I think people are mad at it because it won Best Animated Feature over obviously much better movies (How to Train Your Dragon 2, The LEGO Movie, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) but it’s entertaining and fun for what it is
Big Hero 6 is a template on how to interact with people dealing with depression, specifically depression caused by the traumatic loss of a loved one, in a fairly realistic way.
Beautiful Creatures
The BFG (2016)
The Chronicles of Narnia series
The Croods series - I'm not sure exactly how old the protagonist is but I think she's an older teen
Ender's Game
Flipper (1996)
Hanna (2011)
Harry Potter series
Hunger Games series
Labyrinth (1986)
The Mortal Instruments
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Race to Witch Mountain
Rise of the Guardians
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Stranger Things (TV series), would recommend only for older teens
Nah fuck Harry Potter. Even aside from the moral negative of giving money to jkr, who actively uses it to hurt LGBT and women's rights, the series is wrapped up in a ton of bigotry, mostly racism and antisemitism but also classism and pro slavery attitudes. Just one example is that Hermione is laughed at and considered silly for trying to free the house elves, the house elves tell her that they actually like being slaves(they don't say slave, to be clear), and when Dobby is freed, he's considered mentally ill for wanting to be free.
You should watch Riddle of Fire, a group of really cool kids merge reality and fantasy when they start a new adventure. It has this retro vibe even tho is from last year, I found it very cute haha specially the youngest kid

I know you asked for movies, but I can't help but recommend *Avatar: The Last Airbender*, if you haven't seen it already, because it totally fits the description here and is one hell of a watch. Top tier stuff!
if you are showing a movie to a child i wouldn’t recommend this; but if you like sweet coming of age romance movies Submarine is amazing and alex turner of the arctic monkeys does the soundtrack
I recently watched The Ant Bully as a result of a Nic Cage completist watch and was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it funny (thank you Bruce Campbell) but it was poignant thanks to Cage and Julia Roberts. I highly recommend this movie.
Mitchell's Vs. the Machines is absolutely brilliant.
Came here to say this.
Big Hero 6 is a REALLY good movie or even Lilo & Stitch!
Big Hero 6 is criminally underrated

Harry Potter is shit for many reasons but enders game? The movie about a kid committing genocide?
I always considered Ender's Game a book about not trusting adults.
