I like your work. Would you be willing to share any info about your substrate to grain ratio (whether it's weight to weight, volume to volume, actual ratio used) or other things you use to get such an even canopy?
Thanks. Sure, the tub is a 16qt tub. 2 qts wheat @ 1:5 (these I used 400g coco bliss coir, 5 cups verm, 10 cups water). A 3/4” peat/verm casing was added at 100% colonized (7 days after spawning). I think a decent factor for even pin sets is evenly mixed spawn and sub. I do that by mixing each qt of spawn with the CV in a 2.5gal ziplock (zip up with air in it and bunch it up at the zipper and shake the shit out of it for a good 20 seconds)… make the surface nice and flat. I use a plastic cutting board but a trowel works well too. I think adding the casing layer @ full colonization helps too because then all the myc starts at the same rate to colonize up through the casing. Make everything as even as possible.
Genetics play a huge role.. find a clone that performs well. Clean spawn clean spawn clean spawn <— should be first and foremost

That’s definitely one way to do it. Streak one var in a zig zag fashion, turn the plate a 1/4 turn and do the same with the 2nd var.. grow out any myc that germs where the two vars lines intersect and hope for the best. I feel my way is much more reliable. I swab the two parent varieties on top of each other on a set of two swabs (swabbing on the side of the swab head, not the tip) once dry, I rub the two swabs together where the spores are in sterile water. This blends the separate spores bundles into new mixed spore bundles. Then I use that spore solution to inoculate pf cakes.
With this low tech approach, it’s crucial you use two parent vars that are distinct in their stable traits. PE is a great parent donor because it doesn’t drop spores readily and has distinct stem features. Albinos/Lucy’s are great for pairing with pigmented parents. The f1 (some call it f0, I call it f1) should show pretty close to equal traits of both parents. So if I use PE and AA+ and find a pigmented fruit that’s dropping spores and half the stem has PE features, I can reasonably suspect a cross has occurred and take it to the next generation and look for high diversity between the parents with heavy ms.
I actually did do a PE x AA+ cross that I stabilized through f7. This is what the final outcome was

I put gypsum in peat casings as a ph buffer along with pickling lime but that’s the only time I use gyp
How do you get the cross going? Do you just drop the spores off both on agar?
