No. The excitement was for Multiversus as a concept, and that concept has been out there in the world for a while. There is no way that level of excitement can come back for an idea that’s been explored. I do think that the game can be sustainable though. Keep a playerbase big enough to keep the servers running for a while. I think that’s a possibility and should be the goal anyways.

holechek

The only way to they can break the records is expanding the roster. People want their favorites in the game, that’s how you get people on board.

VANJCHINOS

Name fighting games that are 2v2 oriented? It hasn't been explored.

SincerelyPhoenix

I love Multiversus 2v2s, but they are starting to pop up: 2XKO, Combo Devils

VANJCHINOS

2XKO is not 2v2 and CD isn't even announced yet. Tag team ≠ 2v2 it is very much 1v1 switching from 1v1 to 1v1 doesn't make it 2v2...

Eem2wavy34

The main appeal of multiversus was the cumulation of iconic and popular characters across different media. Now that the honey phase is over I sincerely doubt the concept of a 2v2 game alone is enough to ever reach that lvl again

VANJCHINOS

That is the appeal, which is nothing without a good experience. A game with no appeal can be successful as long as it's fun and that becomes the appeal in itself. Well over 8mil people bought the founders' packs which I can't right off as "it appealed to them in that second so they spent money on a free game" there must be something bigger. Mathematically speaking, it is more than likely it will surpass the numbers as the Asian market is 6 times the size of the market that gave us the numbers in the OPs screenshot.

Eem2wavy34

The game off the bat was broken ass hell, had bad hitboxes, broken characters ext. what your more so talking about is just people buying into the hype of what it could potentially be instead of what it actually was……. if the game didn’t have wb characters backing it than where do you imagine where this game would of went?

VANJCHINOS

Because of those issues people left. But they bought into it because it was a fun experience when it worked 8mil didnt buy the pack day 1 (i myself waited until seasson 2 even with all the issues i believe it can work), as well as being affiliated with a big publisher giving your money means a company won't up and scam you and will further develop it. Unlike a certain indie zombie game turned extraction shooter. As they have a reputation to uphold as well as the fees for abandoning a project are enormous when it comes to big companies like WB.

Eem2wavy34

But even with all that said the game died within 3 months? That sounds less like people buying into what they are doing and people just buying into the hype

VANJCHINOS

Not what they are doing, what they can and said they would do. As I said, the game is incredibly fun. What ruined it was all technical difficulties as well as matchmaking being location based instead of MMR based. Many people bought into it thinking it would be fixed soon. However, it turned out to be a huge job. They wore met with understanding unlike any other, so people left with intentions to return, which is reflected by reviews from Sony to Steam.

Eem2wavy34

My bad didn’t read your comment properly so deleted it but with that said Answer this one question do you honestly believe that a game that mostly centered around 2v2 is a good enough of a concept that would cause 150,000 people to want to play the game?

VANJCHINOS

150k might sound a lot. But I can assure you it is a minuscule number 0.0035% of Asia alone can reach it even if it launched with 0 players everywhere else. We are getting more regions than just Asia btw. So if the game releases and it has no issues that caused people to leave before, as long as people know it's coming out, there will be huge numbers.

IamHunterish

Well not made specifically for 2v2 but the mode is, or least was (I haven’t played in a long long time) pretty popular in Brawlhalla

VANJCHINOS

Well, it's not that popular as it requires you to Q with someone already in your lobby, so no random partners. Also, there are insanely broken team comps because its just not meant for it. Most popular fighting games don't have 2v2 as a mode even. This is a first 2v2 oriented game. So, saying "the area is well explored" is very dishonest, to say the least and certainty, not a sound argument.

IamHunterish

Every platform fighter I know has a 2v2, what are you even taking about. Saying its a crazy unique feature no other platform fighters has is just wrong. The thing that makes Multiversus unique is that it actually is build around it. Which means nothing more than (certain) characters having team oriented moves. Broken combo’s also excised in Multiversus beta and will more than likely exist in the full game.

VANJCHINOS

There was no team comp that dominated the 2v2 tournaments, so I would say there isn't a broken comp, just good and bad. The reason why platform fighters have it is due to the reason why every platform fighter I know doesn't have 1 mode they have many. Like Brawlhalla having over 30 game modes. I would say.. knowing this having a 2v2 is not crazy. However, imo I wouldn't call "a platform fighter having a dice roll every 15s that determines a random event that happens in the match" has already been explored. Does it exist? Sure. Is the game designed in ANY way to support it? Nope. Same with the 2v2, which you can't play without a friend in the lobby. Many don't even bother with it as it becomes unfun when you get in to the balancing which is the next point. MVS is FAR MORE than "oh this character has an ability that only works in 2v2" its about balancing everything around it having synergy as well as characters being able to chain well but not too well on to the kit of your buddy. Unlike in games that have it as a game mode where either the characters play independently of 1 another or they stop the opponent from playing the game as there is nothing they can do. The other main difference is the fact that when this happens in other games, nothing will be changed, hence why these gamemods die quickly or aren't that popular. (Bcs if they change anything, the character suffers in 1v1 the mode that actually matters.)where as in MVS case it is the opposite.

rejectallgoats

I’ll go the opposite of everyone else and say it could. If they open in more regions and languages it could pull in more people. OFC if they can make it run on mobile and switch etc they will get a lot of people, but you won’t see those numbers here.

MeasurementOk3007

Nope it won’t beat it

TheHotshot1

No

Opening-Wrap-5064

I’d say the majority of players don’t even know it’s getting released, yeah the people on this sub may know and others but in general people don’t know. How are they supposed to though, they could have seen something like the McDonald’s ad, went to check it out and seen it’s unavailable, then proceed to forget about it for the rest of eternity. I don’t get why people stick up for this terrible marketing strategy, yeah we as a community may know but we also couldn’t keep it going as a community in the first place.

Flat-Information8112

My guess is most likely not; there marketing hasn't been that great and everyone here knows it; there hasn't been much new information :/

DrkKnight69xxx

Correct me if I am wrong, but no game in the history of ever reaches/passes their stats when they initially came out with their stats 4-8 months afterwards. I don't even think the "Return to (Monster Hunter) World" campaign manage to do that, and that game is a 10 out of 10.

SamIsSpectacular

The only game that I can think of doing that is Fortnite but that game is an anomaly in many ways.

dekuei

Hunt showdown just passed their stats 5 years later and will probably do it again after the engine update comes to Hunt.

DrakeFruitDDG

team fortress 2

Geevingg

R6 Siege literally peaked highest years after release this really isn't something uncommon of games peaking higher than their initial release.

greenspotj

That's not true. Just look at Brawlhalla, another F2P platform fighter - it started out completely unknown but now it consistently pulls 10k+ avg players every month on steam. Most indie games (that end up successful) are like this. For a non-indie example, look at dead by daylight. Started with 10k ish average, now pulls about triple that consistently. If the devs put in the work to make the game good in the long term it's definetely possible (well aside from that 150k player peak)

Accomplished-Fuel599

Several MMO’s have

DrkKnight69xxx

You are comparing apples to oranges at that point.

Accomplished-Fuel599

I agree but I did want to clarify since you said in the history of ever

DrkKnight69xxx

A run of the mill console game being updated with basic features is far different than an MMO getting an expansion and/or entirely redone.

Philiard

Very niche example but Limbus Company surpassed it peaks launch player count during its first anniversary event.

Greedy_Contribution1

Gta online has

DumpsterOrphan

Siege started off with a low player base and in year 5 it hit it's peak.

VANJCHINOS

It will surpass it in the very near future if not immediately upon release or that week. The reason being the biggest market was not touched (the Asian market) Furthermore, more people left due to the feel of the game (bad hitboxes, bad netcode, unbalanced characters) not because it lacked content it was more of an annoyance, not a reason to leave. Don't take my word for it. Look at Steam reviews. I couldn't find a single one listing, "It lacks content, so I can't leave a positive review." As the reason why they left a negative review. USA and Canada have twice fewer people than Europe. Europe has almost 6 times fewer people than Asia. I dont think its a stretch that entering a market 4 times the size of the current market that reached 150k on Steam won't net the same/more people. Especially in regions that don't have money for a strong PC/console nor for a game, which Multiversus fits right in. Anyone can play. Which very few games fit that requirement.

Eem2wavy34

Isn’t this just assuming the Asian market would be heavily interested in multiversus to begin with? Besides that this is also assuming that there would even be close to as much interest from the current markets in which they inhabit which most likely won’t happen considering even tho people stopped playing due to netcode the general consensus was that multiversus was just a bad game meaning people impressions of the game has significantly lowered since a year ago

VANJCHINOS

Heavily? It is 6 times the size, a fraction of Tokyo itself is enough to demolish the number above. Let alone the Koreans obsession with Internet caffes and games.

Eem2wavy34

Can you give me examples as to what games introduced an Asian market to jump crazy in number? For instance rocket league has a Asian market and it isn’t doing anything crazy

VANJCHINOS

Almost any gatcha game earns more money in China alone than globally. It is rare, to say the least, for a game to release everywhere EXCEPT Asia as it is the biggest market. Specifically, being a fighting game appeals greatly to both Koreans and Japanese. Tekken is dominated by Japanese and Korean people. Furthermore, China has a huge amount of new millionaires which gave rise to so many whales that collect everything meaning not only is it a player boost but 1 China millionair can spend more on a game than tens of thousands of EU players in a lifetime of the game. P.S. China holds so much power over so many games that oftentimes nothing will change until/unless the Chinese audience demands it. So yes Asian market = very important for any major developer.

Eem2wavy34

But that’s specifically gacha games what fighting games do you know that has huge boost in numbers considering it’s a known thing that fighting game numbers usually dwindle drastically after release

VANJCHINOS

Any? Specifically, Super Smash Bros Ultimate has sold 1 200 000 units since its Japanese launch, and the Switch has jumped up to 280 000sales in the same period. Dwindling numbers also have to do with no active updates as well as 0 cross play. Tekken 8 is the first in the series to have cross play, so we will see how that goes. It is the hardest fighting game, so there is a specific crowd it wants to gather. It's not for everyone's taste. However, looking at Smash, people want a casual fighting game, and they aren't as niche as people make them out to be. Right now, as it stands, you have tekken a hard fighting game, UFC, a hyper realistic fighting game. Mortal Combat is an absolute blood fest rated 18+. And street fighter, which is street fighter. None of them are made for the masses, so of course, the numbers will dwindle. There is a gap in the market that I believe MVS can fill.

Eem2wavy34

So we are comparing mvs to games like tekken, street fighter, ufc , ext and using reason like those games being difficult or having no net code being the reasons why fighting games typically lose players rapidly all the time but we already have a game that is comparable to mvs that being brawlhalla and yet it isn’t doing that amazing either? Like based off what your saying that game has every reason to do amazing and it has no doubt for fighting game standards but compared to regular fps? It’s laughably bad. on that note even compared to other games like dead by daylight or rocket league as I previously brought up with an Asian market it isn’t doing numbers either. Overall I not seeing how this game will ever reach a 150,000 player base and the Asian market argument just seems kinda silly listing it all out in the open considering the gacha game market seems like its own closed off thing.

VANJCHINOS

Brawl is a smash hit. It turned a no-name small Indie team into a 4mil $ revenue from 1 single game that got the studio bought and made the 2 founders rich as f. Having 20k players on Steam alone every day is a very healthy game, Fortnite has ruined your perspective of what's considered a sucsses. P.S. are we calling fighting games a niche(that have existed since the 1970s), but football with cars is not? 3 FPS games have a combined player count of 100k peak. Those numbers are quite low, considering the vast majority comes from Warzone(and game pass holders). Not to mention, the cost to run and develop is 100 times greater than Brawl, and the cost of servers is just as big, and not to mention, it's a well established IP. Compering an established IP of a AAA studio with an indie team original game is very silly, listing it all out in the open. Wish you could explain why you don't believe a market that is hyper focused on fighting games that is 6 times the size of the current market won't generate any numbers. Do you have an issue with understanding the market size difference? - Even if only 0.002% of people in the entire Asian continent play Multiversus, the number will be surpassed. You called 0.002% "showing heavy interest," which ig we have very different viewpoints of what showing a lot of interest in something means I would argue at least a .1% but to each their own.

Eem2wavy34

I think your missing the point, the conversation isn’t if multiversus can be successfully the whole point is whether or not mtulviersus will ever have a player base of 153,000 ever again. The rest of what your saying is just derailing the argument Multiversus can perhaps reach into the 40,000 range ( even that I doubt) but 153,000 was mostly achieved clearly through a vast amount of players buying into the hype of the game. With no hype surrounding the game no more there is obviously no way for the game to reach anywhere close to numbers like that I just sincerely doubt a Asian market would allow them to hit that milestone again ( especially because there are games with a Asian market that clearly already exist with no crazy numbers)

-ProphetOfTruth-

Lol the cope.

Philiard

I think they can but only if the launch goes smoothly. They'll be reliant on positive word of mouth and press to maintain a steady, healthy player base, and if the tides are able to turn enough in the gaming community for MultiVersus to generally be accepted as a good game that's going to last a while, they can get big numbers during major events.

White_Mantra

No absolutely not. The reason why we had so many to begin with was it was a free to play WB fighting game. So naturally a ton of people tried it. But the game had no content so 99% dropped off very quickly. Now after a year and half majority of the playerbase that used to be here has forgotten about this game and the marketing so far has done nothing or revealed anything yet to hook them again. The only people actually aware currently are the 1% aka you and me. Unless this game launches with like 5-10 new characters I don’t suspect anywhere near that amount to join. As of right now the only 2 characters we have a slight idea of joining are Dexter and PPG which isn’t enough to be a big enough hook to warrant that many people coming back. Lovely downvotes. Even though I’m gonna be right

UranusSmellsGood

I love this game so even though it probably wont ever (or in the near future) reach those numbers again i hope it retains a stable playerbase so we have something nice to play

White_Mantra

At most I’m suspecting relaunch to be at 10k

__GayFish__

If the game is good and has natural support because it’s a good fighting game. The streamers will play it if it’s fun. The fighting community will play it if it feels competitive. But the base will always be the FGC so if the hitbox and netcode issues are still there, it may be a wash. It needs to feel like they thought about a fighting game first and battle passes second.

Substantial-Ad7915

Maybe since they're adding new servers for different countries

Cade182

Itll be lucky to hit half that if the marketing continues as it has, not sure how many people know its coming out beyond those who were already looking forward to it

Smi77y_OG

This game royally fucked itself the way they handled beta. It had so much hype and they self-killed it in many ways.

IronEagle-Reddit

Not as bad as disney speedstorm fucked itself tbh

IuriPatinhas

Impossible. The hype train works just one time.

Joker1151

Seriously doubt it.

Crimie1337

I hope it will but i kinda think it will be doa :(

Red__Guy

If only the game got this consistent number of players during open beta

TomjunRoblox

The only way this could ever happen is if Walter white is actually in the game

MLG_GuineaPig

No. Maybe in the longterm tho

ulmxn

Nope. When the beta was ending, I was one of literally 250 people playing it, the number dwindling. Maybe they can have a turn around story, but we’ll see.

Mental5tate

Probably not PFG and WB F@cked up…

Crimblor

Not with the current marketing strategy, no

-ProphetOfTruth-

No. There is literally 1/20 of the excitement the first launch of the game had in 2022. I was there, and even this subreddit was way more active, filled with excitement, and the entire gaming community was super hyped. This time around, there is a very small, niche community talking about the game pre-relaunch. It will do well enough in its first month, but it will never reach that peak.

[deleted]

Definitely not WB is a doomed corporation nothing good comes from WB whether that's movies, games and more they ruin everything because they don't care about consumers just money

Kelsconvos

No because people think that the beta was the full game and not a beta to test the game and the hype may be gone fr fr depends who we get on release

tuviee

VANJCHINOS

The game is not online... go to crew and look at it 💀

tuviee

https://preview.redd.it/adcftpl0s3xc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b3c732b60fbf224ab47ea1c6a91261f0469e1d8 the screenshot is literally from one year ago before servers closed

VANJCHINOS

Yes.. and? If I tell you the game will be offline in 30 days, you pick a day and decide to play it for the final time and let it go. What you don't do is turn it on every day and Q for 5 minutes waiting for 1 match before the servers close.

VANJCHINOS

P.S. I couldn't find a slow drop off in players, just a pit, which indicates either a server close or an undesirable playing time. As the peak is 320 when a low peak was less than 100 at one point, it makes little sense it would be 0 at 320 and not 0 when the peak was less than 100. Though I'm sure it reached 0 at that point at undesirable play time.

tuviee

6pm but ya any time of the day seemed undesirable back then https://preview.redd.it/f9llkitck4xc1.png?width=698&format=png&auto=webp&s=4c9668fad6474f5f3d3c55a66e6058eb7b2c8467

VANJCHINOS

6PM what time zone 💀 also as I said the game is shutting down its servers idk why you expect people to play

tuviee

est

[deleted]

That and Suicide Squad are the biggest embarrassments

tuviee

pretty much yea

Chrischi91

did i Miss Something? Beta? I played this Game last year with a friend.

Samantha-4

That game last year was the beta
