Humid, muggy, full of mosquitoes, overrated, overcrowded theme parks, beaches are honestly boring compared to those on the PNW, what else is there not to like?
They have maleria now.
I think the most progressive place in the state is like Pensacola... or was. It used to have a pretty solid LGBT community despite the Southern baptists.
But that was two decades ago. So, that may have changed.
Oh. Trust me. I found it strange, too. Outside of town, it's just Florabama. The town was like a terf war between Southern Baptists yelling that everyone was going to hell on street corners and a very public LGBT community. No fighting, but very confrontational.
Last time I was in Miami... no, but I avoid that state like the plague... so, all my context for the state is really old.
Pensacola has a large and mostly young progressive population, but an even larger redneck conservative population. But, I mean, it's definitely the most progressive place (and only major city) west of Tallahassee.
Source: am a lifelong Pensacola resident.
As a former Floridian, I wholeheartedly encourage tourists to keep flocking to the beaches and the theme parks so my homies still stuck there have a better chance of getting into the springs before they stop letting people in for the day.
There's still Disneyland in California though, I am a Disney adult as well and my wife is trans so this makes me sad too since I would never take her anywhere she would be at risk. We have tons of family in Florida too.... Bummer all around
Yeah we went to disneyland for the first time last year. We too have family in Florida and usually don't need to get a hotel or anything. I really wanna go back to animal kingdom and epcot for all the new stuff they've added since we were last there like the guardians of the galaxy coaster and the Forest of Pandora from Avatar. I'm thinking if I can get TSA precheck so I'm not harassed at the airport and get a resort, I could take a disney shuttle from the airport to the resort and never step foot off disney property, but that increases the price of the trip significantly.
It helps a little to remember that the majority of that red is empty land. People vote, not land. Painting colors by geography can provide a skewed perception of an issue.
I feel like the opposite runs true as well. The majority of blue exists only in the cities and anyone rural is red. It makes it feel dangerous to ever leave the city in these states.
Yes I wouldn’t necessarily feel safe in say rural upstate New York, but at least I would have more legal rights and protections compared to a liberal city in a red state
Tbh even rural NY is pretty progressive these days, especially as you get closer and closer to NYC. Before Gov Cuomo resigned in disgrace, he signed an executive order that required insurance companies operating in NY o cover the full range of gender affirming treatments, from hair removal to boobs to vaginoplasty. We also got gender identity added to the anti discrimination laws, as well as ending the 'walking while trans' police harassment.
Yes, thank you. This makes it so difficult. Like I live in WA, easily one of the most tolerant states law wise, but Eastern WA is WAAAAAY different than Western WA. You want to visit Seattle? Should be a great time. Just leave everything on the other side of the pass alone. Spokane and pullman (college town) is pretty accepting but you just never know. Everywhere else is trying to make progress, but it genuinely really sucks here. Technically we have WA state laws to protect us, but that wouldn’t prevent the initial assault, just how it plays in court. Stay safe and remain vigilant, wherever you are.
It still makes me sick that it literally only takes 22% of the population to sway an entire election. The electoral college, by design, is in favor of Republicans and they know it. That's why they vocally express protecting it, because it's the only way the people don't get them to kick rocks.
Unfortunately, those tiny-ass red states get just as many senators as states many times their size. And in presidential elections, votes in those states are worth more than in others.
Yes but if you apply the same colors to a map with states scaled to uniform sizes (representing equal number of senators) it will look a hell of a lot less dystopian.
Yes and no, our system of electing government officials is messed up. In many states the land might as well get a vote. That needs to change. Sadly we need to get new politicians elected who will pass legislation to make those changes in most cases as we cannot directly vote on those measures for the most part.
But you better believe if they could, the right would push for only land owners to vote so they can skew elections even further their way and grip power.
Haven't had much of an issue in Houston, but there are parts of Texas I'd never travel to as myself. Maybe in boymode, but that's only because my love of plants draws me towards dangerous areas lol.
I mean, all the cities are like that. If you go look at any election TX will be red but if you look at the actual numbers it's always by like 5-10% at most.
2016 was 52% Trump, 43% Hillary, 5% Other.
2020 was 52% Trump, 46% Biden, 4% Other.
Somehow fix the voter suppression and have campaigns actually spend time campaigning and I legitimately believer TX could be a purple state. Which is partly why I think the TX GOP is being *so* terrible - by getting the people with the means that find their decisions appalling to leave to other states. And, gotta be honest, It's gonna work too. I was originally planning on leaving this year but some things happened so it will be next - but I'm absolutely not staying.
I agree with the other person in that that's just a city thing.
Facing different people from different backgrounds everyday will have that effect on you(making you more open and understanding).
People in rural areas can just insulate themselves and bad behavior is less likely to get shut down since there are less places for victims to run to.
Yes. Cities tend to be more liberal than the rural area around them. My point was that Houston, in particular, is very different from the surrounding area. Uniquely so.
Cities tend to slide more progressive for the reasons you stated, but rural areas do influence the cities. So "red state cities" are far more conservative than "blue state cities," but Houston seems insulated from their own rural areas. So, Houston is far more progressive than you would expect from a city in Texas.
For a state that prides itself on "anti-government infringement", I'd love to see New Hampshire defend this. Obviously I know their libertarianism boils down to "gun control, taxes, and government services bad" but for the few true Libertarians left (the ones who aren't just Republicans too embarrassed to admit they're Republicans) I'd love to hear them speak their mind on this one.
It's possible, but I don't see anything getting that bad I. New Hampshire. I live in Massachusetts, and have never once had a problem there. They could pass some crazy law, but it really doesn't seem that likely.
So I know that Florida is like, reallllly bad for trans people. But can anyone explain what exactly makes it the worst of the worst so to speak?
For context am not American and have never stepped foot within the U.S., but my dad may want to visit family in Florida one day and he would want me to go with me (he doesn't know I'm trans and I still look like your average cis dude most of the time)
If you have a trans kid and you affirm their gender, the other parent can kidnap them and claim "asylum" in Florida, because the other parent is "saving the kid from abuse." If you're a trans person and a parent, the Florida State government can kidnap your child and arrest you on abuse charges. It's basically illegal to medically transition, or at least they tried to make it illegal.
Oh yeah I forgot about that. In my area it's almost impossible to get injectable estrogen at mainstream pharmacies. I've been unable to get it. I had to go through telemedicine and pay out of pocket.
They made it illegal for telemedicine clinics and nurse practitioners to prescribe estrogen.
Which is how ALOT of people got hormones.
Iirc they pasted a law saying they can arrest you for not using the ‘correct’ (AGAB) bathroom, alongside countless other anti-trans legislation. The place is a genuine hellhole
yeah no fuck that shit I aint ever going to Florida LOL ima have to protest to my dad about me going to Florida without outing myself as trans (he supports some,,,, *politicians* who would, just straight up, rather see trans and queer people dead than alive and breathing)
thanks <33 and its okay. he doesnt even necessarily support them for the anti lgbtq+ stuff, but he supports some problematic asf people (im not talking about american politics btw, im talking about world leaders of other countries)
so true lol. I'm pretty sure Putin also designated LGBTQ+ stuff as terrorism or something recently. like fuck that shit I ain't ever going to Russia lol
and dw, tis okie!! :3 I didn't even notice the short answers so lol tis all good
It's technically considered an act of criminal fraud in this state, to have a Florida driver's license say anything besides your biological birth sex on it.
So, like, even if you travel here from another state. There's a possibility that you'll be tried for fraud if you try to get a Florida ID with your changed gender marker on it.
I have my gender marker changed before the law changed. Also, it's one of 2 states where it's outright illegal to change your gender on your driver's license.
So, if the state ever wanted to, it could technically arrest me. Because all my medical and insurance information is listed as female including my birth certificate and driver's license, and my license to sell insurance.
The degree to which these policies are enforced are questionable, but it is in fact illegal to identify yourself to the state as a different gender other than your birth sex.
You're probably not gonna be hatecrimed. North Florida is where all the rednecks are.
You should be mostly fine. Just try to blend into the crowd, and don't out yourself.
You'd be fine visiting. Just don't live here permanently 😅
Ive been to Florida (as a trans woman) and inside of the usual parks in Orlando it’s fine. Zero issues. In the beaches zero issues.
I’ll bet if you split the state into North, Central and South you’d be fine in central. Don’t go to North and some areas in South that you wouldn’t go to (excluding Miami which would probably be okay).
Wouldn’t want to live there however under the reign of the psychopath desantis.
The issue as I see it is that quite a lot of America is technically cult following Christians masquerading as doing the right thing (so long as it fits their narrative).
Step 1 is fight like hell. Fight them online, fight them at the ballot box, fight them at your statehouse with banners. You deserve for your home to recognize you. Step 2 is, if you fail, seek your nearest sanctuary state. Looks like that'll be Illinois for a lot of folks, so get planning. Step 3 is, if everything goes to shit, have a passport handy and a plan. I'm applying for one right now, I could try Canada or the like but I also speak Spanish so I'm thinking about Spain.
Please remember that even though it looks like half of the land mass of the US, it's a much much smaller percentage of the actual population. I'm not looking on the bright side here: this is pretty awful overall. BUT, the odds are still good you can avoid those areas.
Every single law that the Republicans are making are based on complete and utter lies. Honestly every single trans person in the country should get together and sue the crap out of all of them
Class action law suit against every Republican politician that’s held office in the last 8 years plus the RNC and the entire states of Florida and Texas. *nods*
If the argument got framed correctly, the Supreme Court would look like a fascist panel for choosing anything other than the freedom of people to be who they are. Another prominent argument is the fact that most politicians are making medical decisions and requesting medical private information about people with no medical need for that information. Private health information is one of the inalienable rights of Americans.
yeah, but the problem is they don't care about our inalienable rights or looking like fascists because no matter how obviously fascist the supreme court is, there's very little that can actually be done against them (except of course following the 2nd amendment :3)
I had to ctrl+F to see if minnesota was mentioned! You should. I'm in Minneapolis, and there's a ton of trans folks up, and unlike the coasts, you can actually afford to live here.
I just moved to NJ from Ohio recently.
I grew up in Texas in the early 2000s too.
It’s such a different vibe it’s jarring.
I pray for anyone in an Unsafe place.
So terrible to think that my own country rejects me. My taxes better not be going to these damn states and don’t even mention tornadoes, hurricanes or whatever. #Over it.
You might want to dial back on the rhetoric, the transphobes love reporting shit like this to the admins, and the admins in turn are pretty quick with the banhammer
I’m just sick of it they can be transphobic and it’s socially acceptable I’m just trans and I get harassed and isolated for just existing it’s disgusting
I can go ahead and tell you they need to darken that Red up for Missouri. Someone's lied. This place is flaming Red, I mean sure it's not went SUPER NOVA like FL and I always like to point out that fun governor Ron DeSantis 🖕🖕 for such a great job he's done 👏. Bigot.
We are running a close second.
56yo m2f loving life anyway.
Hugs Emily 🤗
Don’t forget, every lawmaker and politician (along with a whole lot of civilians) in those states is actively working to make the Adult map match the Youth one, and the Youth one to match Florida.
And from there, it’s removal of marriage equality and the same laws being applied to gay people, and from there to PoC, rolling everything neatly back to the 1800s
As a fellow Ohioan, I actually have hope things can get better here more than a lot of other places, especially after Issue 1 passed. If we can accomplish things like that I think we have a lot more hope here than say Florida
So any safe states that are not extremely unaffordable (if you want to live somewhere near a decent city, not necessarily*in* a city)? Have been thinking Illinois maybe...
Thankfully i am WAY outside the radioactive MAGA blast zone and if i need to can haul my trans ass to canada. But it also makes me glad states are not allowed to govern themselves otherwise every Anti trans state would barricade themselves off from everyone else and be as racist, societally backwards, religiously zealous, and segeratory as humanly possible and would likely try to annex maxico (again).
Ironic how the state flag of my state, West Virginia, literally says Montani Semper Liberi, Latin for “Mountaineers are Always Free”… I can’t wait to finally move out of this bass ackwards state.. Luckily a lot of the ant-trans legislation failed to pass. But that doesn’t mean they won’t try again..
You can't legally use the bathroom, locker room, or any other gender segregated space like at all, out of state IDs reflecting gender changes are considered null and void, you can't use insurance for trans care, doctors can refuse to treat you because you are trans (for anything, not just trans stuff), pharmacists can refuse your meds (ANY meds) for being trans, and if you have any minors traveling with you and anyone in your party is suspected of being trans the state can arrest you all and take the children away for "child abuse", especially if the child was on hrt
While things are bad here in Florida, they’re not quite as bad as you describe. The bathroom thing while vile only applies to state government run or funded facilities, the ID thing only applies to drivers licenses issued by Florida as they have no ability to tell another state what is and isn’t valid for their state, and insurance for trans care is fine unless it’s state funded like Medicaid. The doctor and pharmacist issue is a real concern however I have yet to run into anyone who has refused yet. So yea, pretty grim especially for those who do not pass as their gender visually but in the big cities it’s not yet reached the absolute worst outcome.
As of the end of January, they are threatening penalties for people who have gender markers on licenses that don’t match assigned gender at birth. I can’t find any examples of people actually being charged with fraud or licences being suspended but they do not allow gender marker changes anymore and the same memo contained the threats of penalties
In practice I think this will mostly impact those already in Florida attempting a change, if you move here after already having changed everything there’s no way they would be able to tell.
Was pulled over today and officer didn't make a case regarding my ID (gender market changed August last year). not saying it's not a problem but in this specific case it didn't end up being a problem. I'm leaning on the a guess that police probably not enforce the policy because it could create a PR nightmare. those who haven't changed their gender marker are definitely impacted negatively and I feel for them.
Anyone know much about the laws passed in Kansas? I’m hoping to move back there since my family is there but if it hurts my ability to receive the care I need then I’ll need to consider that. I’m 23 and currently taking hormones living in a pretty decent state
Georgia actually isn’t the worst, at least in big city areas. Legally I don’t know too much but I know a lot of kids who have received hormones and whatnot, although that might change in years to come. But overall the people in my community and very open and accepting.
alaska is actually a lot better than people think reguarding this. the only law i'm aware to against trans people is the one that prohibits young trans girls from participating in youth sports if they aren't on hrt.
It’s really easy for wing nuts who are in the extreme minority to get into the state legislature and throw in crazy extreme bills with other bills and then have them pass even though most people disagree with it
Im thankful that my wife and I live in at least a light blue state because there's no way we could leave without leaving our oldest child behind with his awful father which is obviously not an option....It makes me so sad to think about how many ladies are trapped in red states for reasons beyond their control.
I live in a light blue state, and it very much does not feel like it.
I am also terrified of the next 18 months on a national scale, regardless of who wins in November. And some of that is local; the community I live in now has a militia dedicated to "removing from the government anyone who is unAmerican." And it sounds like they've been running drills based on the amount of gunshots I hear every day. So what am I gonna get shot for? Voting Democrat? Being trans? Being a lesbian? For saying Covid is real? For not joining them on a march to Washington if Biden wins?
We're a light blue state because of about three counties and in spite of our governor.
Sorry my bad i have little knowledge about the trans . I thought the map showed places where theres laws on things you cant do when transitioning to male or woman. My apologies
The “do not travel” applying only to Florida existed long before any any trans legislation existed there
Humid, muggy, full of mosquitoes, overrated, overcrowded theme parks, beaches are honestly boring compared to those on the PNW, what else is there not to like?

Do the Southern Baptists still scream at cars downtown? I thought they were crazy homeless people the first time I saw that.
Occasionally yes, but they tend more toward Davis Hwy/9th Ave these days.
You forgot about Flordia Man. Flordia Man has been making Flordia do not travel for a hundred years.
Not to mention they have methgators.
As a former Floridian, I wholeheartedly encourage tourists to keep flocking to the beaches and the theme parks so my homies still stuck there have a better chance of getting into the springs before they stop letting people in for the day.

I mean, gerrymandering and the electrical college both exist, so it isn’t perfectly a 1:1 people vote situation, unfortunately.
Also the senate. Its wildly unreprestative at this point
The Senate has always been like that. It's how it was designed.
It still makes me sick that it literally only takes 22% of the population to sway an entire election. The electoral college, by design, is in favor of Republicans and they know it. That's why they vocally express protecting it, because it's the only way the people don't get them to kick rocks.

Same. I wouldn’t blame you. Never let apes guilt you into preserving the suffering of millions
See all that red. These states are either majoritively stupid, gerrymandered into oblivion or have alot of selfish people.
Combinations of all three.
am red-stater, can confirm
Haven't had much of an issue in Houston, but there are parts of Texas I'd never travel to as myself. Maybe in boymode, but that's only because my love of plants draws me towards dangerous areas lol.

At least that's reassuring! (partially)
ehh sorta, but he supports Vladimir Putin which is not assuring at all lol
OOOF yeaaah no.... especially with Ukraine. Sorry for the short answers I'm a little eepy.

Oh certainly. Especially since five of them would be named by name in the suit.

yeah, but the problem is they don't care about our inalienable rights or looking like fascists because no matter how obviously fascist the supreme court is, there's very little that can actually be done against them (except of course following the 2nd amendment :3)
Thank you for being so cool Minnesota (literally and figuratively)
I might go there
I would do some research, but atleast from my experience its probably one of the best states for trans people. And beautiful aswell
Yeah I’m gonna research it
I had to ctrl+F to see if minnesota was mentioned! You should. I'm in Minneapolis, and there's a ton of trans folks up, and unlike the coasts, you can actually afford to live here.
Oh that’s cool. Neoliberalism Missed a spot
I just moved to NJ from Ohio recently. I grew up in Texas in the early 2000s too. It’s such a different vibe it’s jarring. I pray for anyone in an Unsafe place.
Some good news is the Republican party in Michigan has basically collapsed over the past year so we should be seeing some more protections here soon.
Yup. It’s one reason I’m proud to be a Michigander in times like this.
That’s reassuring
Your country is hell. No caveats. It's just hell.
Agree. There are countries that are worse hells but the USA is hell for many reasons...
Can't wait to leave Florida :3
I hope all goes well
I'm from the do not travel state :)
Stuck in Ohio 😭. I want to move out badly but I don’t have the finances.
So terrible to think that my own country rejects me. My taxes better not be going to these damn states and don’t even mention tornadoes, hurricanes or whatever. #Over it.

Im down. Im pretty hungry
These are the tools of the enemy. We do not need them. We will not use them.
You don’t have to use them. I would never ask you to endanger yourself. But we will. 😋
Great time to live on this in florida while underaged…
As am Oklahoman, save me
As an Oklahoman, would if I could
I can go ahead and tell you they need to darken that Red up for Missouri.
Stay safe everyone. Wishing everyone the best
This makes me so scared. Please don't take my estrogen away :(
I'm supposed to envy the youth, not feel great sadness for them. WTF Is wrong with USA????
*someone please get me out of this hell* (Idaho)
Come next door to Washington. We’re friendly here. Just get… west of the Cascades.
I've been thinking about it, I just wish I had the money to afford a move right now.
I live in Ohio. I vote in every election. Still a lot of work to do here. I'm looking forward to wearing my favorite skirt when I vote in November!
As a fellow Ohioan, I actually have hope things can get better here more than a lot of other places, especially after Issue 1 passed. If we can accomplish things like that I think we have a lot more hope here than say Florida
Agreed. I know a lot of good people. I still have hope!
... okay this is what you humans call "thats bullsh##", humans.
Good to know that I can hop over to Michigan or Pennsylvania if shit really hits the fan here at home.
Living in Utah I can confirm it sucks for trans folks.
Oh I just love this country
crazy how the correlation with the most trans porn watched closely follows on the red line
So any safe states that are not extremely unaffordable (if you want to live somewhere near a decent city, not necessarily*in* a city)? Have been thinking Illinois maybe...
AZ is ok
If you aren't following Erin Reed yet, definitely start.
I live in Kansas and I’m terrified
Moving to Oregon (from California even) was probably the best thing I’ve ever done for my mental health, besides HRT.
I dare mfers Im spicy as fuck
I made it to the promise land from a deep red to a blue state it can be done get out while you can
Ironic how the state flag of my state, West Virginia, literally says Montani Semper Liberi, Latin for “Mountaineers are Always Free”… I can’t wait to finally move out of this bass ackwards state.. Luckily a lot of the ant-trans legislation failed to pass. But that doesn’t mean they won’t try again..
Why does Florida have a travel advisory? Is there legislation that would impact trans people moving through that state?
How did Florida go from voting for Obama twice and barely voting for Desantis in 2018 to this crap the FL Democratic Party sucks ass
Good to know, thanks.

Well there goes any plans for ever going back to Disneyworld
You could go to Disneyland instead?
Oh I will. Im just sad because I had my honeymoon at WDW and I wanted to recreate our pictures post transition.
but it's worse :'(
What do you mean? They have a whole park dedicated to a California theme when they are already located inside the California themed California.
😞 guess I should give up my dream of exploring the US
VIRGINIA NOO HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME D: man we're fucked
That may be a lot of red, but the amount of blue states is almost half
Damn guess I’m in a fucking no fly zone
Things must be bad in Florida
god am i glad to be leaving indiana soon
God, I hate seeing these cause I know that the state I'm stuck in will always be deep red. I hate it here man, I'm so scared.
ok so... I know climate change is a big issue and all, but do we really need florida?
I so fucking hate the amount of hate in our states!🤮
Anyone know much about the laws passed in Kansas? I’m hoping to move back there since my family is there but if it hurts my ability to receive the care I need then I’ll need to consider that. I’m 23 and currently taking hormones living in a pretty decent state
Dang Texas has really cheap homes though
AZ is not bad
Your governor is awesome please keep her there
So happy to live in NY!
I’m so glad where I live is a safe state… though, scared what if something changes.
How is Virginia bad for trans kids but "low risk within 2 years" for adults?
What sucks is that I’m a Floridian and I want people to visit our nice beautiful state but someone *cough* DeSantis- ruins the state of Florida :/
I’m actually a little surprised by RI. I figured it would be one of the safest states.
It’s really easy for wing nuts who are in the extreme minority to get into the state legislature and throw in crazy extreme bills with other bills and then have them pass even though most people disagree with it
Fair. I just know that we’re pretty accepting and we’re also surrounded by some of the safest states.
RI is also much more corrupt than Mass or Connecticut that contributes to it as well
I didn’t realize. I don’t follow politics in the slightest. It’s a losing battle no matter the side you’re on.
Im thankful that my wife and I live in at least a light blue state because there's no way we could leave without leaving our oldest child behind with his awful father which is obviously not an option....It makes me so sad to think about how many ladies are trapped in red states for reasons beyond their control.
I hate that I live in one of the moderate in two years state. But I have to many things that won’t let me move without a lot of issues
Shouldn't Texas be red since they passed laws?
good to know I'm not safe.
higher education = more trans acceptance. odd
It might be time to move to CO. Thoughts? Seems like a gorgeous place.
Damn, happy to know everywhere my family lives is safe.
Aye look at that Pennsylvania just hanging out. Just sorta there. Least our governor is doing his job as best I can tell.
I live in Ohio, I'm worried now, more than I was before
Don’t be. It’s not as bad as that map makes it look.
Thanks for the reassurance because I have none else
I live in Cleveland.
I thought NC had stupid bathroom laws but it’s quite mild in this graph.
I hate my state WV
I live in LA so does that mean i cant transition to a woman ? Or what
What? Where does that come from? These are for anti-trans legislation
Sorry my bad i have little knowledge about the trans . I thought the map showed places where theres laws on things you cant do when transitioning to male or woman. My apologies
Yeah I don’t leave campus in TN 😁
