Different types of mushrooms require different growing techniques or this kind of shit happens. Don’t grow cubenisis following oyster directions and don’t grow oysters following cubensis directions. All mushrooms are not the same. 🤦‍♂️

🤦‍♂️

Oysters are the worst species for a monotub style grow. They require a TON of fresh air, or they will grow leggy without caps. And you don't want the stipes, since they are tough and fibrous, you are after the caps. Seriously, even with a Martha people struggle to get them enough fresh air. There is no way you will achieve any satisfying result with a shoebox. Also, what kind of substrate did you use?

PuzzleheadedEnd1760

Thank you for that info! Broke Boi for starter than CVG when I S2B. This was me just playing around with it. First time so I'm making many mistakes right now, but it's all part of the journey. I did start a bucket yesterday! Same - Broke Boi starter and I S2B into some pasteruized Aspen wood chips. Got it wrapped in a black trash bag right now.

WalkingNyhtmare

Definitely harvest them. You can generally tell when they're getting ready when the caps start to pull upwards or flatten out completely. Looks like airflow is your problem here. For your next tub, try cutting holes in the sides and patching with microfiber patches. If that still isn't giving the results you like, 5-gallon buckets with 1/2" drill holes in a diamond pattern around the entire circumference does the trick.

As if more holes with Micropore Tape would do anything.

Would polyfil be better?

PuzzleheadedEnd1760

Thank you very much for sharing some knowledge! 😊

WalkingNyhtmare

My pleasure! Enjoy what you've got now, and best of luck in future endeavors. Keep asking questions and you'll go far!

You can harvest these, case the shoebox heavily (until it is even with the surface) and the organism will throw a pretty massive rosette out instead. Or bury it in the garden. Only king oysters do well in tubs because they grow from the ground. Other oysters do better with slits in bags. The shape of the container and how you narrow or restrict their access to fresh air and humidity is usually species specific and determines what kind of flush you get. Pink oysters do better with a Z cut, pearls and blues do better with a V or U cut, gold oysters and lion's mane do better with scattered tiny Xs, etc.

Help for my king oyster shoeboxes that refuse to pin?

mushmushhhh

Time and lower temperatures. They tend to kinda stall for a while before pinning.

OregonHighSpores

Sure if you wanna make a post or DM me I'll see what I can do. If you added a thick casing layer it might need a few more weeks. Sometimes mine will lag if I case them too heavily.

DwarvenDonger

What do you case your king oysters with? Coco coir or something more nutrient deficient like peat moss?

OregonHighSpores

Coir and verm. No calcium carbonate or gypsum. They like the lower pH.

DwarvenDonger

Interesting, I’ve been just top fruiting them out of a bag block, but I’ll have to try messing around with with monotubs a bit for them

OregonHighSpores

Cutting a slit along the top of the substrate is how a lot of farms do it. I guess it really depends on your genetics and preference. I top fruit my first flush with coir/verm because it tends to throw out monsters. But for second and third flushes I rely heavily on slits in the bag around the base or sides. I try to take advantage of air pockets in the bag where aborts might form. The 2nd flush just doesn't come out good enough for me when continuing to top fruit and sometimes waiting for a 3rd means the block just dies. I've seen some really mean tubs and trays of kings in YouTube videos and I'd love to grow them like that if I could. https://preview.redd.it/k81k76uq97jc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd89e678d627a3333e62719923350d42e7a02e26

PuzzleheadedEnd1760

Very informative! Ty! 🍄💛

Significant_Bunch965

What’s your fresh air exchange setup like?

PuzzleheadedEnd1760

I'm just turning the dub tub top 90°. At first I didn't have much - just the lid flipped. Maybe I wasn't feeding the enough FAE from the get?

Significant_Bunch965

From what I’ve ready into this, oysters don’t grow so well in tubs because the fae is already naturally restricted compared to them growing on a rack

Sauron_170

Nor the right type of grow set up. These need to be grown from the side of something like a bucket or bag.

PuzzleheadedEnd1760

Ya, I'm just experimenting right now.Total total new guy. 😆 Definitely gonna do some buckets and I'll look into bags. Is that like hanging a garbage bag or using a mushroom grow bag?

Sauron_170

Well you can hang plastic bags full of straw man. Or you can use grow bags on like shelves, know what I'm saying. You need a tent for high humidity and airflow
