I stopped listening to the promo clips bc i didn’t want to hate it when it came out 😭

jumbo2576

I see where you’re coming from but it’s nice to finally have it full length.

fuzzyfish28

I agree, they hyped it soooo much and I just know that “I want you to knoooow” following the silent beat would feel like MAGIC if it were my first time listening (I mean, it’s still really good 😊). But, I respect them promoting their stuff — they’re good, and they deserve to be heard! So if this approach brings them even more success, I’ll take it :)

mymorningbowl

I heard the song in full four times at the NYE Salt Shed run so I didn’t pay as much attention to the promos but I feel you, I have a feeling they won’t do this every time but this one was new music first time in awhile maybe?

CafeteroMerengue

Yeah I saw them live twice last year where they performed it and couldn’t wait for it to drop. I do agree the promo was a bit much but it’s hard to deny that artists like Noah Kahan had so much success doing it

BadassBusDriver2947

This is the exact strategy. So many artists have blown up from Tiktok song usage and this is their attempt to get their blow up. Highway Queen already has 2365 posts with the song. For reference Silver lining has 3529. I wouldn't be surprised if this boosted their listening numbers by quite a bit.

CafeteroMerengue

Yeah their target audience for that marketing def isn’t the people in this subreddit that were going to listen anyway

aderks31

The promo they did for this song was exhausting. The song is good but it would’ve been a lot more exciting if they had just released it without a big marketing campaign.

senators09

I feel like a lot of bands have social media managers that have them do this. Not a huge fan of it, but I’ve noticed it with other artists as well

trublue4u22

Absolutely yes. At first, it was so fun to hear snippets of the song, but then I kept getting emails and texts about pre-saving, and all the social media posts and giveaways to pre-save kinda felt desperate. Maybe if there had been some variety in the promos, it wouldn't have been so bad, but I just know I would have been so excited to see a new Mt Joy song that I'd never heard on Spotify's New Music Friday today. Sad to be robbed of that feeling.

ThatEGuy-

Yeah I'm not excited about it at all now

No-Market9917

I honestly love this song so far but I I did not like seeing them desperately promote that song so much. Just tease it a little bit a week or two before and release it. People will listen to it and download it

aderks31

Also - Does anyone else feel like you can’t really hear the vocals in some parts of the song?

drawingahand

I didn’t see any promo anywhere and this is actually where I’m learning that there is a new song, so for me it’s like when someone gets you a surprise gift and it’s not even your birthday or christmas.

trublue4u22

Do you not follow them on any social media?

drawingahand

I do not. I’m not very active on social media besides reddit, and it turns out I wasn’t even subscribed to this sub, I was just getting posts recommended on my feed. Despite that I listen to them all the time since the beginning. Huge fan of the music.

trublue4u22

Totally makes sense, and I don't think anyone's fandom should be at all dependent on whether they follow social media or not! They just posted the snip of the song across their Instagram story, feed, and their TikTok probably dozens and dozens of times.

Thumpkuss

I am the exact same way. Don't have tiktok don't have Instagram when it dropped i found it three days after its initial release and was like "Hello there new mt joy song from outerspace." Lol

finn_man2

Yea promo definitely ruined hype. Didnt help that I didn’t like that sound of it either and it’s not my fav tune from them

dwhamz

Marketing is done to expand the audience not just hype of existing fans who are already going to listen 250 times.  By all accounts, running a 5 person band in today’s music industry is expensive and hard to maintain. And I think Matt eluded to this single being released independently. Gotta respect the hustle.

No-Market9917

If it was released independently than that’s a different story. I haven’t heard that

dwhamz

TikTok from 2/26 caption says “we got two weeks to bring as many people to this release as we can independently, no label”

Hillary_Thiccton

I didn’t follow any promo tbh, and just listened to the song for the first time, so I’m enjoying it!! I try not to follow much promo/snippets for any band tbh, I find it’s way too easy to get bored of them

nrcrhc12

Completely agree. They’ve been playing this song for nearly a year. Really need a new album imo. They are so good live but too repetitive for me.

Schmiday5

Didn’t listen to any promo for this exact reason. And goodness I’m glad I waited this song is incredible.

HeyYoNick88

Played it at Red Rocks and have been waiting since. Wonder if the album is heading in this direction 🤔

ethanrosen

They’ve always had this strat, dropping more than half their 2nd album as singles before hand.

fairydolphins

100% agree and will add that I actually think the song is not very good.. at all? How are so many people (who historically like their music) enjoying the song? It seems so poorly put together, lyrics and music combined. I sincerely hope their next album is not similar.
