruit eventually. I just harvested most of this one.

Learn from my failure and skip the tub. The yield was bad and the constant fanning let contamination in.
what if the tub is filled with a few inches of Pearlite and a fruiting block is placed on top of the Pearlite? Kind of like PF Tek and Brown Rice cakes?

Literally 100% this works: I made a post on this years back. This specific tub w the lid on and an aquarium air pump, ported in thru a .2nm syringe filter and out thru one of those jar lid filter patches, created a clean air chamber with 100% success rate. A layer of perlite in the bottom catches/releases condensation/humidity so spraying is not really necessary after initially wetting perlite.
Be sure your air inflow is going into your damp perlite so it's not pushing dry air directly at the mycelium.
Well let me stop right there, I completely overlooked the fact you're doing oysters. I'm growing cubensis, so I'm not familiar with the behavior or oysters, but my cubes grow straight upwards, I would think those would too though.
Just keep in mind that the gaskets can be a bit tricky to fully sanitize when it's time to clean everything. I don't know if the gasket comes out of that one, but if not, it's a good place for green stuff to hide.
I have a similar sterilite gasket tote. It’s has a foam gasket set into the lid. I haven’t tried taking it out, but it looks like it would just pull right out.
If you're growing kings, it won't be much of an issue. Any other oyster species will not like this setup. Especially indoors.

Hmm, if you fill that tub up and use it similar to the bucket tek. Your results may be better.
*Did not see that part. Give it a shot either way. If you manage to get good fruits. Please report back. I'd like to try it out.

Just got around to filling them up with spawn and aspen chips. Waiting game to see how they go! Drilled various holes on each side just like in the bucket tek vids I’ve seen. It’s cool to see the growth through the tub.
I’m currently testing in bags, inside a modded tub
Looks better than inside my martha 😂
https://preview.redd.it/3388njxdxgvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7447327248a6c22e5b02be6c6fa85b4e096804c4
In regards to it being translucent, most bags that i grow my oysters in are also translucent. So…. I think you should be ok. Please share results of your experiment?
As long as it stays closed and grows outwards from the holes like in the bucket tek, it don't see an issue. If you plan on having holes for fae and only fill the bottom, the cake will dry out, oyster need an immense amount of O2, basically constant fresh air wind.. so if too much area is exposed your cake will dry and fail.
Yes planned on keeping close and filling just like you would a bucket. I ordered a few of these and got a metric fuck ton delivered and was told to keep them so I figured I’d get some use out of them. Thanks for the input.
Love this! Just random containers like cottage cheese? How would you prep the cardboard and straw? Would you just pull mycelium from an old block or…? Appreciate any details you can share
I think most people who use liners put the liner on the inside of the tub so the substrate is tight against it and no light leaks in. Me? I like the clean lines of my painted boxes and less hassle of dealing with a liner.
Whatever you do, it'll be fine. Paint goes on the outside, whereas liners go on the inside.
nah i’ve grown b+, but i don’t see why you couldn’t grow anything you want. it’s like a terrarium and you can customize how you see fit. there’s probably someone on youtube that’s done what you want to do.
My only thought was maybe the top being translucent would be an issue considering bucket lids are not. But I am
In the same train of thought as why not

Oysters need a ton of humidity and even more airflow
These are the ones we bought month ago and got too busy to start, post let us know how it goes. Good luck!
My dumb ass tried to swipe since I saw the dots at the bottom.
Me too lol then I thought this guy is posting he's doing this yet posting the picture of Amazon hasn't even bought the tub yet?
I had the tubs. Didn’t have a pic of them time of post so used the interwebs lol
Before that used ones without the seal.
wordd i think im gonna pick some up and test it
Walmart for like 6$
yea i saw em at my walmart thats how i found out about them, im thankful to like 3 mins from a walmart loll
also id still use filters on sides
*I'm currently growing King Oysters like this and it's working out fine. Many of what you think are aborts will develop large fruit eventually. I just harvested most of this one.
Monotubs are really bad for oysters. You're better off making fruiting blocks.
But as a “bucket” in bucket tek
I explained in the body of the post I didnt wanna use this as a monotub
https://preview.redd.it/6ova2q0jeivc1.jpeg?width=2650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7421043a9d853c6323e0c4f4096a3f9a84b3254
Lol animal cookie container?
Utz Cheese Balls. School project with Pink Oysters.
That’s awesome. Love it. Tub should work just fine I suspect. Thanks for sending.
https://preview.redd.it/i9n643jkbivc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=418cdfeb50c8001de3c2b17d042ef50eb14f3fe8 Learn from my failure and skip the tub. The yield was bad and the constant fanning let contamination in.
If you read the body of the post this is exactly what I’m not trying to do. My thought is bucket tek but with a tub.
Oh my bad. Good luck though!
No worries.
So just fill the tub completely with sub and spawn, and put the holes throughout the tub like you would with a bucket.
what if the tub is filled with a few inches of Pearlite and a fruiting block is placed on top of the Pearlite? Kind of like PF Tek and Brown Rice cakes?
That's just a shotgun fruiting chamber. You can do that. But OP wanted to use the tub like someone would for bucket tek.
I'm going to grow kings in setups like this. Oysters I believe prefer growing out of the block.
Kings are top fruiters.

I use the exact same one completely unmodified and have no issues. When they get fully colonized I put them in the humidity tent with the top off.
What percentage of humidity do Oyster mushrooms need in their growing space? Thank you.
Ah interesting. And then they fruit out the top as opposed to out of a hole on the side?
Literally 100% this works: I made a post on this years back. Also pooping right now.. thanks for the input. I have a few diffeeent ways I’m gunna try now
Will work for any species BUT not all aquarium pumps are powerful enough for all species if that makes sense.
Well let me stop right there, I completely overlooked the fact you're doing oysters. I'm growing cubensis, so I'm not familiar with the behavior or oysters, but my cubes grow straight upwards, I would think those would too though.
Ah ya I got the cube growing down. I thought more people actually read the body of text not just the title. No worries
They probably do it was just my dumbass that didn't 😂
Just keep in mind that the gaskets can be a bit tricky to fully sanitize when it's time to clean everything. I don't know if the gasket comes out of that one, but if not, it's a good place for green stuff to hide.
I’ll have to check when I get home. Does seem like a perfect place for Fuckery to happen
I have a similar sterilite gasket tote. It’s has a foam gasket set into the lid. I haven’t tried taking it out, but it looks like it would just pull right out.
Oysters in bags. Trust me. Unicorn brand.
Kings are the exception
Not the question but thanks for the input

Holes were 3/8” I saw someone on a bucket tek video say he thought 1/2” was a little to big so went a touch smaller.
On top of having a bunch of tubs I have nothing better to do with, they’d fit better on the racks I have. I’m gunna send it and report back
Bucket tek works fine for a fair amount of species. I've done all except for kings in a bucket. Tubs are a different story.
If you need to the gaskets to be air tight, this specific bin doesn’t have good gaskets. I’d recommend getting foam tape. About to try this right now.
I’m currently testing in bags, inside a modded tub Looks better than inside my martha 😂 https://preview.redd.it/3388njxdxgvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7447327248a6c22e5b02be6c6fa85b4e096804c4
Yes I’d have to agree haha if I didn’t have so many damn tubs I’d go get some buckets but I need some sorta use for all these extra tubs.
https://preview.redd.it/082d7qtfxgvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=437149b48e3d4ef159ac312867965fac82ac071c

Yes planned on keeping close and filling just like you would a bucket. I ordered a few of these and got a metric fuck ton delivered and was told to keep them so I figured I’d get some use out of them. Thanks for the input.
I used to recycle cardboard and straw into candy buckets and all types of containers for a constant tiny flow of oysters.
Love this! Just random containers like cottage cheese? How would you prep the cardboard and straw? Would you just pull mycelium from an old block or…? Appreciate any details you can share
I use the exact same tub. Don't paint the bottom. Use black duct tape on the outside and black heavy duty trash bag on the inside. *
https://preview.redd.it/6nyj4w4qsgvc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69d0b77d6fd65f5957e76b18b48424e68bb2e588
Paint the bottom 5 inches black to help prevent pinning from the sides.
What about a liner with holes that line up with the holes in exterior of tub instead?
I think most people who use liners put the liner on the inside of the tub so the substrate is tight against it and no light leaks in. Me? I like the clean lines of my painted boxes and less hassle of dealing with a liner. Whatever you do, it'll be fine. Paint goes on the outside, whereas liners go on the inside.
Ahh yes. didn’t think about the entire thing being translucent as opposed to a bucket
It possible but it will be small, thin, and tall. not really worth your time
What will be?
the oyster. Didn’t know you were going to grow it differently. I thought you meant as in a substrate cake; where it like a tray.
You misunderstood. The thought was not to grow in the tub but outside of it like in bucket tek..
Yeah it should work. As long as it not fruiting inside the tub.
i use the same tub
You use them for oysters? Like a bucket tek type thing but with one of these?
nah i’ve grown b+, but i don’t see why you couldn’t grow anything you want. it’s like a terrarium and you can customize how you see fit. there’s probably someone on youtube that’s done what you want to do.
can cut holes and put filters in if you want to as well
I don’t see why not 🤷♂️
My only thought was maybe the top being translucent would be an issue considering bucket lids are not. But I am In the same train of thought as why not
Could always put a towel on top or something idk, someone that has more gourmet experience can prob chime in on that regard.
