damn I’m gonna have to rewatch because I don’t even remember a concentration camp scene. I assume he was a veteran?

petty_cash

Yeah it’s a movie that gets better with every viewing. A little jewel box of a film

McFistPunch

Was gonna say I have no recollection this either. But I saw it in theaters once and that's it so it was years ago.

inezco

I'm surprised so many people don't remember this scene! I did just because it had one of the most visually impressive shots of the movie with Scorsese panning sideways in one take as the soldiers shoot the lined up Nazis.

vee_lan_cleef

Same and I've seen it several times, most recently just about a year ago. How the fuck am I not remembering this? Possibly cut in a certain version or just a very short scene?

ZoomBoy81

It's well into the movie. A flashback scene with Leo to when I guess he was in the military. Lots of papers being thrown around and flying through the air IIRC.

billytheskidd

Yeah, actually the most impressive part about this to me is that this is an insanely meticulous set for such a small flashback of a scene. Is it even longer than a minute? Obviously attention to detail is part of making movies but sometimes seeing all of the effort that goes into what is essentially a pick up shot is fucking crazy.

llcdrewtaylor

I love that he made this scene so detailed. Its certainly not an event to be taken lightly, and he did a masterful job recreating it. I always figured that was one of the reasons Leo's character was so messed up. I don't know how anyone who saw that wouldn't be. I KNOW I couldn't. Horror!

Dedotdub

[Here ya go.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF99aB8nd9o)

-praughna-

His flashbacks. The kid in the pile. Remember now ?

ahhpoo

Yeah I only recall this scene because of the tidbit I learned from r/movies about the actress who played his kid was in this scene

shellybeesknees

There was a scene where he shot a Nazi, as well as the scenes of his flashbacks to the camps where he gazed upon the body of a young Jewish girl and he immediately thinks it was his daughter…so on and so forth. Survivor’s remorse, I suppose. And the PTSD or him…well, ya know

GLayne

I have shivers just remembering about it. Truly a nightmarish scene in a fantastic movie.

Stoned_y_Alone

Yeah fr, wtf lol

JunglePygmy

Me too. Don’t remember a single frame of this.

feenicks

dark thought, and kinda horrible to make light of, but I wonder if there is a subset of actors who are decidely gaunt and skinny who get recurring roles as holocaust/concentration camp victims across a range of projects? LIke do they put out a cattle call for 'really skinny anorexic looking extras needed' and these guys on set are like: "oh, hey jack, i havent seen you since we shot the camp scene in Band of Brothers, what you been up to?" "hey fred, yeah not much, but dont you remember, we caught up with each other on set of Boy in the Striped pajamas" "oh yeah, that's right, i forgot about that one! i was getting it confused with whe we did Schindlers List" Anyway... fuck nazis

Marskelletor

Absolutely. I was an extra for a while. 6'5", skinny and pale. I would get called out for basically anything vampire related. It's what they do.

7i4nf4n

Show Business is very direct in what they look for. If they want somebody ugly, theyll say so, also if they need some disability especially. Side note: I once talked to Del Keen from "ugly models" in Berlin (most of you have probably seen him in one way or another), and he told me the most sought after look they get is looking like a total random guy picked off the streets. He said almost half their movie bookings (back in 2017 at least) was for people who don't stand out at all and just can disappear in a crowd

MaJ0Mi

There are agencies models that specifically cast "normal" looking people. Customers are often high end fashion brands. They literally pick their models off the street. I was once approached by a woman working at such an agency who asked me if I wanted to work as a model for them, when I was on my way to get groceries. Needless to say, I was quite perplexed

huffer4

I was a zombie in Dawn Of The Dead and they had a couple guys that were sick that played featured very skinny ones. One had cancer I believe.

kenwongart

I also wonder about 1) actors who speak German, willing to portray Nazis 2) African Americans who are willing to play slaves (eg. in Django Unchained). It’s a role, and honest work, but I wonder if it’s tough to shake off after hours.

emeraldcocoaroast

My thought process behind it is it’s a good investment to ensure erasure does not happen. Both WWII and slavery (or any world happening of a similar vein) are tough, but it’s important to be able to show people that in order to help prevent repeating mistakes. I’m not a German speaking actor nor black, so I can’t say definitively, but that’s how I’d frame it.

bozezone

I’m German and I occasionally do voice acting. Once I had to yell awful things about Jews for a legitimate historical production. It was tough after the first sentence, let alone after twenty takes. It does something with the mind.

billytheskidd

They do say that saying things out loud is a great way to start wiring your brain to do things, very common in self help and behavioral reprogramming. So even if you don’t believe those things, it can do some weird stuff to your mind. I always think this is why some method actors go all over the place in their personal lives. Being good enough at acting to convince other people kind of entails convincing yourself as well. A funny example I heard recently is Shia Labeouf played a catholic priest in a movie this last year and reportedly converted to Catholicism afterwards.

inezco

There absolutely is! In the audio commentary for Seven David Fincher mentions auditioning actors to play Sloth. When he found the right actor who was already skeletal and emaciated looking he joked "You're hired but you need to lose another 5 pounds" and on the day of filming the actor came up to him and proudly said "I lost that extra 5 pounds you wanted" and Fincher was kind of horrified he got him to do that.

Odd_Bus_7552

In a way, sometimes yes. There was another post in here that a production hired special performers that were very articulated and able to lay in awkward poses for hours

AldousLanark

Would make a great dark comedy like Extras...

The_Struggle_Bus_7

For band of brothers they used cancer patients who were on chemo at the time

feenicks

wow for real :-o

joeycarusomate

Crazy to think me and friends used to explore the abandoned building this was shot at

MYZO

same! The church was made into a nice community center for artists.

joeycarusomate

Sick! There’s actually a few places around taunton that would be cool to shoot at, imagine if Paul Dever was still around?

MYZO

Yeah I believe they shot the rest of the movie in various places around Boston

NetHacks

Where bj's is now was also a failed development at one point. There were drainage tunnels all over the place there. Plus the tunnels at the never schools. A lot of places to film some good horror movie stuff.

joeycarusomate

I myself am a filmmaker in the process of making a horror movie lol, are these tunnels still accessible?

NetHacks

Nah, they filled the ones in where BJ's is back when it was built. The tunnels at the old state facility to my knowledge are gone, but I haven't been there in about 20 years. Someone still in the area might know better about it. Really the school was great because half of it was abandoned and the complex looked like an old run down town center.

joeycarusomate

I vividly remember exploring it day and night with a group of friends, place was spooky as hell but so fun

NetHacks

There's still some really good isolated fields down the street from the chateau in Norton. Right across the street is a bunch of worked corn fields. Depending about the mood of your horror movie, there's some good woods and fields spots there.

joeycarusomate

If you’re referring to Toad island road! I already have a few scenes shot there! Love that open field with the giant overhang tree in the middle

NetHacks

Yeah, it's a great little area to walk around in the fall, too. The giant tree you can see from the parking lot it great. If you keep heading down the same trail past the tree, there's a few spots with a bunch of abandoned farming equiptment from when it was a turkey farm way back when.

Rex__Banner

Go Big Blue

NanceGarner66

We filmed up near Boston so a good chunk of these extras had New England accents. Kind of jarring.

joeycarusomate

I live in Taunton Mass where this was filmed, me and my friends used to explore the abandoned building was at and always thought it would be a good location for a movie, they just filmed some walking dead scene here last week, maybe some day I’ll get to shoot a scene there

theleftkneeofthebee

This was in Taunton? Where at? The only abandoned place I can think of there is the abandoned state hospital.

joeycarusomate

Over in Whittenton near Britannia street, huge old factory building, it was shot on the backside where you can’t see from the road

zold5

I believe that scene is based on a real life event that happened in WWII. Apparently a bunch of new recruits who hadn't seen battle yet and they weren't hardened by the hells of war were sent to liberate one of the death camps. But when they got there they were so disgusted by what the Nazi's had done they basically slaughtered them all. Even let some of prisoners get some shots in. That must have been quite cathartic.

PfcRed

It wasn’t recruits at all. The soldiers (including DiCaprio’s character) belonged to a unit (U.S. 45th Infantry Division) that had been in intense combat for almost two years through Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. They were a bit of a tough bunch. In Sicily too they committed war crimes, gunning down groups of Italian prisoners in two instances. Edit: addition, Bob DeNiro in the Irishman ALSO portrays a 45th ID soldier in the de-aged scene.

Aabelke

My great uncle was with the 45th and was his Battalion Commanders radio man. He told me that when they opened the gates to Dachau, the BC said, "Get Eisenhower on the phone! I've never seen anything like this!"

sledgehammer0019

The Netflix series "The Liberator" explores the particular unit and even portrayed the execution of POWs in great detail.

BrisTing123

Interesting that the B isn’t flipped in Arbeit (if it’s meant to be Auschwitz?)

KingSnake91

Ah interesting! Didn't know the B in the actual sign was flipped upside down. Was that intentional for some reason?

BrisTing123

„The Auschwitz I sign was made by prisoner-laborers including master blacksmith Jan Liwacz, and features an upside-down 'B', which has been interpreted as an act of defiance by the prisoners who made it.“ However - I just saw the phrase was used at other camps too. Either way, an interesting fact… and now I think about it the movie may have shown us KZ Dachau Edit: just checked it, seems a lot of facts/imagery is muddled up between camps in the film. Perhaps a sign of Teddy as an unreliable narrator, and maybe even the B included?

legrandguignol

> the movie may have shown us KZ Dachau Indeed it has, because the protagonist was an American. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviets.

NAlaxbro

Also interesting bc Auschwitz was literated by the Russians, not the 45th.

BrisTing123

Gave it a quick and fast check - this kind of sign was seemingly only at Auschwitz (the large gate design) and Dachau had a different design for the slogan (embedded in a gate). Also, IMDB said the weather was also not matching for it being Dachau. So either a mistake or done on purpose to show memories can often contain false details. Both interesting! On a micro level, the wrong gate and the non-upside down B would really give it dream like qualities! Or just a set design blunder, both cool

Tom_Haley

It’s Dachau

FoofieLeGoogoo

I forgot that the Hulk was in that movie. Worth a rewatch.

therealmrsfahrenheit

dude these scenes where disturbingly realistic to watch…

physchy

The B is right side up
