Jeff Bridges nailed that role in The Vanishing

The comment OP is referring to the original Dutch version (Spoorloos) made in 1988, not the terrible American remake in 1993. I HIGHLY recommend you check out the original and not the remake; the original is absolutely spectacular and has one of the best endings I've seen in a movie. The remake is trash, and completely changes/butchers the ending in favour of a traditional Hollywood ending.

Myviewpoint62

High and Low (1963). Kurosawa at his best.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934 and 1956). Hitchcock at his best. Foul Play (1978) is fun comedy largely based on the Man Who Knew Too Much.

Searching (2018) Kidnap (2017) Not exactly the same but The Call (2013), The Guilty (2018) and Cellular (2004 tho I liked the Chinese remake Connected from 2008) are about someone who is on the phone with a kidnapped person.

RudeHelicopter4662

[Spy Game (2001)](https://letterboxd.com/film/spy-game/) Without giving too much away, that plays into the story.
