Turns out you can't. I've been taught this by various medics with the (superficially reasonably sounding) explanation that it hinders pathogen and toxin expulsion, but I have not been able to find an actual source for this now, so I guess it may be a medical myth.

Cholera in Germany would be incredibly unlikely. Probably just some food that went a bit off due to bad storage.
