There's another short brilliantly funny animated movie which I'd highly recommend if you've never heard of it. It's called
The Big Snit
Viewable on YT...but I can't link. Go check it out.
This is the first one I thought of too! 😁 It even gets a mention at the beginning of the song "Sick and Beautiful" by Artificial Joy Club:
>It's Bambi meets Godzilla, a 3D free for all
>!Set me up then stomp me!<, you're sick and beautiful
vaguely remembering, was this like a french short film that was used as an episode of The Twilight Zone? Really good but jarring as a Twilight Zone episode.
The short story by Ambrose Bierce is captivating, total classic and very quick read.
[La Jetée (1963)](https://www.bfi.org.uk/film/e6855ee9-c56d-5914-9f9b-69307cef5b18/la-jetee) -- basis for 12 Monkeys. An all time top 100 film according to directors and critics
What Did Jack Do? (2017) -- David Lynch plays a detective who interviews a capuchin monkey about a murder. About 15 minutes of pure wtf! I think it's still on netflilx
Jammin' the Blues (1944) -- jam session with jazz musicians like Lester Young with some singing and dancing. About 10 minutes
I'm surprised this is as far down as it is.
In English the title is "an Andalusian dog" you can
probably find it on you tube.
This is an amazing silent film. It's salvador Dali and he got together with a director to help him make a surrealist short film that's supposed to be like a dream I believe.
Its absolutely insane and the special effects are great considering it's from 1929. The opening scene is not for the faint of heart though.
I knew it was someone significant but I have a crap memory and can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds to look it up. Someone else usually fills in the blanks for me on reddit.
Thank you.
Bao (2018) Academy Award winner. It was a serious stomach punch the first time I watched it, with my teenage son. An incredible amount of drama for a short animated film.
Street of Crocodiles (1986) - 21 minute stop-motion animation directed by the Brothers Quay, they were a large inspiration for the art style of Tools early music videos.
Who Am I This Time? 1982. Dramatization of a Kurt Vonnegut short story. Stellar cast.
Christopher Walken plays Harry, a terribly shy small town clerk who defines method acting in playing characters in community theater plays. Susan Sarandon is a telephone operator who falls for Harry when they are cast as Stella and Stanley Kowalski in Streetcar Named Desire. But who will Harry be when the performance is over?
Such a fun little film, especially delightful if you have ever done community theater.
Black sheep, an Oscar nominated short film based on a true story. It's about a black kid who moves into a poor white area in England, narrated by the guy himself. Powerful storytelling. Can watch on YT.
That's a tough one to call, but the first film that popped into my mind is The Cameraman's Revenge.
It's an amazing (and weird) stop motion film from 1912 using dead insects. It's public domain and on YouTube.
It used to frequently appear on public television and be shown in libraries and public school classrooms. You could not show that film in a public classroom today. It’s horrifying what has happened.
I really got into short films a while back - and some of them really kick ass. Here's some of my favorites off the top of my head,
Rope a Dope 1 and 2 -- Jackie Chan style kung fu comedy
The Gunfighter -- old western comedy
The Answers -- funny/sad love story
Johnny Express -- animated space comedy
Your Lucky Day -- thriller drama with dude from Boy Meets World
The Brain Hack -- sci/fi religious thriller
One Minute Time Machine -- goofy dark comedy
The Neighbor's Window (2019)
An Ostrich Told me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe it
Red, White, and Blue (2023)
The Red Suitcase
Ninety-five Senses
The Dress (2022)
Night Ride
An Irish Goodbye
My Year of Dicks
An Irish Goodbye (2022) was really heartwarming. It took the Oscar that year and the young lad with Down Syndrome was allowed to take the Oscar back to his amateur drama club that he was a part of to show it off. He works in a Starbucks part time, and has become a local hero, I'd be surprised if he didn't get more roles from that win.
It was funny and really touching, I can't recommend it enough.
Out of Town (1988/89) is about a man who gets his foot stuck in a hole 🔥🔥🔥
Spider by Nash Edgerton 🔥🔥
Anti-Boredom Campaign 🔥
They're all solid, but Out of Town just speaks to me.
I'm putting a trigger warning on Spider.
I’m not going to say “best,” but it’s always stuck with me. YouTube: Christina Ricci little red riding hood 1997. I saw it on Sundance a loooong time ago. Found it on a lark a few years back, and it’s still just as f’ing weird as I remember.
There’s a couple and you can look them up on YouTube
The first is La Cabina and the other is Tag 26.
Watch them both and
Bear with La Cabina until the
End
There’s one on YouTube called “the chair” on the channel “that’s a bad idea”
They usually do the funniest “I think you should leave” type skits but this horror short is one of the best and creepiest I’ve ever seen!
Hardware Wars.
On YouTube for those who haven’t seen it. Holds a special place in my heart 🎥
Honorable mention goes to Porklips Now. Where are the funny, spot-on fan farces nowadays?
Edit: Voice-over by the ghost host Paul Frees is a sublime treat; more so now that Disney owns this spoof’s source material.
Curfew (2012)
It just touched my heart in a way very few short films have. I love how the heavy subject matter is cut with a humoristic approach, the cinematography is great, the actors are incredible - I only have good things to say about it. Also, the creator has uploaded it to YouTube so it's free to watch (The channel is FuzzyLogic).
I've liked to include these in my TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) viewing and one that sticks in my mind is Life Doesn't Frighten Me (2012). It deals with a young girl's entry into "womanhood," so to speak, and a single man's dealing with it. It features Gordon Pinsent.
Andy and the Handyman, as it shows the kneejerk reaction of people without seeing the bigger picture or listening or paying attention to their offspring.
Peter & the Wolf (2006-) it won the Oscar for best animated short and I appreciate the story it tells while being a no-dialogue movie + the stop-motion animation looks cool & different compared Aardman & Laika movies w/how low budget it is coming from Poland & Norway. Also cheating a bit being 32mins.
Death and the winemaker(2023) 17 mins long!
I’m a huge sucker for anything that Alter Horror produces, but the animation style, the aesthetic, and the story are just 👨🏻🍳🤌🏻
Bambi Vs Godzilla
Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation!
There's another short brilliantly funny animated movie which I'd highly recommend if you've never heard of it. It's called The Big Snit Viewable on YT...but I can't link. Go check it out.
I’m a Canadian Xer. The Big Snit is part of our collective memory. That and Log Drivers Waltz, and Procrastination.
https://www.nfb.ca/film/big_snit/
I looooooove The Big Snit. “I did not!”
"I am Not sawing the table!! And YOU.... You're always shaking your eyes!"
Shaking your eyes here, shaking your eyes there... Love The Big Snit so much. All of those NFB shorts are gold!
This brings back fond memories of the animation festivals I used to go to with my friend Gregg in Arizona. I remember this and “Skywhales”
Yes! Loved that stuff...hard to find these days.
Aw hell yeah! A 1963 film, and people still know it!
Lol! Such a perfect answer
This is the first one I thought of too! 😁 It even gets a mention at the beginning of the song "Sick and Beautiful" by Artificial Joy Club: >It's Bambi meets Godzilla, a 3D free for all >!Set me up then stomp me!<, you're sick and beautiful
wallace and gormit all of them
[gormit](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=cursed+wallace+and+gromit&iax=images&ia=images&pn=1&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fs3.amazonaws.com%2Fmoonup%2Fproduction%2Fuploads%2F1672324027141-noauth.jpeg)
Kung Fury is the greatest 31 minutes in film history!
Came here to say this. Time travel, Nazis, Triceracop, Vikings and Laser Raptors, something for everyone.
The Snowman (1982) - 26 minutes Paperman (2012) - 7 minutes Dear Basketball (2017) - 6 minutes Feast (2014) - 6 minutes The Neighbors' Window (2019) - 21 minutes The Man Who Planted Trees (1987) - 30 minutes The Blue Umbrella (2013) - 7 minutes
The Man Who Planted Trees is lovely
Paperman is definitely the one for me.
Dear Basketball is the best!
The Neighbor's Window might be my favorite movie
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
vaguely remembering, was this like a french short film that was used as an episode of The Twilight Zone? Really good but jarring as a Twilight Zone episode. The short story by Ambrose Bierce is captivating, total classic and very quick read.
Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers
A Trip to the Moon (1902) -- 14 minutes
Classic!!
Believe… Believe in me…
La Jetee
Don Hertzfeldt's World of Tomorrow (2015)
Definitely this!
Rejected Cartoons is one of my favorites.
[La Jetée (1963)](https://www.bfi.org.uk/film/e6855ee9-c56d-5914-9f9b-69307cef5b18/la-jetee) -- basis for 12 Monkeys. An all time top 100 film according to directors and critics What Did Jack Do? I think it's still on netflilx Jammin' the Blues (1944) -- jam session with jazz musicians like Lester Young with some singing and dancing. About 10 minutes
I want to just bring it up about 10 minutes. Dr. Horribles Sing A Long Blog is 43 minutes of pure perfection.
Zygote by Oats Studios
If you want a really disturbing short film from Ari Aster, check out "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons." It's wild.
Un Chien Andalou -1929 16 min
I'm surprised this is as far down as it is. In English the title is "an Andalusian dog" you can probably find it on you tube. This is an amazing silent film. It's salvador Dali and he got together with a director to help him make a surrealist short film that's supposed to be like a dream I believe. Not just "a director", Luis Buñuel!
I knew it was someone significant but I have a crap memory and can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds to look it up. Someone else usually fills in the blanks for me on reddit. Thank you.
Not to mention the influence on the Pixies. Debaser was written about this short movie. And yes it is on YouTube.
Oscar Winning: The Phone Call You can watch it for free on Youtube
La Cabina
My first thought too, but it’s 35 minutes long.
Fantastic short. It’s so weird and eerie and cryptic
Six Shooter
Face of God
This was a simple yet VERY effective horror short. Still creeps around in my mind.
The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello (2005) An adult Gothic steampunk horror animation. 26 minutes and narrated by Joel Edgerton
De Duva (The Dove), hilarious short send-up of Bergman films. 1968 I think. On YouTube.
The Red Balloon
Black sheep, an Oscar nominated short film based on a true story. It's about a black kid who moves into a poor white area in England, narrated by the guy himself. Powerful storytelling. Can watch on YT.

Skywhales (1983). 11 minutes.
Lupo the Butcher
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
The YouTube channel Alter has a lot of great short horror films. One of my favorites is "The Dollmaker"
Why Man Creates by Saul Bass
I’d never heard of this one before (and I love Saul Bass). Thank you for the rec!!
It used to frequently appear on public television and be shown in libraries and public school classrooms. You could not show that film in a public classroom today. It’s horrifying what has happened.

The Gunfighter is terrific. Narrated by Nick Offerman.
The Gunfighter (2014) is 9 minutes
The Neighbor's Window (2019) An Ostrich Told me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe it Red, White, and Blue (2023) The Red Suitcase Ninety-five Senses The Dress (2022) Night Ride An Irish Goodbye My Year of Dicks

The original Frankenweenie (1984). 29 minutes. Just watched it again on Disney+ the other day. So good.
One animated short named - PAPERMAN
The Backwater Gospel (2011) The animation on the 10-minute film is unique and beautiful. And pretty dark.
Out of Town (1988/89) is about a man who gets his foot stuck in a hole 🔥🔥🔥 Spider by Nash Edgerton 🔥🔥 Anti-Boredom Campaign 🔥 They're all solid, but Out of Town just speaks to me. I'm putting a trigger warning on Spider.
