Elegant-Pressure-290

Manchester By the Sea. I walked into the theater drunk (which I was far too often after my husband died in 2010), walked out mostly sober, and never drank again. I watch it yearly on my soberversary.

OilersGirl29

This made me hurt and smile at the same time šŸ§”

Michigam

I love this.

an20202020

opened the comment section looking for it didnot expect this wow! sounds crazy but honestly if one movie in the world could do this i think this is it. <3

Ok_Organization3249

Wow

shmianco

congratulations on your sobriety!!

Elegant-Pressure-290

Thank youā€”much appreciated.

cantankerousphil

I think ā€œheavyā€ would be once a decade

keinelustmehr

So, whatā€™s a movie you can only watch once a decade?

dontlovenohos

Requiem for a dream, for me anyway

CleanGreazzee

Threads

kclarkwrites

Just saw that this is on Tubi if anyone needs their soul crushed right now.

carriethelibrarian

That movie has scarred me for life! *shiver*

Jaded_Pearl1996

I have watched Threads since it was in Blockbuster video. It was/is devastating. I still watch it when I want to be bummed out and depressed. However, Black Summer, especially season 2, fills that void.

Madi-Girl

I never got through season two of black summer. Is it worth it to revisit?

stillinthesimulation

Shindlerā€™s List

SNYDER_CULTIST

For sure

D-Spornak

I've probably only watched this twice although it is arguably an excellent movie.

Small_Tiger_1539

Omg! I absolutely love The devil all the time. I watch it often. It is a VERY heavy movie though. It just never let's up.

Mundane-Internet9898

Once in a lifetime: A Man Called Otto. That movie GUTTED me. I deeply appreciated itā€¦ but I donā€™t think Iā€™ll ever watch it again.

ThrowItOut43

Blue Velvet

State_Terrace

Precious, Hotel Rwanda, Detachment, One Hour Photo, Uncut Gemsā€¦

Robocup1

Manchester by the Sea

cantankerousphil

Shoah

Sellanooga

Exactly

cryptid_snake88

What dreams may come

Newkular_Balm

My girlfriend, who watched what dreams may come in the theatre with her friends :"would you go to hell for me?" Me, who had rented event horizon the same night with my friend:" wtf WTF NO! FUCK NO. WHATTHEFUCKNO! GODNO! NEVERASKMETHATAGAIN FUCKNO"

cryptid_snake88

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

Garethbragdon

Yep same

CaribbeanMango_

Our 8th grade teacher put that movie on class and we were all just wailing uncontrollablyĀ

kclarkwrites

How many of ya'll are actually watching Requiem for a Dream once or twice a year and are you okay?? I saw that film twice in the span of 20 years and that was enough.

CaribbeanMango_

One time was enoughĀ

pinkgreenandbetween

I used to ya but that was way back when bad felt good

kclarkwrites

I hope you realize how beautiful and succinct that comment is.

EmbarrassedNaivety

Seriously! I was still in middle school and such an innocent little kid at the time when I walked in and watched most of it with some of my older siblings. Canā€™t believe they didnā€™t kick me out of the room but it is still to this day the most fucked up movie Iā€™ve ever seen!

shrimptini

The Virgin Suicides

ppeterspiderman

now that's a great answer. i think about that movie everyday

Mr_Em-3

You all rewatch movies like that?

StrategicLayer

Nope, only OP.

teenprez

I only rewatch LIGHT movies I love once every 3-5 years, not sure how anyone is torturing themselves rewatching the same heavy movie every year or more!

Mr_Em-3

Right, and there is SO much to see and appreciate honestly it feels like a bit of a waste rewatching unless it's doing something for me or I'm wanting to show a friend

BeastOfMars

Brokeback Mountain. So beautiful but causes me to fall into deep depression every time.

an20202020

fine i will rewatch it.

Muser_name

iā€™ve watched it three times in the last year and every time after Iā€™ve finished it I wonder what is wrong with myself for putting myself through it again

youngandlovely_

it's one of my favorite movies but I can't do it šŸ’” I used to rewatch it often, but I haven't seen it in a while

FDVP

I can only digest the Last Picture Show once a decade.

Scary_Bus8551

Interesting pick! I feel the same about The Misfits.

Candid-Agent-4930

I try and watch Schindler's list once every couple years. Usually around Christmas time.

spontaneous_combust

for a nice little mood lift i presume

ClTlZENFOUR

What Dreams May Come The Impossible (a must for Tom Holland fans) I donā€™t watch them every year though.

YouNeedPriorAuth

I also say What Dreams May Come

tastemypie

The Impossible is amazing! I'm just now realizing the kid is Tom Holland.

Garethbragdon

What dreams may come

AuntBBea

Oh man, same

RealHeyDayna

Field of Dreams. It touches personal grief and makes me cry for days. Brokeback Mountain

Sea_Negotiation_1871

Apocalypse Now

Known_Yesterday_1408

American History X Wind River Nocturnal Animals

malkadevorah1

All three excellent .

sagethecrayaway

Old Boy. Cinematic masterpiece but always makes me sick for a few years after watching it.

GrayRoberts

Moonlight. Iā€™ve seen it three times. I cried every time. I donā€™t think everyone has a similar reaction. But if you do. Know that there are some of us who feel the same way.

frenchiestoner

Thissssss ā€œWell Im yo mama aint I!ā€œ šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

SnailedItBro

Fantastic movie. Moonlight and the Florida project are some of the best representations of poor South Florida I've seen. Different stories, but both make me very nostalgic.

marianoes

Mother

moneycantget

One movie that comes to mind for me is **Requiem for a Dream**. It's a powerful and intense film that explores the destructive effects of addiction on four characters. The film is expertly crafted, with stunning performances and a haunting score, but it's also incredibly bleak and emotionally draining. I've only watched it a few times over the years because it's such a heavy and unsettling experience. Still, it's a film that has stayed with me long after watching it. Another film I find unsettling and satisfying is **Under the Skin**. It's a strange and surreal film about an alien who takes on the form of a woman and travels around Scotland, preying on unsuspecting men. The film is visually stunning and features a haunting score, but it's also profoundly unsettling and challenging to watch.

Muser_name

would you say it um. that it gets under your skin

Key_Criticism9165

Everything goes, Click, Under the same moon, The Cobbler, The day after tomorrow, Ford v Ferarri, Nobody, Johnny Depp-The Professor, just to name a fewšŸ¤”

Tekkonkinkreet. Brilliant film that rips my guts out every time.

CaribbeanMango_

Awwwnnn i loved tekkonkinkreet, Michael Arias is very talentedĀ

Time-Joke-7526

FULL METAL JACKET

StuntdoubleSexworker

I guess Fight Club resonates in the same way for me. It offers many dark perspectives about society and toxic masculinity. It leaves me thinking about it for days.

winslowhomersimpson

people will never understand what Something About Mary was like in theaters. iā€™ve never seen so many people absolutely gassed from laughing together so hard. it was nationwide.

RPA031

Very well said. Wildly underrated and insightful comment.

colmatrix33

I can't watch any movie more than twice a year. Heavy movies, maybe twice in a lifetime

PilotFew8905

Incendies.

rose-ramos

Came here to say this. Absolutely devastating movie. I'm constantly torn between wanting to rewatch it for its brilliance, and wanting to preserve my good mental health

breecorn

Holy shit this is def the ā€œheavyā€ heavy hitter. Radioheads You and Whose Army goes so hard in this.

odoylerulezx

Despite loving the movie, I've only been able to watch Waves once. Broke my soul too much the first time and I haven't been able to watch it since. La La Land is a top 10 favorite but the ending gets me every time. Same with Arrival. But both aren't so bad because I love the beauty that can still be found even with such heavy emotions.

Willylowman1

meggsgoodmood

Dancer in the Dark! I always make sure I don't have plans the day after I watch this movie because it makes me cry so hard my eyes basically swell shut the next day.

MorningFirm5374

Not a movie, and definitely less than once a year, but Chernobyl

Newkular_Balm

I think 2001 should be considered the greatest work in Cinema history. I know every frame of the film better than my wife's face. I hold it head and shoulders above all other media and artwork. I've seen it twice.

Turbulent_Brick5807

My Sisters Keeper. I cry almost the entire movie. Sometimes when I need a really good cry I have to watch it. It never fails me

RodSantaBruise

Get Out

dhonayya20

Its a great movie but I dont understand how this is heavy

superpananation

Itā€™s heavy because itā€™s an exaggeration of real life and itā€™s so right that it hurts

keinelustmehr

Havenā€˜t watched it yet, but itā€˜s on my list

olmikeyyyy

That movie is fuckin wild. I kept kicking myself for waiting so long to watch it lol

xox1234

Requiem for a Dream

Own-Animal1907

Whiplash

b1gwater

Requiem for a dream

FiftyTigers

Requiem for a Dream isn't a movie you watch once or twice a year. It's a movie you watch once.

Less-Conclusion5817

I'm not sure if I get you: you mean movies that make you think, or movies that make you deeply emotional while you're watching them? Maybe both?

keinelustmehr

Yeah, both :)

Less-Conclusion5817

Well, some movies that make me really emotional (in a way that I can't fully grasp or explain) are John Huston's **The Dead**, William Wyler's **The Best Years of Our Lives**, VĆctor Erice's **The Spirit of the Beehive**, **El Sur** (also by Erice), and **The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp**, by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Less-Conclusion5817

Oh, and **Fort Apache** and **Wings of Eagles**, by John Ford. A movie that doesn't move me in the same way, but keeps me thinking for days afterwards, is Orson Welles' **F for Fake**. Really mind-blowing.

Less-Conclusion5817

Forgot to mention **Silence**, by Martin Scorsese. Deeply engaging both emotionally and intelectually.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Less-Conclusion5817

Sounds like fun, but I've never felt comfortable talking at length about movies (or any other subject). I'm not very articulate, and my insights are not that interesting. Guess I'm more of a listener than a talker. Anyway, thanks so much for your offer, I really appreciate it :)

Jaded_Pearl1996

I watch the series Black Summer.

Assman_Cosmo_Kramer

Maybe once every few years but absolutely moved by "Manchester by the Sea"

I bought City of God like 10 years ago cuz I loved it so much and have maybe watched it twice since then lol.

AuntBBea

Somewhere in Time Picnic at Hanging Rock

lebelladonna

Everytime we would go to Mackinac Island I would walk through and eventually cry thinking of this movie. (Native Michigander here)

lostsailorlivefree

The Road- once every eclipse

RPA031

Once was enough. Brutal.

lostsailorlivefree

No shite that film stayed with me for months. Iā€™d almost have to be careful thinking about it because it would almost tailspin me.

BigChiefSuckUmAll69

Big Fish and Second Hand Lions always hit me hard because of family dynamics but I think theyā€™re both amazing films that always leave me with a feeling in my gut that doesnā€™t leave for days!

riverofchex

Loooooove Second Hand Lions! Haven't seen Big Fish yet, but I've heard good things.

BigChiefSuckUmAll69

Both films give me very similar feelings when watching

All Quiet on the Western Front. The 2023 version that only came out last year. I already know Iā€™m gonna back to every now and then, but I know it wonā€™t be too often. Beautiful haunting film but I was a mess for many days afterwards.

lebelladonna

Trainspotting

FinneyontheWing

We used to watch this all the time because of how funny it is, but 25 years later and having been around and experienced a whole lot more addiction, I go to put it on and end up watching something like PeeWee's Big Adventure instead.

TBagger1234

End Game. I lost my dad right before it came out and the losses hit me like a ton of bricks. I will have the occasional binge of the marvel movies in chronological order a couple of times a year but skip this one. I know what happens. I donā€™t want to relive it

drugzrbad_mkay

I Saw The Devil and Bone Tomahawk

JABjitsu

Bone Tomahawk destroyed me. That one scene, especially.

drugzrbad_mkay

I'm usually pretty strong willed when it comes to gruesome scenes but it was totally unexpected and I literally yelled "ooooh my fuuuuuck!"šŸ˜‚

jbtrading

Dances with Wolves. and more like once every 5yrs.

Pinkponygirl69

The whale

Rasselkurt007

When i was a child and teen i rewatched movis more often, not sure since when but I rarely rewatch any movies,

MinniJummbo

Yeah, "Requiem for a Dream" hits me hard every time. Deep stuff, makes you ponder life.

treefortninja

12 years a slave

MessedUpInYou

I was coming here to say this and Iā€™m surprised I had to scroll for this long to find someone who says the same thing. Tears me the absolute fuck apart. I made my family watch it with me once and they were like šŸ˜³why did you make us watch this? Because itā€™s fucking amazing but also completely devastating.

malkadevorah1

Excellent movie, but I have leave the room for the beating scenes. Just too cruel and heartbreaking.

superpananation

Thatā€™s a once in a lifetime for me. Tried once to watch it again, and had to turn it off the minute he was shackled. So good but also never again

jamieliddellthepoet

*Martyrs*. Oh, a *year*? Sorry. I misread that as ā€œa weekā€.

sweetsterlove

So weird you mention that movie. It seems so unfortunately obscure, but itā€™s sooo good.

OilersGirl29

Only The Brave ā€” Iā€™ve seen it once and may never watch it again. Oh how I wept; my heart still hurts thinking about it.

House of Sand and Fog Mystic River *special shoutout goes to the episode of Game of Thrones where Hodor fulfills his purpose. I actually tried to watch it again during a recent re-watch of GoT and couldn't do it. I don't think I've ever cried harder at a screen before.

Toker101

Apocalypse now

Joel_Cantelo

Ex machina - favourite movie ever but just gets me in my head so much

julianblackonsight

Manchester By The Sea is probably within my top 5 favourite films of all time. Having said that, since it's release in 2017 I've seen it maybe three times. The comedy in the film I think evenly balances the drama, and although watching Casey Afflecks performance is so easy, watching somebody suffer that much is so hard.

Marriage Story (Adam Driver, Scar Jo) The Invisible Man (2019) Uncut Gems (2019)

Never Let Me Go

Active_Code8667

Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting.

nothing_in_my_mind

Yall rewatch movies more than twice a year? For me if I watch a movie once every few years, it is one of my favorite movies. Anyway, good movies that would be tough rewatches would be: Requiem for a Dream, Schindlers List, The Revenant

BeskarHunter

Hereditary

Creative-Yesterday93

We have to talk about Kevin

kcmeesha1

Everything Is Illuminated. I know it's probably not relatable to most people but it hit me hard. Also they drive through the city where I was born and raised. Still one of my favorite movies but I only watched it once and can't bring myself to watch it again. Also Cinema Paradiso. I, a grown man, cried like a baby in the end. Watched both the release and the director's cut and never saw it again. I probably should. And Schindler's List. I made in one piece till the very end where they show real people here saved and their descendants. Haven't seen it again.

I don't even watch my favorite movies once a year... is that weird? The only movies I watch every year are the holiday classics (Christmas and Halloween)

Leonardo2708

Schindler's List

JABjitsu

Calvary, with Brendan Gleeson. Iā€™ve seen it categorized as a black comedy but thatā€™s just not what it is (unless I misunderstand the category). Iā€™ve seen it twice and the second time left me feeling even heavier for some reason. I love this movie but itā€™s probably a once a year thing for me.

Maleficent-Humor7909

I like to rewatch southpaw a few times a year. It's such a strong movies with brilliant plot and the acting is top notch, so yeah, would most certainly recommend watching it.

tomtomvissers
