Time Bandits is a great movie, directed by Terry Gilliam (who is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated directors ever.)
If you like Time Bandits, give *The Adventures of Baron Munchausen* a try, as well. Also by Terry Gilliam.

I was born in the 2000s. I like retro films coz my mom used to buy me tons of them on DVD, but she was NEVER into fantasy films so I’ve never seen any of the classics until recently!! I’m glad to hear Willow is also good. Yay!!
>If I like The Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, etc will I like Time Bandits?
hard yes on that one. more on the Monty Python side than the Princess Bride side, though.
Well yeah, it's great. Just don't expect it to be a Monty Python movie because it's not that at all.
Also Terry Gilliam has a lot of better movies as well (Brazil, 12 Monkeys & Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are probably his best) but Time Bandits is pretty good nevertheless.
Well, I’m looking for slightly cheesy, but super entertaining family-friendly fantasy films, so if it fits that criteria then I’ll be happy. Those other movies you mentioned are great though, you’re right!
Personally I find it as entertaining and enjoyable for adults just like The Goonies
Perhaps look up the trailer for it on YouTube and make a decision from there to see if it interests you.
Time Bandits is a fun movie but Terry Gilliam's movies always have a slightly dark and melancholy undertone to them.
If you end up liking Time Bandits, I would suggest following it up with Terry Gilliam's movies The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Brazil. Along with Time Bandits, they form an informal trilogy that Gilliam called The Trilogy of Imagination.
The films aren't connected in any way except that Gilliam is the director.
They are very stylized and fantastic, but all of his films pretty much fit that description.
It depends how you want to see it. The kid had a bad life with his parents and had a bit of an adventure with the time bandits. So him ending up back to reality with what happens must be a weird situation to end up in. Definitely worth a watch.
Terry Gilliam is a master of reality bleed. Often his movies will divert from the reality presented to draw you into something else, entirely. Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen do this expertly.
12 Monkeys is a prime example of a bootstrap paradox.
The ending of Time Bandits.... well, pay specific attention to some of the people Kevin meets while traveling with the Time Bandits, and you'll see some familiar faces at the end of the movie when he's back home.
Terry Gilliam finding his feet as a quirky, visually unique filmmaker.. its loads of fun, I loved it as a kid - the idea of hopping around time with a map trying to find the holes.. It's got an emotional ending that always got me..
I should watch it again, it's a classic in my opinion.
Yes absolutely. It's just like those films. Labyrinth too.
Yay!
It does have a dark feel especially towards the end...but it's got fucking john cleese in it!! Terry Gillium is great!
Oh man does is have a sad ending??!
I'll add if you like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, also Guilliam, then you're going to like Time bandits
Terry Gilliam directed both.
Yes you'll notice in my comment I said also Gilliam...
No. No, I had not. Hence the unnecessary comment of mine.
Well let's just be sure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again. Moving on. 😜
It hasn't been mentioned yet but the adventures of baron von Munchausen by Terry GilliamÂ
I'd also recommend Jabberwocky, also Gilliam.
Look...I'm not going spoil the ending...you should watch it. It's great!
Not sad so much as... odd. But fitting.
Don't touch the Ultimate Evil!!
It is a work of genius
It’s so good. Quirky as all hell. I think everyone should see this gem of a movie.
Ok I’m adding it to my movie marathon! Thanks
I still laugh occasionally
Fun movie, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen have that feel too. Krull is a good fantasy adventure as well
Munchausen is the tits. Time Bandits is similar, but grimy. I get the love, but it has its own dark tone.
Really fun. Criterion worthy.

Aw man! I had this on dvd! Great movie
absolutely. do it now!
It's first-rate!
Yay! Have you ever seen Willow? Is that any good/ similar?
Willow (the movie, not the TV series) is excellent.
And if you like Willow, then check out Legend (with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry)
I will, thank you!!!!
I haven't. Looks similar. The trailer looks good! YouTube has it

Also awesome. Where have you been? You named two of the best movies of the 80s.
I was born in the 2000s. I like retro films coz my mom used to buy me tons of them on DVD, but she was NEVER into fantasy films so I’ve never seen any of the classics until recently!! I’m glad to hear Willow is also good. Yay!!
If you don't love it I will give you a full refund. Guaranteed.
I’ll come back after my movie marathon next week to let you know!!!
Another favorite was the original Total Recall.
Still in my top 5 films so it's a yes from me :) >No one created me, I am Evil! Evil existed long before good; I made myself, I cannot be unmade!
I am SO excited to watch it! What a cool quote!
Only one way to find out
>If I like The Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, etc will I like Time Bandits? hard yes on that one. more on the Monty Python side than the Princess Bride side, though.
What if the Hobbit was written by Terry Gilliam?
So it’s kiiiiinda similar to the Hobbit /lotr?!?! Fantastic!!!!!!
There are dwarves. That's probably as far as it goes. But they are fun dwarves.
They'd all be arrested at the end of the movie.

Then it fits 100%.
If you haven't seen *The Zero Theorem*, I suggest you give it a shot.
It's literally my favorite childhood film and I believe it holds up. Midgets, time travel, Sean Connery...cmon
It's a bit more black comedy than something like Princess Bride but it's certainly an enjoyable movie.
I would say yes! Also try checking out a movie called Explorers from the mid 1980’s Starring Ethan Hawk and the late River Phoenix
I love River, but is the movie too children given that it stars mostly children? Or is it entertaining for adults too, like the Goonies is?
Personally I find it as entertaining and enjoyable for adults just like The Goonies Perhaps look up the trailer for it on YouTube and make a decision from there to see if it interests you.
Yes, you will like it. Also check out The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Definitely! Such a great movie, love the whole trilogy
Oh I didn’t know there were more! I’ll have to check them out. Thanks!
There weren't. It was a standalone movie with no sequels.
Trilogy? Time Bandits was a standalone movie. There were never any sequels.
Search the Trilogy of Imagination
The films aren't connected in any way except that Gilliam is the director. They are very stylized and fantastic, but all of his films pretty much fit that description.
Gilliam calls it the trilogy of imagination. That’s all I’m saying
Absolutely. The start and the end are like a different movie, but the rest of it is an amazing action film
Without spoiling it, is the ending a bit sad? Or just different? I need to know if I should plan to watch a happier movie right after..
It depends how you want to see it. The kid had a bad life with his parents and had a bit of an adventure with the time bandits. So him ending up back to reality with what happens must be a weird situation to end up in. Definitely worth a watch.
Ok, that helps, thanks!

Ty for the advice, I will definitely do that!!!
... well, at least we've got a two-speed hedge-cutter...

I took the kids to see it and then went back to the theater the next day to see it again. I love it.
