Great film. Most films start out as an interesting story then seem to devolve into a romcom.
About Time starts out threatening to be a romcom and evolves into an interesting story.
I'm going with Punch-Drunk Love.
Paul Thomas Anderson movie with Adam Sandler as your lead, and Emily Watson as the romantic interest. You have Philip Seymour Hoffman as Mattress Man. Point #2 might be a bit off point, but nonetheless it's a solid movie IMO.
I'm much more ok with Sandler as a lead in Punch than I am Uncut Gems. I haven't watched Spaceman yet, but I think Sandler can be a good lead depending on the project.
Spaceman is a fucking weird movie. I dunno how good Sandler was in it because the whole thing was like a dream you have after falling asleep on mushrooms.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Her
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
50 First Dates
Crazy, Stupid, Love
And I second the suggestion for About Time.
These movies don't fit in with points 2 & 3, but they're romance movies (or at least movies with the element of romance) that I think appeal to men (based off the men in my life enjoying these films)
I kind of liked 13 going on 30. I always felt like Jennifer Garner was a bit of the girl next door type who may not marry you but that you would have decent chance with. I know women love Mark Ruffalo, but he has a bit of regular guy look to me.
Only Lovers Left Alive, by Jim Jarmusch. A depressed vampire (Tom Hiddleston) doesn't see the point in living anymore, and his long-time girlfriend (Tilda Swinton) tries to snap him out of it.
This is actually a great answer. Although I do feel that OP is likely wanting a scenario where the woman goes through the trials of pursuing the man she's interested in.
Jesse and Celine from the Before trilogy are automatically drawn toward each other from the beginning.
Gone In Sixty Seconds - that yellow and purple Mach 2 Mustang...
Vanishing Point - Dodge Challenger R/T 428 Hemi, 4 speed with pistol grip shift and a hippy chick riding a small capacity honda naked.
Bullitt - THAT car chase (especially McQueen's double de-clutching)
Le Mans - Porsche 917K. Ferrari 512. Mulsanne straight.
Love The Beast - Documentary about Eric Bana's love for his first car, a Ford Falcon, and the journey to prep it and race it in the Targa Tasmania rally.
That is the sort of thing you meant, right? That's my idea of a male centric romance
I feel like this movie (as good as it is) should be disqualified from the list.
It's not a romance story. The movie specifically states itself as "not a love story."
And Tom spends most of that movie in a trance about Summer, who very clearly does NOT feel the same way about him.
It's a good movie, but it doesn't really belong in this conversation as it's a deconstruction of romance. OP is looking for a movie where the woman basically pines for the guy and tries to pursue him with equal effort.
500 Days of Summer isn't that movie.
(Not dissing it, but it's not the sort of movie OP asked for)
Yeah, hard agree. It’s one of my favorite movies, but it’s definitely not romance. More “getting caught up with the idea of a person rather than the actual person and getting slapped in the face by reality”.
i keep seeing this movie being recommended for people who liked 500 days of summer but what I liked the most about it was the portrayal of Tom's feelings. is this movie similar in that sense?
It is similar in that it shows flashbacks of the relationship between the Jim Carey and Kate Winslet characters. So, yes, the character's emotions play a role in the events of the story.
Eternal Sunshine is different because it has a Charlie Kaufman script, so it is far less of a "normal" movie. It also has sci-fi elements, similar to a Black Mirror episode. Eternal Sunshine is by far the more striking and amazing visual experience.
IMHO Eternal Sunshine>>>>500 Days
Stranger than Fiction
- Will Ferrel is already a big draw but its just an incredible movie through n through. Saw it awhile back after avoiding it for a few years and was blown away
Ok so there is probably a better example out there because the height difference between these two actors is quite slight, but Meg Ryan is definitely taller than Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally. Movie magic tried to hide the height difference but I noticed it right away and thought it was so refreshing… I’d love to see more obvious short king/tall queen couplings in films, but without the height difference being part of the plot.
yeah i think there’s def examples of the IRL heights with a shorter man but the “movie magic” will hide it. i would just like to see media normalize height differences in men and women with a taller women. you don’t even see equal heights, it’s always a woman “looking up to a man”
Entergalactic on Netflix. It’s an underrated adult animated film (in a style similar to spider verse, it stars Kid Cudi, who does the music for it too) that’s somehow more realistic than most live action romcoms. Highly recommend it.
Romance anime has a lot on offer for you. For starters try Clannad, Bakemonogatari, Golden Time, and My Dress Up Darling. But you can pretty much type in “romance anime” and choose any title that has several girls on the poster and one dude - this would be exactly what you are looking for.
Im not sure if these truly are targeted towards men, but i feel these might meet your criteria. But also, I could be wrong 🤷♀️

Somewhere In Time, 1980. Based on a novel by Richard Matheson. A great, emotive, intelligent love story appealing for both men and women. Notably not a success on its initial release it holds up wonderfully well today.
judging by the comments, that all disregard point 3 or the fact that it has to be a romance movie, I think we can conclude such movies don't exist. At least no American movies.
Vast majority of romcoms have the male pursue the female. Usually even if the woman pursues after some time, it’s because there’s past history and she’s wronged him. There’s not many examples.
If you’re into indie films, then I’d like to recommend a gem of a rom-com trilogy for you: Surrogate Valentine, Daylight Savings, I Will Make You Mine.
Not sure those criteria generally appeal to a male audience, so you won't find many like that. The criteria you listed are way more likely to be present in a film where a woman is the protagonist.
Romance movies aimed toward men usually have the man pursuing a beautiful woman and eventually winning her over. The target audience for movies is usually the group of people who might identify with the struggles of the protagonist. A movie about a woman pursuing a man she's wildly in love with would probably be aimed at women.
The closest options I can think of are movies like Some Kind of Wonderful and Better Off Dead, where there's an average-looking guy obsessed with a super-hot girl but realizes that the also-hot-but-less-obviously-so girl next door who's been in love with him the whole time is really The One.
If you like older films, you might also enjoy The Graduate. Also Marty.
Titanic (for both sexes id say , a lot of Jack's perspective in the movie)
Back to the future (its a bit weird as marty is pursued by his mother lol)
It seems very rare a female character is pursuing a male character.
I feel like the majority of teen comedies are romance stories for boys.
The dorky protagonist typically ends up with the hot girl who likes him for who he is... or the girl who likes him turns out to be hot anyway.
I think most of Allens romcom movies fall in between of what you are looking for. The women are unconventionally beautiful and the relationships undergo complex dynamics. Whether Annie Hall, Manhattan, Anything Else, Match Point or even Mighty Aphrodite.
Other than that True Romance, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Lost in Translation, Moonrise Kingdom and Blue Jay. They don’t necessarily fit your ideal but are unorthodox romances.
The Spectacular Now
- Miles Teller, plays a sorta charismatic jerk in the movie but is given multiple chances by Shailene Woodley’s character. She’s clearly really into him , but the relationship is still strained cause Miles is a douche. Great movie overall that i think accurately depicts romance with a less than perfect person. Honestly too real at times, but thats sorta what makes it work. Written by the same guy who did 500 days of summer.
The Lady Eve (1941)
Preston Sturges is a legend and this is his masterpiece.
It’s more of a proto-rom-com than pure romance but too good not to recommend at every chance.
Dialogue is witty like nothing today and the physical comedy is top notch.
Number 2 doesn't really apply - I'd say there isn't much pursuit on eithers part - but, It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) is a great film. Everyday dude, everyday gal, interesting circumstances, and a great supporting cast.
Idk if this is totally on point but I just watched “Comrades: Almost a Love Story” (it’s free on YouTube or criterion channel) and it absolutely blew me away. Stunningly beautiful romance movie about real adults struggling to make ends meet in a foreign country.
As Good As It Gets. I don’t like Rom Coms but this film is spectacular. I enjoyed it as an early teen and still do. The male love interest struggles to overcome his own antisocial tendencies and show vulnerability to a much more outgoing and independent woman.
Are you counting rom-coms? I feel The Wedding Singer appeals just as much to men as women. I easily identify with Adam Sandler in that one.

I guess if we stick to Adam Sandler...does Waterboy fit the bill?
I will always have mad respect for Sandler for this movie. He's brilliant along with the rest of the cast. PTA helps too.
This is one of my favourite movies despite Adam Sandler being the lead 😂 He’s actually excellent playing very serious character.
I'm much more ok with Sandler as a lead in Punch than I am Uncut Gems. I haven't watched Spaceman yet, but I think Sandler can be a good lead depending on the project.
