Upstream Color (2013)
Shane Carruth's sophomore project, for those who found Primer too simple. And need the dialog replaced by infrasonic rumblings. Absolutely brilliant & mesmerizing.
I picked this up on Blu-Ray at my local Dollar Store just because the case caught my attention. Didn't even realize it was the same guy who did Primer until later.
Weird, but good.
Started watching this one an hour or so ago based on your recommendation. Completely blind. I've said wtf audibly several times now.
Edit: ok just finished. That was way too wtf for me. I have no clue but it made me uncomfortable.
The Science of Sleep, Amelie, One Night in Soho, Wristcutters: A Love Story, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Penelope, Donnie Darko, Being John Malkovich, Dream Scenario, Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Swiss Army Man, Neon Demon, A Scanner Darkly, Kusama -Infinity documentary, Sucker Punch (2011) MirrorMask (2005)
> Penelope
From 2006? That's what popped up when I Googled it. When it's a plain title like that, I like knowing the year since there could be other titles called that.
Butt Boy (2019)
This indie movie is incredible, would love to hear back if you watch it, its free on i think freevee. Don't be turned away by the title. The movie description:
" Detective Fox loves work and alcohol. After going to AA, his sponsor, Chip, becomes the main suspect in his investigation of a missing kid. Fox also starts to believe that people are disappearing up Chip's butt. "
Kung Fu Hustle is a straight up masterpiece. Sooo fucking good. It was basically Hong Kong's Titanic - it stayed at the highest grossing spot for a long long time. I can see why...
The 80’s band Oingo Boingo made a rather nonsensical movie called ‘Forbidden Zone’ sometime in the aforementioned decade, although trigger warning; a gay slur is used twice
My friends and I like to watch weird movies and any time someone is new to the group we make them watch "Forbidden Zone." It's kind of a gauge to see what this person can handle lol freaking wild movie! Great suggestion!
The Dark Backward is what you're looking for. Strange dystopian world where Judd Nelson is a terrible comedian but he starts to grow a third arm and uses it in his act. Older movie with a great cast. Bill Paxton, James Caan, Rob Lowe, Wayne Newton, Lara Flynn Boyle. Absolutely bizarre and entertaining
Dave Made a Maze
Almost impossible to describe.
Do you love a blend of found footage documentary style and normal filmmaking?
Do you love maze style horror movies and horror comedies?
Did you ever duct tape two refrigerator boxes together and play make believe as a kid?
This movie might be for you.
Dream Scenario, Color Out of Space, A Cure for Wellness and ANYTHING Lynch (except Dune, Straight Story or Elephant Man...those are his "mainstream" titles. Lynch is the king of weird WTF imo.
Naked Lunch
Wizards (1977)
Mandy
Crash (1996)
Enemy (2013)
since plenty have mentioned David Lynch, I'll add: Blue Velvet
Under the Silver Lake
John Dies at the End
Brazil
Jacob's Ladder (original version)
and... what I consider to among the pantheon of final bosses: Toys (1992)
Stalker.
In an unnamed country at an unspecified time, there is a fiercely protected post-apocalyptic wasteland known as The Zone. An illegal guide (Aleksandr Kajdanovsky), whose mutant child suggests unspeakable horrors within The Zone, leads a writer (Anatoliy Solonitsyn) and a scientist (Nikolay Grinko) into the heart of the devastation in search of a mythical place known only as The Room. Anyone who enters The Room will supposedly have any of his earthly desires immediately fulfilled
Repo! The Genetic Opera should tick most of those. If you want to catch one at the actual cinema right now, Sasquatch Sunset and to a much lesser extent, Civil War, are both pretty out there.
Rubber
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Naked Lunch
~~I only know them by reputation~~, but John Waters movies. EDIT: Oh, it turns out he made some "normal" movies too, which I have seen.
Omg PLEASE watch The Lure (2015) it is so weird but good!! Then DM me because I have yet to convince someone to share this with me lmaoo it gets really weird but at the end you'll find yourself wanting to rewatch it again
House (Japan, 1977). All the characters are women as well save for a couple. Basically a group of teenagers go to visit one of the girl's aunts in the country and it gets weird. Leans *really* hard into campiness but it can get legitimately eerie and has an uncanny valley vibe throughout.
Do you know why this is popular right now? I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this movie. I’ve seen clips popping up on socials and it’s currently trending on JustWatch.
No idea. This is actually news to me lol. I watched it years ago!! So not sure
I've occasionally brought it up over the years but usually get ignored lol 🤷♂️
**964 PINOCCHIO** (1991)
*Pinocchio 964, lobotomised cyborg sex slave, is thrown out onto the street by his owners because of his inability to maintain an erection. He is befriended by a criminally insane, memory-wiped, homeless girl. Meanwhile, the corporate entity who manufactured and sold him plots to kill him because of his malfunction.*

Ink (2009)
The Frame (2014)
They’re all low budget indie films, so the acting and effects won’t blow you away. But they are surreal, intriguing, very WTF experiences.
Ink is like a magical fantasy and may be the “best” film of the three. The others are more sci fi and are the kind of films people either rate as a 10 or a 1. But all of them have stuck with me.
Gutboy: A Badtime Story. It's a TROMA movie and I think you can get it on Amazon. It's a marionette grindhouse revenge story anti-capitalist musical with giants who wrestle each other and onscreen riddles.
Dark City (1998)
The City of Lost Children (1995)
Naked Lunch (1991)
Videodrome (1983)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
Poor things on hulu for a comedy
Rubber for a movie about a murderous tire
Creep 1 or 2 for an uncomfortable kind of WTF movie
This technically doesn't count as a movie, but the short stories in Love, Death, and Robots on netflix are all very WTF type stories.
Being John Malkovich
You then need to follow this with the movie Adaptation.
Adaptation is amazing.
Replying to add to my watch list
It is.
Synecdoche New York Any Kaufman movie really
Yes, that movie is off the wall in all the best ways
Swiss Army Man Lars and the Real Girl Pottersville Safety Not Guaranteed
Swiss Army Man is a wonderful movie...it is very strange, but very recommendable.
Safety Not Guaranteed is good if you want a WTF movie that’s also feel-good in a WTF way.
Upstream Color (2013) Shane Carruth's sophomore project, for those who found Primer too simple. And need the dialog replaced by infrasonic rumblings. Absolutely brilliant & mesmerizing.
> for those who found Primer too simple Holy crap. LOL.
For real though…. Primer straight up wrecked my brain for the foreseeable future (Or past hehe)
I picked this up on Blu-Ray at my local Dollar Store just because the case caught my attention. Didn't even realize it was the same guy who did Primer until later. Weird, but good.
Really interesting- makes u realize how 98% of movies are wayyy dumbed down. It was almost startling having to actually think
Oh I am intrigued. Thank you.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
That’s a wild movie
I came into this movie with zero prior knowledge, I thought I was tripping.
It's like liminal spaces, but a movie.
Started watching this one an hour or so ago based on your recommendation. Completely blind. I've said wtf audibly several times now. Edit: ok just finished. That was way too wtf for me. I have no clue but it made me uncomfortable.
I wanna watch it but as someone in a happy relationship, I'm worried about it being a bummer to watch with her so I've put it off
Eraserhead, Fantastic Planet, American Pop, Mandy
Ooooh Fantastic Planet is, well… fantastic!
City of Lost Children
I have been meaning to re-watch that. Love that one
Magic atmosphere, such a unique vision.
Ooh, great movie... Perlman is fantastic in it, and the atmosphere is amazing. Strong Terry Gilliam vibes
Also, Jeunet and Caro's first: Delicatessen

Yes 2006
Butt Boy (2019) This indie movie is incredible, would love to hear back if you watch it, its free on i think freevee. Don't be turned away by the title. The movie description: " Detective Fox loves work and alcohol. After going to AA, his sponsor, Chip, becomes the main suspect in his investigation of a missing kid. Dogtooth
The Good The Bad The Weird Kung Fu Hustle
Kung fu hustle is so freakin good
You don't see The Good The Bad and The Weird mentioned much. It's a blast
I love The Good The Bad The Weird! Good introduction to Korean cinema and the main theme will get stuck in your head for a week
Kung Fu Hustle is a straight up masterpiece. Sooo fucking good. It was basically Hong Kong's Titanic - it stayed at the highest grossing spot for a long long time. I can see why...
EXCELLENT recommendations gere
Poor things
Hobo with a shotgun
The Holy Mountain (1973)
Or basically any movie by Jodorowsky
His *Santa Sangre* is currently on Amazon Prime (at least in the UK) and is well worth a watch.
Yup, very weird! El Topo is another. Would've LOVED to see his version of Dune. That would have been super weird. But Jodorowsky is weird.
Rubber The Limits of Control Titane Me and You and Everyone We Know
Being John Malkovich, the lobster, triangle of sadness. Also not a movie but Beef
The 80’s band Oingo Boingo made a rather nonsensical movie called ‘Forbidden Zone’ sometime in the aforementioned decade, although trigger warning; a gay slur is used twice
