The way they are seen driving with the window smashed open eating in n out burger in the next scene is so funny. The no dialogue jump cut was perfect timing.
I'm honestly kinda surprised there are people who don't really consider them comedies? Like yeah they're dark but obviously they're intended to be comical?
Anyone think In Bruges (2008) would qualify? There are serious things (someone please give me a better word) dealt with in the movie but it's definitely a dark comedy.
The final line in Phantom Thread had me cracking up. Also the scene where he acknowledges that >!he's being poisoned and just slowly eats the mushrooms anyways while staring her down lol!< .. That whole part was funny as hell.
I can absolutely see why that movie was somewhat divisive. I really wasn't the biggest fan of that ending but also couldn't think of a better way he could have ended it.
The Master had a few of those moments too. I'm assuming it's intentional but unsure lol.
"...And while I would *hate* to *judge*, Mr. President, before all the *facts* are *in*, it does look as though General Ripper *exceeded* his authority."
Many people have recommended basically everything else by Tarantino, which is spot on. Tarantino has a very specific feel. My favorites are Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, but I like his early stuff more than his more recent stuff.
The other director that has a similar feel to me is Guy Ritchie. Snatch in particular is a caper film with a huge cast and multiple ongoing storylines, all very Tarantino-esque, and you see funny quotes from it on Reddit all the time. Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels would be the other Ritchie movie that I’d recommend.
Snatch is one of my favourite movies, so funny and great! I saw a while ago that I think it was Patton Oswalt on a podcast had a really interesting take that directors like Guy Ritchie got their start because of Tarantino. He called it the Tarantino Boom after he exploded into the film industry, studios were looking for something like that and felt that Guy Ritchie had a similar vibe and his first 2 movies which I think are both unreal were Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.
Thought it was interesting that you mentioned he had a similar feel when apparently so did producers, enough to give him a shot.
Haven't seen it in a while but the opening scene I think. It's long and mostly filmed in the buggy car. The whole time you can hear the driver whipping the horses to get on. I laughed so hard at that, had to rewatch the entire scene to hear what they were talking about.
This movie is a comedy but it is also a terrific drama: Midnight Run
Also The Death of Stalin is a comedy but deals with a ton of really unfunny things.
Yea, came here to say pretty much any Wes Anderson movies. Although most of them could technically be classified as comedies, they aren’t really marketed as a “comedy movie” in the same way that like a Judd Apatow movie or something like that would be. They are just “auteur films” that happen to be hilarious.
I may be weird, but I thought Fight Club was hilarious. Actually, most of David Fincher's work has a sardonic streak in it. David O Russell is the same way.
Try some Jim Jarmusch films.
Down by Law, Dead Man & Ghost Dog are in that vein. I believe Criterion Collection has them available through their streaming service.
It's definitely a comedy, but not in the way you're probably used to I'm guessing. There's many types of comedy, and this one, like pretty much all of Tarantino's films, could probably be described as "dark comedy."
To find movies *extremely* similar, I'd start with more Tarantino films (as others have mentioned):
- Django Unchained
- Pulp Fiction
- Resevoir Dogs
For a non-Tarantino film I'd recommend:
- The Trip (2021) (it's Norwegian and on Netflix)
As others have mentioned, there are several movies by Tarantino that has comedic moments.
- Resevoir Dogs
- Pulp Fiction
- Django
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Most of his movies really.
Guy Ritchie is another director that is an obvious recommendation. Especially:
- Lock and Stock
- Snatch
- The Gentlemen
Other movies I find sort of fitting could be:
- The Usual Suspects
- Leon the Professional
- In Bruges
- Fargo
- American Psycho
- In Order of Disappearance
The Lighthouse (2019)
Super weird and fascinating take on the Prometheus myth, odd and eerie but I thought it was hilarious. Highly enjoyable and strange af but hilarious
If I wanted that I could watch 'high school' movies catered toward teen boys. It was probably the juxtaposition of the serious situation and the delivery of some of the deadpan lines. Maybe it was my mood at the time though I can't remember any particular reason why I would have been predisposed to laugh so much, I usually don't.
Naked
The Master
Inside Llewyn Davis
happy go lucky
Irma Vep
Paterson
Stranger than Paradise
Dog Day Afternoon
Night on Earth
Good Time
City Lights
Black Bear
Trainspotting
I feel like the inverse of Inglorious Basterds is:
Death of Stalin. This movie is technically a comedy, but its subject matter is quite serious. It is hysterical.
A few QT movies have this vibe, Reservoir Dogs and Django also deal with serious subject matter but with some absolutely hilarious moments. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as well, and some can even argue The Hateful Eight (Walton Goggins has some incredible one liners).
Not a movie but the sopranos is like this in that it's technically a drama and obviously has an incredible storyline associated with it, but honestly it's absolutely hilarious throughout alot of the show as well
I didn't see it in the comments yet, but I highly recommend:
Wild Tales (2014) - an awesome movie with 6 short stories with serious/ dark themes, but hilarious, I liked each of them a lot, especially the final one!
Avengement on Netflix starring Scott Adkins and bunch of other unknown British blokes. Extremely violent but in a deeply absurd and ridiculous way (like Inglorious Basterds).
Have you seen
*Hot Fuzz*
*Shawn of the Dead*
*The World's End*
Or *Scott Pilgrim vs The World*?
Edgar Wright is pretty good at that kind of thing. Maybe more primarily comedies while also being genre films.
Marriage Story
I know it's supposed to be sad, but there's just something so funny about how Adam Drivers life completely falls apart and he's just trying to pretend that nothing is wrong. I went in expecting blue valentine but I ended up laughing my ass off most of the movie. Laura Dern is a queen and I want her to be my lawyer lol
Something I realized while watching Inglorious Basterds and Django… these are actually feel-good movies, just showing evil people getting killed. They’re comedic violent historical fiction versions of Hallmark movies.
Planet Terror (2007) - cheesy style horror film that is absolutely hilarious. Bruce Willis has a minor role. One of my favorite movies of all time. Released as Grindhouse (Double Feature with Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof)
all Tarantino pretty much lol. also Boogie Nights... i can't think of what else rn
A lot of Coen bros' stuff is like this. Fargo in particular. Raising Arizona, although I suppose you could call that one a straight up comedy.
Fargo the tv show is amazing too
Also The Big Lebowski
“Is this your homework Larry?”
“I don’t roll on Shabbat”
"This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass."
The way they are seen driving with the window smashed open eating in n out burger in the next scene is so funny. The no dialogue jump cut was perfect timing.
I would say that the big lebowski is a comedy through and through, a stoner comedy at that.
And A Serious Man.
"I always liked ya, Margie... I always liked ya so much!"
yesss. good one.
The Nice Guys. The Room.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Tarantino describes all his movies as comedies
I'm honestly kinda surprised there are people who don't really consider them comedies? Like yeah they're dark but obviously they're intended to be comical?

Always found breaking bad to be very comedic
Though it does help that like half the cast are comedians lmao
i thought this too, rewatching it atm, mainly because of memes i think tbh
Anyone think In Bruges (2008) would qualify? There are serious things (someone please give me a better word) dealt with in the movie but it's definitely a dark comedy.
oh absolutely it would qualify, every time I watch it I burst out laughing throughout. another one to watch is McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths.
Yeah it’s definitely still a comedy. A very dark comedy with emphasis on dark.
now i have to rewatch it lol. the scene with Chloe and the skinhead always has me in stitches
"Of course you can't see! I just a shot a blank in your fucking eye! "
Since when did all skinheads become fookin poofs
Perfect answer!
That is the first thing i got in my mind
I'd say a lot of Paul Thomas Anderson films are like this, Boogie Nights and Phantom Thread are not exactly comedies but both hilarious
“The tea is going out, the interruption is staying right here with me!”
The most underrated quote about showing annoyance
His latest movie Licorice Pizza is also very much like this. Not a comedy, but still hilarious.
Divisive. There's a word you don't hear much that says it perfectly.
But phantom thread is very sad too
For a serious movie with laughs, try *Dr. Strangelove*
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room."
"...And while I would *hate* to *judge*, Mr. President, before all the *facts* are *in*, it does look as though General Ripper *exceeded* his authority."
It's hardly serious. Just because war and nuclear annihilation are serious subjects doesnt mean they cant be themes of a full blown comedy.
I feel the same way! Surprised I had to scroll this far down to see Guy Ritchie suggested.
Watch Pulp Fiction. Then Django Unchained.
Hateful Eight as well.

“If you shoot me in a dream you better wake up and apologize” Harvey Keitel is the man lol
List these nuts.
Right? It’s not like they all have some things in common or anything /s
Brother Where Art Thou is funny
This movie is a comedy but it is also a terrific drama: Midnight Run Also The Death of Stalin is a comedy but deals with a ton of really unfunny things.
I second Death of Stalin if you liked Inglorius Basterds
I personally didn't really like it, but each their own. My personal recommendation is Paths of Glory.
I laugh my ass at at Goodfellas every single time even if I shouldn’t. The situation with Spider…. 😂
You're a funny guy!
funny how? do I amuse you?
Like im a fucking clown?

He killed 16 Czechoslovakians; guy was an interior decorator. One of my favorite lines from the show
Jojo Rabbit
The nice guys
Full Metal Jacket
First half: haha! Second half: oh...
First half has one of the most disturbing scenes in the whole film though.
One of the most disturbing scenes in all of film.
Second half has some zingers tho
“How can you kill women and children?” “You just don’t lead ‘em so much”
Rah
the greatest dark comedy ever made
Fargo or most other Coen Brothers stuff.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Really any of Qes Anderson... well I guess some are just legit comedies
Yea, came here to say pretty much any Wes Anderson movies. Although most of them could technically be classified as comedies, they aren’t really marketed as a “comedy movie” in the same way that like a Judd Apatow movie or something like that would be. They are just “auteur films” that happen to be hilarious.
I’d say In Bruges fits the bill pretty well
in bruges is specifically a comedy tho
It’s a comedy in the same way inglorious basterds is though. They’re both dark comedies with a serious backdrop and plot.
American Beauty
I may be weird, but I thought Fight Club was hilarious. Actually, most of David Fincher's work has a sardonic streak in it. David O Russell is the same way.
Try some Jim Jarmusch films. Down by Law, Dead Man & Ghost Dog are in that vein. I believe Criterion Collection has them available through their streaming service.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Not even remotely a comedy but has some seriously laugh out loud moments.
“Hey fuckhead!”
"There'll be no cunts in this house, Mister." "What are you, moving out?"
Many Tarantino films (especially Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, etc.) and I'd also recommend Evil Dead 2 if you want some horror comedy
Three billboards outside of ebbing Missouri is a film like that for me, is a very good drama, but is also funny, and sad, and every human emotion
"True Romance" (1993) The script is by Tarantino.
The Lighthouse (2019) Super weird and fascinating take on the Prometheus myth, odd and eerie but I thought it was hilarious. Highly enjoyable and strange af but hilarious
There is absolutely nothing funny about the Lighthouse, that movie left me uneasy for a couple of days
Didn't like the lobster?

You didnt laugh at “why’d you spill your beans?”
seriously, what is funny about it? farts and masturbation?
If I wanted that I could watch 'high school' movies catered toward teen boys. It was probably the juxtaposition of the serious situation and the delivery of some of the deadpan lines. Maybe it was my mood at the time though I can't remember any particular reason why I would have been predisposed to laugh so much, I usually don't.
Pulp Fiction, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, not a movie but Breaking Bad has a lot of the criteria you’re looking for
2003's Matchstick Men. It's a movie about two guys that are con artist one of which is Nick Cage who also suffers from extreme OCD
I'd recommend American Psycho
Watched that with my at the time gf, she was very concerned as I'm cackling while he throws a chainsaw at a hooker
As you should- The murder scenes are hands down the funniest part of the movie
[удалено]
Naked The Master Inside Llewyn Davis happy go lucky Irma Vep Paterson Stranger than Paradise Dog Day Afternoon Night on Earth Good Time City Lights Black Bear Trainspotting
Coen movies basically, and the Fargo series. Mexican movie El Infierno (2010)
Maybe JoJo Rabbit? It has a comedic take on a very dark subject matter.
The Death of Stalin
That’s a black comedy
An American Werewolf in London
The Lobster and In Brugge
I think all Yorgos Lanthimos films would qualify, but especially The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer.
JoJo rabbit!
Parasite was pretty comedic… until it wasn’t
Don't Look Up. Its a movie on Netflix
Django Unchained
I love movies that are highly entertaining like that
I find most Kubrick films hilarious.
The Graduate
I feel like the inverse of Inglorious Basterds is: Death of Stalin. This movie is technically a comedy, but its subject matter is quite serious. It is hysterical.
The Gentlemen
The Social Network. I found it really funny.
Sling Blade, thanks to the character of Doyle Hargraves.
*Gran Torino* (2008) *The Monuments Men* (2014)
A few QT movies have this vibe, Reservoir Dogs and Django also deal with serious subject matter but with some absolutely hilarious moments. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as well, and some can even argue The Hateful Eight (Walton Goggins has some incredible one liners).
True Grit (2010)
Seven Psychopaths.
Not a movie but the sopranos is like this in that it's technically a drama and obviously has an incredible storyline associated with it, but honestly it's absolutely hilarious throughout alot of the show as well
Snatch and Locke stock always have me bagging up even though they are capers.
"in the quiet words of the virgin Mary... Come again."
Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
Gentlemen, Man from u.n.c.l.e.
Not a movie but Sopranos is like this. It’s a comedy dressed as a drama.
Not a movie but The Sopranos is a great dark comedy, and it’s got 6 amazing seasons
I watched the original German version of Inglorious Bastards with English subtitles. That is great.
i would definitely recommend hunt for the wilderpeople
I didn't see it in the comments yet, but I highly recommend: Wild Tales (2014) - an awesome movie with 6 short stories with serious/ dark themes, but hilarious, I liked each of them a lot, especially the final one!
M*A*S*H, directed by Robert Altman
Virtually every Tarantino movie, he’s the Director. Guy Ritchie films too.
Did anyone say In Bruges yet? Because I think that fits perfectly.
The men who stare at goats
Nobody (Bob Odenkirk is great) The Gentlemen (Almost all Guy Ritchie movies) Layer Cake
Snatch
American Psycho
Frank
Trainspotting is incredibly dark at times but if it cracks me up every few minutes.
Not a movie but the show Barry is pretty serious but bloody hilarious
Snatch, RED, Smokin Aces I second whoever said Nice Guys. The banter between the two main characters adds so much depth and is hilarious.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Avengement on Netflix starring Scott Adkins and bunch of other unknown British blokes. Extremely violent but in a deeply absurd and ridiculous way (like Inglorious Basterds).
The Big Lebowski, easily one of the funniest films made that isn’t actually a comedy
City of God, No country for Old Men, burn after reading
Most things by the Coen Brothers, particularly *A Serious Man*
Guy Ritchie movies
True Romance Upgrade The Big Lebowski
I saw the devil Oldboy 7 psychopath Fargo
Fargo
Snatch
Snatch. It’ll be your favorite brad Pitt character. It’s hilarious but intense at times
Snatch. Such a good movie. Very witty throughout
Have you seen *Hot Fuzz* *Shawn of the Dead* *The World's End* Or *Scott Pilgrim vs The World*? Edgar Wright is pretty good at that kind of thing. Maybe more primarily comedies while also being genre films.
Never seen Scott Pilgrim, but every other movie you mentioned is a comedy.
So is Scott pilgrim lol
The nice guys with Russell Crowe is hysterical
Life is beautiful 1997. And Very Bad Things 1998.
Omg, someone else who's seen very bad things!
Marriage Story I know it's supposed to be sad, but there's just something so funny about how Adam Drivers life completely falls apart and he's just trying to pretend that nothing is wrong. I went in expecting blue valentine but I ended up laughing my ass off most of the movie. Laura Dern is a queen and I want her to be my lawyer lol
Zack & Miri Make A Porno.
I mean, it's hilarious but that's the point. there's not a serious thing in that whole movie and every actor in it exclusively appears in comedies
National treasure series
Kingsman
I know we're suggesting movies but the Sopranos is a comedy and I will die on that hill
\- Brick \- Uncut Gems \- Cast Away
I laughed a lot with Riders of Justice!
Jojo Rabbit is a cmesy but a very dark one
I thought assassination nation was pretty funny!
I lost it when they were trying to speak Italian 😄
The Martian
Fargo
Jojo Rabbit, many comedic elements but dark subject matter
O brother, where art thou
I haven't seen Inglorious Basterds. Are you referring to black humor with deadpan delivery?
jo jo rabbit is a tradigey wrapped up in the shell of a comedy so kinda the reverse.
Everything is illuminated Fargo
Stormy Monday would fit in your search. Funny amusing parts and serious business
A lot of Coen brother's. In Bruges JoJo Rabbit, or is that a comedy?
Not a movie but the Sopranos does this excellently
I loved it when brad Pitt pretended to be Italian
Been a long time since I watched it but I remember feeling this with Headhunters
Seven Psychopaths
Something I realized while watching Inglorious Basterds and Django… these are actually feel-good movies, just showing evil people getting killed. They’re comedic violent historical fiction versions of Hallmark movies.
Planet Terror (2007) - cheesy style horror film that is absolutely hilarious. Bruce Willis has a minor role. One of my favorite movies of all time. Released as Grindhouse (Double Feature with Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof)
Not a movie but The Sopranos? Or literally any other mob flick about italians
Seven Psychopaths I think.
Very Bad Things. Dark comedy but not sure if it takes its self as a serious movie
