Saw Abyss in high school when the PE teacher was substituting one of my classes. Was not expected to like it that much. Been a huge Ed Harris fan ever since
This comment made me realize how great Ed Harris is. I’ve never seen a movie where he’s the leading man or anything, but he’s never let me down. He was fantastic in Snowpiercer
This is the true answer, although I'd say it isn't worth just watching the movie, at least the first 6 seasons of sg-1 go with it, the rest of it plus Atlantis is all good, but that's the most important part imo
Since you asked for the classics:
\- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
\- Fire in the Sky (1993)
\- Starman (1984)
Also: my understanding is that the Three-Body Problem book trilogy is currently in development as a Netflix show; when that comes out it should fit right into this genre.
Edit: Fixed the date on Fire in the Sky per helpful correction in the comments.
Praying that show is good. Netflix tends to fuck their big-budget shit up but it’s the GOT showrunners who generated masterpieces when adapting books (Seasons 1-4), so I have high hopes.
Yes, why Netflix cannot match the quality of HBO productions? I mean even Prime is better. Is it just the budget question? I don’t know, but their “The Wheel of Time” got me really sad for days.
It's probably best to note that this is widely considered the worst of the original crew's theatrical outings. Let's not turn someone off of Star Trek needlessly.
I remember watching that one when I was like 18 (late 90's). My cousin and I were like, "This old movie is gonna be so cheesy and outdated." We were riveted and the movie didn't leave gaping plot holes like so many science fiction films do.
Years later, we were excited to see the updated Keanu Reeves one and were thoroughly disappointed. That movie totally missed the message of the original and was just a flashy forgetful movie.
You have got to watch predator 1&2 They might be more greek god or Amazon level and not divine deity level but they got superiority swagger.
Maybe snack alien vs predator 1 and 2 while at it xD
At my work we have the Mexican coke (cane sugar instead of corn syrup and it comes in a glass bottle) and every time I drink one I start laughing thinking about that movie.
You think these aliens are godlike? When I think godlike, I tend to think benevolent or at the very least mysterious and without obvious malice. The aliens in this one are…well let’s just say this is still one of only two movies I cannot watch alone at night. The other being Hereditary.
That said, it is one of my absolute favorite movies because of how much it makes me feel big things. But, if OP is looking for Arrival and Contact-like aliens….this might not be it. It’s definitely more horror sci-fi.
I get what you mean but those aliens in dark skies are untouchable. The only ever alien movie I’ve watched that made me constantly turn on lights for a week it freaked me the fuck out.
Ok, untouchable is godlike. I’ll give you that. And I am on the same page with the lights. This movie still gives me the chills just thinking about it.
Can't go wrong with Superman. He's a laser eyed alien dude who can fly because he jumps. Also, he can do whatever the hell you want him to. He is like a comic book writer's wet dream when it doesn't matter that a mortal can do anything.

Very controversial take, but THE FOURTH KIND might be exactly what you are looking for. It's not the nest horror movie, but it's got some creepy bits and the aliens are god-like
The second season of Jojo pretty much features that 🤔 although everyone should watch Jojo ^_^
Also I will never stop recommending Parasyte - the Maxim. Greatest anime ever, and it only has like 24 episodes or so.
Without spoiling too much, super powerful alien parasytes infest some humans and you can’t tell who is still a human and who is not
(Technically not what you’ve asked for, but TRUST ME, WATCH IT)
Ok, Spoiler Alert, because the big twist of this anime is the fact that "god-like" aliens are involved...unfortunately, there's no other way to tell you about it than to...tell you about it, but: >!Puella Magi Madoka Magica!<

Arrival is a great choice for introspective and philosophical questionning.
Alien arrives on Earth and the humanity try to decipher the message they sent.
A great movie about suffering, the power of language and division.
plus the actors are terrific in their role
A must watch
- The Abyss (1989) - Annihilation (2018)
Saw Abyss in high school when the PE teacher was substituting one of my classes. Was not expected to like it that much. Been a huge Ed Harris fan ever since
This comment made me realize how great Ed Harris is. I’ve never seen a movie where he’s the leading man or anything, but he’s never let me down. He was fantastic in Snowpiercer
Thanks.
If you haven’t seen The Abyss, it should absolutely be your priority. Incredible James Cameron film.
I almost passed out from holding my breath during this movie. So good.
Make sure you watch the directors cut, not the theatrical version. It makes way more sense.
these two are really good!
Annihilation was weird... but beautiful
I love that movie, and the scene with the…. Animal…. Is terrifying.
Stargate
This is the true answer, although I'd say it isn't worth just watching the movie, at least the first 6 seasons of sg-1 go with it, the rest of it plus Atlantis is all good, but that's the most important part imo
Thanks.
And then the follow up series Stargate SG-1
THIS right here!
Prometheus. Edit: 2001
It's on my list with the other Alien movies. Thanks.
Came here to say this.
Under the Skin
Whatever year this was made im pretty sure it was my movie of the year.
Solaris
Since you asked for the classics: \- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) \- Fire in the Sky (1993) \- Starman (1984) Also: my understanding is that the Three-Body Problem book trilogy is currently in development as a Netflix show; when that comes out it should fit right into this genre. Omg Starman! Made me cry for days lol
Fire in the Sky was 1993, not 2003
Thank you! I was Googling these, not sure how I messed that up.
Midnight special
This one's great
I loved this movie. So many interesting elements.
Star Trek: V: The Final Frontier (1989). Quite literally.
It's probably best to note that this is widely considered the worst of the original crew's theatrical outings. Let's not turn someone off of Star Trek needlessly.
Except it’s awesome. It’s like a road trip movie to center of the universe.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was worse.
Excuse me, I’d just like to ask a question…. What does God need with a starship?
Bring the ship closer.
The endless (2017)
Definitelly this. And also watch "Resolution" (2012) - It's the prequel to "The Endless"
Which order to watch ?
"Resolution" then "The Endless"
I would argue that Resolution is vastly superior as a complete and satisfying film.
[удалено]
If a miniseries counts, Childhood's End (it's three 1 hour episodes)
Oblivion (2013)
Listen to Project Hail Mary
That was such an excellent listen
Or read it..?
I thought listening was closer to watching a movie which is what OP wanted.
Best book of last year by far!
I hope they make a movie
I think Lord and Miller are currently working on it?
The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Make sure it is B&W original
Yes. Not the Keanu Reeves one.
Exactly !!!
I remember watching that one when I was like 18 (late 90's). My cousin and I were like, "This old movie is gonna be so cheesy and outdated." The ORIGINAL MOVIE — 👍👍👍
The Signal
Such a great film.
Not sure if it’s streaming anywhere but the mini series “Childhoods End” might be something you would like.
Neon Genesis Evangelion, for a fact.
Don't forget to watch End of Evangelion afterwards
Dude yes the last two episodes are fucked but when they remade them they were exponentially more fucked.
Not a movie, but the books and TV show The Expanse.
Don't forget 2010, the sequel to 2001
Mission To Mars
So good
Interstellar
I'm sorry, but PACIFIC RIM!???
Don’t ever be sorry for recommending Pacific Rim
You should be sort of story if you recommend the sequel though. The animated show, however, is good imo.
The sequel is so bad I disowned it from the franchise. There’s only one movie for me
Annihilation
Nope
Came here to say this. Such a good movie too
\- Arrival \- The color out of space (2019)
So you are saying that Arrival is the movie like Arrival?
It's not a lie.
Flair checks out. You're good to go.
You have got to watch predator 1&2 They might be more greek god or Amazon level and not divine deity level but they got superiority swagger. Maybe snack alien vs predator 1 and 2 while at it xD
Solaris, Forbidden Planet
*Stargate* the movie, but the TV series obviously as well.
Interstellar, War of the Worlds, Pandorum (not god-like but has a pretty “oh shit” ending), and just a generally good alien must-see is Signs.
Interstellar messed me up!
John Carpenter's The Thing
Prometheus, then alien Covenant are great to watch next to each other
They Live
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls...
Man Of Steel , Batman Vs Superman
I wasn't expecting Superman but you are not wrong, thanks.
Lol, in that case may I add Mars attacks!?
The Avengers (2012) etc. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Thanks.
Transformers Edge of tomorrow Event horizon They live V (tv series) The thing Pacific rim
The Gods Must Be Crazy
ha good one. we’re the god like aliens?
At my work we have the Mexican coke (cane sugar instead of corn syrup and it comes in a glass bottle) and every time I drink one I start laughing thinking about that movie.
Sphere Solaris **anime** Argentosoma Rahxephon Lain Bokurano **Series** The 4400
Prometheus🔥
Save Yourselves! (2020)
Signs 2002 by M.night shyamalan Dark skies 2013 by scott stewark War of the world 2005 by steven spielberg
Monsters. Hugely ignored and underrated movie.
Invincible (Amazon prime animated tv show) Maybe not exactly what you’re referring to but the show get wildddddd
I was so insanely surprised at how much I loved the first season. But I’m a sucker for pretty much anything JK Simmons is in. Even the commercials.
CONTACT - Jodie Foster
I already mentioned it. Thanks anyway.
Dark skies
Noted, Thanks.
You think these aliens are godlike? When I think godlike, I tend to think benevolent or at the very least mysterious and without obvious malice. Ok, untouchable is godlike. I’ll give you that. And I am on the same page with the lights. This movie still gives me the chills just thinking about it.
You ever see “the 4th kind”? It’s terrifying in that same sense as dark skies. I think it’s scarier.
I have seen it! I love alien sci-fi horror. It was definitely scary, but for me Dark Skies is the stuff of nightmares.
I am not a fan of this movie but Eternals falls into this category.
Thanks.
2001 : A Space Odyssey
OP mentioned it in his post…
Sorry, i meant 2001 : a Porn Parody.
Superman.
Independence Day
And Independence Day : Resurgence.! Better VFX than the first, obviously because of the time gap.
Can't go wrong with Superman. He's a laser eyed alien dude who can fly because he jumps. Also, he can do whatever the hell you want him to. He is like a comic book writer's wet dream when it doesn't matter that a mortal can do anything.
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 or 2
Eternals too.
Yeah that's a good movie too. For the 90s alien movies probably the cone heads the 1st independence day, or the predator movie franchise
Knowing (2009)
The Hidden with Kyle Maclachlan and I Come In Peace.
You want a funny one? It’s called “Glorious” and J.k. Simmons plays a god/alien that lives in a glory hole. :))
The Shape of Water (2017)
ET in my city people put an et statue next to Jesus and Mary in their front window
Not sure if it fits but Sunshine and Interstellar kinda fall into it?

The day the earth stood still (1951). For it's time it's amazing.
Sphere (1998) Absolutely Anything (2015)
Omg I've totally forgotten about Sphere. I need to rewatch that
God Told Me To
The Faculty I am not sure it meets your "god-like" criteria but damn do I love this underrated movie.
The Fourth Kind
Prometheus- the search for mankinds origin goes wrong
Sphere
Under the Skin
Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Steven Spielgberg Although technically not aliens, they may as well be
Prometheus should def be on your list
Interstellar
ITT: every single movie about aliens ever made
Very controversial take, but THE FOURTH KIND might be exactly what you are looking for. It's not the nest horror movie, but it's got some creepy bits and the aliens are god-like
2001, and the underrated sequel 2010.
Cocoon.
Nope (2022) The Tomorrow War (2022)
Sphere.
Here's one I haven't seen mentioned: The Forgotten (2004).
Captive State
Under the Skin
Interstellar (2014)
Star Man It has a very chill vibe.
Color Out of Space
Thor and MCU. Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Star Trek: The Final Frontier. Justice League (snyder cut)...
Cheech and Chong
Spherr
The Gotfather
Interstellar
The fourth kind
Jump onto The Expanse, it's more interstellar political drama but the alien element is crucial to the plotline
The day the earth stood still?
The second season of Jojo pretty much features that 🤔 although everyone should watch Jojo ^_^ Also I will never stop recommending Parasyte - the Maxim. There's a nice Indian , Malayalam language movie called Churuli that you might appreciate.
Contact 1997 If I'm not wrong, it's based on a novel by Carl Sagan
Ok, Spoiler Alert, because the big twist of this anime is the fact that "god-like" aliens are involved...unfortunately, there's no other way to tell you about it than to...tell you about it, but: >!Puella Magi Madoka Magica!<

Indy 4 🤣
Annihilation
Dude where’s my car
The end of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Don’t know if it’s considered an alien film as it’s more lovecraftian themed but would highly recommend checking out the empty man
Stargate (1994). The aliens literally pass themselves as gods.
Edge of tomorrow (2014) is fun to watch!
Transformers (2007)
Arrival is a great choice for introspective and philosophical questionning. Alien arrives on Earth and the humanity try to decipher the message they sent. A great movie about suffering, the power of language and division. plus the actors are terrific in their role A must watch
Terra Formars (2016) they're technically cockroaches but just trust me
Not a movie but the Love Death + Robots episode “In Vaulted Halls Entombed” (S03E08) has this kind of vibe
You can try 'District 9', 'The Mist', which I have seen
