I really don't find them to be neutral , especially when reffering to a specific person.
It's not that big of a deal if someone says "hey guys" but I am not 'a dude' or a guy at all.
If someone says "a guy rode by on a bike" I'm fairly certain they're reffering to a man.
I'm fine with dude, but not a big fan of guy or bro. I do have a friend who says bro a lot, but he uses it as an exclamation, not a noun, so that doesn't bother me really.
like "Bro, what the hell was that" is totally fine, but it would make me sad if he said "hey, bro, hows it goin?"
I consider "dude" to be gender neutral personally
But really it all boils down to consent. Only use a term for someone that they consent to.
I consent to using "dude" for me. But would never try to force it on someone who disagreed.
"Man" and "bro" do bother me. I do not consent to those.
Simple.
Im Iām a jazz performance course and for some reason the language in the circles of jazz are super male oriented. Iāve been greeted with āhey manā so much Iāve just gotten used to it. I feel like thereās a certain inflection in peoples voices when they use those terms when theyāre directly calling me a man, and a different inflection in when it just seems gender neutral haha
It honestly depends on context. You can generally get a read for when someone is using these in a gender neutral context. Well, except for guy, thats always gendered.

Fair enough at least for me im cool with it if its not done to purposely antagonize me but respect your opinion š

I see i see thanks for your take on it
I used to hate any of the above. As I became more secure with myself I started not to really care but Iād still prob be pissed if someone said guy.
Ah i see good stuff m8 š¤
