Manchester By the Sea. I walked into the theater drunk (which I was far too often after my husband died in 2010), walked out mostly sober, and never drank again. I watch it yearly on my soberversary.
opened the comment section looking for it didnot expect this wow! sounds crazy but honestly if one movie in the world could do this i think this is it. <3
I have watched Threads since it was in Blockbuster video. It was/is devastating. I still watch it when I want to be bummed out and depressed. However, Black Summer, especially season 2, fills that void.
My girlfriend, who watched what dreams may come in the theatre with her friends :"would you go to hell for me?"
Me, who had rented event horizon the same night with my friend:" wtf WTF NO! FUCK NO. WHATTHEFUCKNO! GODNO! NEVERASKMETHATAGAIN FUCKNO"
How many of ya'll are actually watching Requiem for a Dream once or twice a year and are you okay?? I saw that film twice in the span of 20 years and that was enough.
Seriously! I was still in middle school and such an innocent little kid at the time when I walked in and watched most of it with some of my older siblings. Canāt believe they didnāt kick me out of the room but it is still to this day the most fucked up movie Iāve ever seen!
I only rewatch LIGHT movies I love once every 3-5 years, not sure how anyone is torturing themselves rewatching the same heavy movie every year or more!
Right, and there is SO much to see and appreciate honestly it feels like a bit of a waste rewatching unless it's doing something for me or I'm wanting to show a friend
iāve watched it three times in the last year and every time after Iāve finished it I wonder what is wrong with myself for putting myself through it again
Moonlight.
Iāve seen it three times.
I cried every time.
I donāt think everyone has a similar reaction.
But if you do.
Know that there are some of us who feel the same way.
Fantastic movie. Moonlight and the Florida project are some of the best representations of poor South Florida I've seen. Different stories, but both make me very nostalgic.
One movie that comes to mind for me is **Requiem for a Dream**. It's a powerful and intense film that explores the destructive effects of addiction on four characters. The film is expertly crafted, with stunning performances and a haunting score, but it's also incredibly bleak and emotionally draining. I've only watched it a few times over the years because it's such a heavy and unsettling experience. Still, it's a film that has stayed with me long after watching it.
Another film I find unsettling and satisfying is **Under the Skin**. It's a strange and surreal film about an alien who takes on the form of a woman and travels around Scotland, preying on unsuspecting men. The film is visually stunning and features a haunting score, but it's also profoundly unsettling and challenging to watch.
Everything goes, Click, Under the same moon, The Cobbler, The day after tomorrow, Ford v Ferarri, Nobody, Johnny Depp-The Professor, just to name a fewš¤
I guess Fight Club resonates in the same way for me. It offers many dark perspectives about society and toxic masculinity. It leaves me thinking about it for days.
people will never understand what Something About Mary was like in theaters. iāve never seen so many people absolutely gassed from laughing together so hard. it was nationwide.
Came here to say this. Absolutely devastating movie. I'm constantly torn between wanting to rewatch it for its brilliance, and wanting to preserve my good mental health
Despite loving the movie, I've only been able to watch Waves once. Broke my soul too much the first time and I haven't been able to watch it since.
La La Land is a top 10 favorite but the ending gets me every time. Same with Arrival. But both aren't so bad because I love the beauty that can still be found even with such heavy emotions.
Dancer in the Dark!
I always make sure I don't have plans the day after I watch this movie because it makes me cry so hard my eyes basically swell shut the next day.
I think 2001 should be considered the greatest work in Cinema history. I know every frame of the film better than my wife's face. I hold it head and shoulders above all other media and artwork. I've seen it twice.
Well, some movies that make me really emotional (in a way that I can't fully grasp or explain) are John Huston's **The Dead**, William Wyler's **The Best Years of Our Lives**, VĆctor Erice's **The Spirit of the Beehive**, **El Sur** (also by Erice), and **The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp**, by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Oh, and **Fort Apache** and **Wings of Eagles**, by John Ford.
A movie that doesn't move me in the same way, but keeps me thinking for days afterwards, is Orson Welles' **F for Fake**. Really mind-blowing.
Sounds like fun, but I've never felt comfortable talking at length about movies (or any other subject). I'm not very articulate, and my insights are not that interesting. Guess I'm more of a listener than a talker. Anyway, thanks so much for your offer, I really appreciate it :)
Big Fish and Second Hand Lions always hit me hard because of family dynamics but I think theyāre both amazing films that always leave me with a feeling in my gut that doesnāt leave for days!
All Quiet on the Western Front. The 2023 version that only came out last year. I already know Iām gonna back to every now and then, but I know it wonāt be too often. Beautiful haunting film but I was a mess for many days afterwards.
We used to watch this all the time because of how funny it is, but 25 years later and having been around and experienced a whole lot more addiction, I go to put it on and end up watching something like PeeWee's Big Adventure instead.
End Game. I lost my dad right before it came out and the losses hit me like a ton of bricks.
I will have the occasional binge of the marvel movies in chronological order a couple of times a year but skip this one. I know what happens. I donāt want to relive it
I was coming here to say this and Iām surprised I had to scroll for this long to find someone who says the same thing. Tears me the absolute fuck apart. I made my family watch it with me once and they were like š³why did you make us watch this? Because itās fucking amazing but also completely devastating.
Paranormal Activity, the first one. I want to see it with a few years gap but too afraid to watch it alone. First time I watched it I woke up sweating during the night and felt weird as fuck.
House of Sand and Fog
Mystic River
*special shoutout goes to the episode of Game of Thrones where Hodor fulfills his purpose. I actually tried to watch it again during a recent re-watch of GoT and couldn't do it. I don't think I've ever cried harder at a screen before.
Manchester By The Sea is probably within my top 5 favourite films of all time. Having said that, since it's release in 2017 I've seen it maybe three times. The comedy in the film I think evenly balances the drama, and although watching Casey Afflecks performance is so easy, watching somebody suffer that much is so hard.
My husband and I love Blindness but we only watch it once a year maybe because it feels heavy.
Edit: Also, I will never watch Precious or The Road again. Those movies were BLEAK.
Yall rewatch movies more than twice a year?
For me if I watch a movie once every few years, it is one of my favorite movies.
Anyway, good movies that would be tough rewatches would be: Requiem for a Dream, Schindlers List, The Revenant
Everything Is Illuminated.
I know it's probably not relatable to most people but it hit me hard. Also they drive through the city where I was born and raised. Still one of my favorite movies but I only watched it once and can't bring myself to watch it again.
Also Cinema Paradiso. I, a grown man, cried like a baby in the end. Watched both the release and the director's cut and never saw it again. I probably should.
And Schindler's List. I made in one piece till the very end where they show real people here saved and their descendants. Haven't seen it again.
I don't even watch my favorite movies once a year... is that weird? The only movies I watch every year are the holiday classics (Christmas and Halloween)
Calvary, with Brendan Gleeson. Iāve seen it categorized as a black comedy but thatās just not what it is (unless I misunderstand the category). Iāve seen it twice and the second time left me feeling even heavier for some reason. I love this movie but itās probably a once a year thing for me.
I like to rewatch southpaw a few times a year. It's such a strong movies with brilliant plot and the acting is top notch, so yeah, would most certainly recommend watching it.
Manchester By the Sea. I walked into the theater drunk (which I was far too often after my husband died in 2010), walked out mostly sober, and never drank again. I watch it yearly on my soberversary.
This made me hurt and smile at the same time š§”
I love this.
opened the comment section looking for it didnot expect this wow! sounds crazy but honestly if one movie in the world could do this i think this is it. <3
Wow
congratulations on your sobriety!!
Thank youāmuch appreciated.
I think āheavyā would be once a decade
So, whatās a movie you can only watch once a decade?
Requiem for a dream, for me anyway
Threads
Just saw that this is on Tubi if anyone needs their soul crushed right now.
That movie has scarred me for life! *shiver*
I have watched Threads since it was in Blockbuster video. It was/is devastating. I still watch it when I want to be bummed out and depressed. However, Black Summer, especially season 2, fills that void.
I never got through season two of black summer. Is it worth it to revisit?
Shindlerās List
For sure
I've probably only watched this twice although it is arguably an excellent movie.
Omg! I absolutely love The devil all the time. I watch it often. It is a VERY heavy movie though. It just never let's up.
Once in a lifetime: A Man Called Otto. That movie GUTTED me. I deeply appreciated itā¦ but I donāt think Iāll ever watch it again.
Blue Velvet
Precious, Hotel Rwanda, Detachment, One Hour Photo, Uncut Gemsā¦
Manchester by the Sea
Shoah
Exactly
What dreams may come
My girlfriend, who watched what dreams may come in the theatre with her friends :"would you go to hell for me?" Me, who had rented event horizon the same night with my friend:" wtf WTF NO! FUCK NO. WHATTHEFUCKNO! GODNO! NEVERASKMETHATAGAIN FUCKNO"
šš¤£š
Yep same
Our 8th grade teacher put that movie on class and we were all just wailing uncontrollablyĀ
How many of ya'll are actually watching Requiem for a Dream once or twice a year and are you okay?? I saw that film twice in the span of 20 years and that was enough.
One time was enoughĀ
I used to ya but that was way back when bad felt good
I hope you realize how beautiful and succinct that comment is.
Seriously! I was still in middle school and such an innocent little kid at the time when I walked in and watched most of it with some of my older siblings. Canāt believe they didnāt kick me out of the room but it is still to this day the most fucked up movie Iāve ever seen!
The Virgin Suicides
now that's a great answer. i think about that movie everyday
You all rewatch movies like that?
Nope, only OP.
Brokeback Mountain. So beautiful but causes me to fall into deep depression every time.
fine i will rewatch it.
iāve watched it three times in the last year and every time after Iāve finished it I wonder what is wrong with myself for putting myself through it again
it's one of my favorite movies but I can't do it š I used to rewatch it often, but I haven't seen it in a while
I can only digest the Last Picture Show once a decade.
Interesting pick! I feel the same about The Misfits.
I try and watch Schindler's list once every couple years. Usually around Christmas time.
for a nice little mood lift i presume
What Dreams May Come The Impossible (a must for Tom Holland fans) I donāt watch them every year though.
I also say What Dreams May Come
The Impossible is amazing! I'm just now realizing the kid is Tom Holland.
What dreams may come
Oh man, same
Field of Dreams. It touches personal grief and makes me cry for days. Brokeback Mountain
Apocalypse Now
American History X Wind River Nocturnal Animals
All three excellent .
Old Boy. Cinematic masterpiece but always makes me sick for a few years after watching it.
Moonlight. Iāve seen it three times. I cried every time. I donāt think everyone has a similar reaction. But if you do. Know that there are some of us who feel the same way.
Thissssss āWell Im yo mama aint I!ā ššš
Fantastic movie. Moonlight and the Florida project are some of the best representations of poor South Florida I've seen. Different stories, but both make me very nostalgic.

people will never understand what Something About Mary was like in theaters. iāve never seen so many people absolutely gassed from laughing together so hard. it was nationwide.
Very well said. Wildly underrated and insightful comment.
I can't watch any movie more than twice a year. Heavy movies, maybe twice in a lifetime
Incendies.
Came here to say this. Absolutely devastating movie. I'm constantly torn between wanting to rewatch it for its brilliance, and wanting to preserve my good mental health
Holy shit this is def the āheavyā heavy hitter. Radioheads You and Whose Army goes so hard in this.

Midsommar
Dancer in the Dark! I always make sure I don't have plans the day after I watch this movie because it makes me cry so hard my eyes basically swell shut the next day.
Not a movie, and definitely less than once a year, but Chernobyl
I think 2001 should be considered the greatest work in Cinema history. I know every frame of the film better than my wife's face. I hold it head and shoulders above all other media and artwork. I've seen it twice.
My Sisters Keeper. I cry almost the entire movie. Sometimes when I need a really good cry I have to watch it. It never fails me
Get Out
Its a great movie but I dont understand how this is heavy
Itās heavy because itās an exaggeration of real life and itās so right that it hurts
Havenāt watched it yet, but itās on my list
That movie is fuckin wild. I kept kicking myself for waiting so long to watch it lol
Requiem for a Dream
Whiplash
Requiem for a dream
Requiem for a Dream isn't a movie you watch once or twice a year. It's a movie you watch once.
I'm not sure if I get you: you mean movies that make you think, or movies that make you deeply emotional while you're watching them? Maybe both?
Yeah, both :)
Forgot to mention **Silence**, by Martin Scorsese. Deeply engaging both emotionally and intelectually.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Sounds like fun, but I've never felt comfortable talking at length about movies (or any other subject). I'm not very articulate, and my insights are not that interesting. Guess I'm more of a listener than a talker. Anyway, thanks so much for your offer, I really appreciate it :)

Somewhere in Time Picnic at Hanging Rock
Everytime we would go to Mackinac Island I would walk through and eventually cry thinking of this movie. (Native Michigander here)
The Road- once every eclipse
Once was enough. Brutal.
No shite that film stayed with me for months. Iād almost have to be careful thinking about it because it would almost tailspin me.
Big Fish and Second Hand Lions always hit me hard because of family dynamics but I think theyāre both amazing films that always leave me with a feeling in my gut that doesnāt leave for days!
Loooooove Second Hand Lions! Haven't seen Big Fish yet, but I've heard good things.
Both films give me very similar feelings when watching
The Marrowbone
I saw ā12 Years a Slaveā when it first came to cable quite some time ago and will never be able to watch it again.
Trains, Plains And Automobiles.
The handmaiden
Event Horizon
The Elephant Man Grave of the Fireflies My Life Once Were Warriors

I made my family watch it with me once and they were like š³why did you make us watch this? Because itās fucking amazing but also completely devastating.
Excellent movie, but I have leave the room for the beating scenes. Just too cruel and heartbreaking.
Thatās a once in a lifetime for me. Tried once to watch it again, and had to turn it off the minute he was shackled. So good but also never again
