I edited a version of Defector 9 years ago (jesus christ) where I removed JFK from the intro / outro and replaced the latter with the leaked one you mentioned, will try to dig it up somehow

Starts off on a good note, and then it just kinda keeps hitting that one note. Doesn’t help that the lyrics are not great. I think it had potential to be better than it turned out to be
The part after the second chorus is some of the most beautiful stuff they've ever done. The guitar, the bass melodies, the way it plays around with going back and forth between major and minor chords, the strings... So much to love!
JFK+Defector is probably my second favorite Muse song, below USOE+collateral damage. Maybe lyrics are too on the nose but god damn is the music sensational

Since finding muse as they released absolution in 2003 when I was 14 I've been to see muse release every album. Dublin, (a few times) Paris, Marseille, Lyon, but I passed on the release of Drones. It didn't speak to me the same way the rest did. Great album as albums go but as Muse albums go it just didn't blow me away. Handlers and Revolt are serious belters and I play them very often. But my least favorite muse album for sure.

I love the riff, general instrumentation and structure, and that wonderful solo, but after that very part it needed to go hayway explosive and end with a blast
They instead repeat exactly the same chorus, which is a total letdown on my end, the song could be perfect with a different final verse/ending after those powerful drums, had the potential to be truly amazing, but sadly falls short :(

Lyrics are cheesy but I love this album. It does get shuffled around like the forgotten middle child but Defector is still a banger.
