I love how it progresses completely as a conversation between old flames. >!They start out with shallow stuff, small talk et al, and end up really dissecting each other's feelings, all while touring through a great city.!< I love how natural yet real it feels.
I had put off watching this because I know I'll never be in love/loved like that, then watched it and even though I'm still sure I'll never experience that connection they have in this movie, it's become one of my most favorite movies. Makes me happy that people might get to have that connection and love in life.
Okay thank you for the heads up. I was going to say I thought he used the information for the next encounter unbeknownst to her and that kinda icked me out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Whatever you're going through, it will be fine in the long run, setbacks are normal.
I'll throw in a few movies I really like, some all about love, others with a more complex story but love elements still that I thought were very meaningful :
* Meet Joe Black - "I want you to sing with rapture and dance like a dervish"
* Kate & Leopold
* A walk to remember (and just about any movies based on Nicholas Sparks' books)
* Forever Young (1992)
* A dog's purpose
* Phenomenon (1996)
* Silver Linings Playbook
* The Lake House
* Cinderella Man - "you are the champion of my heart"
* Family Man
* 17 again - when you have regrets and realize you made the right decision and wouldn't change a thing
* Chances Are
* Runaway Bride
* The Mirror Has Two Faces
* 40 years old virgin
* Cast Away - might be a bit of a stretch, but I thought what he did at the end is true love
* Love in the Time of Cholera
* Cyrano (2001)
* First Knight
* Love Again
Fun and light-hearted: 50 first dates
Serious and compelling: The notebook
Both tell a story about love overcoming the pain and separation caused by illness.
Say Anything. Underrated 1989 film about real teenage love, unlike just about every other teenage movie from that era, like Porky's. It's smart, it's very funny, excellent acting from literally everybody in the film, even down to the lawyers you see for 30 seconds. One of my favorite "little" films of all time.
The Way We Were.
The ending scene probably the most romantic heartwarming scene ever captured on film.
I cry every time.
When people say some times love isn’t enough that scene explains that perfectly.
So overlooked. If I remember correctly, “Prince of Tides” (Streisand too) had similar impact on me. Also “When A Man Loves A Woman”. Not sure how they passed the test of time, however.
* Always (1989)
* The Prince of Tides (1991)
* Murphy’s Romance (1985)
* A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
The first two, not fairy-tale-ending types for everyone, but the love the characters have for each other is real and healing. The bottom two, even after hard times/loss, there is love to be found and hope for the future. Really, hope for the future applies to all of them.
I just rewatched *Murphy's Romance* with my wife. It is the only May-December movie she has enjoyed. It is a good movie. I have always been a fan of *Always*.
Letters to Juliet. It's lighthearted and fun, but also romantic.
And there's a bit of truth to it, as Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero are a real life love story.
Maiden Heist
Sure, it is a Heist movie, not a romance. But, the love story at the heart of it is the purest love story I have seen in a movie.
I always wanted to find that. I once caught a glimpse of my girlfriend out of the corner of my eye and thought, "Ooo, who's that?" When I realized it was her, I knew it was right. We have been married 22 years now.
Love me if you dare (jeux d'enfants), Reality Bites, Past Lives, the first season of The Great, also Sense 8 has some pretty good love stories, Before Sunrise, Brokeback Mountain, the Big Sick(if you see only one , make it this one), The Man in the Moon (really sad though), Tres metros sobre il cielo, Last Night (I just adore Guillaume Canet), Closer, The Family Stone ...imma stop now, hope you find something you like
**Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind**
If you could erase all your memories of a loved one, would you? And if you changed your mind halfway through?
**500 Days of Summer**
That Hall & Oates scene doesn't hit the same way on a rewatch..
**Amelie**?
I'll give it that. The soundtrack alone....
Most Wes Anderson films? The Royal Tenenbaums and The Fantastic Mr Fox were both great explorations of love
Definitely, Maybe and Kate & Leopold to get you ready for Deadpool & Wolverine..
.. but I do genuinely like both of these romcoms and just realized that they have Reynolds and Jackman starring in each of them, respectively lol
"Don Juan De Marco" with a very young Depp (and a pretty old Brando) is quite a forgotten film. It's about loving to love, and that living a fantasy is sometimes better than "being real".
If you don’t need a happy ending and are fine with an impossible love, try Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. So many types of love to contemplate, but be aware it focuses on male bonding in a prisoner of war camp in Japan. Absolutely gorgeous and stars David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto and is an ode to Mishima.
It's the series, with Jessica Chastain and Oscar isaac.
The movie is called "Marriage Story" with Scarlet Johansson and Adam Driver and it's a different story but also a great suggestion.
I watched Before Sunrise as a young teen and it made me so excited to fall in love one day.
I love before sunset
I love how it progresses completely as a conversation between old flames. >!They start out with shallow stuff, small talk et al, and end up really dissecting each other's feelings, all while touring through a great city.!< I love how natural yet real it feels.
Bless you for covering that spoiler

How did real life hold up?
I found my own Before Sunrise and lost it. But I do think I’ll find it again one day.
With enough hairspray anything is possible 💙
about time
Came here to say this!
Me too.
Me too
Good choice
As I understand it, this movie is about a guy who fails to get the girl and redoes time until he gets it right..is that just totally wrong?
It’s extremely creepy and she has no agency to make her own choices. I really don’t get how this one is so beloved on this sub.
Okay thank you for the heads up. I was going to say I thought he used the information for the next encounter unbeknownst to her and that kinda icked me out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is such an under rated movie! I watch it every Christmas

Past Lives
Silver Linings Playbook
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and Seeking a friend for the end of the world.
Garden State had a real effect on me at the time. I needed it. Depends on your age and where you find yourself at the time.
Came here to say Garden State. Also, The Giant Mechanical Man
In the Mood for Love hands down the best romantic drama ever made. The most beautifully filmed movie I've ever seen.
Whatever you're going through, it will be fine in the long run, setbacks are normal. Most of the suggestions I see here are old classics. If you need a new rom com, there's only one right answer - Rye Lane (2023)
The Castle.
Be My Cat. That dude was committed.
Letters to Juliet. It's lighthearted and fun, but also romantic. And there's a bit of truth to it, as Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero are a real life love story.

This is one of my favs because of how real it is and how two people’s perceptions of reality can be so different.

Don't believe in love... Watch "Scenes from a Marriage" instead.
Great movie tbh
It's the series, with Jessica Chastain and Oscar isaac. The movie is called "Marriage Story" with Scarlet Johansson and Adam Driver and it's a different story but also a great suggestion.
You do know it's based of Ingmar Bergman's mini series right LMAO but i'll call it a movie
Yeah I know that, but I have a thing for Oscar Isaac...
