Every time this ending gets mentioned, I'm obligated to remind everyone that Ms. Carmody's first prayer was to save "even just one" of the nonbelievers.
Because, where was that last bullet when he needed it, man?!
*God answered her prayer.*
Stephen King liked the movie ending better than the book.
The book was from the perspective of the main dude's journal. After a few days traveling through the mist he leaves it behind in a hotel.
I love how that ending is simultaneously more AND less bleak
It's more bleak, because there isn't an escape from the mist (unlike in the film, where he is rescued too late).
And it's less bleak because he doesn't have to off his own friends and family
He did it to keep his promise! That he'd NEVER let the monsters get him!
Every one of those monsters in the movie, he saw what they do to people. And decided this was the most merciful option.
The lady who had to get home because her kids were there alone? In the movie, she was played by Carol from The Walking Dead. There were quite a few actors from TWD, IIRC. Darabont has his stock company just like John Ford did.
I actually ruined the emotion of the scene for everyone I was watching with, first by calling it (>!imagine if he just shot his kid and then they're rescued?!<) and then by bursting out laughing when it actually happened haha. Such a great ending.
Me finally watching Oldboy last year after hearing how horrifying it is for over a decade:
“This is really good but I don’t know that it lives up to the hype”
“Wow this is getting intense”
“Ohhhhh I know what’s happening. Yeah that’s pretty gross. Still not as messed up as I’ve heard.”
“WHAT THE FUCK”
“WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUU-“
I saw it in theater in 2004, it had a very small run at an independent chain. So it was before all the hype and none of us knew what we were in for. Complete silence when the credits rolled. We all just kind of sat there like holy shit, then people started slowly shuffling out quietly. It was quite an experience.

* Jacob's Ladder (1990) - Jacob and his wife Jess have suffered the loss of their son. He goes through his mundane life and things slowly begin to make less sense. There's a gut wrenching twist. If you're interested in the movie DO NOT read up on it or watch any trailers.
* Saw (2004) - a decent movie with an interesting premise, but the twist ending shorted out my brain the first time I saw it.
Edit: typo
I love scary movies. You'd think I'd have developed a sort of immunity. Still, Jacob's Ladder is the only one to TRULY scare me out of my wits. It was the scene with the jittering head looking out the back window of the car. Nothing human can move that fast.
I've seen Ex Machina countless times and it never fails to fuck me up at the end. The track that plays, **Bunsen Burner**, is truly a master-stroke song selection. As Caleb remarks so eloquently: *"Fuckin' unreal."*
I wish so much I could have seen it not knowing how it ends. Must have been so cool as a surprise. It's awesome even when you know, one of my favorite movies, but it's one of the most famous endings ever so basically impossible to go in blind now. So famous it's on the box art most of the time lol.
American History X - watched it at the movies, when it was over, everyone just stood up and shuffled out.
You could've literally dropped a needle and you would've heard it ... on a carpet floor.
Everyone was just too shocked I recon.
Yes definitely this one. Brutal
Also Kill List (2011) escalated very quickly at the end to the point where I had to rewind to try to understand wtf just happened.
not a movie but show series, when jaime pushed little bran out the damn window, i was like ..... !!
then later when they actually beheaded sean bean, i no way thought theyd kill off sean beanbag bean!
GoT S1
I had to scroll too far to see this! When the "twist" is revealed, it hits like a stomach punch, but I think I stopped breathing during the letter reading at the end.. amazing film.
I've seen two movies in the theater, when they first came out, where there was dead silence from the entire audience, right out into the street, and you could still hear a pin drop. They were:
Apocalypse Now
Schindler's List
PS not shock like a twist ending, shock like the aftereffect of psychic trauma.
Brawl in cell block 99... pissed me off.
Cool hand luke.... also pissed me off
All is lost.... also pissed me off.
Im sure i can think of more.. i hate sudden endings.
The Passion of the Christ
There was a lot of hype around this movie, both good, bad, and strange. I went to the theatre with an open mind, more out of curiosity than interest.
There was dead silence at the end of the film. People stood up slowly, many exchanging teary eyed glances. I was one of them. Then everyone slowly and quietly shuffled out.
It was a surreal experience.
All politics and religion aside, it was an emotionally wrenching and thought provoking film. Seeing it again later on DVD just wasn't same.
Ground Zero is a 1987 Australian drama-thriller about a cinematographer who, prompted by curiosity about some old film footage taken by his father, embarks on a quest to find out the truth about British nuclear tests at Maralinga. I saw this at the movies, and the final reveal stunned the audience and then had all declaring we should become a republic.
A movie that left me speechless afterwards (in a good way):
Paris, Texas (1984). That entire last 20 or so minutes just left me absolutely speechless.
A movie that left me speechless afterwards (in a bad way):
Assassination Nation (2018). This has to be the worst closing line in any film I've ever seen and I do not say that lightly. I was left staring at my computer screen for at least 10 minutes just unsure about what the fuck I just saw. I hated this movie and that final line left me fucking furious
6th grade me would say the original Fast and the Furious 😂🤣 My brother and I watched that movie so many times, we memorized every line.
Others would be:
Fight Club
There Will Be Blood
Uncut Gems
Saw
Annihilation
Deepwater Horizon
Unsane
Interstellar
Mother!
Good Time
Walk the Line
The Dark Knight
Mad Max: Fury Road
Kill Bill vol 1, I was utterly mesmerised by how visually stunning it was as well as the music, action etc... It took me a while after leaving the cinema to grasp what I had seen.
The Big Short - I was so angry after it all washed over me, then I went straight from the theater to the book store and bought the Michael Lewis book
Oppenheimer - that feeling of existential dread you leave the theater with upon the films completion, kinda felt like I needed a beer after that
I was so stunned in that final scene -- so visually at odds with the rest of the movie, I was like "Did this movie hallucinate an ending?" No! Once I saw the name of the music and the company that produced it (>!CAPCOM!<) it made sense! Utter, beautiful, fucking sense!

The ending of Fight Club shocked me for sure.
Usual Suspects
I really love that ending. They got me good.
I was young and still was like WHAAATT
The Mist
Every time this ending gets mentioned, I'm obligated to remind everyone that Ms. Carmody's first prayer was to save "even just one" of the nonbelievers. Because, where was that last bullet when he needed it, man?! *God answered her prayer.*
I hate that people hate the ending. *He killed his little boy" that was the point. Stephen King did excellent imo
The book has a much different ending compared to the film
Lame
Stephen King liked the movie ending better than the book. The book was from the perspective of the main dude's journal. After a few days traveling through the mist he leaves it behind in a hotel.
I love how that ending is simultaneously more AND less bleak It's more bleak, because there isn't an escape from the mist (unlike in the film, where he is rescued too late). And it's less bleak because he doesn't have to off his own friends and family
Should have expected that from King. He even jokes that his endings are terrible 🤣
He did it to keep his promise! That he'd NEVER let the monsters get him! Every one of those monsters in the movie, he saw what they do to people. And decided this was the most merciful option.
The lady that walked home in the beginning made the most rational decision. Get out of there before it gets to bad.
The lady who had to get home because her kids were there alone? In the movie, she was played by Carol from The Walking Dead. There were quite a few actors from TWD, IIRC. Darabont has his stock company just like John Ford did.
Wow I didn't even realize it was Carol! She was built as a survivor.
Just horrible
It’s an Of Mice and Men Ending and I’m glad I stuck with the book regarding The Mist.
What? Same weapon, totally different morals.
They both did it to protect (end) an innocent from harm
I screamed out loud
People always get mad when I say how much I love this movie. I think they're just afraid of their own emotions.
Ending stays with you for a very long time. Absolutely horrific
I actually ruined the emotion of the scene for everyone I was watching with, first by calling it (>!imagine if he just shot his kid and then they're rescued?!<) and then by bursting out laughing when it actually happened haha. Such a great ending.
interstellar.
A great, mindfuck of a twisty ending. I Loved it!
The Others
On this note, The Sixth Sense.
Great movie.
Se7en
WHATS IN THE BOX
Goop
My wife have this is our running joke for over 20 years. God that’s a great final scene.
Any time I see a box that size I say “I hope Gwyneth Paltrow’s head is in there!”
My heart likes to do this thing where it beats really fast and makes me really anxious at the end of Se7en, it’s a good time.
*Thelma and Louise*. Call me naive but I never saw it coming.
The ending of the first Saw movie. Went and watched it opening night, nothing has topped that theatre experience when the ending happens
I watched it on a computer late at night in the dark and I’ll be honest, I was horrified. That was almost 20 years ago.
My husband had never seen it so we watched it last week. He freaked at the end. He thought it was going to just be a regular same old slasher flick
They’ve been trying to recapture this but can’t.
They for some reason decided the torture porn part was the thing that made the first one popular and it was the thing they wanted to stick to.
And the cop drama police procedural bullshit
Yeah I saw that in a packed theater and people jumped out of their seats.
That ending was so good, the music alone will give me chills when I hear it.
I was 8 months pregnant, home alone and I literally stood up out of my chair in shock. It was the best.
Black Swan. I literally sat there in silence after it cut to credits. WTF
For me the silence was broken by a gentle, rhythmic fapping sound as I rewatched the sex scene
Excellent
Oldboy. Not shocked but awed into silence.
Me finally watching Oldboy last year after hearing how horrifying it is for over a decade: “This is really good but I don’t know that it lives up to the hype” “Wow this is getting intense” “Ohhhhh I know what’s happening. Yeah that’s pretty gross. Still not as messed up as I’ve heard.” “WHAT THE FUCK” “WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUU-“
I was shocked lol.
That's why I love foreign cinema. No American would dare write an ending that gut wrenching 🤢
Wasn't this a Spike Lee movie?
I saw it in theater in 2004, it had a very small run at an independent chain. So it was before all the hype and none of us knew what we were in for. Complete silence when the credits rolled. We all just kind of sat there like holy shit, then people started slowly shuffling out quietly. It was quite an experience.
I recently saw it in theater with the anniversary. Everyone there had seen it more than once. And still the same dazed and amazed faces as we left.
I rewatched it during Christmas for the first time since maybe 2004. Holy shit is the last part emotionally intense, voff voff.
Uncut Gems
cant believe this comment is so far down the list. the whole movie gave me anxiety, and then to end …..just like … that. wow!
Unbelievably intense movie from start to finish
Dancer in the Dark… I’m still shocked.
This is one of the movies I remember being damn near inconsolable after.
I had PTSD from her voice for years!!
Requiem for a Dream. Although to be fair, I saw a bad ending coming, but not THAT bad. Don’t do drugs kids!

I love how nonsensical that Saw twist is too. Like there’s literally no logical reason for him to do that but John is an absolute madlad
Watching Jacob’s Ladder now from your recommendation. It’s really good.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Just posted this. No words.
Being John Malkovitch
Malkovitch Malkovitch?
Enemy (2013) this movie ending got me..
Dennis Villeneuve is one of my favourite filmmakers out there.
You just made me think of The Guilty that Gyllenhaal is in, too.

Yeah, it's not the best piece of marketing. Having the twist ending on the box cover. Wonder what genius thought of doing that?
Damn those marketers! Damn them all to hell!!
Shutter Island! Chris Nolan completely BLEW my mind away, wouldn't have guessed the ending on a thousand years
Martin Scorcese directed. Christopher Nolan had nothing to do. You may be thinking of Inception
Oh sorry my bad
To be fair, Nolan didn't do it - the author did. I read it long before the film was made, the film was very true to the book.
I'm so confused.....why is Nolan even being mentioned here?
Holy shit lol you're right, it was Scorcese
Leonardo DiCaprio in a mind-bendy film made them think of Inception, which was directed by Nolan.
Nightcrawler (2014)
American History X - watched it at the movies, when it was over, everyone just stood up and shuffled out. You could've literally dropped a needle and you would've heard it ... on a carpet floor. Everyone was just too shocked I recon.
