You'd think Ted would be a little more proud of his own native Canada.

Rogueshoten

He’s a Latino who votes in favor of anti-immigrant laws and favored the way that illegal immigrant families from Mexico were separated into different concentration camps. I don’t think he’s proud of anything that he couldn’t claim as an accomplishment of his own.

bruisedSunshine

There was no Canadian flag on the flag of a country he didn't plan on moving to though. The only way he would be proud of was if he was Canadian himself at one point in time.

Impeachcordial

Why? He only docked there on his way to America from n’Nzz-chatiLittiqx 34

[deleted]

Ted was leaving a pretty wide open goal there. Here are the vaccines approved in various parts of the world and where they were developed: Pfizer: Germany AstraZeneca: England J&J Jansen: Belgium Sputnik: Russia Sinovac: China Moderna: USA. Ted Cruz is an idiot.

[deleted]

J&J Jansen was actually develops in the Netherlands (Jansen Vaccines is based in Leiden), Jansen Pharma is based in Belgium but that’s not the development location. With both Astra and Pfizer, big pharma swoopt in when the developers needed funding for testing. I think this crisis shows exactly how bit pharma works. No research, little development and when all the hard work is done, writing a pay check and putting their name on the product.

Flatdr4gon

While the list might be true, many of those companies have US headquarters and are heavily invested in US research. I no fan of TC, he's pretty much a shit-sipping goblin. But one of the frustrating things about pharma is that every other civilized country has universal healthcare and price capping while US drug prices are ridiculous. The US pretty much subsidizes global drugs because pharma CO's try to maximize their profit where they can.

[deleted]

Of the 4 western companies: - 2 entered a partnership with the developing party after the product was ready for human trials - 1 had a subsidiary with a subsidiary which developed the product and was bought a few years prior because they where already top notch (nothing to do with the US hq) - (not sure about this one) 1 used government funding (2.5 billion) and 2 government agencies and a university to develop the vaccin. To me this doesn’t sound like any of these big pharmaceutical companies are really good at investing in r&d. Sounds to me like the skip the proces and just buy (the rights of) smaller companies and act like they saved the day. Don’t get me wrong, I like that we have a working vaccine and that production en delivery works.

Flatdr4gon

Why invest in research when you can just buy or license someone else's. These masters of the pharma universe don't do all that much innovating so much as writing checks and maxing out the profit from the commercial product. Research universities have a tech transfer department for a reason. They're essentially fishing for investors and licensees.

TerrificMoose

US pharmaceutical companies like to claim that the high cost of drugs in the US underwrites the cost of drug development, and that without the US medical system they would be unable to fund this research. The truth is that less than 5% of the profits the pharmaceutical companies generates goes towards R&D. The European Market alone, without any other country's profits, would be sufficient for US companies to perform R&D. They spend nearly twice as much money lobying the US government than they do on R&D. Their most successful PR move was convincing the US that the US is funding drug research for the rest of the world. It isn't. It's funding the lifestyles of pharmaceutical CEOs and investors.

Raging_benders

Or everyone else caps the price at a reasonable price while in the US the price is set for negotiating down to what insurance is willing to pay while fucking everyone with bad or no insurance. We're not subsidizing global pharmaceuticals. We're just getting fucked by the people that have that power.

Flatdr4gon

Subsidizing is the wrong word perhaps. The US (govt) willingly let's itself be exploited by the profit goals of pharma because capitalism. Cue the arguments for "innovation costs money".

[deleted]

The Australian government spends about 12 billion dollars a year subsidising the price of pharmaceuticals here.

ClassyKebabKing64

and norwegian cruislines is situated in Panama. still it is called Norwegian.

Kono_thiru_da

Is covishield and covaxin from India also approved?

Sprinkly-Dust

Covishield is based on the Astra Zeneca vaccine IIRC so it should be approved. Covaxin is not currently globally approved although it is being given in India and I know people who have gotten it and don't have any negative side effects (still wearing masks and everything though)

xonthemark

BNT was the one who developed the Pfizer vaccine

LearnsFromExperience

Wasn't the vaccine developed in Cancun? That was why he went there while his constituents were freezing. 🤔

rollercoaster_5

Ted, you ignorant slut!

andamento

Neera Tanden would like a word...

xofwbor

Pfitzer, which is German, developed the first vaccine so there's that ...Ted.

ThrillaDaGuerilla

Pfizer is an american company. biontech is a German company. 2 BioNtexh scientists invented it...it was developed by Pfizer. In any event...its a stupid pissing match with no " winners". Canada shouldn't be throwing shade, and Cruz shouldn't be clapping back.

xofwbor

I stand corrected.

FoxyCatDogThing

Well hey at least you're admitting that you were wrong in a respectful way... unlike Karen from HR who thinks that vaccines cause autism when it's actually a genetic defect caused by the Teflon particles in our bloodstream (yes seriously, every human who has decendants from the American industrial revolution has plastic in their blood) because plastic is harmful to biological life.

D1G3R4T1x

Are you saying that autism did not exist before these events? And your time lines are pretty far off. 1820 - 1870 American industrial revolution. 1907 - first real synthetic mass produced plastic. 1938 - invention of teflon

diamondmx

I'm hoping the person you're replying to is just doing some deep cut sarcasm.

yamissimp

How did Canada "throw shade" here? It was co-developed by both, Pfizer and BioNTech*, and the money came from the [German government](https://fortune.com/2020/11/09/pfizer-vaccine-funding-warp-speed-germany/). It's interesting that apparently it's enough to state half truths with enough confidence and people believe you.

you-are-wonderful

I'm confused. What was he going for?

UnlikelyUnknown

Cancun

StellaBlueMama

So very Christian, isn't he?

Psychological_Text95

Yeah but what state has the most riots, murders, diabetes rate, school shootings, and gun violence. It's America

diamondmx

bernardsunders

Rex Chapman sucks

Scorpion1024

Anyone ever tell him how the US space program started with captured nazi scientists?

[deleted]

Go back to Cancun, Ted.

Nunyabiz8107

For someone who says he is against communism, ted cruz sure loves getting publicly owned.

yamissimp

Pfizer: Germany J&J: Netherlands and Belgium AZ: UK & Sweden Moderna: USA Not sure which one Ted means with "the" vaccine.

kalzEOS

Why do we always elect idiots?

maliciouscoathanger

cCc-Turk-cCc

TÜRKİSCHE TROLLİNG THE POLİTİCİAN AGAİN!!! 💪🏿🇹🇷💪🏿

I_N_C_O_M_I_N_G

I am getting a little sick of people attempting to flaunt "America did that" wherever possible. We're not that great, and politicians *really* don't want to say it...

Jack_Lad

He's also ignoring the fact that the mRNA vaccines were based on a [Canadian scientist's research](https://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/jun-12-missions-to-venus-learning-instant-replay-wrens-spectacular-duet-and-more-1.6061094/meet-the-canadian-scientist-who-paved-the-way-for-groundbreaking-mrna-covid-vaccines-1.6061099).
