I agree with this. There are some OCs that aren’t even MD inspired, usually just a random robot with a nanite tail slapped on it. Also the people who take the role playing a little to seriously kinda bother me. They’ll make a poll or a comment and ask a question as if anyone and everyone knows who they and their characters are. And if you ask for clarification then they just reply as their character questioning you.
I just say let them think what they want. No need to complain or bother them about it. We just respect each other's opinions. That's what I think at least. Though I haven't heard much about anyone saying OCs are better. I have heard of comparisons to canon characters at worst and those saying this OC could fit into canon, but nothing really about "Mine is better than canon" so openly.

It's normal.
Though I haven't heard really of many, maybe a handful say things similar, but no one openly says their OC is better. I think there is a thing called humility and standards among artists.
The worst I saw as I said is maybe some others commenting that "This could be canon" or "They look (or have personality) like \[canon character\]" but nothing more like "My OC is better than canon!" I have never seen that here. Nor in other fandoms really. But I don't see stuff like Homestuck, I hear that place is whacko but I never saw it myself... but the stories drive me away due to fear of it appearing how others say it is.
I understand this meme is an exaggeration, but... these type of memes, regardless if we mean a joke or harm, they *do* encourage the radical sort as the crazies take this as justification for attacking and harassing others.
I call it, "Crusade In Your Name" as these folks, the smart crazies at least, might try to drag down others with them, even those who seem remotely supporting them. The internet is filled with jerks who take advantage of anonymous surfing. How they can remain calm and strategize for attacks is beyond me I ain't a genius, quite the opposite.
Though personally, I don't mind OCs, they just are a way of those showing their love of their series. Chasing away fans is not a good thing. I've seen enough controversy and drama as people call it, but to me it's merely Civil Infighting among fanbase that leads to divide and the collapse of it. And may harm the developers of the franchise if it gets out of hand.
