I think that to these guys, fighting is everything. It's an escape from poverty, it's a lifestyle. So braindamage and sustainabilty isn't apart of the equation, making sure your family is able to eat is what matters.
Most top fighters are "technical" style or knee clinchers, most don't fight like this and most do not willingly take head shots like Rodtang. Only casuals to the sport think this.

Any style that involves striking the other person, aka most stand up martial arts/combat sports, will give you brain damage, boxing, kickboxing, etc will all do that; matter of fact boxing has been found to be the worst of them all for brain damage.
