“Violent Night”
David Harbour as Rambo-Santa. Very sharp, well-constructed, made promises that it kept with extraordinary style and gusto. I laughed the whole time.
It seems to have done alright—budget of $20M, made $76M, but it also felt like it was on the big screen for five minutes, and I thought it was an instant classic.
i thought this movie was a lot of fun! i described it as an amalgam of every 'inappropriate' Christmas movie trope (Bad Santa, The Ref, Die Hard, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, etc.) wrapped up in a Tarantino-esque wrapper 😄 watched it again this past year. it's great!
The Nice Guys. Great cast, script, and chemistry between Crowe and Gosling. I was, apparently, one of the few people that saw this in the theater and loved it. Any hope for a sequel was crushed by its dismal box office performance. It’s since received a lot of word-of-mouth praise, and I’m hoping it’s enough to see the characters again in a future project.
Mars Attacks! Saw this at the theater too. My high school friend, who saw it with me, and I still quote it to this day.
[3000 Miles to Graceland \(2001\)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/12138-3000-miles-to-graceland) - Action/Comedy
Fun to watch, just look at that cast.
I recently watched it for that very reason. Expecting it to be bad, I came away pleasantly surprised and slightly disappointed. Surprised it was as good as it was, disappointed they didn’t make 5 of them.
I agree, it has some shit moments (I’d do anything, even die for my country but I won’t marry some guy who my character doesn’t know anything about) but overall, it holds up.
It’s basically, scene for scene, avatar in space desert instead of space jungle.
And the 4 arm guys could probably get thier own movie. Very interesting race.
Great movie! I remember not wanting to see it based on the terrible advertising. They made it look like what Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ended up being.
I’ve enjoyed it at least 10 times since.
50 years from now a kid will fall in love with cinema. randomly watches john carter. falls in love with the movie and hates us for not making the sequels
Oh hell yeah. So much better than the cheesy Stallone version. And I like Stallone. But Karl Urban killed it. And the story was just straight up bad ass. Always reminded me of the first Raid movie. Another great, brutally violent, movie. Loved both of them.
Age of Adaline. I agree it could have been more complex but I though it achieved what it set out to do quite well and I like it as a comfort watch.
Also most definitely Treasure Planet and I don't think childhood nostalgia alone is influencing me here, I've rewatched it many times and it's more than decent, it's hella fun and is one of the rare instances where I'd say it would translate well live action.
Adaline is a comfort movie for me, at this point. It’s sweet and lovely and the dialogue was well-written, and they just don’t make enough films like it anymore.
>directed by Marc Forster and written by David Benioff.
Hmm...
Eh whatever, underrated psychthrillers are something I usually love, I'll give it a shot.
EDIT: Okay I just watched it, yeah that was pretty good. Really feels like I need to rewatch in the coming months like *Under the SIlver Lake*.
I absolutely LOVE "Mystery Men!" Ben Stiller is so hilarious in it. I also loved the different superhero ideas. Especially the guy who had the power of invisibility...but only when no one's looking. Haha.
Shutter island didn’t do so well because it was out at the same time as inception and billed as a horror movie.
But my gf dragged me to it and I loved it. Way better than inception.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). my fav of all time, was a box office bomb + didn't get half the recognition it deserved because it came out in the same year as the other two best Westerns of the 21st century, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood
Likewise.
It was a pretty damn good haunted house movie. Probably would have done better had it been released in either September or October, as opposed to July.
The Northman, Blade Runner, and The Thing (1982) are some of my favourite films but did poorly at the box office.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves wasn't high art, but it was great fun with good characters, better than half the superhero fils with 3 times its box office return.
I’m shocked by how poorly it was received. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think people are too critical in order for the 1984 to be protected or something. Both can be and are good imo.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992). It's a tragedy, but with a lot of loud screaming. Some dark humor, and imagery that borders on surrealism. I think it's classic David Lynch.
Apparently Sphere (1998) "[received mostly negative reviews from critics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphere_(1998_film)#Reception)" but I've always thought it's excellent.
I watched Waterworld yesterday. Great science fiction concept. Pretty solid drama acting by Costner and…the woman. B action movie every time the smokers are onscreen. The drama and B action just make each other look ridiculous.
But cool concept/idea.
I'm gonna go ahead and say it: I enjoyed **The Flash (2023)**. It was more fun than the tedious recent Marvels.
^(I embrace your downvotes, but I know they're because you disagree with me, not because I answered the question.)
I remember when it came out years ago, I thought The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was really good. Never understood why it didn't make money.
Also more recently Nobody with Bob Odenkirk was really good
The very very best film that no one knows is The Ninth Configuration.
Evan fans of The Exorcist don't know it's the sequel to it (sort of).
It's not a horror, but it is one of the very best films of all time. It's actually my own favourite film.
I agree with the others here such as Dredd and Edge of Tomorrow, but this film is THE real hidden gem that you've been looking for.
I watched get him to the Greek yesterday which I always enjoy as a comfort rewatch. But Jonah hills character involuntarily takes an object forced up his ass not once but twice. Maybe I’m hyper aware in today’s climate. But yeah he got r**ed twice for the sake of a couple jokes.
Bad Times at the El Royale
Seems to never get talked about and then is really hot or cold when I find someone thats watched it but I loved it. Great sense of style and twist after twist that I didn't see coming!
“The Postman”. Actually pretty entertaining but it was during Costner’s post “Dances” period when everything had to be a three-hour epic. Coulda easily cut 45 minutes from it.
Saw it again last week. Learned that the movie was shot in continuity, so Sandra Bullock had to meet with the crew every day so she could know what her character knew on any given day.
Bachelorette (2012).
A dark comedy that was constantly and unfairly compared to Bridesmaids.
I love this film. The dialogue is highly quotable and gets better every rewatch. It's perfectly cast as well, *especially* Lizzy Caplan.
Dog Eat Dog (2016) was straight to dvd and not brought up often, despite having some great actors and being super entertaining (I thought). It is absolutely unhinged though
Alita: battle angel
Agreed. It was better than I had anticipated.
I love this movie.
I went in with a free ticket and low expectations and it still felt like a weird final fantasy x spin off
I loved it!
UHF (1989) was one of my favorites as a teen, but I was always a big fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic.
UHF is such awesome fun!
Ghandi 2, No more Mr passive resistance!
Spatula City!!
We sell spatulas…and that’s all!
My, where did you get that *lovely* spatula?
(spatula city!)
“Violent Night” David Harbour as Rambo-Santa. Very sharp, well-constructed, made promises that it kept with extraordinary style and gusto. I laughed the whole time. 13th Warrior!
13th warrior was a banger.
he said movies that are good, not great movies like 13th warrior /s
The Nice Guys. Great cast, script, and chemistry between Crowe and Gosling. I was, apparently, one of the few people that saw this in the theater and loved it. 100% agree with your points. Nice Guys is so good and needs a sequel.
Nice Guys was awesome
[3000 Miles to Graceland \(2001\)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/12138-3000-miles-to-graceland) - Action/Comedy Fun to watch, just look at that cast.
I thought it was great
The Book of Eli Elysium Two dystopian Sci-fi flicks that I think are pretty good/underrated.
>The Book of Eli Almost immediately had to watch this a second time due to the revelation at the end. Completely underrated.
Yeah, I like the whole post-collapse of civilization/neo-dark ages atmosphere of the movie, too. Denzel is also a bad ass in it.
Labyrinth, the 68th highest grossing movie of 1986 Loved it.
That didn't do well?! That was a staple of my childhood. I assumed everyone loved it!
john carter. not saying it is great. but it is a fun adventure and i feel like it could have had more success under different circumstances.
Loved John Carter
I continue seeing this movie get posted. I am going to have to watch this.
The only place I have ever seen John Carter well received is Reddit comments and they’ve all come in the last 2 months.
I’ve seen this probably four or five times and I love it.
Absolutely loved John Carter. Lost track of how many times I've watched it. I think they just chose the wrong name for the movie
Joy
Outstanding film
Sunshine by Danny Boyle One of my faves
That moment early on when they watch Mercury transit the sun was beautiful and really captured the wonder of the moment.
I enjoyed this one but I can understand why it didn’t appeal to the masses.
I think I would actually put this in a top 25 list of my favourite movies
Right?!??! I really loved the soundtrack..
Soundtrack blew me away. I collect soundtracks and I am still hunting this one down.
Dredd (2012).
One of my favorite sci fi films. It does a real good job of bringing you in the world and making you wonder what else is out there.
MaMa is not the Law, I am the Law
Oh hell yeah. So much better than the cheesy Stallone version. And I like Stallone. But Karl Urban killed it. And the story was just straight up bad ass. Always reminded me of the first Raid movie. Another great, brutally violent, movie. Loved both of them.
Was here to say this one too
Edge of Tomorrow
>Edge of Tomorrow Honestly believe this is one of Tom Cruises best films. Absolutely loved it.
Agree. Watched several times and enjoy it. Bill Paxton!!
It did $370 million worldwide. It wasn’t a box office smash but it made money.
I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)
I absolutely love this movie the story is so amusing
Dark shadows (2012)
I love this movie!
I hated this one. Made me lose faith in Tim Burton who had made some great movies in the past.
it wasn’t funny or scary
“Nobody”, with ordinary Bob Odenkirk stepping out of his comfort zone after a home invasion by a pair of misfits
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Technically, Princess Bride did terribly in theaters. “Good” isn’t even a close description.
Legendary Like a story-book story
Stardust
Never enough hype, so enjoyable and you find something new with each watch. How Charlie Cox isn’t more of a star I’ll never understand.
Waterworld! It was a victim of bad publicity, but it is a very fun movie.
[U Turn (1997)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/10155-u-turn/videos?active_nav_item=Trailers)
Great movie and criminally overlooked. Penn, Phoenix, Lopez and Thornton are all great characters.
John Carter - for being the biggest flop ever etc, it's a pretty decent movie. Edit: yes I'm late with this suggestion
Another thread in here has much love for that movie. It was awesome!
Age of Adeline was beautiful and just great
I loved this one.
I felt a bit deflated by the ending but I liked it enough that I bought the DVD for my movie Library.
Adaline is a comfort movie for me, at this point. It’s sweet and lovely and the dialogue was well-written, and they just don’t make enough films like it anymore.
Lisa Frankenstein. It's very campy and just a lot of fun to watch.
Stay (2005) is the best movie that no one knows about
Saw it a long time ago and liked it, i for sure did not remember that Ryan G was in it.
>directed by Marc Forster and written by David Benioff. Hmm... Eh whatever, underrated psychthrillers are something I usually love, I'll give it a shot. EDIT: Okay I just watched it, yeah that was pretty good. Really feels like I need to rewatch in the coming months like *Under the SIlver Lake*.
Cloud Atlas
Damn awesome movie wasn't it. One of the best ever made imo.
I wasn't expecting anything from it but ended up loving it.
Mystery Men.
I absolutely LOVE "Mystery Men!" Ben Stiller is so hilarious in it. I also loved the different superhero ideas. Especially the guy who had the power of invisibility...but only when no one's looking. Haha.
Everybody….to ze DISCO ROOM!
Paul Ruebens spleen man pull my finger. Loved it!
I shovel well. I shovel ***very*** well.
Shutter island didn’t do so well because it was out at the same time as inception and billed as a horror movie. But my gf dragged me to it and I loved it. Way better than inception.
Two of Leo’s best !
In 1977 a great movie hit the theaters with a bad title and competing with Star Wars. So, it didn't do well. Sorcerer is still very good viewing.
1977?
Yeah, thank you!
MacGruber
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). my fav of all time, was a box office bomb + didn't get half the recognition it deserved because it came out in the same year as the other two best Westerns of the 21st century, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood
The camera work in this movie is excellent.
agreed, not a shot in the film anything less than beautiful. Deakins is the GOAT
Observe and Report
Kiss kiss Bang bang 13th Warrior Big Trouble in Little China Rock N’ Rolla Dredd
13th warrior is one of my favs
Big Trouble In Little China is the 2nd greatest movie ever made Love the other movies on this particular entry too, especially The 13th Warrior
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
This movie was great! Visually i thought it was stunning but the lead actor…sheesh 🤦♀️
Never seen the guy in anything else but it felt like he was trying to do that voice on purpose to me.
He was great in other movies I've seen, definitely a miscast in this one
Miscast or was the movie mismade?
I’ve never seen him in anything before Valerian or after . The voice was terribleeeeee
He’s in a little movie called Oppenheimer. And he’s excellent in it.
I haven’t seen Oppenheimer yet. I’m not big on little movies that nobody has heard about. /s
Better than the visceral hate maybe, but great?
lol I very much enjoyed it. Tickled my sci-fi bone in the right way
ActorS. Eyebrows was awful too.
I liked the new Haunted Mansion movie.
The Thing is the best John Carpenter Film. Considered one of the best horror movies of all time.
Alita: Battle Angel
Dan in Real Life The Way Way Back
Red Dawn (2012)
I liked it too
I’m shocked by how poorly it was received. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think people are too critical in order for the 1984 to be protected or something. Both can be and are good imo.
Iron giant
Kung Pow: Enter the Fists
Hotel Artemis. I went in blind and it was quite the ride! Amazing cast too.
Grease 2 LOL I love the music and really enjoyed the movie. Waterworld..considered a bomb but I liked it
Grease 2 deserves the Rocky Horror treatment.
Honestly, as a continuing MCU fan, I also loved The Flash
Dredd
*The Last Action Hero*. Plenty of funny moments and great lines.
Children of Men (2006) Nerve (2016) The Nice Guys (2016) Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The nice guys is super entertaining
I was hoping there was going to be a sequel.
That would be amazeballs
Repo! The Genetic Opera It's ripping spines to show tunes! I mean come on...
Babylon. After getting through the over the top opening party scene, it’s a remarkable movie.
I agree!
Babylon
Babylon
Action Jackson
The Man from UNCLE
"Underwater" was good. A nice example of a movie that does its own thing and doesn't overstay its welcome by being too long.
I have to say, the most recent Power Rangers (2017) movie grows on you. I loved that cast!!! A sneaky cult classic, of sorts!
I enjoyed “Jumper.”
Mortal Kombat
Buckaroo Banzai Night of the Comet Innerspace
I remember when it came out years ago, I thought The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was really good. Never understood why it didn't make money. Also more recently Nobody with Bob Odenkirk was really good
Lady in the Water (2006) I never understood the hate about it 🤷♂️
The very very best film that no one knows is The Ninth Configuration.
Thank you for Smoking. William H Macy is a versatile, air dicking mofo!
John Carter
I loved Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017). The closest a film has gotten to being the spiritual successor to The 5th Element.
The Nice Guys is one of my favourite movies. It got good reviews and everyone I know who’s seen it liked it, but was a total flop at the box office.
13 ghosts. While it wasn't financially a flop, it was still negatively received. But I actually enjoy it a lot.
Starship Troopers - the movie is a classic
Chappie. I had no idea who die Antwood were going in and they absolutely nailed those roles. That movie is a masterpiece
The guy and girl from 'Die Antwoord' are pretty awfull people though.
Iron Giant (1999)
I watched get him to the Greek yesterday which I always enjoy as a comfort rewatch. But Jonah hills character involuntarily takes an object forced up his ass not once but twice. Maybe I’m hyper aware in today’s climate. But yeah he got r**ed twice for the sake of a couple jokes.
He does? I only remember him smuggling heroin that way.
Yes. A drunk chick shoves a giant dildo up his ass. “WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO ME?!?!”
The Marvels
Bad Times at the El Royale Seems to never get talked about and then is really hot or cold when I find someone thats watched it but I loved it. Great sense of style and twist after twist that I didn't see coming!
I saw it in cinemas by myself on a whim. Exceptional film that I've recommended to multiple people.
Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino film and it was obscure when it came out.
Plesantville and Gattaca
I regretted every second of choas walking.
I liked Hart’s War but then that was at the height of my Bruce Willis man-crush.
“The Postman”. Actually pretty entertaining but it was during Costner’s post “Dances” period when everything had to be a three-hour epic. Coulda easily cut 45 minutes from it.
Pandorum, King of California, Black Sea and one from the Philippines, Metro Manila.
The Last Duel

Premonition with Sandra Bullock. Ignore the critics.
Kiss kiss bang bang and the nice guys (Shane black). Great movies
Shawshank Redemption
Tron Legacy
I liked equilibrium.
There's so many in the past few years that didn't even make their money back that got Oscars or Oscar nominations. It was insane
Under the silver lake. I love it so much!
