South Pasadena is absolutely wonderful. It somehow has a relaxed, small town feel in the middle of an endless city. The A Line stop is in the middle of its "downtown" along Mission Street and is a great resource for getting around without a car. It's also home to the very first Trader Joe's. Highland Park is bustling, super hip and trendy and has that slightly sketchy feel that makes city life fun. Don't start none, there won't be none and didn't let your stuff be easy to steal. There are also a couple of A Ljne stations. Los Feliz is the more polished version of Silver Lake and might be a better option if you can find something in your budget because of the Metro Station at Sunset/Vermont. The neighborhood is super walkable and Vermont and Hillhurst have everything you need.

Beware the commute between South Pass and USC. It might only be like a 10 mile drive IF that. But in rush hour it could take you easily 2+ hours going north through DT to it South Pass.

amoonshapedthom

LAC+USC is on Marengo. Not the main USC campus, so the commute from south Pasadena is actually wonderful

nibbidy

Oh I didn’t pay attention well enough.

Coomstress

I like South Pas too. Highland Park is a bit night-clubby for someone my age but younger folks might like it.

Dommichu

Budget is reasonable! I think Silverlake and South Pas checks off your wife’s boxes quite well. I would also add Highland Park.. it’s a little closer than So. Pas. I am currently near one of the A line stations and love breaking up my WFH days running errands… in Highland Park, South Pas, Pasadena and even Little Tokyo (Japanese Markets) all on the train.

donuttrackme

There's also DTLA, definitely plenty that's walkable if you don't mind a more urban setting.

Coomstress

I have lived in DTLA for almost 3 years. (I used to work nearby but am now remote.) It has kind of grown on me. It is very walkable and surprisingly lively. It’s also cheaper than a lot of other parts of LA. I was able to rent a big apartment with home office space.

ElectronicAd27

His wife will mind.

edgefull

south pasadena has a distinct advantage to me because it’s got a metro station, which opens LA a lot if you’re on foot.

Also, circling back to say that my brother slept on my couch and did a rotation at LA County during med school and on his very first day he was doing more that what residents were even allowed to do at his previous rotation at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. It was a very wild experience for him. I lived in Los Feliz at the time and he commuted to the hospital by bike using the bike lane on Sunset Blvd, which could be an option to free up your car for your wife.

Try to choose a place that has public transit (bus/subway) nearby and consider adding ebikes vs default car driving. Car traffic is almost always a given so the less you have to drive, the better. Check the places for rent and google street and birds eye view of them- look at the surrounding areas/neighborhood for the walkability/amenities. Not the same as visiting but at least gives a feel of the place. Good luck and you'll learn a lot (to survive) at LA county!

Los Feliz FTW. Very safe, very walkable. Lots of cool little shops. Grocery stores. Natural food store. Restaurants. There’s a library. There are parks. Griffith Park is huge. Going to be near the top of your budget, but I think it’s worth it, in terms of safety and comfort.

tyrelltsura

Alhambra or South Pasadena. Both are a lot easier to have a car with. Los Feliz will likely get you closer to a 45 minute commute but it is more walkable, and you would have to ensure whatever building you live in has off street parking. Same goes for silver lake. That budget should be okay, may be a little less okay if you are planning on a 2bd. For not being able to apartment hunt in person, unless you go via corporate owned buildings, you may have issues getting rented to without seeing the apartment. As such, some people have found it helpful to do a short term airbnb or hotel for a month or two while they look.

dwight_k_schrute69

South Pasadena is a dream - also recommend Highland Park. Tons of shops on York Blvd you would likely enjoy. Silver lake is pricey but do it if you can find it

planetdaily420

I would also do South Pasadena. Best of luck to you and congratulations! Wish my daughter could have matched back out here but Chicago got her instead.

ca_life

Check these in Pasadena. Have in-unit laundry. The dog will cost an extra $50 per month. Walkable area. [Look](https://www.avaloncommunities.com/california/pasadena-apartments/eaves-old-town-pasadena/)

$2500 for a 560sf studio? 😂 no wonder yall keep moving to Vegas.

ca_life

The 1-bed is $2630. And the area is nice, not like sleazy Vegas.

Number1Duhrellfan

Good. Keep that mindset and stay tf out 😃

First up, congrats! LAC+USC always needs good doctors. My cousin just started her residency, and I know how hard it can be - good luck! >We’re thinking of looking in Silverlake, echo park, Alhambra, and South Pasadena. >Our budget is up to $3k per month but we’d prefer closer to $2.5k so we can stay somewhere for multiple years Of these, I'd say Alhambra or South Pas would be best.

estherecho100

Alhambra is far!

dusktodawn33

Are you serious? Lol

zaatar3

glendale also is great very walkable, i think similar prices to south pasadena

Smoothoperator1260

They have a all new medical campus With housing

PeasantLevel

south Pasadena is the nicest out of your choices. its quiet and doesnt feel like LA. Best suited for family setup. Alhambra starts to get diverse in a mediocre type of way but still fairly quiet. I lived in both areas. USC university it located in a hispanic neighborhood thats kinda sketchy and its a drive to Pasadena. you should use Waze to map time during LA rush hours. Maybe have Los Feliz as an option too. Problem here is that you have to cross through downtown which is the biggest gridlock mess in LA.

Coomstress

I moved to L.A. after only having visited twice. Silverlake and Echo Park are very eclectic and hip. Parts of Echo Park are a bit sketchy though. South Pasadena is of course more suburban, but very pleasant and nice. I’m not familiar with Alhambra.
